New Angels GM Perry Minasian is bringing three of his former co-workers to his new team. Per the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (via Twitter), the Angels will hire Alex Tamin as an assistant GM, Dominic Chiti as a special assistant, and Rick Williams as a scout. All three were formerly employed by the Braves.
Tamin, Rosenthal notes, was also an assistant GM with the Braves, but his move to the Angels still qualifies as a promotion. Minasian, for example, ranked above Tamin with the Braves, despite the pair both holding the title of assistant GM. Minasian was the senior vice president of baseball operations and assistant GM, while Tamin held the sole title of assistant GM for major league operations. Tamin had previously been employed by the Dodgers as their director of baseball operations before moving to the Braves in December of 2017.He has a solid reputation for his work with analytics in player evaluation.
Chiti, meanwhile, was reassigned from his role as director of player development at the end of the 2019 season, the Athletic’s David O’Brien tweeted at the time. Last season, he served as a scouting special assistant, presumably a role similar to the one he’ll take on with the Angels.
Rick Williams was the Rays pitching coach from 1998 to 2000, at which point he joined the front office as a special assistant to the GM. He spent seven years as a scout for the Yankees and joined the Braves in 2014 as a special assistant for pitching development. Williams, Chiti, and Tamin represent the first three hires of Minasian as the new GM of the Angels.

Im liking the adds to the front office, this is the offseason that Moreno needs to add the big dog to the rotation, no more fillers. Go get Bauer & Tanaka or Odorizzi. If they want to have a reclamation project , go for chris archer. He could be fixed under Mickey Callaway. Add Brad Hand , Alex Colome & Yates to the bullpen.Move Fletcher over to SS , bring back La Stella.
GeoKaplan
LaStella is bench depth, not an everyday 2B. He was cost-effective before FA, will not be so after.
AngelsAdvocate
Tommy LaStella is an everyday player.
Halo11Fan
He’s an everyday player as long as he only hits against RH pitching, take away his glove and pinch run for him every time he gets on base.
La Stella is as one dimensional as one dimensional gets.
i like al conin
Way too expensive for the amount of available budget.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
I feel bad for Mike Trout outside of Rendon there are no longer any legit hitters. Pujols is HOF but he’s been a average hitter for awhile. Upton has evidently forgot how to hit. Plus the Angels really have no pitching.
Vizionaire
what are the legit hitters? are they opposite of illegitimate person like you?
The Natural
What an unnecessary, unintelligent remark.
Halo11Fan
Cubfever.
it was an imbecilic comment. There are only two legitimate hitters on the Angels?
If that’s what someone thinks, then that’s the unintelligent remark.
AngelDiceClay
Fred McGriff-You’re wrong once again. Upton got off to a bad start but later was mashing the ball. Fletcher is good hitter.. A great leadoff hitter. He always manages to put the ball in play and rarely strikes out. The Angels may have found their 1B of the future in Jared Walsh.. Ward played well and hit fairly well in RF in place of Adell. We will see how that translates into 2021.
So don’t feel bad for Rendon and Trout. Feel bad for your lack of knowledge about the Angels lineup.
angelsfan4life
FredMcGriff is obviously a troll. Fletcher is the best player most fans don’t know about.
AngelsAdvocate
Upton sucks.
LaFlamaBlanca
Pretty obvious you do not watch the Angels play. If you did you would know guys like Fletcher, Walsh, Ohtani, Bundy, Canning, Mayers, etc. But go on about your blind take for a team you don’t watch play.
AngelsAdvocate
They’re unwatchable.
ryanw-2
The Angels have a lot of OBP and power coming from their offense. Top of 5 almost across the board in 2020 and almost all of them will be back in 2021. Just one more decent arm in their rotation, erasing the ERA abyss in the spot occupied by Julio Teheran and Shohei Ohtani would’ve easily gotten them to the playoffs in 2020.
AngelsAdvocate
F Trout.
He’s just a CF.
Ernest Romero
Need 30 home runs and a right fielder wake up and sign Peterson from the Dodgers
Philliesfan4life
Give him a 3 year deal? Trade Marsh or Adell for pitching
cookmeister 2
Lol this is so bad, I can’t tell if you’re joking or not
GeoKaplan
Pretty sure it’s a parody account.
