Mets To Sign Cesar Puello

By Anthony Franco | June 6, 2021 at 3:55pm CDT

The Mets are signing outfielder César Puello to a minor league contract, reports Tim Healey of Newsday (Twitter link). He’ll be assigned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Puello, 30, has appeared in the big leagues with four different teams across parts of three seasons. Altogether, he’s tallied 197 plate appearances at the highest level, compiling a useful .246/.354/.347 line while lining up at all three outfield positions. A one-time top prospect during his first stint in the Mets system (2008-15), Puello has spent significantly more time at the Triple-A level, where’s posted a .289/.391/.439 slash over parts of six seasons.

While Puello has generally been a productive minor league player, that hasn’t been the case so far in 2021. Signed to a minor league contract by the Red Sox over the winter, the right-handed hitter stumbled to a .158/.370/.184 mark over 54 plate appearances with Triple-A Worcester. The Sox released him earlier this week. Puello will now hook on with a Mets organization that is still without outfielders Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, Albert Almora Jr., Johneshwy Fargas and José Martínez due to injury.

Additionally, Cameron Maybin and Wilfredo Tovar have accepted their outright assignments and reported to Syracuse. The pair of veterans cleared waivers earlier this week but have foregone their respective rights to elect free agency.

More dumpster diving by Scott and Sandy. Why not spend resources to get real players.

Why not learn how baseball works. Even if they can pull of a trade (giving up valuable future pieces for a temporary fix) they’ll still need these type minor league depth pieces.

I didn’t realize Acuna or Soto were on the trade market. You’re right, how dare they get merely useful minor league depth! (Sarcasm alert)

At this time a year there is not much else available. Plus this is a injury plagued year for almost everyone.

Player availability is a parking lot with 30 dumpsters out behind the hospital which is currently full of injured players.

The Mets have said from the onset of the new year; they’re going to build up their farm system. This week, they got rid of a problematic Maxwell to SF and now they’re reacquiring a reliable Puello. Moves like these are expected, and have little or no impact on the parent team. Very soon, we’ll have Almora, Villar and Guillorme back from the IL. Not sure why some people here get so triggered over a minor league transaction, but whatever.

Bobbykidd2965 it’s because it’s the Mets. I don’t think there’s an MLB team that takes more heat than the Mets. Yes, granted, the Wilpon’s did nothing in recent years to brag on, but the trend of Mets bashing has been ages old thanks to consistently being in the shadow of that other MLB team. New owner, new players, same old rhetoric. Cohen bought the team, spent mad money on free agents, made smart acquisitions, then almost the entire starting roster went down simultaneously with injuries, and oh yea, even with fill-ins they are still solidly sitting atop the division. But even with “insert name here” manning the outfield and being surprisingly good, that’s not enough to stop the haters. I’m used to the banter, it’ll only make it sweeter when the Mets take the pennant.
