COVID Notes: 6/13/21

By Anthony Franco | June 13, 2021 at 12:35pm CDT

The latest on coronavirus situations around the league:

Latest Updates

  • Before this afternoon’s game against the Red Sox, the Blue Jays placed left-hander Steven Matz on the COVID-19 injured list, relays Scott Mitchell of TSN (Twitter link). Matz’s most recent test turned up an inconclusive result, leading to today’s IL placement, but the 30-year-old is not feeling any symptoms of the virus. He’ll undergo further testing. Reliever Jeremy Beasley has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take his active roster spot for now.

Earlier Notes

  • The Marlins are activating left-hander Trevor Rogers from the COVID-19 injured list, notes Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (Twitter link). Rogers went on the IL yesterday but was always expected back in short order. Preston Guilmet, who was selected to the roster in his place, has been removed from the 40-man roster. Because Guilmet was selected to replace a player going on the COVID IL, he needn’t be exposed to waivers. He’ll be sent back to Triple-A Jacksonville without having appeared in an MLB game.

Why? He’s not some young whippersnapper waiting for his shot. He’s an average AAA pitcher on his best day. The Marlins keep calling up trash bodies over actual deserving prospects.

Most of their deserving prospects are already injured. Besides, this situation, in which they kind of knew that Rogers wouldn’t be on the IL long, they would’ve been okay calling anyone up because it didn’t matter. They could’ve called their AAA popcorn vendor, and wouldn’t have mattered.

10 HR in 33 MLB innings doesn’t exactly scream that he deserves a longer look.

Seems a little shady that Matz gets an inconclusive test the day after pitching a gem. Now Toronto gets an extra pitcher for the remainder of the series.

Dorothy, if you can call Beasley a pitcher. lol.

But I see what you are saying.

The Jays relief pitching staff is burning out because the starters rarely go past 2 turns of the opponents batting order. 4.1 innings average per start to be precise. A team cannot win over 162 games doing that strategy. I called all this is spring training. It is going to get worse for the Jays unless they trade for 2 starters[one elite like Scherzer, another a healthy 3 and a shutdown closer). Then they might have a shot at winning this year.

      – So they jerk around the system to get as many lousy arms in and out of the 25 man roster as they can.

I bet you no team can win over 162 games in a season. Also roster size is 26.

Nobody arranges a conspiracy to fake test results and pays all the necessary bribes and risks a franchise-altering scandal for the pleasure of having Jeremy Beasley on their team for a few days.

The Jays bullpen isn’t overworked at all lately anyway, it’s just terrible.
