Mets Claim Geoff Hartlieb

By Steve Adams | July 9, 2021 at 1:29pm CDT

The Mets have claimed right-hander Geoff Hartlieb off waivers from the Pirates, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports (via Twitter). Pittsburgh designated the 27-year-old for assignment last weekend.

Hartlieb has spent parts of the past three seasons with the Pirates, totaling 62 innings with an unsightly 6.97 ERA. He’s fanned a below-average 20.7 percent of his opponents against a bloated 14.2 percent walk rate, though his 51.4 percent ground-ball rate is comfortably above-average. The 6’5″ righty relies primarily on a sinker that sits in the 94-95 mph range and a slider that clocks in around 84-85 mph.

While Hartlieb hasn’t had much success in the Majors to this point, he has an outstanding minor league track record. The former 29th-round pick has a 2.82 ERA in parts of six minor league seasons, including a 2.37 mark in 49 1/3 innings of Triple-A ball. He’s also whiffed 31.3 percent of his Triple-A opponents with a much better 9.4 percent walk rate and a massive 64.3 percent grounder rate.

Hartlieb was a starter in his college days at the Division-II Lindenwood University, but he’s worked exclusively as a reliever in pro ball. He has a minor league option remaining beyond the 2021 season, so he gives the Mets some flexibility in the ’pen beyond the current campaign as long as he sticks on the 40-man roster.

Maybe he can figure it out with a change of scenery. In 2018 in Pittsburgh he threw strikes and got pounded. So instead he changed into a nibbler who walks everybody. The Pirates finally seem to be developing a few bullpen arms and can probably afford to lose Hartlieb.

Good luck to the mets. Pirates have been excellent with pitcher development, so if they gave up on him it isn’t good.

They haven’t even been close to being “good at anything resembling pitcher development”.
They are the worst ever in this arena (and have been that way for a century).
Pirates have The Medusa Touch when it comes to pitchers.
          Always have.
There is a reason that only retread/rehab garbage comes to Pittsburgh. (They got no where else to go).
And a reason that any quality arm stays away as if the plague were there. (They have seen multitudes of names be ruined by “Pirates Pitcher Development”. For ages.
Until (if ever) the Pirates fix this fundamental and fatal flaw? They are a dead stick.
Because their “pitching” (if it can even be classified as that) has been historically bad since Honus Wagner days.
When Steve Blass, Vernon Law and John Candelaria are considered “among the best Pirate pitchers of all time?”
Tells ya exactly how rotten they are as a team
(It isn’t Pirate Bats that have created these decades-long/repeated droughts.
It is because they never have PITCHING.
          Ever

The Pirates seemed to have the touch about 5 years ago but they lost it since, the best proof is how Gerritt Cole became a true Ace after he left Pittsburg.

Getting serious though Come trade deadline Mets don’t want to trade any of their good prospects which one can understand so instead of Bryant they will end up with Cabrera back and instead of a starter like berrios they will end up with Tyler Anderson ! They might be fine with those moves

You heard it here first! Cubs are close to trading 3B Kris Bryant to a mystery team. Expect deal to be done by this time next week!

Tik Tok. You are probably right on that.
Though the “mystery team” is most likely “The Yankees”. Some mystery.
“Mystery team” is always the Yankees, and they are likely the only ones willing to pay for Bryant.
And they need to sign and secure every bat they can buy ASAP. (cause they sure can’t pitch their way out of a wet paper bag. So they may as well let a non-cheating Cole do his CC Sabathia impersonation impersonation and score 8 runs a game for him so they have a chance…and maybe sign Cruz too and see if they can score 14 runs when Taillon pitches, so even he stands a chance).
      Mystery team? The Yankees.
They are always buyers. Always tall in “code” (aka: they like to be “mysterious”…but they are as blatantly un-stealth as a zit on the end of one’s nose).
      Bryant. Yankees.
Cubs, Reds, Cardinals are all pretty much taking the proverbial knee this year to The Brewers anyway in the Comedy Central. Bucs are always sellers. But are they still even considered a “team”?)
And since “barely over .500” (where the Brewers will finish) will likely win the Central? Now is definitely the time for the Cubbies to sell and begin a rebuild. So that it doesn’t last longer than the Pirates’ Neverending Story of one.

