COVID Notes: 7/31/21

By Mark Polishuk | July 31, 2021 at 4:47pm CDT

The latest on coronavirus situations from around baseball…

  • Marlins manager Don Mattingly has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced (MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola was among those to report the news).  Mattingly is experiencing some mild symptoms but has been vaccinated against the coronavirus.  Bench coach James Rowson will serve as acting manager while Mattingly is absent for the mandatory quarantine period.  Tests of other Marlins personnel revealed no other positive cases.
  • Brewers right-handers Hunter Strickland and Jake Cousins both tested positive for COVID-19, manager Craig Counsell told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Haudricourt (Twitter links) and other reporters.  Righty Jandel Gustave is also not available due to contact tracing.  No official moves have been made in regards to the COVID-related injured list or roster replacements, though newly-acquired relievers John Curtiss and Daniel Norris are both on hand and could be activated for tonight’s game.  Counsell said that Strickland and Cousins both reported mild symptoms, and both relievers have been vaccinated.

I don’t believe these athletes and coaches who claim to be vaccinated yet test positive. Sure, you can still get COVID even if you’re fully vaccinated, but according to the CDC it is rare. So when teams say stuff like 13 players have tested positive and 12 were vaccinated, don’t believe that crap.

If everyone got tested multiple times a week, more people would test positive because of the effectiveness of the vaccines. Vaccinated players don’t get tested unless they request one or show symptoms, but because there are very few, if any, fully vaccinated teams, covid will still find its way into clubhouses and generate positive tests.

It has nothing to do with not being vaccinated. They literally just admitted that fully vaccinated people spread the Delta variant.

This is why people shouldn’t think they know everything about a virus that has been known about for a little over a year.

Not sure where you have been sticking your head the past 6 months but anyone who bothered to educate themselves have known for months that vaccinated people can A- still get the virus B- still transmit the virus.

          Vaccines
1- Lessen by a factor of 3x+ your chance of getting infected
2- if infected lessen the risk of severe symptom or death by a factor of 10x+ depending on the vaccine.
3- Lessen the risk of spreading if infected by a factor of 2-5 depending on the Vaccine. ( Delta variant still being studied . ) Read my posts below for more information.

There’s a brand new study that came out of the Massachusetts Department of Health that is showing that breakthrough cases have been more common in their sample than what the CDC is suggesting. Though that same study confirmed that the rate of severe cases and hospitalization is dramatically less if you have been vaccinated.
Additionally, didn’t a bunch of Yankees get Johnson & Johnson and while it is still clinically effective against COVID-19 has been proven less effective than Pfizer and Moderna?

Viruses mutate, & everyone will catch the corona virus.

Not everyone will respond the same and most people’s immune system will fight of infection.
So you will continue you to see this.

Everyone should read up on this subject, I suggest Miller’s Review of 400 vaccine studies.

It’s actually not rare at all, and they just finally admitted it yesterday.

The vaccine doesn’t stop the spread of the variants. The only thing it possibly does is stop you from being hospitalized or dying if you get the Delta one, and even that isn’t true for everybody.

Exactly. Directly from the CDC report that was released yesterday:

“The CDC study found vaccinated individuals had a similar amount of virus presence as the unvaccinated, suggesting that, unlike with other variants, vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant could transmit the virus, the CDC said.”

Of the COVID positive people they tested, 77% were fully vaccinated. And a number of the fully vaccinated were hospitalized.

We are going to have to learn how to live with this & society is going to have to learn how to still function.

You fail to mention- The CDC internal document estimated that vaccines reduce the risk of severe disease or death 10-fold or greater, and they reduce the risk of infection three-fold.

If they reduce the risk of infection simple logic will tell you you they also reduce the spread.

No one ever said you can not get infected. For months now we all have known the efficacy was 94% -95% for the 2 best vaccines for the earlier variants and 88%-89% for Delta. ( Results from UK studies )

No leader or health department in the world claimed the vaccines were 100% effective .

Seriously you need to stop with the lies, and half truths.

“We are going to have to learn how to live with this…”

We didn’t have to learn to win with Ebola or Polio or Smallpox because back then people didn’t make being ignorant and stupid their badge of honor.

We will have to learn to live with Covid because now people have made being ignorant and stupid their badge of honor.

