Jason Varitek Tests Positive For COVID-19

By TC Zencka | December 19, 2020 at 10:03pm CDT

Jason Varitek’s wife revealed on Twitter today that the former catcher tested positive for COVID-19, writes Christopher Smith of Masslive.com.

Varitek is preparing for his first season as a full-time coach on Alex Cora’s robust coaching staff in Boston. Varitek will be the Game Planning Coordinator, presumably drawing on experience from his playing days as a game-managing backstop for the Red Sox. The role figures to be an extension of his previous responsibilities as a special assistant and catching coach, a position he’s held since 2012. He’s been a member of the Boston organization since July 31, 1997 when he arrived with Derek Lowe as part of a deadline deal with the Mariners.

Varitek, of course, is a legend in Boston for his role on the 2004 and 2007 World Series winners. He served as a regular catcher with the Red Sox from 1998 until 2011, finishing his playing career with a .256/.341/.435 line across 1,546 games amassing 5,839 plate appearances. He made three All-Star teams and totaled 24.2 bWAR.

Yes, but with a couple hundred thousand people testing positive daily in the United States (most of them asymptomatic), it seems strange to make it a headline. The article does talk about his job, though.

I like knowing who gets Covid. Normally we just get statistics, but when people we know get it, we actually get a sense for how bad this is vs just a statistic.

There are lies, damn lies and statistics.

The thing is, not everybody sees the same thing as everyone else, my wife and I are in healthcare and have been battling this disease since it broke. Masks can work, if you pair it with goggles and use only n95 masks. I’m afraid to say, but 95% of people aren’t wearing n95 masks which equals masks don’t work if they aren’t n95s WITH goggles!

I appreciate what you do, but unless you are doing the research on masks, you’re spreading mistruths. Yes, we should all be wearing n95 masks by this point but the federal government failed us on that point. Research has shown that cloth masks do help stop the spread of covid.

Haha, did you just say something about the federal government failing us? No buddy, this virus knows no politics! Cloth mask do ZERO to protect you from this virus, you cough, you sneeze, a cloth mask can NOT stop the small droplets, which means the virus becomes airborne. My wife and I both have had this virus, along with my two kids. We contacted it through the eyes in a hospital setting. We had n95 masks but science at the time had zero clue on how this passed from human to human. Hospital Ppe didn’t require and still doesn’t require goggles, but even dr doom fauci said really we should all be wearing goggles, social distancing, and wearing n95 masks! I get what your saying about not being able to get n95s, but don’t make a false statement that cloth masks work, cause that is 100% false!

Here’s an article by the CDC citing several studies: cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/masking-science…

Multilayer cloth masks REDUCE the emission and the inhalation of droplets that carry SARS-CoV-2. It is not perfect, but better than nothing.

Not wearing a mask to help prevent the spread of COVID because they aren’t perfect is like saying baseball players shouldn’t wear protective gear because they won’t prevent all injuries, or wear seatbelts because people still die in car accidents. Silly and dangerous.

Balk, let’s see your research on that. They are not perfect but due to lack of n95s that’s the best we have and combined with distancing and other measures they certainly do help! The government should have used the Defense Production Act to get n95s into the hands of everyone, it’s been almost a year for cryin’ out loud.

Makes no sense, first I never said don’t wear a mask, what I said is they don’t prevent droplets from escaping. If I wore a cloth mask and you wore a cloth mask it will NOT protect you. You can site all the dr doom fauci quotes you want, the science states that a cloth mask will NOT prevent the droplets from escaping. Facts! Also a cloth mask is like a dust mask. It doesn’t do crap! Use your brain man. The hospitals would be saying wear a cloth mask if you don’t have access to n95, they don’t say that cause they know cloth masks don’t work.

Grnmtbaseball, I’m a healthcare worker bud. I work in a hospital, if cloth masks work then why do the hospitals say no n95 masks then don’t come to work! In fact if you want to listen to dr doom fauci, he stated at first masks won’t do crap, only to change his mind, then to change his mind again and said n95 masks with goggles. Covid likes wet surfaces, it attacks the eyes! People who think a cloth mask will protect them they are living in a fantasy! You WILL get the virus if you wear just a cloth mask. I already had this along with my wife and two kids. We contacted it at work with n95 mask on but no goggles, we got it through our eyes. Bad conjunctivitis with lost of taste and sense of smell. But keep wearing your cloth masks when there’s plenty of n95s out there