    There’s one gone. (Finally).
Now…hey Pittsburgh. Seek ye…THE DODGERS AGAIN. (seems that them DODGERS are always after some pitcher who has no self control)
They gave ya 2 chances to take the Nightmare of Lolitaville (Vazquez) off your hands in 2018 and 2019..and ya didn’t
Now…with another they currently have on the way OUT…forever…they gonna need some pitchers.
Send em Kuhl. Send em Anderson. Send em Rich Rod. Send em Miller. Send em Crick. Send em ANYONE they ask for and get 10 young arms back and 2 catchers.
(You’ll get it. The DODGERS offered 2 pitchers a 2B AND a Catcher for JUST VAZQUEZ before).
And the DODGERS are down 2 pitchers now. Kershaw with a bum elbow and “he who shall not be named as MLBTR is auto-muting all mentions of it”…so we will stick to what DODGERS need and that’s it.
Of course…the Dodgers are “always going for it”. Good. Fine. Dandy. They will pay for anyone.
So hey Pittsburgh. Forget the Muts and Send an entire STAFF of “starters” to Los Angeles…in exchange for 10 young arms and 2 catchers.
    Right now

For if Cherington is as shrewd as folks say he is.
Then you FLEECE the Dodgers…right now.
For all you can get. In exchange for them getting ALL the current starters on Pgh staff (if that’s what it takes) to “help em limp to a Wild Card this year”. And LOAD UP on young arms in the minors (to which…the Dodgers seem to have an endless crop of). They will make a deal.
They already are saving on “bobblehead money and merchandise”. So they even have some funds to send Nutting (who always wants more pocket change anyway to buy another cheap suit)…so yeppers Me Buccos.
You FLEECE them Dodgers right now.
That team is down. And has a pile of investment in this year so it is “do or die”. And they shall pay.
Pirates? You “pirate” now. If you ever wanna chance at winning…again? You kick em when they are down and desperate. And then RAID em.
      As a “pirate” does.
Wake up Ben. The Muts wanna give you an OF for Frazier? Lol. Pass.
Outfielders come a dime a dozen.
But you could (literally) RAID the Dodgers entire farm system…make one mega deal and VOILA! Ya got some semblance of a team again, or at least a foundation of one…in The Burgh.
Dodgers are now between a rock, an iceberg, a continent, and a really hard place. They BETTER win the World Series now. Because they are gonna have egg on their faces with a massive fan base in Kalifornikistan, once the “drama of their mound hound” plays out, either way it plays out.
And if Kershaw is hurting? Then they are done.
Pirates…give em all ya got PLUS Frazier. And the “pirate booty” return would be massive.

@tstats this is a classic case of a yinzer discussing baseball. When you look closely through the lens of a logical human, you can kind of see where it doesn’t make sense. “10 young arms for 2 catchers” seem logical right? Wrong, it is in fact insane.

        • WarkMohlers

Oh whoops, I apologize. That was an entire pitching staff for 10 young arms and 2 catchers.

          Apology accepted. Lol.
Good ol “Tee Off On Geoff” Hartlieb.
          Enjoy him Mets.
          Am certain we yinzers, won’t.
I am frankly amazed that Nutting didn’t send The Mets a free season pass to 7 Springs, for you to simply take him off our hands before.
Maybe Nutting is learning that “if you simply waive the garbage”…that another team will pick it up, for free?
          Enjoy Mets. Enjoy.

I responded to someone who may not know that it is a common occurrence in PGH for yinzers to not follow the Pirates while still offering up their advice for fixing the team. Your Jackson Pollock of comments seem to fit the bill.

But I do like the “Nexxxxt”, very sassy.

Edit: sorry, the apology was a joke, too. Sorry, if it wasn’t obvious.

waiver wire scrap is all he is.
And all he ever gonna be.
Pirates need…10 young arms and 2 catchers.

When a pitcher is DFA’d…from the Pittsburgh Pirates, that means he must be either as bad or worse than the other garbage that litters up the mound?…then how is he (in any way) going to be good for a team like the Mets, who sometimes actually LOOK and PLAY like a baseball team. A good one at times too?
Bottom line: “You can’t hold a JOB with Pittsburgh? Then you shouldn’t hold one…anywhere”
Pirates consider a 5.00 ERA halfway decent. Just so long as the scrub goes 5 innings 1 time every 4 starts. Or manages to NOT blow leads as a mop up man, every other outing.
Pitchers…like Tee Off On Geoff have come and gone from Pittsburgh with extreme regularity, as far back as I can remember.
Soon as Jimmy Anderson or Ian Snell or Chris Archer was gone…they were forgotten. As will be Hartlieb.
Problem is…simply HAVING this type of lame-o on the roster, at ANY given time…makes a 20 year old who can (literally) do just as bad, and actually begin learning the league at 20.
    Not 27 or 28.
Thusly? They rot in the minors. Maybe get 7 or 8 innings in Late September, only to linger around until they are (like this scrub) 27 or 28…and are wasted.
    “Pirate Pitcher Development”? Lol.
    It is nonexistent.
