Mets Designate Corey Oswalt

By Jeff Todd | February 10, 2021 at 7:17pm CDT

The Mets have designated righty Corey Oswalt for assignment, per a team announcement. His roster spot will go to Albert Almora, whose previously reported deal is now official.

Oswalt, 27, has received several MLB opportunities over the past three seasons. All told, he carries a 6.19 ERA with a 16.4% strikeout rate, 7.5% walk rate, and 41.3% groundball rate through 84 1/3 innings of action.

None of those stats jump off the page. Likewise, Oswalt doesn’t throw particularly hard and didn’t produce gaudy peripherals in the minors. That said, he has produced full-season, sub-3.00 ERA efforts at the Double-A and Triple-A levels and could hold appeal elsewhere as a depth arm.

Beat me to it. I loved Roy Oswalt when he was a Philly. I met him once. He was truly down to earth and humble.

We were so spoiled from 2007-2011. Only one championship, but such great teams. Loved Oswalt as well. That was one of the greatest rotations in recent history. Nothing but fond memories of Oswalt’s time in Philly.

Should of DA’d Drew Smith or Daniel Zamora, Oswalt better than both of them

Horrible take. Smith hasn’t been healthy but has much better stuff. Zamora might go next or Tarpley since they are both Loogies.

No relation to Roy, apparently. Is Oswalt the most unusual surname to have 2 unrelated players in MLB? I’ve never heard of that name apart from those two.

If Major League Baseball was smart, they would have an annual day honoring names like Corey, Jody, and Madison. All boys with a girl’s first name get in for half-price. They should also pay tribute to Cory Snyder for breaking MLB’s Cory Barrier in 1986.

Corey/Cory is much more predominantly used as a boy’s name.
