Yankees Reinstate Gleyber Torres

By TC Zencka | September 5, 2020 at 12:04pm CDT

The New York Yankees have reinstated star shortstop Gleyber Torres from the injured list, per a team release.

Torres hit the injured list on August 24th with a left hamstring strain. The move was retroactive to August 21st. It had been a slow start on the year for Torres, who was hitting just .231/.341/.295 when he went on the injured list. The 23-year-old Torres was an All-Star his first two seasons in the league while posting a combined triple slash of .275/.338/.511 with 62 home runs in 267 games.

Tyler Wade has stepped in at shortstop while Torres has been out. The 25-year-old hasn’t done much at the plate, slashing .170/.250/.264 across 60 plate appearances. Wade is a fine utility piece for New York, but he has nowhere near the upside of Torres, who will look to regain his power stroke upon returning to the field.

In a corresponding roster move, right-hander Albert Abreu was optioned to the team’s alternate training site. The 24-year-old Abreu made two appearances, surrendering 3 earned runs across 1 1/3 innings. Abreu is the Yankees’ 13th-ranked prospect per Baseball America.

Can Torres pitch? I don’t think he can be worse than what Britton and Chapman are doing.

As bad the pen has been. The offense makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

True but at least the offense has the excuse of a lot of injuries. Britton and Chapman are supposed to be the back end of a dominant bullpen.

so its ok if the offense to be on the IL and be bad … but if a bullpen pitcher comes off the IL they better have cy young production out the gate?

Especially considering Chapman is coming off covid positive test which is known to weaken the body?

I’m sure it’ll be okay as I’m pretty sure Charlie Montoyo is on the Yankees payroll at this point

I’ll take the historically great, sinker machine, record setting, Cy Young vote garnering Zach Britton over many relievers in MLB. He’s still intimidating. Miss him in the Orange & Black.

Chapman throws too hard. The faster you throw, the farther it goes.

Why did they let Schmidt pitch in that situation ?

That was some introduction to the big leagues. I can picture Boone saying “I know you’re a starter who’s not used to relieving and never pitched in the majors but go get some.”

Huge mistake by Cashman not to bring back DiDi. Could have had him cheap. Gleyber is well below average defensively as a SS. His future is not at SS. DiDi is an elite defensive SS and is a solid bat as well. Plus, he’s a leader in the clubhouse. Yanks are far worse off defensively without DiDi.

@Top Jimmy- I like Didi a lot but let’s stop overrating him. He is a better shortstop defensively then Torres. But you can’t compare Gregorius and Gleyber offensively. There is really no comparison. My guess is Didi will stay in Philadelphia with Girardi as a free agent.

A Prom Queen returns!!! Torres is an above average second baseman and a below average shortstop.

Who’s the next Prom Queen to go down? Before the week is out someone else will join Urshela on the IR.
