Marlins Acquire Zach Pop From Diamondbacks

By TC Zencka | December 10, 2020 at 1:38pm CDT

The Miami Marlins have acquired Zach Pop from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later, the Marlins announced. Pop was taken with the sixth pick of today’s Rule 5 draft from the Baltimore Orioles.

This marks the second deal made with players selected in today’s draft, following the Pirates acquisition of Luis Oviedo, which was announced just moments after the Mets made the selection. Oviedo was selected from the Cleveland Indians organization.

Pop, 24, came to the Orioles as part of the Manny Machado trade. He missed all but eight appearances of the 2019 season with Tommy John surgery, but he remains an intriguing bullpen arm. He boasts a sterling 1.34 ERA across three minor league seasons.

After adding Pop and catcher Paul Campbell from the Rays with their own pick in the Rule 5 draft, the Marlins 40-man roster is currently full.

They could use some pop in the lineup. Too bad he’s a pitcher.

The pun is known as the lowest form of humor, so…there’s that. It really needs to be used incredibly selectively, lest it become tiresome and grating. Used selectively, judiciously, it can be fun, even funny.

They honestly don’t have many fits in FA. Yeah, Hand would be nice, but could be a little too pricey for their pallet while he could be facing a downtrend much like how Andrew Miller fell off.

I think they’ll be more active in FA next offseason, especially with their LF, CF, and SS all hitting FA.

They’ve also got some young talent coming up whom they don’t want to block in FA.

I agree that Mets fans can’t say much, but I don’t know if I’d be celebrating the Marlins’ first season over .500 (by only two games) in 11 years, in a COVID-shortened season, as some kind of accomplishment

Mets need to make more moves than just Trevor May to be good. Offense may be good, but outside of deGrom and possibly Stroman, there are so many questions in their pitching staff.

“Even in a 60-game season, the Marlins will finish 15 games out of fourth place; 25 games out of first.”

The Mets were trash for the majority of the 162 game seasons they’ve played so I fail to see your point.

        • MetsFan22

The last time the Mets played a full season they won 86 games…. when was the last time the marlins did that. They would also have won 90+ in most divisions in 2019 bc the bow east was so good that year

        • MetsFan22

Peterson isn’t really a questio. And a lot of teams have holes rn that why it’s the offseason.. Braves haven’t replaced Ozuna or Duvall but I’m expecting them too so that why they are first. I’m expecting the Mets to get two pitchers.

        • MarlinsFanBase

I seem to remember when I said that in a 60-game season, the Marlins had a shot. Then someone said, “Even in a 60-game season, the Marlins will finish 15 games out of fourth place; 25 games out of first.”

I would’ve thought that the person that argued against what I stated upon seeing the shortened season wouldn’t reverse his stance. But of course, it’s the same person that talks about OBP and dismisses Bavg. when it comes to Brandon Nimmo, but talks about Bavg. when it comes to Amed Rosario. All of this says a lot.