AngelDiceClay
Uh I’m not trading 2 young future OF’s to give Peterson a 3 year deal. Lay off the sauce or go into rehab.
Koamalu
A platoon player? Why? Adell is the RF.
LaFlamaBlanca
Lmao the nixed Pederson/Stripling trade was a great decision on the Angels part. Angels aren’t touching Pederson with a 10 foot pole, they literally signed Scott Schebler for 900k. Some of the keyboard GMs on here have some of the most ridiculous proposals.
ryanw-2
No thanks. What started as a massive controversy regarding him and Stripling turned out to be a dodged bullet. At this point, for me it’s a test of which Angels fans actually follow their team.
AngelsAdvocate
Joc is a solid LF.
Robrock30
This sounds like a solid plan expeditiously being implemented. Braves organization knows how to develop from within and supplement with one year contracts a la Ozuna, and Donaldson. I like the cohesive unit with synergistic strengths here.
Vizionaire
that is what the angels desperately need. good move.
LaFlamaBlanca
Why does everyone just make blind assumptions. You have absolutely no idea who is responsible for the success of teams. Just because an organization hires an executive from a prior successful organization, does not mean immediate nor sure success. I mean the same was said about Billy Eppler (Yankees) and Mickey Calloway (Indians/Mets) prior to their hirings and they haven’t improved the Angels much at all since their hires. The new front office could easily run the organization further into the ground. The Angels narrative by non fans is soo tired at this point.
ryanw-2
If you’re going to call out so-called non fans, you should back it up. Eppler rebuilt the farm system and drafted better than any Angels GM since Bill Stoneman. He built a core that is only a few pieces from contention. The Angels pitching staff improved a great deal in several areas under Mickey Callaway, particularly their starting pitching. Unfortunately, one of Eppler’s weaknesses was his unwillingness to spend on the bullpen, and that pulled their staff through the ground. Plus, the organizational pipeline Eppler developed is very position player heavy. So there’s not enough coming out of their system on the pitching end anyway. However, Dylan Bundy did show MLB the pitcher the Orioles originally drafted, and one can credit Callaway for a part of that. I’d take any executive from the Braves organization as GM. They have emphasized developing starting pitching for a long time, something the Angels also did before this past decade. This new GM is probably one of the better options to take the Angels back to their focus on developing pitching, but now with Mike Trout and a powerful offense added to that.
ron cey
laflamblanca. dude. we are always hopeful! we just need pitching.yes there have been a lot of Cahill types for several years now bc our pitching injury rate is the highest in both leagues for 6-7 years now. ipr. just made up a new stat lol.if you remember we don’t want to trade trout. he’s the man who doesn’t love this guy. perhaps better than mantle and he doesn’t womanize nor is he a drunk. we need pump is to retire so we can have that money. love him but no more room
AngelsAdvocate
So good
DGHalos714
Good to see Perry getting to make his own moves it seems. I really hope that Arte lets him do his thing and just give thumbs up on moves or contacts. Honestly, as long as he really has pitching as his priority then I hope to see a big name (or two) and some supplemental pieces soon. It isn’t like a rebuild is needed and the Angels aren’t too far away from contending. Especially with our division leveling out. Should be a really important season….
ron cey
looks like we are wasting no time. get the heads together and get moving.
I hope they get an ace and a solid number 2. a catcher. a 2nd baseman. 3 relievers and a Partridge in a pear tree
i like al conin
I like the sentiment, especially the RPs. But the best they’ll do for SPs is sign 1-2 No. 3s. They don’t have the farm system or free agent money for better, unless they overpay for 1 yr of Lynn, which would be dumb. They have to find success with back-end RPs and develop SPs ASAP.
bkbk
What are you talking about. They have like 50m this offseason. Dont be a troll. The bigger problem is the market is dry after Bauer.
Halo11Fan
So during this era, the Angels are going to go from 180 million to 210 million? No wonder people hate Arte, they think he has endless pockets and not just deep pockets. I thought the Angels spending 30 million in this COVID era was optimistic, but you people take the cake.
Vizionaire
unfortunately, he has stopped spending money when a little more would have been godsend.
