The Mets and Cubs have discussed various permutations of deals including right-hander Zach Davies and one of Kris Bryant or Javier Baez, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (all Twitter links). SNY’s Andy Martino reports that the Mets are looking for pitching depth and a bat, with Bryant, Baez and Rockies shortstop Trevor Story among their targets. The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders tweets that the Mets are “very” interested in Story, though Saunders has also suggested that if the Rockies trade Story, it’ll likely happen close to the actual deadline.
Reports connecting the Mets to Bryant, in particular, date back to the offseason. He’d give the Mets the right-handed bat they covet and a defensive upgrade over the reportedly available J.D. Davis at third base, in addition to providing a corner outfield option depending on injuries or pitching matchups. Baez, meanwhile, could step in for the currently injured Francisco Lindor until he’s able to return next month, then slide over to second base. That same scenario could apply to Story.
Of the three bats in question, Bryant is having far and away the best all-around season. The former Rookie of the Year and NL MVP is slashing .267/.358/.503 with 18 home runs. Bryant endured a miserable slump in June, collecting just nine hits in 88 plate appearances and going all month without a multi-hit game, but he’s bounced back in July with a hearty .290/.405/.516 showing. He’s earning $19.5MM in 2021 and comes with the highest price tag of this high-profile trio.
Baez, earning $11.65MM in his final year of club control, has shown the most power of the bunch but also the most concerning levels of plate discipline. He’s ripped 22 homers, but as his .248/.292/.484 slash shows, his on-base abilities (or lack thereof) are somewhat troublesome. Baez has walked at just a 4.2 percent clip this year, and while he’s always been a free swinger, his current 36.3 strikeout rate is the worst among all qualified hitters. That said, he and Lindor would form a dynamic defensive middle infield tandem.
The 28-year-old Story, like Baez and Bryant, is a free agent at season’s end. He’s having arguably the worst season of his career in 2021, hitting .240/.312/.429 (84 wRC+) with 13 home runs. Eight of those long balls have come since June 20. On the one hand, that’s encouraging. On the other, he’s batted .211 with a .270 OBP in that time. Story’s track record speaks for itself — he batted .292/.355/.554 with 83 home runs from 2018-20 — but he hasn’t really found much consistency in 2021. He’s earning $18.5MM this season.
As for Davies, he’d provide the Mets with a rental starter to help cover innings at the back of the rotation while their top starters mend. Jacob deGrom is currently on the injured list, while neither Noah Syndergaard nor Carlos Carrasco has thrown a pitch for the Mets so far in 2021. (Carrasco is expected to return this weekend.) The need for help at the back of the rotation has been exacerbated by injuries to David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi, Jordan Yamamoto and others.
Even among the Mets’ healthy starters, right-hander Taijuan Walker has begun to struggle, allowing 16 runs in his past 9 1/3 innings. The Mets already went out and acquired Rich Hill, but it seems they’re still understandably keen on stockpiling as much depth as possible for the final couple months of the season — and for a hopeful postseason bid.
The 28-year-old Davies has made 22 starts and pitched to a 4.39 ERA for the Cubs, but he’s averaged fewer than five innings per outing and carries some rather unsightly strikeout and walk rates. Davies’ 16.3 percent strikeout rate is third-lowest among qualified starters, while his 12.1 percent walk rate is the highest of any qualified starter in MLB. That 4.2 K-BB% differential is also last among qualified starters. Given that profile and the fact that he’s a pending free agent with an $8.625MM salary, Davies probably doesn’t carry too much standalone value.
It’s been a mostly quiet deadline season thus far for the Mets, who lead the NL East by three and a half games. The second-place Phillies, however, completed their second improbable walk-off comeback of the week yesterday to continue putting pressure on their rivals. Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News tweeted last night that owner Steve Cohen is pushing his front office to be active and improve the club, so it seems fair to anticipate some fireworks coming from Queens today.
The Baseball Fan
Go with Bryant. It looks like a good fit
ChiSox_Fan
Until KB’s back flares up again or some other “owie”.
cubs2016
Wtf are you talking about? Rizzo was the one with back problems. Why don’t you go worry about Eloy playing the field when he has no right to be anything other than a DH?
classicmixup
Why even reply to the troll ChiSox_Fan. Obviously a tool.
Noel1982
He wants Clint Frazier and Miguel andujar
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
But who else? The cubs need pitching.
Noel1982
Just ride it out this year and copy farhan zombie or whatever his name is ! He can’t be the Only one smart enough to identify misguided under appreciated pitching like gausman an wood !
johnnynoitall
He’s been a troll for years
Noel1982
Kris Bryant and or Craig Kimbrell to the rays ! Thank the lord for small markets an thank the lord I never have to see jd Davis or dom smith play for my team !
ruckus727
Rizzo is the one with the back issue not KB.
