Mets To Sign Josh Reddick

By Anthony Franco | August 11, 2021 at 11:02pm CDT

The Mets are signing veteran outfielder Josh Reddick to a minor league contract, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (Twitter link). Reddick was released by the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Reddick signed a minors deal with the D-Backs over the winter and was selected to the big league roster in mid-May. His stint in Arizona wasn’t especially productive, though, as the left-handed hitter posted a career-worst .258/.285/.371 line over 158 plate appearances. With the last place D-Backs wanting to give a longer look to younger players on the roster, they designated Reddick for assignment last week.

Disappointing 2021 showing aside, there’s no risk for the Mets in adding Reddick on a minor league deal. The veteran has generally been a productive hitter over the course of his career, and he was a league average bat as recently as last season with the Astros. The Mets’ starting outfielders — Dominic Smith, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto — all hit left-handed, but New York’s bench is stocked with righty bats. Reddick joins Mark Payton and Khalil Lee as high minors options the Mets could call on if they’re looking to add a left-handed hitter to the outfield mix.

Because he signed before August 31, Reddick would be eligible for the Mets’ postseason roster if New York were to qualify. The Mets’ win over the Nationals — coupled with the Phillies’ likely loss to the Dodgers tonight — figures to pull them within a game of the Phils and Braves for the lead in the NL East.

Hmm. The reddick I remember could hit the ball out of RF at ANY park. If he’s DFA’d, it’s because he truly is washed up, which don’t think myself he is. Look him up.. The guy hit 30+ for Oakland 1 year and not with the juiced baseball, like a certain 1b the mets have

I applaud your fan loyalty to the player, but that was 9 years ago and the only season he hit more than 20 HR.

HR aren’t everything anyway. His best year was 2017 when he hit 13 HR and had a 130 OPS+ and .314 BA. In that park, a guy hitting the gaps for average could play better than a HR hitter with a low average.

Zero Mets position players would start for the Dodgers, whose fans aren’t whining about being without Mookie Betts, Justin Turner, Clayton Kershaw, and Dustin May. No excuses. Just win.

By the way, how did the Mets do last week against the horrible Marlins?

I think Javier Baez, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso would start for the Dodgers.

Those are some of the best players in baseball, they would find a way to fit them in the lineup.

Hmm…This year, Seager/Trea Turner are better than Baez/Lindor and Muncy would start over Alonso.

So no, the Mets have no position players that would start on a healthy Dodgers team in 2021, platoons notwithstanding.

If you want to argue rotation, then a healthy DeGrom starts displaces a healthy May or Gonsolin, as would a healthy Carrasco. Of course, none of those guys on either team is healthy, so it’s a moot point.

Those guys would not start over Corey Seager, Trea Turner and Max Muncy. Stop overrating Alonso. In fewer plate appearances, he trails Muncy in every statistical category by home runs (24-23). Muncy is also a better defense 1B who also plays an excellent 2B and decent 3B. There is no real case for Alonso over Muncy (or Lindor/Baez over Seager/Turner).

Alonso would start over Muncy if they didn’t have either of the Turner’s, or if both were hurt (Muncy at 2B or 3B, Alonso at first).

Lindor is a fine player,. but not the kind you invest $341 million in. I’ve often posted on this forum how much I value defense. However, that kind of money should go to the type of hitter who can be THE guy in your lineup. A hitter who has a ripple effect that makes the rest of the lineup better. The Mets don’t have that kind of player. What they have is a bunch of complimentary hitters who would feel off such a player. If they had a Betts, Freeman, Harper, or Machado type, their offense would be more productive. Instead, they have a bunch of players trying to be that guy when none of them are. As a result, they start chasing and getting themselves out. For long stretches, they become easy to pitch to. And by stretches, I mean several games as opposed to several innings.

Offensively, they don’t have a defining strength. Runs scored, doubles, triples, steals, total bases, drawing walks, OPS — they are at or near the bottom in almost everything. They are on pace to break the single-season record for sacrifice flies (they have 12, the record is 19). Not a major category, but another example of how they don’t do the little things to create funs. They hit plenty of flies balls; just not when they really need one.

