Cubs, Matt Dermody Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | December 23, 2020 at 12:52pm CDT

The Cubs have agreed to a minor league contract with left-hander Matt Dermody, MLBTR has learned. The 30-year-old southpaw will be invited to Major League Spring Training to compete for a bullpen job.

Dermody opened the 2020 season pitching on the independent circuit but caught the Cubs’ attention with a strong showing, leading to a minor league deal in August. The Cubs called him up to the big league roster later in the summer, and he pitched one scoreless inning before being taken off the roster. That marked Dermody’s first MLB experience since a 22 1/3-inning stint with the Blue Jays in 2017, when he posted a 4.43 ERA with 15 strikeouts and five walks.

Dermody has a rather limited track record at the MLB level, having pitched just 26 1/3 innings overall, but he’s appeared in parts of four Triple-A seasons and pitched to a 4.12 ERA in 87 1/3 frames. Overall, in seven minor league seasons, the former 28th-rounder has a 3.68 ERA with 7.7 K/9 against 2.1 BB/9. At the moment, the Cubs’ only left-handed relievers on the 40-man roster are Kyle Ryan and Brad Wieck, so it’s not a surprise to see them adding some left-handed depth to bring to camp.

@xxtremecubsguy89- Gee, haven’t read something like this before. So original!

Some Cubs fans constantly pride themselves on being part of so many other “fans”. Newsflash, probably 70% of all sports fans are total morons. Glad you feel so accomplished as a fan of a team with so many other morons. Go back to bed in Mom’s basement clown!

Cubs NOT RELEVANT for next several years – except when they unload KB for a bag of “foul” balls.

      Not worth talking about.

      GO SOX!

Do you mean Kyle Ryan and Brad Wieck are the only LEFTY relievers on the roster? I find it hard to believe that the Cubs only have two relievers total on the roster right now.

I like the signing. Buy low candidate with some upside. He pitched well enough before TJ when he was with Toronto and he was 95 in his one outing against the Cards this year (1-2-3 inning). As a Cubs follower, we need LHPs in a bad way.

The term “dumpster dive” just doesn’t sit well with me when discussing baseball. This sport is so difficult, to call anyone who’s made it this far and swam through the other ~180 in the minors each year trash pick up…nah

Look up the comments when the Padres claimed Kirby Yates.

Not much certain in baseball futures.

I sincerely wish I had the time to mediate these fine folks web sites. They do a great job with all four of the major sports, blessings to you all. I would not allow the folks who come here for news, insights and rumblings to have to endure the trolls, the bad mouthers, the inconsiderate people who come here to talk trash. I am sorry for the few who give the rest grief.

Well said blues——-I would really like to subscribe to MLBTR for all the extras—however, I can’t do it when I have to sift through comments to find something I can stomach. If they come up with a block option I will walk my money to the window.

This is one of the few sites that still allows comments and it’s no coincidence that all the others have turned them off due to the constant trolling.

This pretty much mirrors society where a select few are ruining it for the rest of us.

I don’t wish to ban anybody from a site—-I just would like the ability to block them if I choose.
