MLB Announces All-Star Replacements

By TC Zencka | July 10, 2021 at 10:38pm CDT

10:38PM: Manny Machado has been named to the NL team as a replacement for Ronald Acuna Jr., as the Braves star will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL.

5:03PM: Molina has decided against playing in the All-Star Game, telling MLB.com’s Katie Woo and other reporters that he will use the break to rest his foot.  Molina spent 11 days on the injured list due to a tendon strain in his right foot earlier this season.  Omar Narvaez will take Molina’s spot on the NL team, as announced by the Brewers.

11:12AM: Major League Baseball announced the All-Star replacements today. Since the initial rosters came out on July 4th, 10 players have proven unable to participate for one reason or another. The following players have been added to the rosters for the upcoming All-Star game:

American League

  • Tim Anderson, SS, Chicago White Sox
  • Chris Bassitt, SP, Oakland A’s
  • Whit Merrifield, 2B, Kansas City Royals
  • Joey Wendle, SS, Tampa Bay Rays

The players above are taking the place of four Astros who are now listed as unable to participate: Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Carlos Correa and Ryan Pressly, who will stay home to be with his wife as they await the birth of a child.

National League

  • Walker Buehler, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Justin Turner, 3B, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Max Scherzer, SP, Washington Nationals
  • Taijuan Walker, SP, New York Mets
  • Freddy Peralta, SP, Milwaukee Brewers
  • Yadier Molina, C, St. Louis Cardinal

The players above are taking the place of Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, Jacob deGrom of the Mets, Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres and Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants. They also account for Brandon Woodruff and Kevin Gausman, All-Stars who will be unavailable for the game because they are starting games on Sunday.

Anderson, Merrifield and Molina were elected via the Player Ballot. While Molina takes Buster Posey’s place on the roster, J.T. Realmuto will take his spot in the starting lineup.

Are the Astros boycotting the All-Star game? If so they are doing a bang up job of it.

    …

Sorry I can’t help myself sometimes, you know where the mute button is. 😉

To anybody going to the all-star game I’d suggest wearing full kit including cleats and glove. You’d have a very good chance of getting a game at this rate. Make sure your top has a favourite player on the back and you’re there…

I’m sure the Astros are terrified of your boos. Trembling. They might be the first professional athletes to have to hear boos in an away stadium. It’s gotta be tough on them.

I have a funny feeling if you called any of these athletes a coward to their faces, they’d punch your lights out. An opinion is one thing, denigrating accusations is another. Don’t hide behind a computer, it’s too easy.

Please. Only roided-out idiots would “punch your lights out” for calling them a coward. A normal human would just laugh and go back to whatever they were doing. It’s acceptable to criticize a public figure on the internet…

@Ted, Are you so brave you can call people a “coward” and feel good about it & not have to answer for your lack of integrity? Again, you can have an opinion, but to resort to name calling makes you look bad. If you accept this style, then enjoy it & keep hiding behind the net.

Ted, I equate with the net that back in the 70’s before the net, there was a phenomenon called gossip. Insignificant people huddled with their friends & called people fat, stupid, whores or cowards. When word got around it wasn’t a “roid” backed athlete that confronted you it was a 5′ tall women, or 5’5″ fat man, or a boss that punched you out. You continue to hide, call people what you want, they might find you. Think before you type.

This was always going to be the REAL punishment for the A-Holes

These dudes will never be comfortable in their own skin as long as they live.
In Altuve’s case his wife isn’t even comfortable ….

And the punishment will post date their playing careers ……

The real kick in the stomach will be when Altuve is at the grocery store when he’s 60 and overhears a Dad explaining to his son “Thats Jose Altuve the cheater Son”

This is what shame looks like folks, this is the punishment, and it cuts far deeper than any fine or suspension ever would have- It’s why Im ultimately OK w Manfraud botching the whole situation in the first place….they can NEVER outrun their shadows and during the AS game they will have that special moment to reflect on all of it 😉

Cap & amp I also used to think that but after all the cheating with the spine rate and sticky wad they now are all cheaters. Dodger and Yankee fans have been whining about the trash can for 4 years now and now they have the most notable pitching cheaters. They all need to just go away. Dodger fans you won your 40% Championship enjoy it because for a real regular season title you aren’t winning anything.

Yep it is…. Bauer simply proved a point.