But the Dodgers do have those players. And it doesn’t change the fact that Muncy is a better player than Alonso in every way conceivable. Fewer plate appearances, but more run scored, hits, doubles, triples, and walks, fewer strikeouts, and a better BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS. Muncy is second in the league to Tatis in offensive WAR. At this point, he is a top-five MVP candidate, maybe top three. Muncy has more grit than Alonso. He seldom chases. Nor does he get himself out like Alonso frequently does.

A healthy Dodgers team means no room for Alonso. Why in the world would you start Alonso over Muncy?

Yup, Bellinger has been bad for over a year now, but I’d still take him over any of Nimmo/Conforto/Smith just based on the potential that he can return to MVP form. And Bellinger does seem to breaking out of his lump over the last couple of weeks, as you will hopefully see firsthand this weekend.

Mcniel would be a tie with Turner

The players you would take are why the Mets have a 162-game average of 77-85 over the past four years.

Alonso and McNeil aren’t on the same level as Muncy and either Turner. Seager is flat-out a better hitter than Lindor,. which the Mets would need because they’re near the bottom in every significant offensive category. Seager would instantly become the best hitter on the team. Also, you’d be hard-pressed to name a better defensive outfielder than Bellinger (maybe his teammates Betts). He was a gem at 1B before moving to the outfield.

Alot of teams could use their injured players…That’s why depth is so important for playoff contending teams!!

The Braves could definitely use Acuña Jr., Soroka, Tucker Davidson, and a healthy Ynoa for this stretch too..

I told you it was only a matter of time before the Braves caught the Mets, even with all their injuries and the Braves terrible start to the season…

Mets should have buried them when they had the chance!! Either way though, it’s going to be one heck of a race to see who wins in the end, and don’t discount the Phighting Phills either..

None of the East teams are good enough to snatched up one of the wild card spots, so it will have to be Division Title or BUST for these three squads!!

Also, I cannot believe freaking BRAD MILLER has almost single-handedly got the Phillies into first place for the moment!?! Lol

He wasn’t particularly productive offensively with the Astros apart for his first season (which was the best offensive season of his career) with them. The other three seasons were below league average and he had 3 of his 4 worst offensive seasons (prior to this year with Arizona) since becoming a full time player when he was in Houston. The Astros’ scandal aside, his bat was already declining.

You have to blame the players, hitting coach aside). I watch Brandon Drury bat and watch him hit the ball where it is pitched. If he needs to hit a fly ball his approach is to do that. If all he needs is a single and the pitch is low and on the outside, he goes with the pitch and sends it between the first and second basemen. Look at Alonso and Conforto. More LOBs than their teammates per plate appearance because i see no adjustment in their approach. People complain that Runs Scored or Runs Batted In are lame statistics, and maybe Left On Base is too. But it seems that just looking at the old school stats shows that these Mets do not or cannot “situationally hit”.. Alonso should be ashamed he wins the Horne Run Derby but hits the way he does in games. I still maintain David Wright got so
messed up by participating in the Home Run Derby and was never the same hitter. Runs count! It doesn’t matter if they came in by a single, a home run, or just hitting to the right side with a runner on third and less than two outs.

I like this move. Reddick is a better hitter and fielder than Conforto. I don’t care what advance stats you try to convince me with. Id prefer Drury over Conforto but our manager for some reason has an infatuation with Conforto and refuses to put Drury in the lineup even though hes been our best hitter the past 3 weeks

Mets are simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

They are sinking fast and won’t survive the next 2 weeks of 13 Straight Games vs. Dodgers & Giants. LOL

And Carlos Beltran borrowed Bobby Valentine’s disguise so he can give the signals.

I’m completely ok with giving him a minors deal to see what he can do, but maybe they thought they were getting JJ and were expecting him to get some good looks from 3.

Was originally thinking he would take the AAA assignment if Arizona didn’t release him….so this is a nice alternative for him.

Small risk high reward potential. If the excitement of New York reinvigorates him for the last part of the season great, if not scrapheap. Would like to see one last hurrah from this guy though.
