Mets Eyeing Multiple Cubs Players, Trevor Story

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2021 at 8:08am CDT

The Mets and Cubs have discussed various permutations of deals including right-hander Zach Davies and one of Kris Bryant or Javier Baez, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (all Twitter links). SNY’s Andy Martino reports that the Mets are looking for pitching depth and a bat, with Bryant, Baez and Rockies shortstop Trevor Story among their targets. The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders tweets that the Mets are “very” interested in Story, though Saunders has also suggested that if the Rockies trade Story, it’ll likely happen close to the actual deadline.

Reports connecting the Mets to Bryant, in particular, date back to the offseason. He’d give the Mets the right-handed bat they covet and a defensive upgrade over the reportedly available J.D. Davis at third base, in addition to providing a corner outfield option depending on injuries or pitching matchups. Baez, meanwhile, could step in for the currently injured Francisco Lindor until he’s able to return next month, then slide over to second base. That same scenario could apply to Story.

Of the three bats in question, Bryant is having far and away the best all-around season. The former Rookie of the Year and NL MVP is slashing .267/.358/.503 with 18 home runs. Bryant endured a miserable slump in June, collecting just nine hits in 88 plate appearances and going all month without a multi-hit game, but he’s bounced back in July with a hearty .290/.405/.516 showing. He’s earning $19.5MM in 2021 and comes with the highest price tag of this high-profile trio.

Baez, earning $11.65MM in his final year of club control, has shown the most power of the bunch but also the most concerning levels of plate discipline. He’s ripped 22 homers, but as his .248/.292/.484 slash shows, his on-base abilities (or lack thereof) are somewhat troublesome. Baez has walked at just a 4.2 percent clip this year, and while he’s always been a free swinger, his current 36.3 strikeout rate is the worst among all qualified hitters. That said, he and Lindor would form a dynamic defensive middle infield tandem.

The 28-year-old Story, like Baez and Bryant, is a free agent at season’s end. He’s having arguably the worst season of his career in 2021, hitting .240/.312/.429 (84 wRC+) with 13 home runs. Eight of those long balls have come since June 20. On the one hand, that’s encouraging. On the other, he’s batted .211 with a .270 OBP in that time. Story’s track record speaks for itself — he batted .292/.355/.554 with 83 home runs from 2018-20 — but he hasn’t really found much consistency in 2021. He’s earning $18.5MM this season.

As for Davies, he’d provide the Mets with a rental starter to help cover innings at the back of the rotation while their top starters mend. Jacob deGrom is currently on the injured list, while neither Noah Syndergaard nor Carlos Carrasco has thrown a pitch for the Mets so far in 2021. (Carrasco is expected to return this weekend.) The need for help at the back of the rotation has been exacerbated by injuries to David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi, Jordan Yamamoto and others.

Even among the Mets’ healthy starters, right-hander Taijuan Walker has begun to struggle, allowing 16 runs in his past 9 1/3 innings. The Mets already went out and acquired Rich Hill, but it seems they’re still understandably keen on stockpiling as much depth as possible for the final couple months of the season — and for a hopeful postseason bid.

The 28-year-old Davies has made 22 starts and pitched to a 4.39 ERA for the Cubs, but he’s averaged fewer than five innings per outing and carries some rather unsightly strikeout and walk rates. Davies’ 16.3 percent strikeout rate is third-lowest among qualified starters, while his 12.1 percent walk rate is the highest of any qualified starter in MLB. That 4.2 K-BB% differential is also last among qualified starters. Given that profile and the fact that he’s a pending free agent with an $8.625MM salary, Davies probably doesn’t carry too much standalone value.

It’s been a mostly quiet deadline season thus far for the Mets, who lead the NL East by three and a half games. The second-place Phillies, however, completed their second improbable walk-off comeback of the week yesterday to continue putting pressure on their rivals. Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News tweeted last night that owner Steve Cohen is pushing his front office to be active and improve the club, so it seems fair to anticipate some fireworks coming from Queens today.