ChiSox_Fan
Back, elbow, oblique, hamstring injuries.,. Yada.
KB has had them all.
KCJ
Chisox_fan –
I bet you have too, along with a whole host of other maladies in your lifetime. It’s called the human body, Things happen to it. KB is no more likely to have these injuries occur again than any player on your beloved ChiSox team. How’s the year gone with Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez by the way?
Ignorant troll.
Catuli Carl
You’d be over the moon if the Sox got KB.
Chief Two Hands
Maybe Chisox_Fan just suffers from one malady…”butt soreness” from sitting on it all day, every day in his mom’s basement…that is likely his chronic “owie.”
ChiSox_Fan
Nope.
Not giving up what Cubs want for a rental.
Only having a good year ’cause he becomes FA.
KB is soft. Can’t play every day without whining.
ChiSox_Fan
Sounds like what u r experiencing.
Chief “Two Hands” with one of them up his ars.
The other up his nose. Pick a winner.
desertbull
Do you even baseball, bro?
ABCD
Go massage Eloy’s groin, ChiSox_Fan.
bleedinblue 2
And again your insecurity of being a White Sox fan and jealousy of the more popular team in town brings you back for an another idiotic comment. I feel sorry for you.
Noel1982
No he’s right lets all get real if one had to choose between woodchuck turds and jd davis 100% including all Mets fans would choose woodchuck turds!
ChiSox_Fan
Wrigleyville will be a ghost town next week and for the rest of the century!!
Enjoy!
Noel1982
Nobody who has even been been s met can change that
Noel1982
Nobody who has even been been s met can change that bc Mets suck
ChiSox_Fan
Huh?!
raz427
I mean have the White Sox even sold out a game yet this year? Shouldn’t talk about attendance with the other team. I’m not even a Cubs fan so no horse in this race, but I live in the city. I’ve seen your comments a few months ago. You wanted KB for a bag of Potato Chips. Don’t act like you could have used him in RF. Probably the same guy who justified the Tatis/Shields deal. I found Jerry’s or KW’s burner fellas.
Noel1982
Let me rephrase and make a fair trade proposal jd Davis and dom smith to the pirates fpr cash ! Not much cash but some
Noel1982
What is this nonsense, the only thing that matters here is nobody should ever want to trade for Jd Davis or dom smith
KCJ
Noel1982 –
You’re clearly operating on a whole different level than the rest of us in the world. Your posts and thoughts don’t make any sense logically or grammatically. Very bizarre line of thinking with this one.
Noel1982
No no no I’m no even a Cubs fan but tell Cubs fans why they just have to trade Bryant for a scrub like jd daivs? I want to read the discourse so go for it
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Maybe slowdown when rage typing Noel. Pull your head out of your ass and take a deep breath before pounding those keys.
Noel1982
Or tell me why do the Cubs need jd davis or dom smith ? Convince anyone why
Noel1982
Maybe I’m just off let’s see if there’s any other cub fans who can say why Cubs need jd davis and pr dom smith ?
iml12
I don’t know how Wisdom doesn’t already have the job for next year. Cubs should be focused on prospects and figure out what they need for the mlb club in the off season.
Noel1982
If Cubs can’t get the catcher prospect from giants or Padres or even the one left by the dodgers and another top 10 prospect they should do that and kick in Kimbrell, what they don’t need are non talents like jd davis dom smith Miguel andujar or Clint Frazier!
johnnynoitall
So you’re saying it’ll look like “The Cell”?
Noel1982
Bryant to the rays ! That’s all I can confirm right now
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
I’m shocked the Mets aren’t trading for Javier Baez truthfully. He is even willing to play 2nd base when Lindor comes back. My NL team is the Cubs. Baez is a lot better now then Bryant. Mets probably have to give up the Baty kid and another prospect in their 10-15 for Baez. Get it done!
Noel1982
Mets might not want to make a trade bc their version of the Yankees offering Clint Frazier and ,Miguel andujar is Mets offering losers like jd davis and dom s,mith for superstars get real
LongTimeFan1
Noel1982 – I think you need to get real. Both JD and Smith are quality major league players. Including either in a trade package must absolutely bring back some quality controllable players.
Noel1982
No a jd Davis and dom smith package at most should bring the Mets back cash and future considerations ! Any argument otherwise is null and void
LongTimeFan1
@Noel1982 –
My prior response isn’t an argument. It’s fact.
joeyrocafella
I wouldn’t trade Baty for a rental on Baez. Baez’s strikeout rate is crazy, and we don’t need anyone else that strikes out a ton, we already have Alonso and Conforto for that. I would trade Mauricio since Lindor already has SS locked up for the next decade
Noel1982
Well max both sides be content when there is no trade
padam
Agreed.
chitown311
Baez and Kimbrel would be my guess. Fills the need at SS and another option for late inning/closer role
VonPurpleHayes
They don’t really need a closer. They need starters. Davies, Gibson…etc.
