Twins Designate Homer Bailey

By Connor Byrne | September 25, 2020 at 2:21pm CDT

The Twins announced that they have designated right-hander Homer Bailey for assignment and selected fellow righty Edwar Colina.

This is a surprising outcome for Bailey, a former Red who revived his career between Kansas City and Oakland last year. The Twins, fresh off an AL Central title, then signed Bailey to a one-year, $7MM guarantee last offseason. Minnesota only got two starts and eight innings from Bailey this year, though.

Bailey, 34, landed on the injured list with biceps tendinitis after his first start of the season July 28, and he returned from nearly a two-month absence on Tuesday. Bailey threw three innings of one-run ball in that game – a win over the Tigers – but it wasn’t enough to save his job with the playoff-bound Twins, who count Kenta Maeda, Jose Berrios, Rich Hill and Michael Pineda as their top four starters.

Colina, meanwhile, is a hard-throwing 23-year-old who ranks among the Twins’ 20 best prospects at MLB.com (No. 16) and FanGraphs (No. 16). MLB.com writes that while Colina has a chance to turn into a major league starter, “an impact reliever” role may also be in his future. Colina divided last year among High-A, Double-A and Triple-A, where he combined for a 2.96 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 over 97 1/3 innings.

He was good or the A’s last half of 2019. Eight innings for $7M is a poor return on investment. Good guy. I hope he catches on somewhere.

Well, $2.3MM for eight innings is a poor return on investment also.

Just curious, mlbtraderumors.com says that 7 MM contract from the Twins was a guaranteed one. I’m not sure I understand how they only paid him 1/3 of that amount. Am I missing something?

    Man.

Like Megden (sp?) with Oakland the Twins seem to have pitching depth to spare.
I think the single biggest factor in this year’s playoffs is going to be depth. Particularly pitching.

Most teams are scrambling to *add* pitching.

They realize they need as many starters as they can get for playoffs? CS and World Series have no travel days

Bailey is 34. He’s averaged 100 IP a season.. and all as a starter. Time catches up with even the most talented and accomplished, and he was never an FOR pitcher.

Is he the richest player ever to never make an All-Star team?

I would imagine he is the richest player to never make an all star game. He’s banked 119 million bucks in his career. Rusney Castillo banked 72.5. I cant think of anyone else who never made an AS game with that significant of a contract.

I looked it up, he is. Only close calls were Nick Markakis and Shin-Soo Choo who both made one All-Star team.

5.5 WAR versus mid 30’s for those guys.

Kakis and Choo probably deserved another all star nod or two now that you mention them.

Wow, really? The gap is way bigger than I thought. It’s crazy how sneaky good they’ve both been for so long while someone like Bailey seemingly got paid more on his pedigree than any consistent major league production.

Honorable mention to Chris Davis, Orioles. 1 ASG, 2013. Career 11.0 bWAR. Excluding 2013, career 3.9 bWAR. Career earnings $142M through 2022, less 2020 pro-rata.

Only caveat I’d have is that Davis has posted -6 WAR the last 3 years. Would’ve been released on almost all other teams.

He could still get picked up and make a start for someone on Sunday. A team like the Giants or Brewers could snatch him up if their bullpen is fried come Sunday and they need someone to throw a few good innings.

Wondering if this is a clubhouse issue here like he had in Cincy-

Id have to imagine he would be worth hanging onto for future potential 5 and 7 game series later