I wouldn’t trade Baty for a rental on Baez. Baez’s strikeout rate is crazy, and we don’t need anyone else that strikes out a ton, we already have Alonso and Conforto for that. I would trade Mauricio since Lindor already has SS locked up for the next decade

The Mets have Guillorme. There is no need at SS, Baez isn’t even that good. Are the Andy’s really gonna trade assets for a SS, then sign a mega deal with him, then trade more assets for another SS within a year? That would be mega dumb.

Baez/Lindor up the middle is an insane combo. According to the radio Baez would only switch to second to play with Lindor. I think it would be a huge boost for the Mets and when Baez is hot he can carry a team.

but who says Baez moves to 2nd hasnt he played a decent cf or am i confusing him with a different cubby that went to cf from the infield. Very likely am as im getting old.

I would probably move him to 3rd instead of 2nd if he has familiarity there so you dont throw off McNeil at 2nd where he has played pretty well instead of 3rd which is i think is his worst defensive position creating another headache.

Baez has said that he was willing to play CF, but then Maddon at the time said that was never going to happen.

Baez is excellent at 2B, when he first came up he mostly played 2B and even a bit of 3B.

The problem with Baez at the plate is that the Cubs had a massive hole in RF and generally not enough OBP. Baez should be a #9 hitter on a team with a DH, where his baserunning prowess would provide leverage to the top of the lineup.

Preseason, I felt if we got 20 starts and 120 innings out of Walker, it would be a win for us. He needs time off now or a shift to bullpen before we lose him, physically or mentally. He’s a 5th starter who needs to be nursed through the rest of the season.

With deGrom, Syndergaard and Carrasco, there are no guarantees. That leaves us with Stroman, Megill and Hill. That doesn’t get it done. How many games have we simply given away trotting out these AAAA pitchers all year long and relied on bullpen games to get us through series? Six SP and 7 RP, that’s the winning combination.

Not sure he is done but likely could use some extra rest or even a 10 day trip to the IL to rest his arm. I think a lot of starters are going to hit a wall after not pitching a lot last year and now having to pitch a full regular season.

Yes, I know Trachsel was fine here a couple years but I’ll always remember how horrid he was in 2006 and lucked into 15 wins.

Is it really worth giving up what little the Mets have, in terms of prospects? Forget these guys. It’s all about pitching. Concentrate on a starter and a bullpen piece.

They need to improve the offense especially against lefties so a right handed hitter who is good against lefties would help. That being said the Mets FO is not going to trade their top prospects like Baty, Alvarez for a rental. So they may get someone but not for the top 5 or 6 guys in the org.

Unlikely the Mets give up higher ranked talent for Bryant, Baez, Story or Davies. All upcoming free agents. Maybe, they move Mark Vientos and/or Khalil Lee if the Cubs/Rockies throw in some dollars.
A player like Kimbrel would change this thinking but I don’t see a fit with the Mets. They need a starter. But you never know. This interesting dynamic in play is that it appears the Cubs are very willing to add dollars to elevate the return. We will find out over the next few hours.

Why ? Nobody has given up players with that type of talent besides the Dodgers in the turner deal but that’s a completely different situation. Alvarez is untouchable and the other two only get traded for a stud player with team control, the only player that’s available that is worth either of Mauricio or Baty is Berrios.

how many teams are willing to take on the 10 or so mil still owed to bryant right now for 2 months? Add to that how many are willing to give top prospect for a 2 month rental. 10M plus for 2 months for a top prospect is asking for alot. Even eating ALL of Rizzo’s contract got you a mid 100’s overall prospect which ranks out as the number 2 for propspects. I think maybe a prospect in the 5-10 range with the cubs eating a good portion of bryants contract sounds right or a jd davis that has years of control left and a lesser prospect for bryant also sounds about right.

