Minor MLB Transactions: 11/18/20

By Connor Byrne | November 18, 2020 at 6:56pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around the majors…

  • The Cardinals have selected catcher Ivan Herrera, bringing their 40-man roster to 38 players, per a team announcement. Herrera, who turned 20 in June, ranks among the Cardinals’ top prospects. MLB.com places Herrera fourth overall in the Cardinals’ farm system, writing that he has 15-home run, on-base potential as a hitter and is someone who possesses “the athleticism, aptitude and work ethic to make the necessary gains” as a defender. The Cardinals could be counting on Herrera as their eventual answer behind the plate, considering Yadier Molina’s an aging free agent and Andrew Knizner hasn’t shown much in the majors so far.
  • The Red Sox have signed outfielder Michael Gettys to a minor league contract, Chris Smith of MassLive.com relays. Gettys was a second-round pick of the Padres in 2014, though he didn’t get past the Triple-A level with the franchise through 2019. The 25-year-old owns a minor league line of .260/.316/.429 with 84 home runs and 120 stolen bases (168 attempts) across 2,860 plate appearances.

Gettys is a nice sleeper prospect

I agree, in a stacked farm like the Padres its easy to get pushed aside or put too much pressure on yourself compared to those around you when you’re young. Or you suck and need a change of scenery to clear yourself. Worth a flier and the numbers aren’t horrible…

Gettys used to be a big time prospect for the Padres, I think like ~4 years ago he was a top 10 type guy in their system.

He’s super fast, cannon arm, decent pop. The problem is he has severe contact issues and when you strike out more than 33% of the time and basically never walk, it makes it really hard to be even an average hitter.

I’d love to see if he can swing it at the MLB level one of these days. It just seems like he’s missing the one tool that you have to have, the hit tool.

CNichols – so what you are saying is that he is Michael Chavis with a much better arm, better outfield defender, very fast, but like Chavis he strikes out too much and does not walk much (like Chavis).

He replaces Chavis in the outfield and Arroyo replaces him in the infield…. I see Chavis traded this off season as he is not a good defender at any position, and has way too much competition to make the mlb Red Sox (and i do not see him being sent back to AAA).

Getty’s has four tools. He struggles with contact. I wish he could make more steady contact. He would be a beast

In all fairness, Knizner has been given less than 100 plate appearances in the majors.

And not many games strung together starting to get into any kind of rhythm with those limited at bats. My first thought was haw could he show much in the Bigs with Molina on the roster? Molina never sits.

i mean that’s true, but i dont think the statement that he’s struggled in his opportunities is exactly wrong

It’s very hard to put together a good string of ABs when your getting like 2 a week, probably not even that. So, really he hasn’t been given a legitimate shot to show what he really is, which I think is a pretty talented player with potential.

I’m not saying that he hasn’t struggled, but it should be worth mentioning, adding in like “albiet in only 75 plate appearances” at the end of that paragraph would have been nice.

Knizner will be a fine catcher both defensively and offensively for some MLB team. Maybe the Cards should trade him like they did Voit and others.

Herrera seems to be the better prospect tho. Better all around game. Knizner probably loses his chance at anything more than the backup job if Molina returns. Herrera should be MLB ready within 2 years

Thats actually a really good point. The fact that he was eligible for minor league free agency also reminds me that aside from possibly Dinelson Lamet, who was signed that same year, he may have actually been the player who had been with the Padres organization the longest up until he left.

Gettys would have been one of the last pre-AJ Preller players they had in their system. I might be missing a couple random minor league guys, but I think that makes Lamet the last player remaining that was not acquired under Preller.

Kind of crazy that Gettys survived that long in a system with that much turnover before leaving.

There might be a few career minor leaguers floating around for depth but probably not many. That flush of talent replaced everything in there.
Getty’s should never be a mlb player but chances are teams like the Os and bosox will take a chance
But as far as the major league team myers is the longest

I remember Wade Boggs with the Red Sox at 3B and Scott Cooper in AAA, so the RS traded Jeff Bagwell to Houston as he had a BA of .333 in AA, but he only had 4 HRs, so he was blocked by two players the RS deemed better (Boggs was….Cooper was not). The Red Sox said he did not have enough power….. 449 home runs and a HOF career later, i guess a change of scenery flipped the switch for him.

Maybe Gettys will get an opportunity with the Red Sox and hopefully some coach there will help him to have a successful mlb career.

Yeah LV. Funny how sometimes the wrong kid is traded to clear space isn’t it? Coop wasn’t bad for a few years, but of course no the HOF guy Bags was and lets not for get they moved Carney Lansford in the 1st place just to make room for Boggs and got rooked in that deal.

Yes, Carney Lansford hit .336 in 1991 and won a batting title and .301 the next year, but Boggs was one of the best hitters that ever played winning 5 batting titles while with the Red Sox and a BA of .338, OPB of .438, OPS .890 with the Red Sox.

Contracts and money are now the biggest reasons players are acquired or traded. Many teams just do not have the money for certain players. Other times it is because teams do not want to take the risk of a players health going bad or the significant drop off in performance as they age

I was at the game when Lansford ripped his knee up sliding into home and he was replaced by Boggs, starting his HOF career.

Excellent memory. Sox refused to trade Cooper and convinced the Astros to take a flyer on Bagwell instead. Cooper was deemed as “untouchable ” at the time.

Larry Anderson was the take for Bagwell. The media never let the GM forget it.

Wow, if Lansford does not get hurt then does Boggs ever get a real opportunity to show how good he was……. fate is a funny thing…..

Gettys is not Boggs, but maybe he will make the most of wherever opportunity he gets in Boston which sounds like it will be more than he would have gotten in SD’s loaded farm system.
