Giants Activate Tyler Beede, Designate Jimmie Sherfy

By Anthony Franco | July 6, 2021 at 5:51pm CDT

The Giants announced they’ve reinstated right-hander Tyler Beede from the 60-day injured list. Reliever Jimmie Sherfy has been designated for assignment to open active and 40-man roster space. Additionally, San Francisco placed outfielder Jaylin Davis on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain and recalled infielder Jason Vosler.

Beede is in line to make his first major league appearance since 2019. The former first-round pick underwent an ill-timed Tommy John surgery in March 2020. That cost him all of last season and almost the entire first half of 2021. Beede was a regular member of San Francisco’s starting five during his last healthy run. He made 24 appearances (22 starts) in 2019, tossing 117 innings of 5.08 ERA ball with average strikeout and walk rates (21.6% and 8.8%, respectively). There could be room for Beede to step back into the rotation; Logan Webb has been on the IL since last month due to a shoulder strain, and Sammy Long just hit the IL himself due to a low back strain.

Sherfy signed a minor league deal with the Giants over the offseason and earned a spot on the big league roster in early June. The 29-year-old pitched respectably over 10 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Sherfy has pitched in the majors in each of the past four years, combining for 56 innings of 3.21 ERA/3.99 SIERA ball. That solid track record could attract the interest of another club, although any acquiring team would have to keep the out-of-options Sherfy on the active roster or designate him for assignment themselves. The Giants will have a week to trade the right-hander or place him on waivers.

Oh dear lord, here comes the Beede dumpster fire…If he could just throw a few decent innings before the deadline, maybe the G’s could move him somewhere for gas money.

He was really effective his last 10 or so starts in 2019.

And then put up a 6.56 ERA in triple A this year

I remember in 2014 draft I wanted Beede over Nola at 7 for the Phillies. Good thing they didn’t listen to me.

I really don’t know what the Giants expect out of Beede. He has a WHIP of almost 2.0 in AAA. Is he suddenly going to find the strike zone in the majors?

@Sabean honestly I’m guessing the front office wasn’t too impressed by his AAA numbers, but he ran out of time on his rehab assignment. They had to activate him…Buckle up!

They could have left him in the minors after reinstating him though. Fingers crossed!

Sherfy will get traded, too much demand for bullpen arms right now.
As for Beede, I’d like to see what he can do in the bullpen this year. He throws hard and there’s no way the Giants can trust him in the rotation. But if he looks good trade him. Beede was a pick of the old regime and it’s time to move on from the former 1st round pick.

I don’t know if anyone will want him, he is a little sherfy.

Agreed! Make him a predominant 2 pitch pitcher, if he doesn’t pan out they’ll DFA him, assuming he will pass then he will live in Fresno like Gott

I agree with @davemlaw. There’s no way Sherfy gets through waivers without being claimed. So it’s either that, or he’s traded. No way we see him in Sacramento.

I remember he wouldn’t sign with the Jays when they drafted him, and he was a rapper named “Young Beedah” or something at the time. So I always kinda thought he was a dick.

Most of his rap is super wholesome and sometimes faith-based. While it’s not my scene, he’s by all rights a pretty cool dude. I’ve had the pleasure to meet him on a couple of occasions and have gotten genuinely good vibes from him.

Yesterday’s 9th inning cost Sherfy his position on the Giants. Too bad!! Giants need to get another starter. Don’t think Beede is the answer. Why didn’t they use Brebbia yesterday?

I think if the Cards want him they’ll have to trade for him. No team can risk trying to get him through a waiver claim. Too many teams are looking for bullpen help, and Sherfy has shown enough for more than one team to be intrigued.

Sherfy was actually pretty decent. Couple of bad outings, a few really good ones, unfortunately that’s how it goes in the SF pen though. Short leashes for everyone not named Jarlin Garcia, Tyler Rogers, or Jake McGee.

Well I think the thing with Garcia and Rogers is track record, both were on other team last year so it is a little easier to hang with them when they have a bad outing and McGee has had a couple of terrible meltdowns but otherwise has performed like a late inning guy/closer

In my opinion it’s time for Zaidi to make a big move, because the Giants are about to sink like a rock in the NL West.

      Central Valley:

I’m not so sure about that. Yeah, they look a little less dynamic, the season is wearing on, but the Padres, and Dodgers, also have seemed to have lost a bit. The Dodgers just lost 3 in a row, and the Padres are 5-5 over their last 10.

A lot depends on when they get some of their roster back. When are Belt, Longoria, LaStella, Webb, and Sanchez due back? If most of those guys return relatively soon, a big move by Zaidi may be unnecessary. Although Zaidi making some additions wouldn’t hurt.

Hate to say it but Beede is 28, he has had many chances, but his stats in AAA with 35 IP and 32 BB’s with 6.56 ERA, BAPIP .323 – is not going to have much slack come show us now or its over.

He has K potential, but his debut this season 1IP 3ER 2K’s is not delivering or making any statement to be kept.. He did produce 0 BB although threw many balls during that inning – likely they were swinging away on him.

I have feeling they will look to trade him or just outright him altogether as he has a valuable 40 man roster space for the likes of Caleb Kilian.

Yeah I agree. That appearance today was pretty underwhelming. With a 9-0 lead he should have been pounding the strike zone. Instead he hits a guy with a breaking ball, and that guy winds up scoring.

It was like he was throwing with the mindset of a SP, instead of a reliever with a big lead. My hope was maybe he could come out of the bullpen.

I know, that’s anecdotal, and proves nothing, but I couldn’t understand, with a good FB, why he wasn’t pounding the zone with it. Plus, he misses by so much sometimes that they’re easy takes for the hitter, just wasted pitches.

Webb has the same problem, but given his age I still have hope that he’ll develop into a good pitcher. I have little hope for Beede though.

Beede is done – I like the guy too, lots of good character from him, but when Caleb is pitching flat out dominate style and has no walks issue — this year giants ain’t just walking through the season to allow Beede to not progress.

Watch for Giants to make a move soon and replace Beede with Caleb Kilian.