I mean we are not talking about getting aroldis chapman here where it takes a top 10 prospect.

The Mets have no money players. We can set the table but suck at bringing them in. Lindor hits 240 with RISP and Conforto has to be sub 200 for his career. Alonso and Smith hit into more innings ending plays than anyone other than Conforto. We can give away the future for a shot but how can we get past the 4 teams that make us look like AAA? It makes sense to find more Rich Hills and forget about trading our top prospects for a Berrios whose ERA is the same as Steven Matz.

Polo, absolutely agree except for comparing Berrios to Matz…Mets have no hitters that make contact and do well hitting with RISP. That is by far their biggest problem hence why their runs scored is the second worst in the NL. Walker is back to earth as he has never pitched 150-200 innings in his career too. We desperately need Jake and Cookie to go anywhere and Kimbrel would be nice….

Our ‘top prospects’ have all made it to the show, so of course our system is thin right now. Personally, the ‘top prospect’ label is over used. How many of them fail to ever establish even a full time role in the bigs?

The minor league levels’ primary purpose is to develop and market players to deal for ESTABLISHED, proven major league stars if they aren’t true star quality players. The Mets system has drafted and developed a plethora of full time players over the past 5 years and they just don’t get enough credit for that success. Every system has failures, but overall, we have done a fantastic job.

Unfortunately for the Mets most of the players we’ve seen dealt are organizations top 11-20 players which is an area the Mets are weak in. The Mets top 10 Prospects are some of the deepest in baseball but after that (11-30) it’s a weak system. I would have to imagine unless they’re willing to overpay with guys like Pete crow, Ginn or Vientos teams are gonna prefer other packages.

Yes but the Yankees didn’t trade a top 10 prospect in a system were they have a weak top 10. 11-30 the Yankees are loaded with talent very different from the Mets. My point was after you get outside the Mets top 10 you’re talking about a bottom 5 system in baseball.

Yanks top 10 is weak? Not true! They are actually pretty deep with solid lower level prospects. They are deep throughout actually but just thinned themselves out dramatically and cleared spots knowing they can’t keep everyone. They decided which prospects they want to develop snd move forward with and which ones they were willing to deal. Let’s hope this decision doesn’t wind up being a one and done wild card game or even worse not making it.

Please guys, focus on control. Rentals, unless they guarantee you a World Series berth are rarely worth the trade off of young controllable players. Adding Bryant, Story, and/or Baez won’t put us in the drivers seat anywhere but the in NL East. Giving up a few years of control on an affordable JD. Davis, who has an above average bat to get 2 months of an above average bat with just a bit better glove makes zero sense. Sounds too much like Van Wagenen logic to me. Unless the plan is to extend any of the afore mentioned players after the trade, which I believe all are undoubtedly headed to free agency, look at getting an arm (if there’s one to be had) with an extra year or so of control, and maybe some hitting coach help to wake the bats up.

The Mets can give up 15-30 range prospects because they are willing to absorb most of the remaining contracts Unlike years ago when we we cheap sellers

Starting to wonder if the Mets believe DeGrom is hurt worse than we’re led to believe.

DeGrom, Stroman, Walker, Megill, Hill, with Carrasco expected back anyday…..is there really a need for Davies?

Noel you need to lay off the Davis train. It’s concerning how many times you’ve said the same thing… I know JD certainly doesn’t care and I doubt he or any other mlb players or execs read this site or it’s comments. Sit the next play out.

Not really, Baez’s output is much better than Bryant and he could slide into second with McNeil at 3d base when Lindor gets back, in the interim he can play SS and give us a defensive lift. Plus he’s exciting to watch and would clearly become a fan favorite whereas Bryant is dull, doesn’t project enthusiasm and is clearly sputtering offensively, most of the production was early on in the season, while Baez is still hitting the ball with authority when he catches up to it. Overall a Davies and Baez trade would better serve the needs and inject fan enthusiasm.

