Blue Jays Claim Joel Payamps

By Jeff Todd | February 10, 2021 at 7:56pm CDT

The Blue Jays won a waiver claim to acquire righty Joel Payamps from the Red Sox, per TSN’s Scott Mitchell (via Twitter). Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com had tweeted that the move appeared to be in the works.

Payamps has never appeared with the Boston organization, which claimed him earlier in the offseason only to designate him for assignment when a roster need arose. The 26-year-old first reached the upper minors in 2017 but has only received limited MLB chances to this point. It’s certainly possible he’ll end up on the DFA carousel as teams compete to see who’ll be able to slip him through waivers in hopes of stashing him for depth.

What…? You DFA Anthony Castro, trade Perez, SRF, and Diaz… and use a roster spot on Payamps???

Is there honestly a measurable difference between any of those four arms? Seems like bodies replacing bodies…

If that’s what you want to call it, sure. Or sign a SP since the Jays have a Swiss cheese starting rotation. Or add an up and coming arm within the organization and make sure the next player you drop is Derek Fisher followed by Palacios.

No need for Payamps. Do you need further explanation so you can self upvote your next comment?

Do you think he is not going to be DFA and stay on the 40 man? Keep up or don’t comment. The Blue Jays are obvious World Series contenders with 45 major league worthy players.

Imagine getting upset that you’re team makes a waiver claim? You can tell these people don’t watch baseball at all. Teams claim these guys mostly to add depth and to try and sneak through waivers so they can stash them at AAA when they need a fresh arm.

^jason: “But first of all realize every team has 12000 plus innings to be covered.”

Wow, that’s about 74 innings per game in a regular season.

Jason it’s a move the Jays did not need to bother with as there is still a glaring hole in the pitching staff. If you are receiving validations from the likes of Iver and JDGoat you should probably retract everything you said. Both applaud failure from the Blue Jays and do not care to see success from the team.

They got an asset back for three players that don’t matter. Flyer guys. And now they grabbed another flyer guy that’s also replaceable. Not a big deal. You have to fill out the 40 man. As soon as someone better comes along they will move on from payamps.

Backwards, the Jays do this and get very little out of it. Atkins has nothing better to do than dumpster dive for players, especially pitching. It is well known in MLB circles that the Jays cannot scout at the professional level very well, so they claim these guys over the years and hoping they stick.

All the while they haven’t addressed the most important need, elite starting pitching. This team is going NOWHERE without adding elite starting pitching.

BY mid season we’ll see the rotation in tatters because they can’t pitch more than 1 turn of the batting order. At the same time, the bullpen should be well burnt out by then,.

Oh but they claim a guy like Payamps who wouldn’t be found on a championship team. When Gillick claimed guys, he knew what they could do. Shapiro and Atkins do not know.

I like some of the additions that have been made in Semien and Springer. Matz is an injury waiting to happen. Matz was a stupid, stupid trade. Chatwood will be okay if he sticks to the pen. Yates will be good too. Liriano is a joke signing. Cole and Urena and very good minor league signings.

          Jimmer they don’t get it.

We’ve seen these moves happen over and over. At least the jokers who call themselves Jays fans didn’t use the old “low risk” crap they’ve done before. There are plenty of cuttable players on the Jays. There are many 40-man candidates. There are several pitchers out there the Jays can sign.

But I have a feeling the organization is ready to roll with the team they have.

Scout, how well do you regard the wrists of matz? I’m looking to wager a large sum of frankincense and id really appreciate the advice of an experienced tee ball evaluator.

They have the 3rd best farm in all of baseball. As well as plenty of good young players already on the team. This is how you rebuild. Just relax. They will get starting pitching. You can’t just sign every player in free agency. They made some moves now they continue to develop. That’s how baseball works. And they gave up nothing for matz. Not a big deal

Being one of those guys who gets passed through waivers 10 times a year has got to be stressful, but there are a lot of those guys. They could limit the number of these types of roster moves in the next CBA (say anybody claimed on waivers must stay on the roster for 3 months or there’s a penalty), but I don’t think the union cares.

There is just so much wrong with jimmetee’s post, I don’t know where to start. These are very low risk moves, that literally cost the Jays nothing, but cash. If he works out, great! If not, you let him go. Zero risk. And to say its well known around the MLB that the Jays can’t scout, are you kidding me? What a ridiculous statement to pretend to know what is in MLB circles. Bullpen arms are a dime a dozen, and over the last few years, the Jays have spent smaller amounts of money on the bullpen, and grabbed projects because of how low the risk was. The casual fans don’t know the names, because they aren’t sexy, but the Jays bullpens have been decent, but guys like you freak out because they aren’t signing Hendricks, Yates, Rosenthal, and trading for Hader.

Saying the Matz trade is stupid, shows your knowledge of the subject…again, incredibly low risk, for a guy that has shown success at the MLB level and isn’t even 30. Sure he’s had some injuries, but he also had a 3.4 era over 22 starts in 2016, and an era just over 4 in 62 starts over 2018 and 2019. He wasn’t obtained to be their #2 or #3, it was a depth move, with a chance for him to be their #5, and the best prospect they gave was ranked 28th I believe.

Liriano, same as above, zero risk move. He had a good year in 2019 and is a lefty out of the pen, why not?

It honestly seems like you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. I’ve seen several posts of yours, and they keep getting dumber and dumber.

That is because he doesn’t have a clue about what he is talking about but he is arrogant as anyone posting on these boards. He claims he is a former scout which is extremely laughable. His weak wrists and weak core about Bichette is the icing on the cake. I just wish he would go away but we can’t be so lucky.

A former MLB scout? Hahahahaha…amazing. There is zero chance a former MLB scout is visiting, and posting on MLBtraderumors.com, and then actually admitting that? Give me a break. And I’ve looked at a lot of scouting reports on Bichette, and never seen anything about a weak core or weak wrists…and to claim you are a scout, and to be this painfully wrong on Bichette is amazing. No one should ever take what this guy says seriously.

Can’t we all just get along

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, we all don’t have to agree and sign and hold hands

Some dumb moves will pay off, some smart moves will flop. It’s the nature of dealing with the human element

I have faith. The Jays will have an outstanding year. If things break right, we have a shot
