A’s Acquire Skye Bolt

By Steve Adams | May 5, 2021 at 12:52pm CDT

The Athletics announced Wednesday that they’ve acquired outfielder Skye Bolt from the Giants in exchange for cash. Bolt is a former A’s draft pick who spent his entire career with the organization until being designated for assignment back on April 1 and subsequently claimed by the Giants. His time on the other side of the Bay lasted only a month, as he was designated for assignment by the Giants as well last week. He’ll now come full circle back to his original organization, where he’s been assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old Bolt only appeared in two games with the Giants and struck out in his lone plate appearance with the team. He’s played in seven big league games dating back to 2019 but tallied only a dozen trips to the plate, going 1-for-11 with a walk and four punchouts.

Bolt spent the 2020 season in the Athletics’ 60-man player pool but never got the call from their alternate site to the big leagues. His last full season came in 2019 when he appeared in 89 games with Las Vegas, slashing .269/.350/.459 in 347 plate appearances. The 2015 fourth-rounder has never been considered one of the organization’s very top prospects, but his ability to play all three outfield spots and a knack for drawing walks (10.8 percent in the minors) has landed him in the middle tier of some A’s Top 30 lists. Overall, Bolt is a career .249/.335/.426 hitter in parts of five minor league seasons.

Nothing about Drew Robinson making it to the minor league roster after his suicide attempt last year? He only has one eye.

That’s just as important, if not a better story, than little Skye Bolt getting traded. I still don’t see an article. Tim, what’s the delay?

That’s not a trade rumor or anything to do with what this site reports on. There’s tons of baseball news websites, this is a website for a specific topic: MLB TRADE RUMORS

As evidenced by the 27 injury posts we get every day? I don’t consider those to be “rumors”.

          It’s news and it’s a great story.

I could really go the rest of my life without having to see the A’s re-acquire a terrible player they got rid of, only to see him continue to be terrible for Oakland, before he inevitably flames out. Adam Rosales exposed just how scattered the front office, and started their absurd re-acquiring player fetish.

Yasiel Puig and Shane Greene are still FAs, stop this nonsense of trying to make bad players good, when there’s good players out there.

he’s the last guy on the 40 and easily expendable. Why the need to complain?

Because the A’s have real problem areas (SS) and need to be making moves to fix that, not getting OF depth when there’s even better players out there. Bolt is a no-tool player. That’s why I complain. Even Ka’ai Tom has a higher ceiling.

I mean it’s not like any FO is sacrificing any proper time to sign free agents or make real trades by claiming guys off waivers. I would imagine the GM can get someone else to do the paperwork for him.

        • A'sfaninUK

My point is Bolt shouldnt even be the last guy on the 40 man. He’s not even good enough for that, plus the A’s already have better internal OF options that they are blocking with Bolt now. Maddening.

        • mlb1225

No one said that Bolt is going to stay around on the 40-man for the entire season. He might end up getting DFA’d by the A’s later this year again.

        • Asfan0780

Who are these options? They dfa Tom, fowler previously Seth brown is you’re fill in guy. Th outfield depth in upper minors isn’t ready like barerra, deichmann. Shortstop is a big issue but they’re stuck with a bad contract in andrus. Unless he gets injured or continues being lousy. They may bring in a mid-season depth type but doubt much more

Even if they don’t have that clause, chances are they won’t be showing up for their Mexican League games. They’ll carry very little about what money is owed to them in the Mexican league.

Bolt has played 7 games in 3 years. I doubt the A’s are bringing him in to play the OF regularly. You seemed overly worked up about a 5th/6th string outfielder.

Spoken as if you’ve never followed the A’s before. Listen: the A’s love peppering in terrible players onto their playoff-bound teams, who inevitably end up playing too much and causing early exits. Tony Kemp is not a MLB-level player, its a joke he gets run out there every day. Andrus can’t hit anymore, he’s toast as anything but a late inning defense and pinch runner. Instead the A’s are about to lose crucial games by trying to make terrible players play good, when they literally never will for them.

Still, he’s played 7 games between 2019 and 2021. The A’s were playoff bound in 2019 and 2020 and he appeared in less than .03% of all their games between the two seasons. I do agree that Andrus is well past his prime and struggles to hit anymore, but at the very least, Kemp has a .370 OBP with the A’s. Not saying he deserves regular playing time or anything, but you could do a lot worse for a utility guy.

        • zacharydmanprin

Kemp has a .383 OBP this season and doesn’t cost the A’s on defense. If Chad Pinder was not injured this wouldn’t be an issue.

And I’m anticipating a trade soon from Zaidi now with La Stella and Solano on the IL. Potentially a reunion with Matt Duffy in Chicago, who can play all over the infield and can fill in at LF. Cubs might be interested in SP depth, maybe a guy like Tropeano who showed filth in SP. Giants might call him up and audition him for a trade similarly to Wandy Peralta.