Its crazy to give up top tier prospects for 2 month rentals. The Dodgers are getting Trey for an extra year that’s why they need to part with a top tier prospect or two, but Baez, Davies, and KB are all rentals and a well managed organization would not give up top tier prospects unless they have a desire to obtain that particular player and extend him. The Mets will wind up with nothing at the end of the day because they play footsie too much and will miss the deadline. Dom Smith and JD Davis should be available on a trade to help us plug current holes. Dom is not a LF’er as he has no mobility or agility; he is as stiff as a stick out in left field and has botched numerous balls that should have been caught, plus he’s slower than sloth bear. Now he would be better suited to go back to his original position of first base and then he would become a value add.

Pass on Story unless we get Marquez or Gray in the deal. His home/away splits are, as expected, vastly different. We’d be getting all the ‘away’ stats: 18-20 hr, .270 average and getting older every year. Story should be an option, but we’ll down the list.

After reading the following, here is the priority of these three hitters:

    1. Baez. After publicly stating he’d love to play with Lindor again and would be willing to move to 2b ONLY for him.
    2. Story. Only if we get a controllable pitcher along with him. He could play SS until Lindor returns then shift to 3b. His value post-Denver is in his glove and speed.
    3. Bryant. After he publicly stated he’d be willing to return to the Cubs, he short circuited his value. Add to that how he whined about his service time, failure to produce to back up his words and his propensity for month long slumps…let someone else over pay for him. I just don’t think his swing plays well outside the NL central Dixie cup sized stadiums.

    4. Berrios/Pineda with Donaldson or Polanco. Add Buxton or Kepler in there? I think we match up best with the Twins. Could add Astaudillo in the deal which adds a multipositional third catcher.
    – realistically, Twins are dangling Berrios to drive up the price then will ‘settle’ on moving Pineda. Pineda, Donaldson and Rogers to the Mets for Davis, Peterson and Drew Smith. Donaldson brings that one element to this team that we are missing: the refusal to lose and winning is the reason we are here mentality. Hernandez, Carter, Bachman, Knight – I want to see someone actually get p*ssed off when we lose. I wish Pete would destroy something just one time when he fails to produce. Someone needs to care on this team. Villar and Pillar, Jeff McNeil, they show some anger, and that’s ok!

Any real chance the Braves bring Kimbrel back? Granted, Shane Greene and Chris Martin finally look like they are back to what they were last year? I know the biggest weakness for the braves is the bullpen, but is there any chance of Kimbrel? AA has to do something.

When the Phils get over and stay above .500, then I’ll start being concerned. My eye is still focused on the Braves.

Phils need pitching and they continually fail to add anything other than dumpster diving: Moore and Bradley were their two primary off season adds and that’s just sad. They don’t have the prospects to deal and have failed to draft and develop any real superstars. Bohm, Howard and Kingery (and cash) for Bryant and Kimbrel would be a good deal. But they still need more…

For only one year. And extremely well? No, he’s not even a particularly good third baseman. He’s probably a terrible CFr and everyone can play first base. Mets don’t need a utility guy for half a season so what do we care about five positions?

The Cubs figure to be the focal point of trades today, much like the Nationals were on Thursday. I’d be shocked if Kris Bryant, Craig Kimbrel and Zack Davies are on the Cubs active roster when they play the Nats in Washington tonight. Javier Baez might also be dealt but of the four, he is most likely to remain with the Cubs.

Hyperbole much? Trading a player who is a free agent at seasons end is smart for a team that is out of it. In fact, not doing so would be the incompetent thing.

90 minutes until the deadline. It’s going to be tough for me the Mets to multiple deals, waiting for pieces to fall in place. I think they are in on one blockbuster for a 3B, SP and RP from the same team.

Twins could get Davis, Peterson, Drew Smith and Vientos.

Cubs could get the same WITH McNeil if that deal involves Bryant AND Baez with Kimbrel and Davies.