Bill M
Gibson is the guy that they should be targeting
mookiesboy
watch Diaz much?
VonPurpleHayes
Diaz is among the league leaders in saves. He has scary outings, but overall he is fine. The Phillies and Braves would kill for a reliever like Diaz.
SonnySteele
Mookiesboy: How do you see the addition of Kimbrel affecting Diaz?
stymeedone
They need talent. If they can’t find SP to their liking, stack the bullpen!
SonnySteele
If that happens, Baez might get to face Amir Garrett again this weekend.
DJ-VJ
I would definitely love to get Kimbrel in addition to any other players. They need another closer-type guy.
Cosmo2
The Mets have Guillorme. There is no need at SS, Baez isn’t even that good. Are the Andy’s really gonna trade assets for a SS, then sign a mega deal with him, then trade more assets for another SS within a year? That would be mega dumb.
iml12
Baez/Lindor up the middle is an insane combo. According to the radio Baez would only switch to second to play with Lindor. I think it would be a huge boost for the Mets and when Baez is hot he can carry a team.
Noel1982
This is me being non hating Mets ! If Mets just wait till free agency they will be able to sing him for nothing beside a Mid rd comp pick
Cosmo2
Who does Baez replace? Probably a better player than he is. And I don’t see a .292 OBP guy carrying a team. I’d pass.
iml12
Go look at some of his monthly splits the last couple years. He can rake for weeks at a time. The problem is he can also go ice cold for weeks at a time. He is a world class defender all the time.
Cosmo2
Not interested in a player who rakes for a month then sucks for two months or whatever it is, even if I believed such a thing was a talent and not just random statistical groupings.
Noel1982
Trevor story to the Mets is picking up steam that’s more in their wheelhouse then kris Bryant
iml12
He’s a phenomenal player that would help any team in the league. I suspect if the Mets got him you would quickly change your tune.
BobGibsonFan
Just go get lindor.
rparker68
He’s injured lol
Deleted_User
LOL
LordD99
It’ll be funny if the Mets get Story and realize over the next two months they signed the wrong SS long term.
Deleted User
True. It should have been Correa
Bi Soxual
LOL Correia can’t do even 110 games a season, only going to get more pathetic as he gets older
Deleted User
He’s had two years in a row now where he has stayed healthy the whole season. I’m putting the injury prone label behind him, but thanks, Doc
Bi Soxual
LOL Hey Numb Nuts’ great he could see out that 60 games last yr!!! No IL for masssage injury last yr.Fantastic.
Bill Kane
This doesn’t contain any useful information. It states the obvious that the Mets are looking to improve.
Catuli Carl
That’s news to a lot of us.
Cosmo2
It starts the conversation we are now all having, so there’s that.
powerboat9
Baez and Davies would be a nice fit for the Mets
ChiSox_Fan
Where does Guillorme play when Baez moves over to 2B?
cubs2016
Easy, the bench.
Cosmo2
I’d start Guillorme over Baez. Don’t need Baez.
Noel1982
What’s the problem then no need for Bryant Baez or Contreras
Flyby
utility guy off the bench and reliever. He probably better than most of the philly relievers 🙂 J/K
but who says Baez moves to 2nd hasnt he played a decent cf or am i confusing him with a different cubby that went to cf from the infield. Very likely am as im getting old.
I would probably move him to 3rd instead of 2nd if he has familiarity there so you dont throw off McNeil at 2nd where he has played pretty well instead of 3rd which is i think is his worst defensive position creating another headache.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Baez has said that he was willing to play CF, but then Maddon at the time said that was never going to happen.
Baez is excellent at 2B, when he first came up he mostly played 2B and even a bit of 3B.
The problem with Baez at the plate is that the Cubs had a massive hole in RF and generally not enough OBP. Baez should be a #9 hitter on a team with a DH, where his baserunning prowess would provide leverage to the top of the lineup.
VonPurpleHayes
Walker is done. They need a starter or two, but that’s really it. This division stinks.
jim stem
@von
Preseason, I felt if we got 20 starts and 120 innings out of Walker, it would be a win for us. He needs time off now or a shift to bullpen before we lose him, physically or mentally. He’s a 5th starter who needs to be nursed through the rest of the season.
With deGrom, Syndergaard and Carrasco, there are no guarantees. That leaves us with Stroman, Megill and Hill. That doesn’t get it done. How many games have we simply given away trotting out these AAAA pitchers all year long and relied on bullpen games to get us through series? Six SP and 7 RP, that’s the winning combination.
wnymetsfan
Not sure he is done but likely could use some extra rest or even a 10 day trip to the IL to rest his arm. I think a lot of starters are going to hit a wall after not pitching a lot last year and now having to pitch a full regular season.
