Reds Release Noe Ramirez

By Anthony Franco | March 28, 2021 at 4:30pm CDT

4:30 PM: The Angels have an agreement in place to sign Ramirez, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). It is not expected to be a Major League deal, adds the Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya (via Twitter).

1:14 PM: Ramirez and the Angels are in talks, and a source tells FanSided’s Robert Murray that a reunion seems “highly likely” between the two sides.

MARCH 27: The Reds have released reliever Noé Ramirez. C. Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic (Twitter link) reported the move shortly before the team’s official announcement. The move drops Cincinnati’s 40-man roster count to 39.

Ramirez came over from the Angels in this offseason’s Raisel Iglesias trade. It was apparent at the time that move was motivated by a desire to shed Iglesias’ $9.125MM salary; releasing Ramirez only reinforces that. Cincinnati did also acquire infield prospect Leo Rivas as a player to be named later in the deal.

It was a difficult spring for Ramirez, who allowed eleven runs (six earned) in six innings with four strikeouts and walks apiece. Before that rough showing in exhibition play, Ramirez looked to have settled in as a competent if unexciting middle reliever. He tossed a 3.00 ERA/5.21 SIERA with poor strikeout and walk rates (16.5% and 10.6%, respectively) over 21 innings for Los Angeles last year.

Ramirez and the Reds agreed to a $1.175MM salary to avoid arbitration over the winter. Unlike most MLB deals, arbitration contracts usually aren’t fully guaranteed. Players released in the second half Spring Training typically receive 45 days termination pay at their prorated salary, around $282K in Ramirez’s case. Assuming he clears release waivers, Ramirez will be free to sign with any other team.

Angel fans will soon be very disappointed in Iglesias. Most hittable and overrated reliever I’ve seen.

If he’s so hittable, why does he have an ERA under 3 and WHIP under 1.2 in 4 of his last 5 seasons?

Way too many blown saves via the longball, I’m glad he’s gone…and God forbid he may be called upon to pitch both the 8th and ninth…

Well if he’s safe because of the long ball, then he’s pretty safe in Anaheim.

Softer ball, different park. If it’s just the long ball, iglesias will be fine.

Reds have had a more pathetic off-season than the Pirates. Gave away 2 quality RP for nothing. At least the Pirates don’t release the players they get via trade before even playing a game for them.

The Reds will be ridiculed for this but fans of other teams who haven’t consistently watched the Reds think a lot higher of Rasiel Iglesias than they should. Angels fans will be disappointed in his 9th inning ability sooner than later. Salary dumping him for nothing was a win by the Reds. They’ve made a lot of bad moves this off-season but getting rid of Iglesias wasn’t one of them.

Did you see what the Angels put out in the 9th inning last year? I am sorry, but he is an upgrade even if he blows 10 saves.

Dumping salary to allow your team to improve only really matters if there is a salary cap. All that dumping Iglesias means is that the owners got to pocket 9 million more and disengage many of their fans.

Was it your money? The Reds said they were reallocation money for a supposed shortstop. Typical lie by the Reds. They had no intention on using Inglesias and Bradley’s money on anyone

Doubtful there are 8 or 9 bullpen arms in Cincy better than Ramirez. The only explanation is Ramirez told the Reds he’s not a third baseman.

Arms are one thing. Getting people out is another.

In Anaheim, there is one bullpen guy better at getting people out than Noe. That says a lot about the Angels bullpen.

I definitely think it’s time to at least start listening to offers for Luis Castillo. What would Cincinnati have to lose at this point? Their not winning anything in 2021. It might be worth their while.

Why would you say that the Reds aren’t winning anything in 2021? The division is very winnable. A World Series seems like a pie in the sky goal, but not a division championship.

Unless MLB allows them to field fewer than 26 players, they’ll have to pay his replacement at least league minimum. On top of the $282K they owe Ramirez they’ll be saving a whole lot less than $1M.

Boston or Seattle. One of those two teams for sure. Noe can only be effective in low pressure situations. Which means he will be the closer in Boston or Seattle.

I hope so but my guess is that Krall is the puppet for Castellini. I’m sure they went all in for 2020 and it didn’t work as planned they decided to just cut payroll and that would have happened no matter who is the GM.

Personally Never really liked iglesis, was overpaid and Garret, SIms Antone are all better pichers. The reds could win the division so they shouldn’t tear, down but I would rather see a winning season that another rebuild WITH no Star player (Joey Votto), the rebuild did nothing LOOOOOOOOK Bruce, Cueto, Chapman traded for bats and balls and the leake for duvall was good and sims for him was good, but overall they traded all their players built a farm and they screwed it up…. WHY THE HECK DID THEY TRADE JETER DOWNS for KEMP BROKE HIS LIFE, Puig ok, but not worth it, Alex wood nothing, THEY TRADED A TOP 100 prospect for NOTHING. THEY HAD THE CHANCE FOR 1.b Votto, 2b India 3b Surez ss Downs Lf Winker CF Ak

Also may be a factor of familiarity. For those that don’t know, Cal St. Fullerton and Anaheim Stadium are about a 15 minute freeway drive from each other and share the same coastal weather patterns and ironically face the same exact direction. At the very least it may explain his impressive SoCal home numbers.
