COVID Notes: 7/10/21

By Mark Polishuk | July 10, 2021 at 10:56pm CDT

The latest on coronavirus situations from around baseball…

  • Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm was removed from today’s game in the eighth inning for what manager Joe Girardi described only as reasons related to “COVID protocols.”  Officials aren’t required to provide detailed information about COVID-19 situations, and Girardi just told reporters (including NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman) that “we’ll know more as time goes on.  That’s all I can give you right now.”  It isn’t yet known if Bohm will be placed on the actual COVID-related injury list, and such a placement isn’t necessarily a sure thing — in the event of a close contact situation or perhaps an inconclusive test result, Bohm could be cleared in time for Sunday’s game with the Red Sox.  Following a very impressive 2020 rookie season, Bohm has hit a sophomore slump, hitting only .243/.298/.343 with six home runs in 329 PA this year.
  • The Yankees placed right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga on the COVID-related injury list prior to today’s game with the Astros.  Along with the placement of Miguel Andujar on the regular 10-day IL due to a left wrist strain, New York called up right-handers Albert Abreu and Brooks Kriske from Triple-A to fill the spots on the 26-man roster.  Yankees manager Aaron Boone also didn’t give specifics on Loaisiga’s status to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and other reporters, except to say that Loaisiga “feels good.”  The righty has been a force out of the Yankees’ bullpen this season, posting a 2.11 ERA, 63.9% grounder rate, an outstanding 5.5% walk rate and an above-average 25.1% strikeout rate over 47 innings.

Bohm has been really hard to watch this year.

They started allowing comments on Covid related notes to give us the opportunity to talk about only the baseball side of it.

Let’s please leave politics out of it and stick with just discussion of the specific players mentioned in the articles. That’s what we are all here for, baseball.

True, but he has hit .311 in his past 95 plate appearances so he may very well be making necessary adjustments

He’s been better of late, as have the Phillies as a whole. They have a much easier second half schedule, and have every opportunity to take the division, but the Mets are just a better team.

Once Bohm is ready to go, send him to rehab/learn how to play first base, dump “Hook em horns Hoskins” for a pine tar rag and some rosin and insert Bohm at first

Not trying to be political like most posts… last year Bohm was Mr. Clutch. This year… he appears to be sophomoric. The important part is he learns and he adjusts.

The Phillies are really playing for upset wildcard. They have offense, but there’s more gaping holes than a certain hub video.

They seem to have turned a corner offensively since Didi came back. They’re hitting really well. Even the defense seems better, but that bullpen is going to be a problem all year. Maybe this stretch is enough to convince ownership to get some help, but I don’t see them going over the luxury tax for a team that’s 4 games out. They may be stuck in limbo.

Plenty of ignorant fools who deny evidence when it is right in front of their noses. Oh well.. Darwin had a point.

Now on to baseball…. All things considered baseball had some growing pains last year but they have done a good job managing the pandemic overall.

Wow. Bohm. Nola. Brogdon. Falter. Looks like the Phillies had an outbreak. Nola was supposed to start today too. This stinks and kills a lot of their momentum.

The Yankees need to find themselves a vaccine for Altuve.

It was so perfect how his teammates ripped his shirt off after the walk-off HR showing how stupid Judge looked when he did his juvenile impression when he hit a HR. Get over it folks.

Ha. Liberals are not communists. But many Republicans approved the January 6 insurrection: that is fascism.
