Matt Chapman To Undergo Season-Ending Hip Surgery

By TC Zencka | September 12, 2020 at 5:41pm CDT

5:41PM: Chapman has suffered a torn hip labrum, agent Scott Boras tells Susan Slusser.  Boras estimates Chapman will need 12-16 weeks of recovery time.

1:09PM: The Oakland A’s have placed Matt Chapman on the 10-day injured list, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). Chapman has been seeking a second opinion on his right hip tendinitis, per Slusser. Chapman will now undergo surgery on the hip on Monday, which will sideline the star third baseman for the rest of the season, tweets Martín Gallegos of MLB.com.

The news obviously comes as a blow to the division-leading Athletics. Chapman’s defense at the hot corner is a rare commodity of itself – he’s a two-time Platinum Glove winner – but paired with the thump of a .503 career slugging percentage and that’s a special player. More specifically, that’s an MVP candidate: Chapman finished in the top-7 for MVP voting in each of his two full seasons.

This year, Chapman’s triple slash of .232/.276/.535 is down a little from his career standards, primarily in the on-base department. A 10.3 BB% for his career has dwindled to 5.3 BB% this season, paired some additional swing-and-miss as well (35.5 K%). In 37 games, he’s produced 1.1 rWAR, which extrapolated would be a 4.8 rWAR year over 162 games.

Taking a glass-half-full approach, Chapman should be able to return to form after the surgery, which will be performed on Monday by Dr. Marc Philippon, per Slusser. Teammate Mark Canha can give Chapman the rundown of expectations, as Canha underwent the same surgery, Slusser notes. Chad Pinder and Vimael Machín figure to get the majority of playing time at the hot corner the rest of the way.

Seth Brown has been recalled to take his roster spot, the team announced. Brown put up a surprising 26-game stint in 2019 in which he slashed .293/.361/.453 across 83 plate appearances. He’s without a hit in 4 at-bats so far this season.

Currently there are 231 players on the injured list for a variety of reasons based on sportsrac numbers.. 2018 you had 699 total based on roster resource and that was 6 months worth of games. Havent even played 2 months worth of games and we are already around a 2 month average worth of injuries based on 2018 numbers.

Over a 100 are currently on the 60 day DL. That also includes players who opted for TJS before the season began.

Even then, the number of players getting TJS before the season began was high.

2019 you had over 100 players hit the 60 day according to roster resource….again, that is over the course of 6 months.

Factor in also that there are expanded rosters this season. Some (probably un-knowable unless you spend a ton of time researching) percentage of these players would’ve been on the Minor League IL as opposed to the MLB IL. That’s gotta play a little bit of a role too.

Are we claiming that injuries don’t normally happen in regular seasons? I think the 2019 Yankees would take issue with that.

Could also simply be a bad year. Would love info comparing to the last ten years (average) and then next couple of years too. A snapshot stat could be limited in value.

From Slusser today on Twitter: Since 2017, when Chapman first came up, he’s led the majors in defensive runs saved, with 82. Six more than Andrelton Simmons, and 32 more than the next 3B on the list, Chapman’s former HS teammate Nolan Arenado. Simmons did that in 428 games. Arenado did that in 512 games. Chappie did that in 422 games.

        • looiebelongsinthehall

As a Sox observer, with the total package, I’d be happy with either but would swing towards Chapman simply because he does his offense in Oakland. With the glove, one might be the second Brooks Robinson and the other the next Aurelio Rodriguez or Nettles, neither a noticeable consistent difference. Also, the contract status.

        • looiebelongsinthehall

I use my eyes more than stats that to me are overblown. I’d take Chappie to but not because of a DRS stat.

        • ChocoRolles

          Looie

The whole Coors field thing is overrated. Arenado has some of the best numbers at Oracle park and its one of the most pitcher friendly parks in baseball. The guy can hit homeruns in any park. Look at both defense and offense and it’s clear Arenado is the better player. Chapman is great though.

        • smuzqwpdmx

Arenado has a respectable .793 OPS on the road, and an inflated .992 OPS at Coors. Finding an arbitrary small sample size where he did better on the road at one park doesn’t change the facts. Chapman has been the better hitter over his career if you account for ballpark effects in any reasonable way.

        • ChocoRolles

His stats say other wise. Chapman is a .250 lifetime hitter. Arenado has better SLG, OBP, OPS, HRs and a better OPS+ in the past three years not including 2020. Don’t forget Arenado has more RBI, BB, and a lot less SO.

        • JesusLizard44

Arenado is .324 career at home avg vs .264 away. Chapman is .262 home vs .247 away and had better 2020 stats than Arenado in everything but batting avg. Saying Coors stats aren’t inflated is like saying PCL numbers are accurate.

        • ChocoRolles

So Arenado is hitting Away better than Chapman in places like Dodger stadium, Oracle Park, and Petco Park which are some of the biggest parks in baseball? So you’re saying Chapman is better this year but not other years?

        • JesusLizard44

I’m saying Arenado is worse this year in everything but his inflated home avg while Chapman was improving and has 40% higher DRS in 90 less games.

        • ChocoRolles

so having a better year makes Chapman a better player. Interesting take. All the All Stars that are struggling this year or not playing to their level must suck then with your logic. Just face it, he’s having a better year so far, but he is not the better player. Can’t wait until Arenado idiots out and goes to another team so that he can shut you “he plays in Coors” naysayers. I am going to enjoy hearing your excuses when he continues to dominate. Not a Rockies fan by the way.

        • JesusLizard44

I never said he was a better player overall, Arenado still has better batting stats but there’s a significant difference in his splits and his away numbers are much closer to Chapman. Obviously I’m an A’s fan but would still pick Chapman as the best fielding 3B which was the comment I originally responded to. Nothing against Arenado I enjoy their HS backstory and watching them play against each other.

        • ChocoRolles

To each their own, the amount of plays and the level difficulty I’ve seen from Arenado makes him hands down the best def 3B. Chapman is really good though. Come 2022 Arenado will be playing for a different team and we will see he splits. I’m sure when he makes the Hall of Fame they will list his home/away splits and not his offensive prowess and awards.

        • looiebelongsinthehall

You have to also consider contracts. Would Arenado get the same deal that is left on his contract today? What would he command? Since signing he’s been a bit of a headache. Chapman to me is the better value going forward as I don’t think he’ll get pre-Covid value as my guess is it will take most teams including CO and Oakland several years to regroup financially.

        • ChocoRolles

Superstars get their contracts, Arenado will not be playing for the Rockies. No need to worry about money, he’s going to be traded to a team that will be contending and will offer him a huge contract if he decides to opt out. You seem to think that all teams are small market like As and Rockies. As being the cheaper from the two.

Did I read somewhere that Chapman and Arrenado played HS and/or club ball together? If so, I wonder which one played 3B and which one played SS?

      Reply
      • ChocoRolles

They were both teammates in high school but neither of them played 3B. Both played SS, Arenado being the starter and Chapman being the backup. When Arenado pitched, Chapman would start at SS.
