Braves Acquire Eddie Rosario

By Anthony Franco | July 30, 2021 at 12:12pm CDT

The Indians and Braves have announced a deal sending corner outfielder Eddie Rosario and cash considerations to Atlanta in exchange for corner infielder Pablo Sandoval. It’s the first of two outfield pickups on deadline day for the Braves, who reacquired Adam Duvall from Miami as well. Atlanta also picked up Joc Pederson earlier this month as part of an effort to rebuild the outfield in the wake of Ronald Acuña’s ACL tear.

Rosario is currently on the 10-day injured list with an intercostal strain but is expected to return at some point in the coming weeks. Signed to a one-year deal over the offseason, Rosario struggled over his time in Cleveland, hitting .254/.296/.389 with seven home runs in 306 plate appearances. He’d been a slightly to well above-average bat in each of his final four seasons with the Twins, however, and the Braves are clearly betting on a return to that form.

The acquisition cost is minimal. Sandoval has picked up sporadic playing time, serving mostly as a designated pinch-hitter. The 34-year-old is hitting .178/.302/.342 over 86 trips to the plate. He’s almost certainly being included as a salary offset, with about a third of his $1MM figure still to be paid.

For Cleveland, the appeal is in shedding an undisclosed amount of Rosario’s salary. The Indians will cover some of the deal, but Rosario’s $8MM contract still has a little less than $2.8MM to be paid out. The Braves will assume some of that tab to add a lefty bat to their outfield mix while the Indians save some money in a season where they’re no longer competing anyways.

Come on Cleveland Guardians at least acquire a prospect for Rosario. This signifies that they wanted to reduce their payroll.

The Braves were probably going to release him anyway and ask for more from Cleveland in cash. Same difference in the end financially, only Cleveland has Sandoval for a couple of months rather than a prospect who should be playing every day at AAA instead earning major league service time.

Obviously this move immediately makes the Braves better. But not exactly the splash we were hoping for. But hey, good move. Seems like the Braves had their eye on him all offseason and had to have him as a Braves. Nice move in conjunction with Duvall. The team is better and didn’t give up a prospect. Hard to complain

Franmil should not be playing in the outfield. That’s partly why he’s on an AL team to begin with, Defense is important.

This is really pathetic. They should just sell the team or move it altogether if they can’t afford such a relatively paltry difference (with cash exchange involved). They basically gave a talented player away for a big fat bag of potatoes and a couple dollars. What a way to run a franchise. I’d be disgusted if I was a fan of Cleveland. I’m disgusted myself at the economic realities of baseball. Look at the difference between the Dodgers and the Indians in the last 24 hours alone. What a complete joke this sport has become

Don’t mind the Braves upgrading the bench/outfield as Pablo hasn’t been hitting much, but his presence in the dugout is a HUGE LOSS for the Braves. It’ll hurt the Braves for a couple games without him there. Have to adjust not having someone they clearly went to for mentoring.