He actively told Mlb I’m going to use this substance to show this is what Cole uses. Really, he’s the reason the game is getting cleaned up. He embarrassed mlb. Hardly the biggest cheater out there. He told mlb what he’s doing before he did it! If they cleaned the game up in 2018 when SpiderTact first came out, Bauer would never have used the stuff

And the title haters are hilarious. LA was going to play in the playoffs. They were on pace for 115 wins in 162 game season. 8th straight appearance. There isn’t much doubt here. They were no sub 500 wild card.

And We all can agree last year’s playoff format was tougher than any of recent memory with fewer off days+ more rounds. So calling them illegitimate champs is a pretty big joke if you think about it without being a biased fan..

Well Darkside if you dig back into all star game lore in 2013 you’ll notice that there was A controversy… Adam Wainwright was picked to start by Mike Matheny over Clayton Kershaw. In that same year Yadier Molina was voted to start the all star game as catcher, but due to injury Buster Posey started in his place, so it only makes since that Yadi turning age 39 MIND YOU be the natural choice to replace the injured Buster Posey.

JP had been on fire and is well on his way to his second of what I expect to be numerous Gold Gloves. That being said, IKF is a special defender when you consider his versatility. But JP has done nothing but rake since he’s moved to the lead off spot. He got snubbed as far as I’m concerned

Catcher will be the first position eliminated and it will be a great time in the games history, no more stupid unwritten rule gatekeeping, low-talent hitters getting in the way of a pure pitcher/hitter matchup. No extra characters, no umps no catchers.

ok, you want to add more stats, how’s this:

          Perez
          7 time all star
          5 time gold glove winner
          3 time silver slugger winner
          world series MVP
          2020 AL comeback POY

          Narvaez
          0 all star appearances
          0 gold gloves
          0 silver sluggers
0 times to the world series

What a lame insult (“that the nerds left out”) by midknight. It amounts to “I don’t like what your objective analysis says about a player I like, so I’m just going to say your arguments are garbage without valid reason”. In truth, here is how analytics have broadly operated:
-Analyze historical full game and team results to determine what goes into helping teams win baseball games
-Analyze how individual players contribute to the elements identifying in the first step
-Quantify those contributions and develop metrics that help intuitively compare those contributions from player to player

That’s it, nothing fancy and no room for bias. The work that goes into each step is usually public knowledge and openly shared, in order to allow others to discover if an analyst is steering things in a direction of bias.

Generally, you can bet your life savings that, when a sabermetrician and someone else disagree, if there is any bias between the two it will stem much more strongly from “someone else” than the sabermetrician.

“You need to use more than 3 stats.” Meanwhile, you support your “modern world” argument by using only one stat, OPS+. Sound modern thinking there. Not saying you are incorrect, but your argument is not very strong.

BTW, why are we comparing Salvy and Narvaez since they are opposite leagues? Both could be starting catcher, there is no need for it to be one or the other.

OPS+ is an all encompassing stat. It incorporates other multiple traditional stats. It’s not perfect but it’s several stats rolled into one. It encompasses all the other stats. So, big snark fail on your part, hiflew, it just went over your head, that’s all.

I guess it’s still over your head: that one stat encompasses many other stats in one. You’re still not getting it. (And I’m not saying it’s the end all and be all but it is effectively MORE than one stat if you count, say BA as one stat and HRs as another, we’ll OPS+ has BOTH plus more.)

It is still one statistic. It doesn’t matter what goes into it. There is one output. The reason I am not getting it is because you are not making sense. Once you condense all those other stats into OPS+, it is one stat. If you cannot see that, then all hope is lost. Just have a nice day. Enjoy the pretty flowers.

So he is going to sit out 3 regular home season games, risk the AL not having the World Series Advantage, to miss one all star game? Is that what you are suggesting?

Would you want to work to get homefield advantage for the world series if you were worried about the backlash they would face during an extra game and not having homefield advantage. Being an all star that won the world series will probably add atleast a couple mil per year his contract offers and homefield advantage definitely helps. if anything the all star game will have more people talking about it being moved than the stros from years ago. If he was doing the HR derby then backed out would be different.

I agree with this. Dude literally is the covid protocol and missing actual games. Your logic is he’d rather risk his team losing a few meaningful games and having to play an extra road game (where’d he get booed like crazy) if they make the WS than play in 1-3 innings of an All-Star game in Colorado because he’d get booed for his announcement and maybe 2 at bats??? He gets booed playing away games anyways and it’s not like this all-star game is in New York or LA.

