Latest On Zac Gallen

By Mark Polishuk | March 23, 2021 at 7:25pm CDT

MARCH 23: Gallen has a “hairline stress fracture of his right lateral forearm at the radial end,” Zach Buchanan of The Athletic tweets. Gallen can keep playing catch at a low-stress level, but there’s no timeline for his return.

MARCH 22: Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen was scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start today due to right lateral forearm soreness, manager Torey Lovullo told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert (Twitter links) and other media.

Gallen is still being evaluated, and he has been receiving treatment on the problem for the last 10 days.  This would seem to indicate that Gallen has been dealing with the injury through at least one of his last two spring outings, though it hasn’t seemed to impact his results — the righty has a 2.13 ERA through four games and 12 2/3 innings during Spring Training.

Somewhat unusually, Gallen’s problem emerged while swinging a bat rather than throwing.  He told Gilbert and other reporters that his forearm began to feel sore after he was jammed with a pitch while taking swings in a batting cage.  (Should Gallen’s injury prove to be serious, he could quite possibly become the face of the dispute over the universal DH not being re-implemented for the 2021 season.)  In terms of pitching, Gallen said he was able to throw most of his pitches without issue, only feeling soreness when throwing a curveball.

Needless to say, the D’Backs will be as cautious as possible in monitoring any sort of forearm problem for a pitcher who looks to be the burgeoning ace of the rotation.  Gallen has been very impressive over 152 career MLB innings with the Marlins and Diamondbacks, posting a 2.78 ERA/408 SIERA and an above-average 28.5K%.  Gallen had some control issues in his 2019 rookie season but reduced his walk rate from 10.8% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2020.

Yeah, ohtani should never swing at another pitch in his entire career. Everyone knows that these guys who pitch have COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN how to swing a baseball bat. They hit in their youth (Little League/Hot Stove), they hit in high school, many have hit in college. All of a sudden they just forget how to hit. A catcher should never bat, he’s to valuable as a pitch framer to take a chance on getting injured batting or he might get hit in the hand & won’t be able to throw the ball back to the pitcher. There’s 9 positions on the baseball diamond. Every position plays defense AND every position SHOULD play offense. If you want to add a 10th position to be a hitter only, fine.

Minor league pitchers pitch once every five days if they are lucky. Minor league hitters hit 4 to 5 times a day. An average minor leaguer gets about 1,500 ABs. So, you expect a pitcher to go up against the best pitching in the World with 300 ABs under their belt?

Batting .285 in your first 700 at-bats is pretty good for someone who should never swing at another pitch again.

You bring up Ohtani??? The Angel’s ace that has pitched less than 60 innings total in 3 seasons due to injuries. Who is way more valuable as a starting pitcher to the Angels than a position player or DH. The last thing he needs is another injury regardless if its pitching, hitting, running the bases, or fielding.

The other thing that I keep thinking about with Hamels is that he’s got about $200M in career earnings. Before it got prorated last year that was an $18M deal, so he might not be interested in anything small.

If he’s getting offers/interest in terms of like a minor league deal with an invite to spring training or something where they aren’t guaranteeing him a roster spot/earnings then maybe he’s just not interested in that after how well he’s done for himself over his career.

Cole doesnt need to pitch anymore and that’s probably why he’s still a free agent. He lives on the water in SoCal and has property on the east coast as well. Beautiful wife and family. He’s accomplished a lot in his career and he owns a ring. Might be in the 95th or so percentile in worst run support since his rookie year in ’08, should have at least 25 more wins. Anyway I think he’s going to retire.

I’d argue Lorenzen should be the face of pitchers hitting more than ohtani but whatever

Lorenzen has been a 2 way player since he was a kid. Played CF+ closed in college. He clearly had a training regime down that worked for both, and it’s transitioned well to the majors. Ohtani seems to need to tweak his plan further

And at the end of the day. If a team really thinks they have one pitcher who can outhit their DH, they can have their pitcher hit and forfeit the DH. But for 1/100,000 guys who ACTUALLY hit and pitch at a true MLB level, sure seems smarter to protect the masses. A pitcher throwing a pitch is in infinitely more valuable than he is with a bat. Why waste their training time on a useless part of their craft, when they will never be compensated for being a slightly better than horrible hitter? They have a finite amount of training time. Time wasted hitting or weight lifting specifically for hitting is time lost forever. Meanwhile They sure as heck will be if they can add a few hundred RPM to their FB. It’s not a hard decision

Why? They get hurt doing everything. The cubs had a pitcher get hurt putting his pants on, the giants had one get hurt riding a dirt bike. The injury rates for A.L and N.L pitchers have been pretty much the same since the A.L. went with the DH in 72. If you favor the DH that’s one thing but using injury as your basis is fraudulent and easily refuted.

a fitting rebuttal for a hackneyed argument. anything that happens is an excuse for the DH. the OP’s comment implys its some univerally held belief that there should be a DH when in reality its pretty obvious that’s not the case.

