Cubs Return Rule 5 Pick Gray Fenter To Orioles

By Connor Byrne | March 12, 2021 at 4:40pm CDT

The Cubs have returned Rule 5 Draft pick Gray Fenter to the Orioles, per an announcement from Baltimore. The O’s have assigned the right-hander to major league spring training as a reserve.

Fenter was a seventh-round pick of the Orioles in 2015 who joined the franchise for a massive bonus ($1MM) relative to his draft position. While Fenter has since pitched to a 3.21 ERA and struck out over 10 batters per nine in 230 minor league innings, the 25-year-old hasn’t climbed above the Single-A level yet. He also underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016, wiping out that season and a large portion of the next year for him.

Fenter had an excellent year during the most recent minors season, 2019, when he logged a 1.81 ERA in 94 1/3 innings in Single-A. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote last December that Fenter “sat 91-93 and touched 95” that season.

Not enough advanced baseball experience to carry him on the team all season…makes sense

I think with a full healthy minor league season he’ll be an Oriole in 2022. He’s got the stuff but not the time on the mound. Or maybe not. What the hell do I know?

          Good advice.

MLBTR, as a whole, has a good stream of info. The writers work hard to give readers timely, mostly accurate info from across the league and most fans comments (+/-) offer something to the conversation…

These ‘Trolls’ comments are them throwing trash out their window while driving down the road… somehow they think they are being cool(?)

Btw .. wishing Fenter luck w/the O’s he is good enough to deserve a shot, just not as a rule 5

How you know if he’s any good if you don’t give him a chance. Teams are ruining players career because they don’t have an ERA below 3.

Rucker further along the path to MLB than Fenter. Cubs were able to strengthen staff after seeing full season with some fans possible. Made Fenter expendable.

        Not yet at least.

As of 2031, every team will have their draft pick slot determined by their win-loss records. The decision was announced as being approved by the team-picked player representatives, team owners, and commissioner Rob Manfred the II.
