Padres Activate Dinelson Lamet

By Connor Byrne | May 4, 2021 at 5:20pm CDT

5:20pm: San Diego announced that it has optioned righty Miguel Diaz to its alternate site to clear room for Lamet.

4:39pm: The Padres have activated right-hander Dinelson Lamet from the 10-day injured list, per a team announcement. He’ll start their game against the Pirates on Tuesday.

This will be the first start since April 21 for Lamet, who was making his season debut then. Lamet exited that appearance after just two innings with forearm tightness, leading to fears that he would require a second Tommy John surgery. Fortunately for him and the Padres, he was able to quickly work his way back from the injury.

The past several months have been difficult from a health standpoint for Lamet, whose 2020 season came to an end in late September when he suffered a UCL strain. Before that, Lamet enjoyed a breakout year with 69 innings of 2.09 ERA pitching and a 34.8 percent strikeout rate against a 7.5 percent walk rate. That stellar performance led to a fourth-place finish in National League Cy Young balloting.

Even with almost no contributions from Lamet this year, the Padres have begun a solid 17-13 – one game back of the NL West-leading Giants. San Diego’s starters have put up a stingy 2.81 ERA through the team’s first 30 games.

Ta da da da (say it fast) Metsfan. To be clear, this post is in reference to Hudson6’s research on the ERA not the lame reference of 99 suggesting an injury is a good thing – which it never is regardless of team. Posts that in any way combine humor and injury are not welcome.

Calling it now. Just like Christian Yelich coming off the DL for one day until his “sore back” put him back on the DL, little Dinny Lamet will probably be injured again soon as well. Not rooting for it, but the Padres and their swag-obsession is resulting in players getting injured too often and too fast this year.

The same “swag” that has caused the Padre’s injuries is so powerful, that it has spread northward causing all the Dodgers and Giants injuries as well. It’s potent magic, that Padre swag.

So seeing if Lamet can pitch through this is “swag obsession”? If his elbow blows out, then he needs a 2nd TJ. If it doesn’t, then they have a very good starting option. No sense in forcing him to have a 2nd TJ, unless you know he needs it.

Yes, nobody on this Team of Youth will get any chicks or any new followers on Instagram, Twitch, or their little Tik Toks if they’re on the injured list.

Out of sight, out of mind. Players care about their BRAND more than having an actual career today, and once they sign that first huge contract, it’s smooth sailing and lack of effort from here on out.

Dinny Lamet knows that if he ends up injured, he’s not on TV and he’s not being seen.

UCL is a ligament. No amount of rest would heal it. If the ligament is already damaged it will not heal without surgery, so it really is not a matter of TJ being forced by them starting him.

I still don’t understand why they are trying to run him out there in May. He clearly is going to have massive innings limitations this year. Let him sit out until July.

It feels like a lot of these teams are going to runout of pitchers way before 162

Speaking of Tatis Jr., they might have to coax James Shields out of retirement come June or July to eat some innings, and I’m only half kidding.

I get your point. I wonder if they get him back out there to see if it does occur again…if you wait a few months, throw him out there and he needs TJ, he is out two full years. Or maybe he would be anyway, I don’t know. But the writer of this article needs to slow down with the claim that he was “quickly able to work back from his inury”…truth is, all Pads fans will be holding their breath when he pitches. He is not all the way back just yet, even if he does get into a game. Let’s just see how he reacts first.

Pirates’ bats have been quiet for a few days and are capable of much better as we saw in their home series against the Padres last month.

This could turn out really bad for Lamet.

At this point, Lamet either needs to pitch or realize that he can’t and do whatever doctors recommend – let’s find out and fingers crossed. As for tonight, could we see Lamet for 3 followed by Weathers for 3? They seem linked together this past week and are on same schedule and neither would be needed for 5 or more days based on schedule / rest days. One of them takes the spot next turn if both healthy, the other to the pen (Weathers likely). If only 1 healthy after tonight then that one stays in rotation.

Agree about Lamet. It’s go time now, do or die. And healthy or not, Weathers is on a 100 innings limit for 2021. They won’t keep him in the rotation for much longer.

Would love Lamet to help us win 10-12 games and then go to pen, Gore takes his spot after AS break and takes to end of season. This – looking at you 99 – is why Lamet is needed now – wins count in May just like they do in Sept. only now, we don’t have other options as good as Lamet ready to go. This saves Weathers in case he has to come back to rotation in Sept. should Gore falter.

Have you seen Lamet pitch lately? I can count all the sliders he has thrown in 2021 on one hand. He is a shell of himself. Clearly he (or the team) are not comfortable with him throwing breaking pitches. If he isn’t physically able that’s fine, but let’s not act like he is going to go win you a bunch of games in his current state.

Snell, Darvish & Musgrove are rolling right along, Paddack can eat innings and Weathers is good for some starts. That’s about as solid of a rotation plan as you’ll find in 2021. The Padres don’t need to lean on Lamet at all until he is absolutely ready.

He’s been pitching at the alternate site, doing bullpens and he pitched during spring training. There are plenty of reports every time he throws, and when he throws sliders it’s mentioned. Keeping up with that along with actually watching every one of his outings is enough to know this guy is not going out and winning you 10-12 games right now.

You asked if I had “seen him pitch lately” like my failure to see him pitch was causing me to have no idea what I was talking about. So my point here is that you have not “seen him pitch lately” either but you read reports.

In case you haven’t heard, Weathers is on an inning limit in 2021 and won’t be starting many more games unless in emergency. So they do need Lamet, without him they will find 5th starter, either off the farm in in trades/FA, but it won’t be Weathers.

They may lose the game (down 2-1) but the game was a success as both Weathers and Lamet (and Kela too) pitched without issue. Now if only they can figure out how to swing a bat…

I’m more inclined to think they are trying him here specifically because it’s the Pirates. Just like they used Miguel Diaz last night.

Nothing against the Pirates, but a home game vs. the Buccos is a pretty soft landing spot.

        That’s a fair point.

Mine was that even though it’s the Pirates – they’re not as bad as most people think and are due a breakout offensively.

Conversely, the Bucs’ pitching is playing up somewhat, and will likely get much, much worse as they trade players away throughout this season,