        • Srechter35

Think op’s comment simply used this example of a pitcher hurting himself while batting as evidence that perhaps pitchers shouldn’t be doing something they don’t train for. The notion that he implies it’s a “universally held belief” is absent from his post, and seems more like emotional projection on your part. I’m all for a spirited discussion on the issue, of course. But “nope” is silly, pointless, meritless, and a waste of time response.

There’s no way you can say it’s obvious it’s not the case. The only leaks we’ve heard is both sides DO want the DH, but they are more concerned about how conceding it now would impact CBA negotiations and their respective leverage. really, his opinion is based on everything that’s been reported. Pretending it’s obvious some side hates the dh is just ignoring the leaks that have come out

These guys are athletes. They know how to play their defensive positions AND they know how to hit. They’ve done it for years, until they became professionals. Then the teams hypnotized (brainwashed) them w the notion: You’re a PITCHER, from now on you’ll forget how to swing a bat. The more you practice, the better you get. Simple concept. If any athlete stops practicing their routine their performance will regress. This goes for everyday life as well.

        • Jerem

The problem isn’t that they don’t know how to hit the problem is that they’re horrendously bad at it. I understand wanting to not change the game you love. There’s certain rules I’m a bit iffy onas well. But Saying “oh they’re athletes they they just need to practice” makes it seem like it’s super easy to be a good hitter. Being a pitcher is hard enough, with such a short shelf life that it just isn’t worth the risk, not when guys are all throwing 98 with wicked sliders. You can’t take Mike trout and say hey bro go be a pitcher and throw 98 with a slider. So why expect pitchers to be able to do the same?

for me it is more that having it in the NL with the roster expansion felt fine, I didn’t actually miss the strategy aspect as much as I have always been against the DH. I mean given the opportunity I would probably rather both leagues have an additional place in the order for a dh AND the pitcher has to bat – or that you are required to burn a bench piece during a pitching change in late innings in order to keep some of the strategy but – yo know most people would rather just have a DH and I am fine with that

I don’t think the DH fiasco will be completley solved until CBA Negotiations next off season. I think it’ll be better for the game long term with the DH in both leagues. Not only will it lead to less hitting related injuries to pitchers (although they are infrequent), it’ll add more action to the game and make pitching more fun to watch, imo. Since 1970, pitchers have had a positive wRC+ 9 times, maxing out at 15 in 1974 and the rest of the positives being in the single digits. Plus, to me, I’d rather see a pitcher who is dealing to keep dealing rather than to be pulled because his spot comes up in the order soon.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that the N.L. went back to having no DH. It was all because the owners and players couldn’t be adults and work things out amicably. They used the universal DH as a bargaining chip, didn’t that work out terrifically… It makes no sense, especially if they’re still planning on implementing it in 2022 as rumored.

If you like the DH, you have a whole league to watch and root for. Leave the NL alone. If pitchers don’t want to hit or have weak constitutions, let them only play for the AL. Where’s MadBum? I couldn’t stand him when he played for the Giants, but we NEED him now and he can talk some sense into Zac about how real pitchers swing the bat and hit for themselves.

MLB should do what’s right and let both leagues use the DH without getting something in return. But, they probably won’t.

But keep those pitchers hitting because, you know, tradition and whatnot.

I agree, was curious what others thought. Chisholm still seems to have a pretty high ceiling, but also a pretty low floor. I was surprised the Marlins didn’t take more time to see what they had in Gallen. If they still had him in addition to their current rotation, they may be a legitimate playoff contender.

True, but Jeter and Co. made some stellar moves, getting Alcantara for example, getting rid of Stanton’s contract, getting Marte for little.

MLB fans when gas stations went from full service to self-service: Im never fueling up my car again! Why change this, kill it, burn it with fire. Sound like a bunch of old men moaning and crying because change scares you. The universal DH imo made things more interesting last season and needs to be implemented.

It should have been done years ago. How is having one league with a DH and the other league without one fair in any way? It gives NL pitchers a much greater chance of getting injured, and makes it so that N.L. teams can’t carry a legitimate DH on their rosters (you don’t sign Nelson Cruz to bat once per game). It gives the A.L. a clear advantage and always has.

100% wrong. its a matter of team composition. AL teams benefit from being able to roster defensively limited players, but if playing in a NL park they dont have that luxury. and well built NL teams dont need a Stanton-type when they can develop a good hitting reserve to fill the DH spot in AL parks.

When baseball thinks “nl should have a dh so pitchers don’t hit.” So a pitcher because a liability to hit but stays loose even more then sitting on the bench. But a dh in American League saves his body but he’s a defensive liability or can’t stay healthy but he’s a great bat only player. I mean these are the causes and effects when you do this. What’s going to happen next baseball becomes football? Put the defensive type players on the field then switch them with the offensive minded players if you can do both then you can do it. It’s sounds unrealistic but it’s sounds something the down the line baseball may become if this still becomes a joke.

Just another reason Manfred, Tony Clark and MLB has become a joke. They can’t decide on a DH or not and then someone who shouldn’t be hitting gets hurt hitting. Nice job CLOWNS. I am officially done with the sport.