Noel1982
Mets fans don’t understand why Cubs aren’t all over a scrub like Jd Davis for their best assets ! Jd Davis is becoming the same joke as Clint Frazier and Miguel andujar and to go old school Jd Davis is ender Inciarte ! Mets fans mad at Cubs fans for not wanting a yahoo like Jd Davis is stupid
justacubsfan
Jd davis rakes. He just cannot play the field. Way better than andujar/frazier.
Although, the cubs should be targeting mauricio.
SeeUonTheUlnarSide
With Lindor signed long term, Mauricio is apparently available, but they are shying away from giving him up for rental players.
Noel1982
So forget kris Bryant and go get Simmons and Iglesias from the angels it won’t cost a real prospect at all
khopper10
Simmons doesn’t play for LA, troll
Noel1982
Ok well send them to them to the twins thenv
LongTimeFan1
@justacubsfan – He’s playing a solid third base since his return from IL.and has a rather strong arm.
VonPurpleHayes
Haha in before we find out the Cubs traded for Davis.
Noel1982
Haha In first jd dsvis is a scrub ! He’s the same joke of a trade asset as ,Miguel andujar and Clint Frazier
VonPurpleHayes
Davis is better than all those mentioned, but I get your point. He’s a terrible fielder and can’t stay healthy. But he’s a hitting machine.
Noel1982
Jd David is a worthless piece of bull corn to the Cubs ! Maybe someone will think he’s as cool as you say and offer fair value for him , fair value for him is 32 k in cash
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Three way deal, they can send Davis to the Diamondbacks or the Orioles.
Noel1982
I got a three way deal for you davis to the dbacks and Madison bumgarner to the Mets ! Forget the third team ! This is a very fair deal
StudWinfield
IMO Davis, Vientos and another top 20 prospect would be an equitable deal for both sides. If you’re rebuilding you can live with Davis at 1b/LF/dh and let his bat talk.
Noel1982
No Cubs should give up cash or another prospect just not to have the shame of trading for a joe blow like Jd davis
YakAttack
Did JD Davis steal your girlfriend or something? Yeesh!
Noel1982
He did nothing to me but I also wouldn’t want to trade the most valuable thing I have for anything to do with him
VonPurpleHayes
You’re judging Bryant as a whole instead of 2 months of Bryant. That’s what his value is. Just 2 months.
Noel1982
No I think Cubs should just take the comp pick over jd davis and or dom smith! What do those idiots have like one or two more years top of control over him? Your Phillies can make a better deal then the Mets
Noel1982
Von you know what Cubs would appreciate from Phillies over Mets as far as a kris Bryant trade is concerned? Phillies would know better then to offer scrubs like jd Davis or dom smith
VonPurpleHayes
Phillies don’t have anyone as good as Davis or Smith to trade.
Noel1982
They have prospects who odds are a giant making it but have better upside then Davis and smith , those guys don’t even have much more control then Bryant it’s no even logical why Cubs would want those guys , now they would love Howard from your team
Noel1982
Your team could probably get Bryant an more importantly Kimbrell from Cubs for Howard
Cosmo2
You are wrong about everything here, Noel. Davis and Smith are under control well beyond next year.
Noel1982
Well they are under control and so very good you should be thrilled neither will ever be Cubs right ?
Noel1982
The answer is in noise Cubs don’t need your stiffs and Mets don’t need Bryant or baez
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Go easy on him. Noel is a little special.
Cosmo2
Noel the troll. Heh. Nothing you’ve said here so far is anything but nonsense. And you’re Davis point us a complete straw man. You are arguing against an idea you made up yourself, Noel.
Noel1982
Today is the trade deadline lets see what happens with jd davis and kris Bryant! If they are involved with the same trade I’ll give you all the dap in the world! But if not you need to consider what a one sided trade idea it was
davidk1979
It’s we tried season as Sandy had Puma write about the “absurd asks” in trades—Why the heck would anyone want Zach Davies? He has a expected E.r.a of nearly six and has had ugly peripherals most of his career. He has been a walk machine this year and is this generations version of Steve Trachsel. Yes, I know Trachsel was fine here a couple years but I’ll always remember how horrid he was in 2006 and lucked into 15 wins.
Bi Soxual
Casablanca Rick is back shopping on the North side for Kimbrel this time.
cwsOverhaul
That would be surprising if Hahn seriously pursued Kimbrel today if they didn’t want to part with a decent enough prospect to get lesser cost but solid rental of Hudson. Rodriguez from Pitt will also have a bidding war. Ian Kennedy or one of the Balt bp arms would be a letdown IMO.
ChiSox_Fan
Hahn will get Kimbrel and Contreras
cwsOverhaul
Apologies…….Hahn sure was shopping for Kimbrel!
Great call.
Central Valley
No disrespect to Farhan Zaidi, he’s done great with the rebuild and stocking the farm with prospects, but it’s time to get a couple studs that the fan base can get really excited about.
