Yankees Release Robinson Chirinos, Nick Goody

By Anthony Franco | July 4, 2021 at 2:19pm CDT

The Yankees have released catcher Robinson Chirinos and right-hander Nick Goody from their minor league deals, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com (Twitter link). As expected, utilityman Derek Dietrich has also been let go after triggering his opt-out clause.

Chirinos signed with the Yankees over the winter. He was hit by a pitch in Spring Training, though, fracturing his right wrist. That injury required surgery, delaying the veteran’s debut with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chirinos ultimately appeared in just thirteen games with the RailRiders. He mashed at a .278/.422/.556 clip but also struck out in 16 of his 45 plate appearances. With the Yankees catching duo of Gary Sánchez and Kyle Higashioka set, Chirinos will look for another opportunity elsewhere. The 37-year-old has appeared in parts of nine major league seasons, compiling a .231/.325/.431 line.

Goody, like Chirinos, signed with New York last offseason. It was his second stint in the organization, as the 29-year-old began his MLB career with the Yankees in 2015. The 29-year-old has pitched to a 2.86 ERA with an elite 36.5% strikeout rate and a lower than average 8.2% walk percentage with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. That wasn’t enough to earn a place in a crowded Yankee bullpen, but it should draw the attention of other clubs with more glaring relief needs. Goody has a 4.19 ERA/3.84 SIERA in parts of six big league seasons.

Goody will be unemployed for less than 24 hours. Reds, Nats, Braves, Angels need immediate help just to name a few. Cubs should have already called Chirinos’ agent.

Why the heck is Cole coming out of the game in the 4th inning????? They’re paying him a billion dollars and they take him out with the lead in the 4th?????

    Holy cow.

Probably cause he isn’t pitching very well and every game matters now, they need every win they can get or the season is over.

I think Cole will figure it out but until he does, it ain’t pretty. When he does figure it out, he needs to share his knowledge with Chapman and German.

I love the Yankees, but I have been advocating to break this group up for a month. No heart, no guts. Maybe it’s the front office, maybe it’s the players, but Judge sitting out against Ohtani, Cole coming out early against the Mets (it’s only 7 innings Britton is hurt, Chapman currently sucks and Lutge is no closer), go for the 7 inning “CG.” The Core 4 made top money for their day and would never miss (or come out of) games like that, they were gamers. Name the Yankee with the big contract (Donnie, Winfield,Reggie), they never came out of games unless they were truly injured. These players are soft, and they are coddled and weak behavior enabled by the non-baseball nerds in the front office. Hal Steinbrenner will damage this team for 5+ years if he goes over the cap this year, it’s not worth it for this group and I’ll still be a fan next year, especially with a more hungry team. They are entitled and shocked that the AL East wasn’t just given to them in 2020 and 21 because they made the ALCS in 17 and 19. Lose as much payroll as possible this month and see what you can trade for now and buy in the winter. This team is a sloppy boring dud and not worth watching, Hal, please don’t throw good money after bad money, it’s just not worth it…

I really can’t remember ever actually hating a Yankee team, @Joe. Until…a month ago? Lord. These guys, man.

Well, I’ve a huge pile of things to be burned on the grill. That seems like a lot more fun than these shenanigans.

        • Joe Says..

I agree Ducky. This roster needs some retooling. At least like when they got rid of Melky Cabrera when him and Cano were said to be bad influences on each other. Or when they got rid of Billy Martin (the player) for partying with Mickey Mantle. Definitely fire Boone and even though I like Cashman just fine, kick him further upstairs and away from direct personnel decisions. This crap can’t continue.

I’ve felt that the last couple seasons this squad has lacked serious leadership. Not the Judge/Jeter set a good example diplomatic type but an in your face I don’t care if I’m being an a-hole type. IMO Gardy filled that role but it really needs to be an offensive regular. Boone is absolutely no help on this front (and how much longer does he/management allow Chapman to meltdown before someone has the stones to close someone else or IL him?). Maybe Urshela is a possiblity other than bringing in a veteran outsider. All speculation and opinion on my part for sure.

“All speculation & opinion on my part for sure.”
          Exactly, man!

I get it. This is not supposed to be a .500 ballclub. Perhaps leadership *is* the issue. Or maybe @Clip was right & it’s the new ball being especially bad for us.

All the calls to replace Boone? Maybe!

Or maybe @mlbnyyfan is right & we just need to somehow force speed & LH hitters in the lineup damn the cost. Or maybe it’s @Joe’s “shake up” he’s been calling for since last October.

I have no idea why this team is playing so poorly. So lifelessly.

& unless you are going to rearrange some big pieces there is not much we can do: Right Now. CF & another starter are the only obvious immediate spots to upgrade. Which is maddening all on it’s own.

I remember liking this team. Pretty hard to do at the moment.

I still can’t believe that Cashman built great teams in the late 90s with a variety of ways to win a game. They had speed, contact hitters, and very few if any all or nothing hitters. Has Cashman lost his touch? I’ll just continue the watch games on Yankees classics. That was a team with a few flaws.

Cashman inherited those teams. He basically has won only one championship on his own, and they had to sign Sabathia, Teixeira and Burnett, in the same year, to make that happen.

He’s not bad, but he misfired on a few huge acquisitions (Stanton, Ellsbury).

The Yankees will not win until the Steinbrenner family sells the team and Cashman is out. He has his favorites and refuses to admit some are not good. Boone is an average manager at best. Domingo German has a loosing record and and era of 4.50. Make Sanchez a DH or trade him