Robrock30
Maybe trade for Darvish as Cubs are open for business
i like al conin
Troll? Don’t you read? MLBTradeRumors 5 days ago: “…leaving Minasian with approximately $25MM to work with in his first offseason in Anaheim.” $50 mil? Troll.
Koamalu
Arte okayed us being in on Cole and offered him $300 million. Certainly not his fault Cole decided to go to the Yankees. He spent huge money on Rendon. He extended Trout. How can people honestly try to say that he won’t spend? Are they just not paying attention?
5toolMVP
@ al conin
What Mark Polishuk writes in an article for MLBTR 5 days ago is HIS best guesstimate of what the Angels (will/could/might)spend, not Arte’s self imposed hard cap what the team will actually spend.
The Angels had $24m come off the books from Simmons and Teheran ALONE, plus (3-5m) more from non-tender players. Spending that $24-28m just brings them back to previous payroll levels, who is to say they won’t spend $5-14m more than last year??
i like al conin
Of course it can go higher. But not to $50 mil like bkbk arrogantly suggested.
AngelDiceClay
$25M is the floor. Arte has always said they will spend big for the right player.
5toolMVP
Halo honk, I agree. I’ve always seen it that way too. I just hope they sign players with upside for 2021-23 and if that takes payroll up to or slightly above luxury tax for a year, so be it.
Halo11Fan
5tool. It is his estimate. If Moreno non tenders the obvious candidates and raises his payroll by ten million dollars (far from certainty in these times) he will have a little over 30 million to spend.
If he goes all-in, and goes up to the luxury tax threshold, he’ll have over 50 million.
I think 30 million is optimistic. I wouldn’t expect 50 million.
He’s going to be one of the few owners to have a higher payroll than last year, and you seem to thing he’s going to increase his payroll from last year by 30 million dollars? And I thought I was an optimist.
5toolMVP
I believe Darvish has a full NTC.
Robrock30
Partial NTC 21-23 now after 2020 limit to 12 teams. He knows Joe Maddon and pitched in AL West and with Dodgers and can mentor Ohtani. He earns $ 59MM next three years and was elite last year and prior years.
Deleted_User
$300m is a lot of money in an absolute sense but everyone knew Cole was going to get more. Arte okayed a $300m offer to give the illusion of being willing to spend money without actually doing it, kinda like what Reinsdorf did with Manny Machado.
And every owner in the game (yes, even the Rays, A’s and Pirates) would have signed Trout for that much $ if they had the chance. You aren’t getting that kind of production for less elsewhere.
ron cey
we WILL be in on the Bauer sweepstakes. we can get a decent middle infielder this time around reasonable price whether it be siemens or hernandez. we got fletch to move around for now if need be. lots of bp arms out there for trade or purchase. catcher I may be dreaming about but who knows. I do think some prospects may go for pitcher. we will see.
AngelsAdvocate
“An ace”
5toolMVP
An Ace SP, Bauer; a SS, Kim from KBO; and 2 relievers, May and Hand or ONE of those two and another mid/setup RP.
AngelDiceClay
Danny Partridge as our 2B?
AngelsAdvocate
“An ace”
Nuschler
Dom Chiti, is actually Harry Dominic Chiti III, son of former big league catcher Harry Chiti and was a 2nd round draft pick by the Braves in 1976.
Josh blankenship
Now they just needa hire Ron Washington as the coach and they really will be Braves west.
SoCalBrave
yet again, the Angels fleece the Braves
bkbk
LOL
HalosHeavenJJ
Seem like solid hires.
AngelsAdvocate
Angels’ fans are dumb AH.
BSpar
These are quality hires! On another note I think the halos and the buccos set up nicely tor a couple of trades that are not cost prohibitive for both teams. I’m thinking musgrove and Frazier for a couple of prospects, probably someone in the 5 to 10 range and a lottery ticket or 2. Both of the former come with 2 years of control and this year would cost approximately 7mil each.
Don’t know much about the halos farm system but id think something along Rodriguez Soriano and Hernandez would be an interesting starting point.
Thoughts?
BSpar
Actually I meant 7 million for both
Excel_1984
Been a fan of the Angels for over 30 years. They are on the outside looking in because of their front office. That’s old news lol
