The Red Sox and Blue Jays continue their divisional tug-of-war over right-hander Joel Payamps. The Blue Jays claimed Payamps from Boston today, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (via Twitter). Payamps began the winter as a member of the Diamondbacks, with whom he made four appearances totaling seven innings over the past two seasons. The Red Sox claimed the 26-year-old at the end of November, but since early February he’s been passed back and forth between Boston and Toronto every two weeks. The Blue Jays claimed him on February 10th. The Red Sox claimed him back on February 22nd. Today the Blue Jays have claimed him again, designating Jacob Waguespack for assignment to make room, adds Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca (via Twitter). This isn’t perhaps the stakes that we’ve come to expect out of AL East rivalries, but it’s about as good as it gets this time of year. Let’s see what other news is fit to print…
- Red Sox prospect Bryan Mata has a slight tear in his UCL, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne (via Twitter). Mata will avoid surgery for now, though there’s no timetable for his return. Mata is the 4th-ranked prospect in Boston’s system per Baseball America. He’s ranked third in their system by Fangraphs. Obviously, if rest and rehab don’t do the trick, a long road to recovery may await the 21-year-old right-hander. For now, however, Mata and the Red Sox remain optimistic. He made it as high as Double-A in 2019 with 11 starts, a 5.03 ERA/3.99 FIP and promising 52.1 percent groundball rate.
- Roberto Osuna will hold a showcase for teams in the Dominican Republic on March 12th, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). Osuna is still just 26-years-old, but he made only four appearances with the Astros in 2020. After initially being diagnosed with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, Osuna sought a second opinion and chose to rehab the injury instead. Osuna, of course, was already a fairly high-risk signing – at least from an optics perspective – even before the injury because of a 75-game suspension under the MLB-MLBPA Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy back in 2018. That said, when healthy, he’s been an incredibly productive bullpen arm, most recently leading the American League with 38 saves in 2019. He owns a 2.74 ERA and 2.76 FIP over 315 innings for his career.

Twins get it done!! A healthy Osuna can close 4 us when Rogers & Colome set up
Rangers29
Hypothetical: You are the GM of a team looking for bullpen help. Osuna is coming off of an injury rattled campaign, and still isn’t at top shape. Despite that he says that his asking price is 16 over 2 years. With all of the demons in his closet taken into account, do you sign him?
bencole
No, coming off injury and not in shape he’s maybe a 1 year $4 million guy. I certainly would try to find value in that his market is diminished due to his moral history, but just in the baseball side he’s not worth anywhere close to that IMO
thebaseballfanatic
Uh, no.
dan55
If I was a Gm, I’d sign him to a one year $2 million contract with a $5 million option for a second year. His injury and personal issues prevent him from getting $8 million/year.
LordD99
No. Perhaps a very low base salary, maybe no more than $1M, but with incentives based on appearances that could make it lucrative if he stays healthy.
Bochys Retirement Fund
I’d sign him up two years in prison.
drtymike0509
I’d sign him to a contract with enough length to cover a TJ rehab if I’m looking multi-year. If only to try to recover post injury value but that’s a tough contract to finish based on all the baggage. Therefore 1 year with heavy incentives for finishing games(or something comparable) is all I would do. You could get creative, the giants did with Alex wood and his injury history. Considering he is only 26 and has been dominate in the recent past. He got paid around 6.5m last full season and was supposed to make around 10m last year before prorated, I could be wrong. Something like a 1 year deal no higher than 5m base with incentives to hit double digits not larger than 12m. Chapman is making 5 mil more than that, again I think that’s right. If he performs he gets himself a raise and a nice platform year.
stymeedone
If he’s putting on a showcase, I would have to believe he is in top shape. I also have not heard that is his asking price. You seem to have put come conditions to your scenario that may not exist in reality. Yes he has baggage, much like Chapman.
racosun
Agreed.
looiebelongsinthehall
Chapman at the time was the ultimate closer and his “baggage” was strictly off the field. No injury issues at the time.
vtadave
Uh no?
PIONEER 8
Nope

Rangers29 – Great question!! Integrity, none in Boston since they hired Cora so the answer is ABSOLUTELY. Bring all the liars, cheaters and criminals you can find to improve the 65 win Red Sox. It makes perfect sense. Remember, nobody cared that Cora sucked at his job so why should anyone care if Osuna isn’t good coming off his injuries? It’s a no brainer and a perfect fit for a Henry owned team. The real bonus is they can call it yet another diversity hire!!! Nobody will suspect them of being racists with regard to Mookie and Price!!

Guys I saw David Fletcher yesterday and he struck out. Should I ask for my money back?

