Padres’ Jacob Nix Suffers Elbow Injury; Tommy John Surgery Possible

By Steve Adams | March 10, 2021 at 2:49pm CDT

Padres righty Jacob Nix could require Tommy John surgery after sustaining another elbow injury, tweets Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Nix, once a touted draft prospect, had a UCL injury two years ago that he rehabbed after undergoing platelet-rich plasma treatment.

Now 25 years old, Nix made it to the big leagues with the Padres in 2018 and started nine games, during which time he was tagged for a grisly 7.02 ERA. He missed most of the 2019 season with that UCL injury and was removed from the 40-man roster that October — not long after being arrested on trespassing charges (to which he eventually pled guilty). Between the injury and the arrest, Nix unsurprisingly went unclaimed on waivers.

Nix didn’t pitch with the Padres in 2020 and was not part of their 60-man player pool. He hasn’t been on the mound in a game setting since making one appearance in the 2019 Arizona Fall League. With Tommy John surgery now once again back on the table as a possibility for the righty, Nix could be out of game action until the 2022 season, depending on the course of treatment for his latest injury. With clubs likely to cycle through a broad range of pitchers and a few injuries on the San Diego staff already, Nix at least had a chance to return to the big leagues if healthy.

I wonder what Nix and Cosgrove were actually planning on doing. I know they had been drinking and said they thought they were at Nix’s house, but… They snuck in through a doggy door. Nix himself admitted that his house didn’t even have a doggy door. There is no way either of them actually thought that was Nix’s house. What the heck could they have been planning on doing? And what is it about San Diego Padres pitchers that make them want to trespass into random people’s houses through their doggy door? Something really weird is going on here and it definitely is not Nix confusing his house with someone else’s. That’s like me confusing someone else’s car with my motorcycle… even though I had to enter the car through a sunroof… that I know my motorcycle didn’t have… and on top of that doing it with my buddy… who also knew I drove a motorcycle but happened to confuse a car with it at the exact same time I did… and he came in through the sunroof, too.

Perhaps you should try Googling “stupid things people have done while drunk.” It happens.

        • BrittinghamSports

I have Googled that many times. I didn’t have to this time. I just had to Google what Nix and Cosgrove did that night. Broke into a house they had never been to? Check. Got kicked in the face during the process? Check. Got tasered afterwards? Check. Claimed they thought it was their house? Check. Admitted they knew Nix’s house had no doggy door, that exact same night? Check. Admitted Nix didn’t even own a dog, that same night? Check Snuck into the house through a doggy door? Check. What is “not really to any” of any of those known facts. You might not like my analogy but those are all facts. I don’t care if they were drinking or not. Nobody thinks they are crawling into a house with no doggy door WHILE they are going through a doggy door. Especially when it is 2 people at the exact same time who both know there is no doggy door. The chances of that happening to one person is almost zero. The chances of that happening to 2 people at the exact same time is even less. I have no idea what they were going to do if they got in that house without the owner catching them. I’m just saying they obviously weren’t “confused” about the fact it wasn’t Nix’s house. It’s far more likely they just decided not to admit any plans that hadn’t happened yet in order to reduce the chances of catching extra charges from the police. It may have been something as simple as they were out of drinks and saw a bottle of wine on the table or something. The problem is that if they had admitted that it would be a confession to attempted burglary. The police can’t charge you for a crime that didn’t happen if you never admit that’s what you were trying to do. Do you really think they both forgot this wasn’t there house at the same time while crawling through a tiny door they knew for a fact didn’t even exist in there house? Or do you think it’s more plausible they ran out of drinks and decided to take a peak inside once they saw the doggy door to try to keep the night rolling (or literally ANY other possible scenario)? Nobody confuses a house with their doggy doorless house while they are literally crawling through a doggy door. Their explanation was smart to say for legal reasons but it was obviously made up. That’s all I’m really saying. What is “not really” about that?

They were DRUNK. I have seen many drunk people walk into the wrong house. I myself have gone through a dog door. It happens.

They gave the cab driver his address. He brought them to a house with the same number, a similar street name and in the same development!

Are you trying to say that you think Nix is a burglar? That there is some kind of huge conspiracy to cover up…what? Or do you think a young idiot got drunk and did some incredibly stupid things? The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

        • Yankee Clipper

Hudson, that’s the lamest excuse for a burglary… I’d be willing to bet you wouldn’t dismiss it so quickly if it were your home. I’ve never, ever had any friend, or friend of a friend, enter the wrong home (especially through a doggie door that his own home never had) because he was too drunk.

You’re right, simplest explanation is likely the correct one- he entered unlawfully with nefarious intent. You realize there’s a reason why nearly every state has a statute citing that intoxication is not a valid defense, right?

He and Rich Hill can start a jail rotation during their next stay at Sheriff x’s hotel!

What about “Hey dude, I bet you can’t fit through that doggie door” “Okay $50 says I can”

        • Hudson6

          @ Yankee Clipper

I used to work at a hotel. I went to breakfast in the cafeteria one morning and heard a call for help. I looked up to find a naked man in a palm tree. Apparently a guest had gotten trashed and bet his buddy he could climb it in the middle of the night and fell asleep there. We had to get him out with a scissor lift.

People do stupid things when they are drunk. The house didn’t belong to Nix, he was renting. Minor league ballplayers live in a lot of different houses in a lot of different places.

Why do you think Nix was there? Murder? Rape? Steal a TV? How many burglars take a TAXI to a job? What do they tell the driver? Can they tip the driver with a can of beer they stole from the house?

    • cryptonerd

Right, will someone make a doggie door that will fit a human already?

Side note: remind Nix that he doesn’t have a dog or doggie door.

      Hard life.

He needs to be picked off waivers by the Pirates or Marlins to have a chance. The dude is the Padres 30th best prospect in mlb.com top 30 prospects and he’s 25-26, not very good even when we were bad.. Needs to go to a team that he can make $5M off of before he’s done

I feel like with him not being on the 40 man he was going to be behind Morejon, Baez, Lawson, and Weathers for spot starts anyway. I might be wrong on this, but I think Espinoza and Thompson are fully “relief pitchers” at this point, but conceivably those guys could even get run out there ahead of him too. With Gore theoretically needing a 40 man spot at some point this season, it would have made it even harder for him to make the jump onto the roster.

Basically I think theres about 4-7 guys who would have plugged rotation holes before him. That all being said, always is a bummer to see an elbow injury like this.

always wondered how he performed so poorly. dude brings it. I’d like to think I could guarantee a modicum of success even at the big league level if I only had a 97 mph fastball. hopefully he recovers fully and can figure it out.

Dude is lucky to be alive. Go read his arrest story. Tried to enter a home thru a doggy door so drunk he couldn’t talk to the cops later. He only got kicked in the face and hit with a taser. A college classmate of mine was at a party, had too much to drink or had a spiked drink, tried to enter thru someone’s screen door, and was greeted with a shotgun & self defense.

Hope he’s on the straight and narrow. He’s had a helluva trip. I still remember the whole Aiken thing and him getting screwed as a by-stander. Good luck kid

Hmmmm…. Nix opted for PRP treatment instead of TJ in 2019 and now is looking at TJ in 2021 so he’s probably out until ’23, maybe very late ’22. Can anyone think of another Padre hurler that has opted for PRP recently? Just a matter of time until we hear he’s headed for TJ as well……