This is an actual answer from the CDC.gov site:

CDC does not yet have evidence on the effectiveness of different types of cloth materials. Wearing cloth masks can help prevent people infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 from spreading the virus. Make sure your cloth mask: fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face, completely covers the nose and mouth, is secured with ties or ear loops, includes multiple layers of fabric, allows for breathing without restriction, and can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape. Cloth masks should NOT be worn by children less than 2 years old or anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

Cloth masks don’t work. Period bud, but hey I went to school for it and you know more right? SMH! You say I have literacy? Hahaha! Please don’t pretend to know something. Read the very first line, CDC has no information on whether cloth masks are effective! If they did why aren’t we told in hospitals while combating this virus it doesn’t matter if we wear cloth or not! Get a brain bud!

If cloth masks are so effective then why would surgical masks be less effective? Lol

          Surgical masks

Also called a medical mask, a surgical mask is a loose-fitting disposable mask that protects the wearer’s nose and mouth from contact with droplets, splashes and sprays that may contain germs. A surgical mask also filters out large particles in the air. Surgical masks may protect others by reducing exposure to the saliva and respiratory secretions of the mask wearer.

At this time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved any type of surgical mask specifically for protection against the coronavirus, but these masks may provide some protection when N95 masks are not available.

Bottom line is dude, this crap loves wet environments, it will attack the eyes, no mask will keep you from getting it! You can play along with everyone else and pretend that government shutdowns are going to help! California has been shut down nearly a year with some of the strictest measures and their cases keep skyrocketing! CDC says shut down the economy and now they realize all that did was cause a depression, with still high numbers of covid! But hey, everything cdc says is right huh? Haha

          Straight from the CDC website::

“CDC recommends community use of masks, specifically non-valved multi-layer cloth masks, to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Masks are primarily intended to reduce the emission of virus-laden droplets (“source control”), which is especially relevant for asymptomatic or presymptomatic infected wearers who feel well and may be unaware of their infectiousness to others, and who are estimated to account for more than 50% of transmissions.1,2 Masks also help reduce inhalation of these droplets by the wearer (“filtration for personal protection”). The community benefit of masking for SARS-CoV-2 control is due to the combination of these effects; individual prevention benefit increases with increasing numbers of people using masks consistently and correctly..”

And how many people do you see out there wearing double up cloth masks, that the cdc says have ZERO evidence of the effectiveness of cloth masks, but want you to believe that these masks are stopping droplets? They DONT STOP droplets from getting airborne bud! Read what you’re posting! CDC is just trying to get people to wear something for political purposes! Healthcare workers on the front line know exactly what works, HEAR ME, if cloth masks worked I would say they worked, but look at the data! There is NO slowing down this virus! People have been following this rule for months with cloth masks, and people are dying at the same rate and in some states worse. Michigan for example with one of the most draconian lockdowns are still having spikes, same for California wear I’m from and see people wearing cloth masks everywhere! Just because CDC states something doesn’t mean it’s true, that’s why they state they have ZERO evidence of the effectiveness of cloth masks! Cmon man, be a free thinker and not cling on!

Not wearing a mask is 100% effective in spreading the virus and wearing a mask is 100% effective in not spreading the virus. The virus is spread by people not wearing a mask, and not by people wearing a mask. It’s that simple, it’s not rocket science.

During the season it’s different – like every spring when we read about teams that have the flu going around.

It’s also different if someone is very sick. That’s news.

And for his wife to tweet that he tested positive, fine. That’s normal also. But to make it the title of an article here? Kinda weird.

Wearing a mask helps minimize the chances of getting inflicted. It doesn’t fully stop it from spreading. You then take it home with you and expose others before you realize you have it. Just look at the inner circles of the two men who ran for the Oval Office to identify the impact of wearing a mask and social distancing.

        I’m also really optimistic.
I’d convinced myself that after the election (however it went) the current divide & animosity would lessen. I felt we could begin moving forward & start putting our country back on track. Ya know…together? The way it needs to happen.

Thus far, that has not been my experience. Not even close. I’m seeing absolutely no grace in victory or defeat. I’m seeing the same unyielding divides.

@bravesfan – first of all, you got it all wrong. Ending pointless busywork “jobs” and “shutting down businesses” is exactly what was supposed to happen. Where the RIGHT wing govt failed the American people was to deny them a $2000+ a month living wage to help everyone get through this. Canada did it, every other country did it, America gave $1200 one time. They failed us, the people. The president is allowed to overwrite government to allow this to happen, the courts don’t even have to get involved – but the right wing only cares about billionaires. If they cared about the American people, we’d all have 5 figures in our bank accounts at all times. Yet few do.