All Star caliber talent. With exception to a couple of the old guys, there is nobody on the Giants they can market, sell jerseys, make folks want to go spend their hard earned money on tickets to go and watch.
Bill M
I realize Bryant, Baez, & Story are excellent players, but they’re all 2 month rentals. Are they really gonna give the Mets that much value for 2 months, over what the Mets already have? Is it really worth giving up what little the Mets have, in terms of prospects? Forget these guys. It’s all about pitching. Concentrate on a starter and a bullpen piece.
wnymetsfan
They need to improve the offense especially against lefties so a right handed hitter who is good against lefties would help. That being said the Mets FO is not going to trade their top prospects like Baty, Alvarez for a rental. So they may get someone but not for the top 5 or 6 guys in the org.
Noel1982
If jd Davis and or dom smith are so good the solution is in house no ?
LarryBiitnersGhost
Mets are going to need to give up Alvarez, Mauricio and/or Baty to do any of this
VonPurpleHayes
Bryant will not warrant that kind of return.
LarryBiitnersGhost
Kimbrel & Bryant do.
ABCD
I think you’ll be disappointed, Larry. Maybe both of them would get Baty.
LarryBiitnersGhost
That’s what I’m saying – a package deal. Even if the Cubs take on some of the salary.
ABCD
There’s a lot of salary to take on, too. So, maybe the Cubs can buy a top prospect which they need. They have good depth in their system, but only Brennen Davis is a true top prospect right now.
Fred K. Burke
Unlikely the Mets give up higher ranked talent for Bryant, Baez, Story or Davies. All upcoming free agents. Maybe, they move Mark Vientos and/or Khalil Lee if the Cubs/Rockies throw in some dollars.
A player like Kimbrel would change this thinking but I don’t see a fit with the Mets. They need a starter. But you never know. This interesting dynamic in play is that it appears the Cubs are very willing to add dollars to elevate the return. We will find out over the next few hours.
alc47
Why ? Nobody has given up players with that type of talent besides the Dodgers in the turner deal but that’s a completely different situation. Alvarez is untouchable and the other two only get traded for a stud player with team control, the only player that’s available that is worth either of Mauricio or Baty is Berrios.
DJ-VJ
Alvarez untouchable and Baty almost there too. Mauricio they can have.
Noel1982
What about this idea Mets don’t get Bryant? Sounds good win win
VonPurpleHayes
Bryant is certainly moving somewhere. Maybe NY. Maybe SF. Longshot Philly, but definitely won’t be a Cub.
Noel1982
He can move to any of those teams but he deserves for the Cubs a better return then a scrub like jd dsvis , and that’s not even arguable
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Does JD Davis need a restraining order, psycho?
Noel1982
No he just needs to not be traded to Chicago Cubs lol ! An he won’t thankfully
Noel1982
And again only the top 3 teams in the nl west should be allowed to consider a trade for Kris Bryant
Flyby
how many teams are willing to take on the 10 or so mil still owed to bryant right now for 2 months? Add to that how many are willing to give top prospect for a 2 month rental. 10M plus for 2 months for a top prospect is asking for alot. Even eating ALL of Rizzo’s contract got you a mid 100’s overall prospect which ranks out as the number 2 for propspects. I think maybe a prospect in the 5-10 range with the cubs eating a good portion of bryants contract sounds right or a jd davis that has years of control left and a lesser prospect for bryant also sounds about right.
I mean we are not talking about getting aroldis chapman here where it takes a top 10 prospect.
Noel1982
All the nl west contenders have both more spending and prospect means then tjhe Mets if they want to! You need to be honest Mets fans propping dom smith and Jd davis as trade chips isn’t that much less ridiculous then Yankees fan’s proposing Clint Frazier and Miguel andujar in all trades for a star
wnymetsfan
They may have more prospects but they do not have more spending means than the Mets. Cohen is worth close to 16 billion dollars and made almost as much last year as he paid for the club. They can take on salary and pay the tax without any issues. If they do not get someone it will not be because of their salary.
Noel1982
I’ll believe Mets outspent giants padre and dodgers when it happens ! It’s definitely not right now
whynot 2
How much are you paying for content on this free site?
PoloGrounds62
The Mets have no money players. We can set the table but suck at bringing them in. Lindor hits 240 with RISP and Conforto has to be sub 200 for his career. Alonso and Smith hit into more innings ending plays than anyone other than Conforto. We can give away the future for a shot but how can we get past the 4 teams that make us look like AAA? It makes sense to find more Rich Hills and forget about trading our top prospects for a Berrios whose ERA is the same as Steven Matz.
wright1970
Polo, absolutely agree except for comparing Berrios to Matz…Mets have no hitters that make contact and do well hitting with RISP. That is by far their biggest problem hence why their runs scored is the second worst in the NL. Walker is back to earth as he has never pitched 150-200 innings in his career too. We desperately need Jake and Cookie to go anywhere and Kimbrel would be nice….
billysbballz
So why not finally go for it before Degrom arm falls off? Your in first place! Trade away some prospects for guys that can hit in the clutch! Why do net fans always make excuses and say let’s hold pay and hold onto our Tew precious prospects who usually don’t amount to what you hype them up to be! Pick which ones are untouchable and trade the remaining ones that teams want snd go for it finally! Or just watch the Phillies make the trades and pass you in standings and watch Dodgers walk away with the NL Championship again!