Does rehabbing instead of TJS when it’s recommended ever work? People will point to Tanaka, but remember TJS was NEVER recommended for Tanaka. The top three sports surgeons all examined his elbow and all recommended against TJS.
dan55
Since we don’t know the severity of Osuna’s elbow injury, it is impossible to say definitively. But definitely most pitchers who try to avoid TJS eventually end up getting it anyway.
Rsk3228
I can say it did not work for Seranthony
HalosHeavenJJ
If they pitch for the Angels, no.
Samuel
Have you ever faced surgery over something job related? Something that if it doesn’t work out correctly can disqualify you from ever doing that job again? Something that a work colleague had agreed to that turned south and pretty much ruined his/her life…….and maybe their families as well?
Have you ever had surgery? Something that you were led to believe was a common procedure. Then dealt with months and maybe years of rehab (when you were told it would take a fraction of that time), only to find that unexpected complications had occurred and you might need more surgery and more rehab just to get back to 70% of what you were healthy?
–
It’s nice to be a sports fan and pass judgement on a player electing to go though physical treatments, diet modification and intense physical exercise instead of just allowing someone to carve up their body and then follow rehab instructions.
–
Almost all doctors I’ve known have said that surgery is a last resort. Then again, due to socialized and computerized medicine taking over in America today, it’s well known that just about the only medical professionals that are raking in the big bucks today are the surgeons. If you or someone in your family has not been exposed to this reality, trust me – it’s only a matter of time. Then see how easy a decision it is to make.

Nothing shows respect to a player like just flipping him back and forth between two teams like a child in a parent custody battle
smuzqwpdmx
Time to work out a dual custody arrangement. Payamps can pitch for the Blue Jays on weekdays and the Red Sox on weekends.
its_happening
Payamps sweepstakes heating up.
If Osuna’s fastball is back he’ll have some bids.
neo
Red vs Blue tug of war, it’s a battle to the death… the death of Payamps, who will certainly split in two before anybody wins this contest.
HalosHeavenJJ
Which owners will approve of their GM bringing on Osuna?
Houston, obviously. They have no standards.
The Mets kept Reyes, the Cubs tried to help their kid. But different ownership for the Mets and both those players had longstanding relationships with the teams.
Boston? They need a closer and the fan base cares nothing about character in any sport.
Yanks? They have Chapman. He’s shot up a wall instead of pummeling a woman, but still.
I understand a young man can grow and learn but as an owner I wouldn’t want his name associated with my brand.
bobtillman
Your criticism of Boston’s sports-dom is legitimate, but domestic violence is another matter. Much more importantly, signing Osuna would be bad PR, and the last thing the Sox need right now (as they look forward to an August when more people will be watching Mother Angelica reruns than NESN) is bad PR.
Petty sure they pass on Osuna.
PIONEER 8
Boston Sports doesn’t tolerate any of that crap.Look at Jared Porter Callaway,Ray Rice,Les Miles, the player from the Seahawks, the coach on Urban Myers’Ohio State team etc…?,nothing against those people but you don’t see none of that happening in Boston Sports.Porter and Calloway had their incidents happening while in New York with the Mets.Sexting harassment capital of the world.
HalosHeavenJJ
Boston hasn’t tolerated any of that crap yet. Massive roid use on the Papi/Manny teams, widespread cheating by the Patriots, plenty of criminal acts by Patriots, but no domestic violence that I can think of.
I wonder if Boston’s “I don’t care how, just win” attitude towards sports would influence an owner in this scenario. I know not all bad behavior is equal and I too frown upon Osuna more than I do Papi, which says a lot because I bemoan Papi.
PIONEER 8
I would love to agree with you for steroid use is everywhere and in all of the sports it ain’t just in one city?,but you got deflategate and Aaron Hernandez.however Hernandez went outside the lines of humanity just like Rae Carruth from the Panthers. however the Patriots didn’t have Hernandez’ back after he did what he did he was on his own.New England teams don’t like losers, they are non-supported.I don’t know why you hate Papi,so much he didn’t do anything but you’re entitled to hate whoever you want to but New England teams don’t tolerate that crap.Boston Sports does not tolerate that crap. The topic was Osuna and his domestic violence baggage. As far as owners go look at John Henry the owner now at the present time for the Red Sox he wouldn’t have to be influenced from it?,he wouldn’t tolerate that crap, you’d be out of here instantly, gone bye,C-ya. New England Sports Boston Sports they feel so strongly about domestic violence and stuff like that child abuse all that stuff it’s used as a deterrent that’s why New England and Boston Sports don’t tolerate that crap
its_happening
Boston has skeletons in their closet. Don’t think they are saints.
Too add to Halo’s statement, don’t forget Brett Myers.

