Tigers Designate John Schreiber For Assignment

By Connor Byrne | February 12, 2021 at 4:32pm CDT

The Tigers announced that they have designated right-hander John Schreiber for assignment to make room for newly signed outfielder Nomar Mazara.

Schreiber, a Michigan native whom the Tigers chose in the 15th round of the 2016 draft, came out of their bullpen in each of the previous two seasons. The 26-year-old has totaled 28 2/3 innings in the majors thus far and recorded a 6.28 ERA, though some of his other numbers are far more encouraging. For instance, Schreiber has logged a 3.65 SIERA with strikeout and walk percentages that check in far above average (25.6 and 6.2 percent, respectively).

Schreiber has accrued 59 1/3 innings in Triple-A ball, where he has pitched to an excellent 2.28 ERA and amassed 70 strikeouts against 21 walks. He has three minor league options left, so some other team could take a chance on him in a trade or via waivers in the next week.

Not that I think Schreiber is going to amount to much but Stewart makes a lot more sense with them bringing in Mazara

They already lost 2 OFs to waiver claims. Can’t spare another. Also can’t believe they gave Mazara a major league contract! He’s terrible. He’s Stewart without the ability to take a walk.

As a Rangers fan Mazara isn’t terrible. He’s good enough for a 20 HR season at the floor, but his ceiling isn’t very high

Really? He’s younger and has 4 20 hr seasons in the bigs. How about Stewart?

Good minor league numbers. Someone will take a chance on him.

Stewart survives yet again. Tigers still need more pitching, one starter, one reliever at the least, he’s gotta be the next guy in line now, right? Finally? Maybe? I hope. Smh.

NOT happening. Stewart has some pop in his bat, barely over 1 year of service time and 3 options left. Going nowhere at this juncture. Plus, the Tigers get two spots on the roster opening up next ween when they can put Faedo and Wentz on the 60 day IL (both recovering from TJ surgery).

Pop in your bat means little when you’re 27 and haven’t done anything at the Mlb level. He will be dfa. He will not be on the 40 man.

Not happening. Stewart has some pop in his bat, barely over a year of service time, and 3 options left. He is going nowhere at this juncture. He’ll get his chance to work his way back from Toledo and provide depth in case of injury. Tigers also pick up 2 roster spots next week when Faedo and Wentz both get put on the 60 day IL (recovering from TJ surgery). They do not need any bullpen help at this juncture. More than enough arms to cover. A starter maybe as they were on record earlier stating they would like to add 2 starters this off season.

Was wondering if the Tigers would wait until next week to make this official, when they can pick up two roster spots when Wentz and Faedo can be put on the 60 day IL. Guess not. Many hope he passes through waivers, that would be nice. But don’t count on it. We haven’t had a guy clear waivers all off season.

I believe Eric Haase cleared waivers, but your point is well taken.

Tigers got to be hoping eventually these guys won’t be claimed. They were better off losing them in rule 5, if they didn’t stick they’d have spots open after season starts

Hope Schreiber can stick with the Tigers. Methinks, someone will pick him off waivers.

Al is great. I thought ChiCubs would have been interested in this guy when packaged with Candy, Soto and Short…….
Golly. A little late in the off-season now……but there is always a chance. Poor me.

I like Al. he is wonderful GM and a great baseball guy. I don’t like to talk publicly about trading our great Tiger players but – aren’t all teams, except BOS, in the AL East – currently in a pissing match with each other? They ALL NEED (or needed) PITCHING. Trading our 3 top starters has got to be worth a top prospects. They have ’em.
    Go Al!
    Go Tigers!