Noel1982
They should go for it but nobody wants to trade their star for Jd Davis and dom smith , this nonsense is like Miguel andujar and Clint Frazier
jim stem
@wright
Our ‘top prospects’ have all made it to the show, so of course our system is thin right now. Personally, the ‘top prospect’ label is over used. How many of them fail to ever establish even a full time role in the bigs?
The minor league levels’ primary purpose is to develop and market players to deal for ESTABLISHED, proven major league stars if they aren’t true star quality players. The Mets system has drafted and developed a plethora of full time players over the past 5 years and they just don’t get enough credit for that success. Every system has failures, but overall, we have done a fantastic job.
LongTimeFan1
Pologrounds162 –
Berrios is a proven innings eater, with wicked stuff, is several years younger than Matz and just better.
Canosucks
Polo totally agree! that is why I was upset they got beat out of Tyler Anderson twice!
Basballfanno1
Doesn’t matter what they do no chance of beating lad
Bill M
They have little chance of beating anyone in the post season. But first they have to get there & that’s gonna be pretty hard with the current rotation
Noel1982
They need at least one starting pitcher! Bryant is a unneeded luxury, go get berrios and try to compete withi brewers rd 1
lapmando
Please do not trade Dom Smith
robert-5
Cubs will probably go for much younger prospects not likely guys w ML experience, unfortunately
Noel1982
You don’t want dom smith or jd davis anyways they don’t have much more control then the core
Cosmo2
Amen. Definitely not for a rental.
alc47
Unfortunately for the Mets most of the players we’ve seen dealt are organizations top 11-20 players which is an area the Mets are weak in. The Mets top 10 Prospects are some of the deepest in baseball but after that (11-30) it’s a weak system. I would have to imagine unless they’re willing to overpay with guys like Pete crow, Ginn or Vientos teams are gonna prefer other packages.
robert-5
That is relative to the strength of a farm system. The Yankees prospects the Cubs got, are top-10 in their weak system…for now.
The Mets also weak system may require giving up a top-10 guy, especially for 2 players. And then maybe a few lower-tier guys.
alc47
Yes but the Yankees didn’t trade a top 10 prospect in a system were they have a weak top 10. 11-30 the Yankees are loaded with talent very different from the Mets. My point was after you get outside the Mets top 10 you’re talking about a bottom 5 system in baseball.
billysbballz
Yanks top 10 is weak? Not true! They are actually pretty deep with solid lower level prospects. They are deep throughout actually but just thinned themselves out dramatically and cleared spots knowing they can’t keep everyone. They decided which prospects they want to develop snd move forward with and which ones they were willing to deal. Let’s hope this decision doesn’t wind up being a one and done wild card game or even worse not making it.
billysbballz
Over value of the Mets top 10
robert-5
Baez is also fantastic defensive 3B
The Natural
That’s what I was thinking. If Baez ended up with the Mets, I’d put him at 3B when Frankie comes back and leave McNeil at 2B or OF.
Cosmo2
Please no Baez.

Why on earth would the Mets trade JD Davis? He’s limited defensively but the bat is there and getting better. Reminds me of when they let Daniel Murphy go. And Justin Turner.
mookiesboy
hopefully they won’t. I believe his name comes up now because it came up in the winter. Much more likely they trade a Palmer or others from their 11-30 range prospects for a couple rentals
riffraff
KB , Mills and Davies for Dom Smith and Maurico..(maybe the cubs throw in the 2 scrubs the yankees dumped on them for rizzo). Mets get 2 rentals and 4yrs of Mills who looks like a solid back of rotation guy.Cubs get Rizzos replacement and Baez replacement.
Ok not my best crazy trade idea but its still morning and I’m not great in the morning lol
Jake1972
Bryant should land with the Giants along with Kimbrel. Baez and Davies make sense for the Mets…
Teams should ask what it would take to get Hendricks and Wilson C. and the Cubs should listen and do a full blown rebuild with 2026 as their target for a World Series…
af1257
Please guys, focus on control. Rentals, unless they guarantee you a World Series berth are rarely worth the trade off of young controllable players. Adding Bryant, Story, and/or Baez won’t put us in the drivers seat anywhere but the in NL East. Giving up a few years of control on an affordable JD. Davis, who has an above average bat to get 2 months of an above average bat with just a bit better glove makes zero sense. Sounds too much like Van Wagenen logic to me. Unless the plan is to extend any of the afore mentioned players after the trade, which I believe all are undoubtedly headed to free agency, look at getting an arm (if there’s one to be had) with an extra year or so of control, and maybe some hitting coach help to wake the bats up.
mookiesboy
The Mets can give up 15-30 range prospects because they are willing to absorb most of the remaining contracts Unlike years ago when we we cheap sellers
Devlsh
Starting to wonder if the Mets believe DeGrom is hurt worse than we’re led to believe.