“a virus that’s just not likely to kill you” is an abhorrent stance to take in front of millions of people who have indeed lost family members to this. You just proved conservatives really are massive, massive losers.

You need to apologize here or MLBTR really needs to start banning deniers like you. It’s simply disgusting to read. If you said this to my face you wouldn’t like what would happen next – but I’m guessing you have never had your card pulled in real life, that’s why you feel free to speak out about your moronic takes like this.

I’m not denying anything…. The virus exist and it can definitely be bad. But we have other diseases that flat out kill way more people per year that we do nothing about and we definitely don’t shut down an entire economy over any of them. I’m not denying this virus exist or doesn’t hurt people… BUT at some point you are just hurting people more than you’re helping them. Shutting down the entire economy is hurting far more people than this virus. And no one is talking about it…. riddle me that

“I work in healthcare on the frontlines…” *empties bedpan*

I have massive respect for anyone who works in healthcare no matter the job, but saying you work in healthcare does not make one in expert in healthcare.

          @grnmtn –

Ya know, this happens all the time. Someone relates actual real world experience (meaning from the category of: other than TV) & they get mocked.
          i.e. “empties bedpan”

Reading @bravesfan’s posts I thought it was fairly obvious that he is a thoughtful & fairly educated person. My guess is he’s not working in the hospital laundry, or whatever. Disagreeing is one thing. But to belittle a boots on the ground take seems pretty shallow & short-sighted.

I never read where he claimed to be some type of “expert in healthcare”. Ya know? He’s just giving us a first hand account which is pretty useful, man.

I am a RN on a very busy covid unit and i empty bed pans.. is that a bad thing to take care of patients? very condescending attitude towards people who care for all of our sick americans.

I’m not sure if this is for me, @sevans36. If it is, you are absolutely correct. Which is why I went with “hospital laundry”. More as an example of a job in a medical setting that really wouldn’t have much to do with direct care of patients as opposed to anything else.

          Hope that’s clear.
I didn’t do a very good job in how I expressed it, I guess.

          Hey look we communicated lol!

Thank you for the clarification though, serious. I’m really trying to hear people out & to be a reasonable fella.
Alas, it’s still a batting average kinda thing.
          But the spirit is willing.

I’ve nothing but respect for what you do. It’s truly amazing & I feel that on some basic level it’s just simply beyond me. So much easier to just build stuff, uh.

@tom, please cite your research or peer reviewed medical journal articles that prove “for a fact” that masks don’t work.
2nd point: if someone would still be alive if they didn’t get covid, then they died from covid.
Your logic is that a person who dies from a heart attack didn’t die from the heart attack but rather he/she died from clogged arteries (or whatever other reason may have contributed to the heart attack). That is not how our medical system classifies cause of death. Further, not all who have died from covid have been older or those with other medical conditions. It is much more rare, but some younger,
otherwise healthy people, including teens and younger, have died from covid. That is a fact.

Birx admitted it, fauci admitted it,and so have other dr/ medical examiners/coroners around the country that were on tv….if you are in a hospital dying of a disease and catch covid then die, its being listed on the death certificate…b4 you ask me, im not your student or your kid.look it up yourself if you dont believe me ….

@tom, I am guessing that your trusted news sources are different than mine. One can “look up” whatever they want. That’s why I stated “peer reviewed medical journals” like the New England Journal of Medicine, or the Lancet. Have you heard of those? And, even if it’s true (I don’t believe it is) that…..those in the hospital dying from another illness “catch covid then die” that they put covid as the cause of death……that does not account for over 300,000 people who got covid, went to the hospital, and died from it.

Cant explain this any easier..if you are dying of cancer/hiv-aids,diabetes etc, in hospice,in your last 5 minutes of life you then catch covid, die, they are listing cause of death as covid…if you dont believe this them you need to find the videos for yourself to finally get this

Tom, if this were actually happening, it wouldn’t be breaking news that is posted on YouTube “videos.” It would be reported in the real news sources. Let’s just agree to disagree. I hope you and your loved ones stay healthy and have a nice holiday.

Should shut the comments down on these articles. It always turns political. Which I don’t understand cause it’s a worldwide epidemic but somehow it’s always an American politician’s fault.