Yahoo has always been a joke.
        Overrated he has always been.
Pitch framer and “media queen” is all he is.
Simply because the entire rest of the league has had LOUSY CATCHERS during his “tenure”…does NOT make him Bill Freehan or Manny Sanguillen or Mickey Cochrane or Yogi Berra or even…John Stearns.
He is “the top of a bad crop”. No more. No less.
Looking forward to his (Albeit long-awaited I am sure) ‘I am retiring” speech.

It’s all STARS not all “guys who played good for 2 months”

Sean Murphy leads all AL catchers in WAR and he never sniffed it. Way worse than the Narvaez snub.

Yes STARS not necessarily best players.or MVPs

Also i believe there is a guy named Yasmani Grandal who actually has higher WAR than sean murphy..

I go to a restaurant with a guy named Frank that is the head chef and he is a better cooks food better than i have had at the Ramsey and Wolfgang Puck restaurants (yes not them cooking but i can only go by what i have eaten). He has a cook off on end of town and Gordon Ramsey has one at the other end who do you think has the bigger turnout Frank or Gordon?. Also STAR is subjective. Just look at this little thread you have 2 guys who is the bigger STAR with me adding a 3rd that by your own metric outweighs you STAR.

Look into the stat of WAR. It’s imperfect and often misused, but believe me, it’s a good tool to use alongside traditional stats. WAR has its quirks, but it’s useful. Win Shares is probably better but all the websites use WAR so…

That was the worst argument I’ve ever read on MLBTR. Hands-down. And food is extremely subjective to the person eating it. I wont eat eggs. I think they’re absolutely gross. But the majority of the world loves them. See, there you go. Subjective. What a horrible argument

Re-read my argument. I’m not saying WAR is the best stat, I’m saying it is what is readily available to me. What stats do you use? Cuz if it’s just things like BA, etc, well I use them too. But go ahead, what stats do you use? Lemme guess: batting average, RBIs, grit or some such nonsense…. Man, so many folks around here get snarky when they’re just misunderstanding basic logic.

People focus on the status trade, but the White Sox trade for The Shark looks worse every year.

The AL will have two representatives traded away in that deal, Semien and Bassitt. For every solid Hahn deal, there is another that went terrible sideways.

Seems like a good old school star pitcher stat line. Hmm..wonder where we might a pitcher with those exact numbers

@Baldy the game would be 1000% better if there was an all-defensive team, and all hitters were DH’s. Get rid of the catcher and umpire and do it all by laser guided strike zones. Baseball 2025 is going to be the best its ever been. Highlight reel plays every play. No more managers on the field either, no more unwritten rules, guys doing backflips and setting off fireworks after doinking a bloop to left field, celebration era baseball is whats next.

The game you watched wass trash all along. Bunch of “athletes” who would be mailmen today. Agreed. Stupid rules. Hate the automatic walk and you can’t take out the second baseman on double plays and the catcher can’t block the plate. The DH takes a lot of strategy out of the game that most people today didn’t even know existed. Now the three batter rule for pitchers to face. It’s all nonsense and hurts the game. Take me back to real baseball. Exciting baseball. The game today is not the way it was meant to be played at all.

embarrassing Giants had a bullpen game yesterday instead of Sunday. Gausman should be starting the all star game in his home town. The excuse they are in a tight race is BS, so if they were back 3 games he would pitch? If they were back 10 games he likely wouldn’t have made the team….

Kap over optimizing here, 2 innings on Tuesday does not affect his ability to pitch in the second half.

The nl w no Degrom, Woodruff and Gausman isn’t the best players this year. Either way, all players should have to attend the game or get a very significant fine.

I also still love how this game was the biggest game of the year in the regular season or how they used to have 2 all star games in one year.

Lets see, O’Neill have a .879 OPS. Machado has a .843 OPS. O’Neill have a 144 OPS+. Machado has a 136 OPS+. Even though O’Neill missed a few games on the IL, the two have the same number of homers at 15. O’Neill has no triples but has 2 more doubles then Machado. So Machado is not as Superior then what you thought he is.

The All Star game means less now to MLB players than it ever has. They should just allow MiLB players to play now.

The only issue is that many players opt out for various reasons. Just give them several days off. It’s not like the old days. The home run hitting contest is a freak show. An excuse to suck more revenue out of the folks.

Altuve for the tasty tasty W, and now gets some serious and much needed R&R. Y’all enjoy the All Star game!