DeGrom, Stroman, Walker, Megill, Hill, with Carrasco expected back anyday…..is there really a need for Davies?
Bill M
Absolutely. Most of the guys on that list either have injury issues or are running out of gas
Noel1982
Hey mets fans here’s my fair offer for jd Davis share by all mlb executives
Noel1982
The offer is nothing at all
backhandinbaptist
Noel you need to lay off the Davis train. It’s concerning how many times you’ve said the same thing… I know JD certainly doesn’t care and I doubt he or any other mlb players or execs read this site or it’s comments. Sit the next play out.
dm0007
Look at some of these asinine responses getting personal. Everyone is allowed an opinion. This represents everything that is wrong with Social Media. Debate is fine. Personal attacks are not
Richard Alicea
Not really, Baez’s output is much better than Bryant and he could slide into second with McNeil at 3d base when Lindor gets back, in the interim he can play SS and give us a defensive lift. Plus he’s exciting to watch and would clearly become a fan favorite whereas Bryant is dull, doesn’t project enthusiasm and is clearly sputtering offensively, most of the production was early on in the season, while Baez is still hitting the ball with authority when he catches up to it. Overall a Davies and Baez trade would better serve the needs and inject fan enthusiasm.
Noel1982
So both sides should be content Mets should be ok with out Bryant and Cubs can laugh at Mets young talent like everyone else ! Win win
Richard Alicea
Its crazy to give up top tier prospects for 2 month rentals. The Dodgers are getting Trey for an extra year that’s why they need to part with a top tier prospect or two, but Baez, Davies, and KB are all rentals and a well managed organization would not give up top tier prospects unless they have a desire to obtain that particular player and extend him. The Mets will wind up with nothing at the end of the day because they play footsie too much and will miss the deadline. Dom Smith and JD Davis should be available on a trade to help us plug current holes. Dom is not a LF’er as he has no mobility or agility; he is as stiff as a stick out in left field and has botched numerous balls that should have been caught, plus he’s slower than sloth bear. Now he would be better suited to go back to his original position of first base and then he would become a value add.
Noel1982
Jd davis and dom smith are losers big time duk faces , sorry nobody should trade a star for them
Noel1982
I retract that o got a very fair trade what about jd davis and dom smith for cash ?

Pass on Story unless we get Marquez or Gray in the deal. His home/away splits are, as expected, vastly different. We’d be getting all the ‘away’ stats: 18-20 hr, .270 average and getting older every year. Story should be an option, but we’ll down the list.
After reading the following, here is the priority of these three hitters:
1. Baez. After publicly stating he’d love to play with Lindor again and would be willing to move to 2b ONLY for him.
2. Story. Only if we get a controllable pitcher along with him. He could play SS until Lindor returns then shift to 3b. His value post-Denver is in his glove and speed.
3. Bryant. After he publicly stated he’d be willing to return to the Cubs, he short circuited his value. Add to that how he whined about his service time, failure to produce to back up his words and his propensity for month long slumps…let someone else over pay for him. I just don’t think his swing plays well outside the NL central Dixie cup sized stadiums.
4. Berrios/Pineda with Donaldson or Polanco. Add Buxton or Kepler in there? I think we match up best with the Twins. Could add Astaudillo in the deal which adds a multipositional third catcher.
– realistically, Twins are dangling Berrios to drive up the price then will ‘settle’ on moving Pineda. Pineda, Donaldson and Rogers to the Mets for Davis, Peterson and Drew Smith. Donaldson brings that one element to this team that we are missing: the refusal to lose and winning is the reason we are here mentality. Hernandez, Carter, Bachman, Knight – I want to see someone actually get p*ssed off when we lose. I wish Pete would destroy something just one time when he fails to produce. Someone needs to care on this team. Villar and Pillar, Jeff McNeil, they show some anger, and that’s ok!
skyrider1011
Any real chance the Braves bring Kimbrel back? Granted, Shane Greene and Chris Martin finally look like they are back to what they were last year? I know the biggest weakness for the braves is the bullpen, but is there any chance of Kimbrel? AA has to do something.
jim stem
When the Phils get over and stay above .500, then I’ll start being concerned. My eye is still focused on the Braves.
