Pirates Place Gregory Polanco On IL, Select Hunter Owen

By Connor Byrne | May 4, 2021 at 6:53pm CDT

The Pirates have placed outfielder Gregory Polanco on the injured list and selected outfielder/infielder Hunter Owen, the team announced. The club didn’t give a reason for Polanco’s IL placement.

Polanco entered this season hoping to bounce back from two straight unproductive years, but it hasn’t happened yet. Dating back to 2019, Polanco has batted an unsightly .197/.263/.369 over 431 trips to the plate, including 90 PA of .200/.289/.350 hitting this season. Phillip Evans could handle most of the work in right field during Polanco’s absence.

This is the first big league promotion for Owen, a 25th-round pick in 2016 who worked his way to the Triple-A level in 2019. Owen struggled during his debut there, but he has performed well in the minors overall. The 27-year-old owns a .266/.341/.473 line with 55 home runs in 1,425 PA.

How can you call the vaccine a cure for a hoax when Trump wants credit for the vaccine? That doesn’t sound like conflicting reasoning to you?

People believe its a hoax because when it first hit someone predicted 2 million people would die.

          Low and behold
Govenors put covid patients in nursing homes, mass genocide of the elderly
Social distancing and mask mandates weren’t enforced during 2020 protests and riots, covid spread nobody cared
Entertainment industry was called “essentual” business
Closing small businesses only funneled everyone into big box stores spreading covid more
Making rules like take mask off in public when sitting down wasn’t scientific
Politicians routinely violated their own mandates

For something that was billed as the next ebola outbreak, recommendations and mandates actually increased covid cases

@I beg to differ. Can you answer my question if you believe the pandemic was a hoax? Why did Trump insist on credit for the vaccine if Covid was a hoax? For Retrumplicans, this should be a question that needs an answer. If Trump believes in the vaccine than shouldn’t his followers also?

I dont believe it was a hoax.

          Covid is real.

The seriousness or deadliness of covid. That’s debatable. Depends who you ask. People 55+ have different answers and experiences than 18-40. Many factors weigh in like overall health and such.

A 74 year old man getting a vaccine doesn’t mean an 18 19 20 year old in good health must get the vaccine. Its up to the individual if they want to or not. Just like flu season.

@I beg to differ. Okay. If covid is no more concerning than the flu, my question actually still stands. It just has to be stated a little differently. We put out flu vaccines every year. No President demands credit for flu vaccines. Are you saying Trump demanded credit for a vaccine that was no worse than the flu? His Operation Warp Speed and then his demand for credit of the vaccine (even after his election loss) it created seems like he was taking it more serious than just another flu.

        • I Beg To Differ

No president demands credit because the flu vaccine originated in 1912 and research expanded in the 1930s with the first testers being the military in the 1940s.

          Also

After passage of the 1938 Act, the FDA began to designate certain drugs as safe for use only under the supervision of a medical professional, and the category of “prescription-only” drugs was securely codified into law by the 1951

So the flu vaccine development wasn’t government funded and didn’t have government regulations in the way like a covid vaccine did.

Not sure why you’re trying to compare the vaccines.

Far as why is trump taking credit?

I’d take credit too if msm told people it’d be years, at best early to mid 2021 before a vaccine was ready.

Just to clarify by government funded I mean trump prepaid for vaccines for the public. 100 million doses or something to that effect. I’d have to look up the total number of vaccines he paid for.

The military in the 40s paid to develop flu vaccines for the military during WW2.

I read your statement as though you are answering a different question because it doesn’t sound like you are answering mine. Why should Trump demand credit for a vaccine to a virus no more dangerous than the common flu? Obama, Clinton, Bush and Reagan never did? Why after the 2020 election would he continue too? It’s just a flu, right?

          Why should trump demand credit
          1. Paid for vaccines for the public
          2. Cut regulations to get vaccines out to the public faster than the media was telling people they’d be ready for public use.

I dont remember Obama, Clinton, Bush funding experimental flu vaccines for public use or cutting red tape to get treatment to people faster.

You seem caught up on this covid = flu idea

I never claimed covid = flu.

I did say people should have a right to decide if they want a covid vaccine. Just like they’ve had the right to get a flu vaccine every year before covid. Right to choose.

So not sure why you’re trying to imply I said covid = flu.

I also said covid affects different people, different ages, different health statuses differently.

1: the reason is because the MLB has set so many great guidelines for players and teams to follow to ensure that no one actually gets COVID.
      2. your spacing in the quotes is wrong (just would like to comment on that not being a grammar Nazi)
      3. the vaccine has rough side affects but its better than the disease which sidelined one of the strongest people I know for at least a week after a positive test.

      Row-no it’s not.
The Pirates are hurting for outfielders so much that they are promoting a 19 year old relief pitcher who weighs 225 pounds to play centerfield. They purchased him from Vanderbilt.
He probably won’t work out well, but they figure that he cannot be any worse than the ones that they have already tried.
Evidently centerfield is a sore spot for both Pennsylvania teams.

The really strange thing is that Polly has looked quite athletic so far this season. His bat seems to be coming around a bit after an awful start, while he’s running the bases like he did as a prospect.

Unfortunately, his throwing arm is totally gone after shoulder surgery, but please don’t tell that to the scouts while he’s still the Buccos preferred everyday RF!

If every opposing player knows his arm is toast and runs at will when the ball is hit to him then surely the scouts do. I’ve come to embrace the idea that Polanco is untradeable and as Pirates fans we just gotta ride out this last season with him then Nutting will buyout his option years.

If I was a betting man, I’d be rich. Before the season started, I said by May/June Polanco will be on the IL. This guy can never stay on the field and Pirates should cut ties with him. 5 years of this and it’s time to lick wounds and move on from Polanco in RF.

If it is a 60day DL then he probably wont’ see much time on the field in a Pirates uniform.

He would almost have to have a 10day and come back really strong.. in which case could be a trade candidate that would mostly be a salary dump.

Other wise he will get bought out at the end of the season.

Hunter’s numbers seem to tie directly into how many times he’s been HBP lol Could be coincidence just… cute

Pirates have a few decent outfield prospects that should be here ‘soon’ some getting some time in September probably, if not sooner

Pirates are cutting most veterans for the younger prospects. Polanco has no value and trading him will cost a Pirates a prospect as well. Releasing Polanco would be the smartest move they can make with him at this time. They shouldn’t have to wait for the “buy out” to move on from him. They still have other options for RF until a solidify prospect is ready. I am over Polanco being in Pittsburgh and like to see more of these young kids. O’Neil Cruz can switch off SS and move to RF. I feel that is more suitable for him anyways. They have other options if they continue to play Cruz at SS though.

Polanco’s contract doesn’t expire until after the 2023 season which, in his case, is a loooong time. No team will take him unless PIT eats most of his remaining salary, and even if they do the return will be light.

Tabata and Polanco were basically busts for the pay high but not ridiculously so philosophy of signing younger players.
Cutch and Marte were steals in some regards.
Tabata would be an all star on this team as he was a decent fielder with moderate speed but no power. He actually was otherwise a decent hitter.
In Polanco’s defense he was a decent player before late 2018.

Matt-If they had a replacement and needed the roster space I am not sure that the time to move on would not be now.
He was mediocre at best for three years, good for one,and very good for another before his fateful slide ruined his career.
I stand by my term of his decent play before that time.
