Corbin Burnes Exits Start With Lower Back Issue

By Connor Byrne | September 24, 2020 at 9:55pm CDT

Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes left his start Thursday with lower back discomfort, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com was among those to report. Burnes, making his final start of the regular season, lasted just 3 2/3 innings and yielded three earned runs on six hits against the division-rival Cardinals.

Thursday’s performance was among the worst outings of 2020 for Burnes, who has unexpectedly turned into one of the game’s premier hurlers this season. Including Thursday’s rough showing, the 25-year-old gave the Brewers 59 2/3 frames of 2.11 ERA/2.03 FIP pitching with 13.27 K/9, 3.62 BB/9 and a 46.4 percent groundball rate during a breakthrough regular season. It’s a far cry from the dreadful 8.82 ERA Burnes posted across 49 innings in 2019, when he yielded home runs on 38.2 percent of fly balls.

At 27-28, the Brewers are fighting for their playoff lives in a crucial five-game set in St. Louis. If the Brewers do make the postseason, they’ll obviously want Burnes to factor into their rotation, which he and Brandon Woodruff have led. However, it’s unclear whether Burnes will be healthy enough to return by then.

Well, we wouldn’t want anyone to ever be “uncomfortable”.

Weird that you put quotes around that word when the article never actually had it written.

In the short term it sucks. But if Peralta, Houser, and Lauer can do this off-season what Burnes did last year then we will be sitting nicely for years to come. Then you a couple young arms coming on quite nicely. A few starters and a few bullpen arms. Yes I know none of these guys rank on all the stupid rankings. There are more busts on these prospect lists. My point is we need to make an impact on a couple of bats probably a third baseman , first and one outfielder.

Any team on the planet can say that. “If the rest of our rotation can overperform next year like that one guy did this year, then we’ll be set”. And if my team’s entire offense turned into nine Mike Trouts, we’d probably be set too.

Looking toward 2021, the Brewers have a ton of “ifs.” More than most teams. They’ll be reaching for band-aids in a free-agent class that is horrible.

They reached for bandaids last year too. What’s your point?

These guys are going to be good and Burnes didn’t over perform he did exactly who he is.

Burnes for sure overperformed. He’s not a 2 or even a sub 3 era guy. Maybe it’s just the baseball gods evening things out for his horrible season last season.

The Brewers need to figure out their lineup. I think they have a lot of potential overall with their pitching staff, but their lineup is horrible. Sure, they hit on Gyroko, but when you sign a lot of guys like him (Holt, Sogard, Smoak, Narvaez, Garcia, Peterson, Morrison, Healy), chances are good that one scrap heap piece will actually have a good season.

They’ve got two good starters in Burnes and Woodruff. They’ll have a three headed monster bullpen with Hader, Williams, and Knebel. Throw in Suter, Peralta and maybe Yardley and the Brewers have a solid foundation for a pitching staff.

Brewers have only went backward the last two seasons. Should prepare for another step back.

He absolutely did overperform. There’s zero chance Corbin Burnes is a sub-2.00 ERA guy. He had a very good first season, an abysmal second season, you can’t sit here and say a 1.77 ERA (up until yesterday’s start) is going to be his norm.

Houser has a 4.15 career ERA, Lauer has a 4.68 ERA, and Peralta has a 4.58 career ERA, but sure, I’m sure they’re all just magically going to throw sub-2.00 ERAs like Burnes did at the same time.

I wonder how many times I would read “playoff lives” if I went back and read the last 20 articles. I chose two to read and it was in each.

Well this really sucks! In watching the game last night, it was kind of obvious that he wasn’t quite himself….hopefully this is a minor issue that will pass quickly