Everyone’s an individual. Sometimes events change people. Usually not…..but sometimes.
It’s not my place to determine what someone else should do with their life.
I don’t know if my mailmen are racist, gay, child beaters, readers, or wonderful human beings. I just know that he/she delivers my mail on time, and I’ve never had run in’s with them. On-line developers are even more distant to me – I don’t even know for sure what area of the world they live in, or what part of the app I’m using was developed and maintained by them.
There’s a big problem today in American society. Too many think they can join a crowd and bully others as to what is acceptable to think, say, and do. We have laws. That’s enough. Lot’s of laws. In fact, we’re drowning in laws and making dozens more every day (Law Schools bring great income to colleges – been a growth industry for over 50 years…..right ahead of Psychology and Drug Rehab). And since there are so many contradictory laws, we unknowingly violate 2 Felonies and a half-dozen Misdemeanors each day by the time we go to the head, shower, have something to drink, and leave our dwellings in the morning.
So how do you think the Giants will do this year?
smuzqwpdmx
The Yankees have German too. A third pitcher with domestic violence problems couldn’t make things any worse.
PIONEER 8
Exactly. Females have a tough tough time in the state of New York those guys are crazy!?.
HalosHeavenJJ
Forgot about German. Yeah, that’s pretty bad having 2. Bringing in a third would be a true signal of not caring about the issue at all.

Astros2333
Before taking a jab at teams about their standards you should make sure your team doesn’t have a cloud over their head. What Osuna did is inexcusable but owners don’t really care, and most fans overlook it by buying the players jersey. If he can pitch a team will sign him.
PIONEER 8
How can you be an Astros fan and tell me about a team standards.I mean are you an Astros fan or is that just part of your online moniker? If you’re an Astro fan after that cheating in baseball Scandal, that they had,you can’t tell me about me talking about a teams’ standards?.I replied to somebody else saying that Boston doesn’t care about standards.I never bashed Osuna.Osuna bashed himself,he gashed his career.Osuna has the chance and gotten the chance to do things that many of us could only dream of?He gets to have the opportunity to play in Major League Baseball and be a picther.I know lots of people that would love to be in his position. it’s not my fault he’s squandering his opportunity away and that he did what he did? I didn’t make him go out there and beat up that woman? He did that on his own.I hate that he did it but there’s nothing I can do about it.I don’t have to bash judge or condemn him.I leave that for everybody else, the professionals. You know the people who feel as though that they’re better than everybody else.If he decides to squander is Once In A Million lifetime opportunity away?,that’s his business.I don’t care that you won’t catch me feeling sorry for him.I feel sorry for the victim. He’s got millions of dollars.I got to get up and go to work in the morning to pay rent.I got no reason for me to feel sorry for him.I don’t care if he pitches in the majors again.I just hope that he doesn’t hit or beat up anybody else. It’s not my fault he doesn’t understand what he’s got and what opportunity he was given.Maybe you should tell him.I don’t understand how the fact that he’s got lots of money and can have any girl that he wants, why would he have to do that? You should make sure your team doesn’t have a scandal and dirty laundry and living in a glass house while throwing stones before you step to the next man’s team. Not only does the Houston Astros cheat in baseball but they think it’s cool for domestic violence to happen. They are willing to give Osuna $$Millions$$ for it.Boston Sports doesn’t play that crap.Nor do they condone it.Your Astros do though. And so will any team that signs him. I wouldn’t be mad at any team that does sign him he’s not my problem. He is society’s problem It’s just sad though that people value winning at all costs and feels though a player could be rewarded $$millions$$ of dollars for doing things like that. You have your information wrong cuz you jumped in on a conversation that didn’t involve you and didn’t know what you was talkin about.Resign him back to your team?,you will both be happy. Women won’t be though.?
Joe Carters walkoff
Well in truth, nobody knows what happened between Osuna and his girlfriend R.Cota. She went back on her words, refused to continue cooperating with prosecutors saying he didn’t
hit her and eventually left the country, returned to Mexico and refused to testify. Thus charges were dropped. But because the allegations were already out and court proceedings started, Osuna was suspended. I’d have to go and double check that, but thats how i remember it playing out. I’m by no means defending him here, but we dont know the facts. MLB talking heads likely have more info then the general public.
Joe Carters walkoff
But i suppose Mlb wouldn’t have suspended him if their own investigation hadnt led them to the conclusion of he was guilty. Or they could of faced a defamation of character lawsuit and mlbpa would of likely backed osuna. Seen as none of that transpired he was likely guilty and the girlfriend had just changed her mind and bolted. He did take a plea which was to get counseling and a restraining order. Forgot all those details