Phils need pitching and they continually fail to add anything other than dumpster diving: Moore and Bradley were their two primary off season adds and that’s just sad. They don’t have the prospects to deal and have failed to draft and develop any real superstars. Bohm, Howard and Kingery (and cash) for Bryant and Kimbrel would be a good deal. But they still need more…
seaver41
please do not get Baez – Mets need more contact, not less
Noel1982
Yea so I’m not sounding like a Mets hater ! Jose berrios not kris Bryant is the most impactful add Mets can have , they need him all the other pitchers are banjo joggers , if jd an dom are so great there is also no need for Bryant! Get a pitcher or two
Cosmo2
It’s a little late to start making sense, Noel. But I agree with this.
Noel1982
I actually always made sense Mets fans are just as narrow minded as lakers fans now the hell is Bryant for Davis a fair trade when it only comes with me ,ore year of control for Cubs , and if the difference is that minute what’s the need for a trade at all
Cosmo2
Agreed but what Met fan is actually suggesting Davis for Bryant? You act like this is a common suggestion. Plus, Davis is actually under control for an extra 3 years so never mind my agreeing.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Thats not a fair trade. Cubs would be fleeced again. Major downgrade he can only play one position. Bryant plays 5 extremely well.
Noel1982
Mets fans don’t like fair trades or they say fair trades are faiir that actually aren’t !
Cosmo2
For only one year. And extremely well? No, he’s not even a particularly good third baseman. He’s probably a terrible CFr and everyone can play first base. Mets don’t need a utility guy for half a season so what do we care about five positions?
Noel1982
Just as well Jeff passan is saying rays and Cubs are close to a deal for Bryant and Kimbrell rays unlike Mets have some real assets
@DaOldDerbyBastard
@ Noel1982
Are you just refreshing and rage rage typing? Put the cocaine away and take relaxing shower.
Noel1982
If my team is trading away kris Bryant it sucks but I would like for them to get back actual talent ! What Mets fans had proposed before is not actual talent
Noel1982
Kris Bryant is a rental and a luxury that only. The 3 nl west teams should have a right to bid on ?
Noel1982
All 3 nl west teams have top 5 in all mlb records an all have top 10 farm systems they won’t offer failed former prospects who are about to be eligible for arbitration
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Take a nap Noel.
SonnySteele
Who among MLB Trade Rumors commenters believe that MLB GMs give any credence to their comments here?
Cosmo2
Why would that matter? What are you on about? My guess is nobody.
Aaron Sapoznik
The Cubs figure to be the focal point of trades today, much like the Nationals were on Thursday. I’d be shocked if Kris Bryant, Craig Kimbrel and Zack Davies are on the Cubs active roster when they play the Nats in Washington tonight. Javier Baez might also be dealt but of the four, he is most likely to remain with the Cubs.
Noel1982
Agreed but only nl west teams should be allowed to bid on Bryant! They are the 3 best teams in all the nl and have top 10 farm systems ! They don’t need former Mets or Phillies top prospects due for at least tirst arbitration
54scooterb
Baez to Mets, Bryant to Rays, Duffy to Giants, Kimbrel to Boston, Davies to Padres, Happ to Baltimore (Brandon Hyde reunion) Hoyer should call DePito let’s talk Heyward.
Noel1982
Duffy already went to the dodgers! Expect the giants to do nothing even though they have much better prospects literally and record wise then Mets or Phillies to bid on kris Bryant or joes berrios or Craig Kimbrell
Aaron Sapoznik
He’s referring to Cubs utility infielder Matt Duffy.
Noel1982
What are the giants gonna give up to get him back? Season passes to Napa auto parts ?
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Talk about a contradiction. It’s not a full rebuild he says. Worst GM in baseball. Worse owners in baseball. They trade the face of the franchise. And it’s already been reported they won’t even talk about a reunion.
Cosmo2
Hyperbole much? Trading a player who is a free agent at seasons end is smart for a team that is out of it. In fact, not doing so would be the incompetent thing.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
I get that. The problem I have is the cubs zero interest in talking to rizzo about a reunion.
Cosmo2
I can see how a fan of Rizzo can feel that way. But, if I were a Cub fan, I’d let someone else break the bank for a player who looks to be in decline. Let another team pay premium for decline years.
@DaOldDerbyBastard
I want MLBTR to trade JD Davis for Noel1982. They’re both offensive with no defense.
Noel1982
And neither of us own a baseball mit, oooooooo
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Insert Benny giving them his glove gif
I hope that doesn’t go over anyone’s head.
Noel1982
True story you might not have known but the guy on the wheel chair from the bad news bears remake staring billy bob thorton was inspired by jd davis ,

90 minutes until the deadline. It’s going to be tough for me the Mets to multiple deals, waiting for pieces to fall in place. I think they are in on one blockbuster for a 3B, SP and RP from the same team.
Twins could get Davis, Peterson, Drew Smith and Vientos.
Cubs could get the same WITH McNeil if that deal involves Bryant AND Baez with Kimbrel and Davies.