We did not HAVE to learn to live with Covid. It is the result of a choice by 30 % of people who have chosen ignorance and stupidity after being deluged by weapons grade disinformation and tribalism.

          But, this was not inevitable.

          @tolled –

My son plays high school sports so the vaccine was essentially compulsory for him. He’s 17 & coming into his own. Meaning he is not the biggest fan of being told what to do. But he acquiesced.

I was kind of on the fence. But we had an outbreak in the office with my sales guys & my partner & I became concerned about litigation of some type. Our lawyer did nothing to allay that. That tilted the table & I got it.

My girlfriend has not – nor will she – get it. She – however – is Ojibwe & Lakota. She has some pretty good reasons to distrust the government & I certainly get it.

Bottom line: the world has changed a great deal since 1955.

Pretty sure it was the Nationals but I think it was only 12 and that could have been coaches as well so not necessarily all players. Dave Martinez claimed though that only 1 of the 12 wasn’t vaccinated.

The vaccine which is not a true vaccine, only protects you from getting a bad case of the virus.
It is basically pretreatment for covid.
      To alleviate the smptoms.
Currently 40 % of the new cases are effecting those who have been vaccinated.

What is the source of your 40% figure. The CDC estimates 35,000 breakthrough infections last week, out of a total of 550,000 infections that is only 6.6% .

Before I had my kid, I’ve never gotten a flu shot and had only gotten the flu exactly twice in my life with the second being mild. I get the shot every year now bc I don’t want to be bed-ridden and not being able to take care of and play with him. If necessary, I have no issues with getting a Covid vaccine seasonally. I’ve also stopped backcountry skiing for the same reasons.

You have literally no clue what you’re talking about and just sound embarrassing, honestly.

You clearly don’t know what a fascist or a grifter is but seem to think using these terms all the time makes you anything other than an unoriginal lame.

You clearly don’t know anything about the virus, the vaccines, the science, or any of it let alone how many people from all sides of the political spectrum broke Covid guidelines over and over.

And you clearly don’t know that the term snowflake was coined to describe entitled all talk loudmouths like you who move somewhere and expect to be catered to.

It’s pretty obvious who the person without any respect or empathy is, and it’s funny you bring up $$$ and ignore the way Big Pharma and their puppets in medicine and academia and the government are responsible for this and profiting off of it.

Grifter; See family of White House occupants from 1/2017-1/2021. EX. Also see their “charities, university, 24/7/365 campaign solicitations” etc.

Fascist; See tendencies, actions, policies, and ideology of current Trumpublicon party (formerly Republican/Libertarian/Tea/Nationalist party) in America.

The COVID virus. Amazing how many other countries (usually with a national healthcare plan) did not and still don’t have a large number or percentage of COVID cases, deaths, and outbreaks we’ve had here in America. America equals 4% of the world’s population. Yet, close to 15% of the world’s COVID-related deaths!! Read that again, America equals 4% of the world’s population. Yet, close to 15% of the world’s COVID-related deaths!!
WHY IS THAT??!! Explain that to me genius since you seem to believe you know all the answers.
A MAJORITY of those deaths in America could have been AVOIDED with COMPETENT, responsible, accountable leadership!!

Snowflakes; A descriptive term of projection mainly used by inhabitants of a certain political/social belief because they typically lack facts to support their arguments usually based on emotions.

It’s a shame you seem to have bought into the projection and propaganda. Good luck.

Now, can we get back to discussing the game and business of baseball Philly fan?

I’ve been taking it seriously from the beginning.

Vaccines were never meant to deal with this sort of thing. It’s a Frankenstein that shouldn’t even exist.

If people were smart, they’d be realizing why athletes who test positive ended up fine and taking the cue to get in the best shape possible and just be healthy rather than simply relying on a vaccine to save them from their own bad decisions. By all means get vaccinated but don’t think that’s even remotely enough.

Ik my generation (I am an ‘04 birth) is gonna get the short end of the stick paying off the stimulus checks that tbh a lot of people needed during this time but a lot of people also abused to not have to work and get free money. .08% of the people currently hospitalized in the US with Covid were vaccinated.

99.92% of the people currently hospitalized in the US with Covid were not vaccinated.

If any confusion remains, well…that is kinda how natural selection works.