PIONEER 8
Okay, whoever gets Payamps is going to the World Series.Mata is done for the season.Osuna…? This is a tough one because he’s coming off a surgery and a trial by fire with the people. However,I’m going to speak as if I was a GM.I wouldn’t want Roberto Osuna on my team. Not because I don’t like him or have anything against him?I like him as a player,he’s a good picther.I’m not here to forgive him,I don’t have to,but I’m not here to condemn him either,I don’t have to.People already have him ready to be hung.So I’ll leave it up to the professionals to judge him.You know, the people that are better than everybody else.I wouldn’t want him on my team because he’d be a total distraction because of his past actions. His past actions could/would tarnish the image of my team. His presence on the team could hurt ticket sales?.His presence could alienate the fanbase. It could upset the balance of chemistry on my team and I wouldn’t want his injury or any complications from it,to recur on my watch. His roster spot on the team takes away from a player with less baggage that could fill in his place. It also stops the development of one of the younger pitchers. You don’t want to look guilty of sending the wrong message? You know, giving a player $$Millions$$ after having done something like that? That makes it looks like you could be rewarded for domestic violence, sexual abuse and child abuse. You don’t want his plight to be a harmful influence on the younger players. You wouldn’t want his actions to disgrace the team’s Legacy or become synonymous with the team.If he was already on my team?,I’d try to trade him off my team as quick as possible. He’d probably have to be cut. He’s going to have a devil of a time trying to remove that dark cloud from over his head?I wish him good luck on that one.He lives in an unforgiving world.Everywhere he goes and no matter what he does?,people are going to know him and remember him for those past actions. He could go on to become a saint but people will remember what he did for as long as he lives. He gets to carry that with him to his grave. As a GM I wouldn’t want to pay for his struggles with that.He got that.I would take my chances on other players within my system or another player from a trade than to go through what could be potentially very difficult and trying times.I wouldn’t want his fate to become the fate of my team. You have to think about and be fair to everybody else within your organization.

Regarding Osuna, it is important to know that is he a product of a Mexican gang and continues to live in that lifestyle. His talent when right is awesome. Extreme buyer beware.

Google Tor star mar 2018 Osuna. They were nice about their article. The truth is the Bluejays asked Osuna to move from Mexico to Florida during the off-seasons to get him away from the influence and poor choices. Osuna refused.

Rsox
Who would have thought the most in demand pitcher of the offseason would be Joel Payamps
PiratesFan1981
I wouldn’t be disappointed if Pirates gave this Osuna a minor league pact with a invitation to ST. Test his arm a bit to see if that arm can hold up on a “mini scale” sample of spring training. If he has issues by the time the season starts, he can sit on a minor league IR and advise him a TJ is needed. It’s a risk move, but Pirates don’t have a lot of options to setup or close games. He can come in for a inning or so before the Pirates do another “fire sale”. I can see 3 arms in the pen being dealt in July
Rsox
How many save opportunities will the Pirates realistically have?
its_happening
At least 40.
PiratesFan1981
After the starter is knocked out, who knows? Maybe 30+
BeanTownsBest38
I think Osuna gets a 1 yr $6-$8Mil deal with incentives making it worth up to $10 mil, & deferred money, all provided team doctors agree with medical assessment. Good kid, great arm. Yes, had issues in the past, but, let’s hope that’s all behind him. Besides, He’s only 26!!! Worth the risk! If he Pitches well , you have a blue chip at the deadline.
PIONEER 8
Well spoken I like that.I hope that whatever team gives him a chance that their risk pays off and that he becomes a better person and something like that doesn’t happen to him again.I hope he never lets himself get in that situation again or does anything like that.If that risk doesn’t pay off you could have a dead (female) chip with a blue (flat) line.
90shair
You’re sweet—either you’re 100 or 10. A man who punches a woman in the face until she’s unrecognizable is not going to “become a better person.” A man who beats a woman’s face beyond recognition isn’t something that “happened to him.” Any team that hired his puts every woman in that city at risk for being brutalized, battered, and beaten. Any commentary to the contrary means you’ve got that woman beating desire in you.
jimmertee
Another great trade by Atkins yet finds it way into the dumpster. Aaron Loup for Jacob Waguespack. Anyone remember that one? That turns into Joel Payamps. Let’s see how this goes,
Oh man the Jays professional scouting needs to improve.
Ducey
Waguespack was about all anyone would get for 4 innings of Aaron Loup.
Except you jimmer. You’re the best GM EVER
jdgoat
I simply would have traded Aaron Loup for Mackenzie Gore
its_happening
Sorry Jimmer, have to disagree here. First, Loup wasn’t garnering a big return. Although I would have rather dealt him for some 18 year old project but beggars can’t be choosers when it came to Loup at that point.
Scouting is better than it has been in 20 years. Proof is in the system and the growth we have seen the last 5 years. I’m all for questioning the game plan over free agency and trades, but scouting is better. Not the best but better than AA and Ricciardi without a doubt.
jimmertee
Guests, I would agree that amateur scouting is pretty good nowadays but professional scouting is a black hole.
