Mets Sign Zack Godley To Minors Deal

By Mark Polishuk | August 7, 2021 at 5:05pm CDT

The Mets have signed right-hander Zack Godley to a minor league contract, according to Michael Mayer of the Metsmerized website (Twitter link).  Godley had been pitching in the Indians organization on a minor league deal but was released by the team earlier this week after he enacted an opt-out clause in the contract.

The signing represents something of a full circle moment for Godley, who was initially a 50th-round draft pick for the Mets in 2009 but he decided against signing and instead attended the University of Tennessee (and was a 10th-round pick for the Cubs in 2013).  Best known for his time as a workhorse in the Diamondbacks rotation in 2017-18, Godley ran into some injury problems and has since become a journeyman, beginning with a move to Toronto after the Blue Jays claimed him off the D’Backs roster in August 2019.

Since then, Godley has pitched for the Tigers, Red Sox, Brewers, and Indians organizations, tossing 28 2/3 MLB innings with Boston in 2020 and then only 3 1/3 innings for Milwaukee this year — over those 32 frames, Godley has a 9.00 ERA and a whopping 11 homers allowed.  At the Triple-A level this season, Godley has a more respectable 4.00 ERA over 54 combined innings with the Brewers’ and Indians’ top affiliates, but he has still surrendered nine home runs.

Godley is likely little more than a depth option for the Mets, though another call to the big leagues might not be out of the question considering how New York is still dealing with some major injury absences to its regular starting rotation.  The return of Carlos Carrasco and the acquisition of Rich Hill have stabilized things to some extent, but the Mets are still awaiting Noah Syndergaard’s return from Tommy John rehab and ace Jacob deGrom’s return date is still up in the air.

Low cost depth move for the Mets. They desperately need it with all the injuries. He could replace degrom lol

At this point, it would be stupid to let DeGrom pitch again this season. This recent run of games in the division has demonstrated pretty conclusively that they’re going nowhere, and he’s already missed enough time to make it highly unlikely that he’ll win any awards. They’ve regained enough SP depth that they can at least run an actual major leaguer out there every 5th day, which is really all they need

Well, it may take an act of God to keep the Mets’ season from completely falling apart, so I hope he can live up to his name.

I’ll give you this, I’d rather see the Phillies or the Braves get curb-stomped in the NLDS than the Mets.

Playoffs is a different ballgame. Winner of the NLE plays winner of the Central. For as bad as the East has been if any team gets hot (like the Braves and Phillies are right now), they can win the NLDS, but realistically, not much further than that.

Neither one of Mets or Phillies are very good or very talented no arguments otherwise are valid! Watch the braves an their underwhelming roster win the Division as Phillies and Mets battle for first team out of the playoffs

Lol. You are quite the analyst. Getting their rough patch over?? Yeah ok. They have the 4th most difficult schedule remaining including 13 games in a row against the Dodgers and Giants. Shouldn’t be a problem for a team that can’t beat the Marlins and Phillies though.

The Brewers finishing as the top seed is possible. They are just three games behind the Giants for the best record. If the Brewers beat the Giants tonight and tomorrow, it will be down to one game. So, it’s possible for the Phillies to face the Giants, who are managed by you-know-who.

Go player by player on the Mets and Phillies roster, and I have a hard time saying the Mets are definitely better. Phillies have a much better division record as well. I don’t think people realize how much adding another starter improved the Phillies. They were going the entire season without a #4 or #5. Now, will I say the Phillies are great? No way. They aren’t. Their defense is atrocious. Their bullpen is muched improved with the addition of Kennedy, as wwll as Bradley turning a corner, but it’s still a problem. Phillies holes are bigger than the Mets holes. But I don’t think the Mets have a playoff run in them. They haven’t really been good all year. They were in first because everyone else stunk. The Phillies and Braves are winning now, and the Mets have a tough schedule. It’s going to come down to the wire. Exciting stuff.

The Mets just lost their third in a row and the first two of a three game set to the Phillies. They’re now a game and a half back of the Phillies and tied for second with the Braves.

Exactly. Phillies have Wheeler going tomorrow. Bury them so they don’t have any positive thoughts heading into Sunday. As it turned out, Kennedy was needed anyway and dominated when he finally came in.

Girardi was trying to save his over-worked pen. Got a little cute and made an easy win a bit scary by going with Llovera. When you’re up by 5, I rather see solo homers than walking people, but that was needlessly scary.

I figured that was why. Little advantages like that do mount up. I guess I just didn’t think the risk was worth it BEFORE Girardi went with him. Certainly not being judgemental though. Snitker drives me out of my mind the way he handles the bullpen.

Nah. I agree with you. This is a big series. I would’ve went with Kennedy to start the 9th. 5-0 win. Give nothing away. Every game matters. This race is going to the very last week.

I don’t miss Girardi and his cute bullpen moves. He seems to have always hated Ian Kennedy going back to his time with the Yankees. Almost blew the game last night. Hopefully the Phillies can hold on but he’s doing his best to try to ruin it.
