Noah Syndergaard Tests Positive For COVID-19

By Darragh McDonald | August 29, 2021 at 11:32pm CDT

Noah Syndergaard has tested positive for COVID-19, per several reporters, including Tim Healey of Newsday Sports. The righty was scheduled to make a rehab appearance today as he continues his arduous journey back to the big leagues, which he hasn’t seen in almost two years. Instead, it will be yet another setback in a year full of them for Syndergaard.

Since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of 2020, it’s been nothing but stops and starts for Thor in 2021. He initially started a rehab stint in May but was shut down after just two starts due to elbow inflammation. He then began a second rehab stint on Thursday, throwing just one inning, with the aim of returning as a reliever since there’s no longer enough time in the season to get properly stretched out as a starter. Now he will have to put everything on pause again due to this positive test.

This is yet another disappointment in a month full of them for the Mets. After leading the NL East for much of the season, they’ve gone 7-19 in August and now find themselves 7 1/2 games behind the Braves, with the Phillies in between them. They were already facing a difficult decision with Syndergaard, given that he’s approaching free agency and is a candidate for a qualifying offer. If healthy, he is a potential top-of-rotation starter and certainly worth the money. But the club will have to judge his health based on whatever small sample of work he can produce in the dwindling number of remaining games. With yet another setback, the sample they will use to make that decision has now gotten even smaller.

For a healthy person, they are a lot lower than that. Plus the stats are inflated. My 91 year old uncle caught Covid, went to the hospital, was released, went home and died two weeks later. He had cancer and it was logged as a Covid death.

This a horrible, deadly, virus, and it’s bad. But those numbers are inflated, I don’t know what they are, and we don’t know how bad it really is.

For every person like your uncle, there’s some who died at home from covid without ever been diagnosed. You are correct that we won’t know the actual numbers, but they’re not inflated, if anything they’re underreported.

I’m vaccinated, I wear N95 masks, I limit my contacts. We can all do little things to help. But this isn’t as bad as they make it sound and death tolls are exaggerated.

That said, this can still mutate again into something more deadly. We should all do everything we can to prevent the spread and stop this from becoming even more deadly.

It’s not it’s authoritarian governments on a power trip. If it was really about health then they would be advocating for people to eat healthy and exercise. No one with connected brain cells measured the death rate per the total number of the population. So no the death rate is not .002. The total number of confirmed cases is short of 40 million. The number of deaths is over 650,000. So we’ll over 1.5%.

And, that does not take into consideration the number of persons who have, and will suffer, permanent, and in many cases, debilitating injuries/conditions.

And doctors do stress weight loss and healthy lifestyles. Look 45 is ob3se. Doesn’t exercise. You don’t think he knows better?

Like, a team being cursed is usually ALL about not making the playoffs, if not that then always losing in the playoffs and never reaching the WS. What team has ever been called cursed that consistently makes the playoffs, or doesnt have long championship droughts? Gotta love when people try to cry stupid when there understanding of the matter is at best slightly off.

Syndergaard is awesome when he plays. Had an off season in ‘19 but that might have had to do with injury. Don’t sell him short. I get it, a lot of Met fans pegged him as literally the best pitcher in baseball. (Every GM knows he has the best stuff in all of MLB- is one sentiment I’ve seen bandied about without the slightest sense of hyperbole, or evidence for that matter). I get it. I get the pushback against absurd exaggeration. But he’s a great pitcher when healthy.

He’s a talent, but the window for fulfilling potential is closing fast. His good pitching has never sustained itself to where any team fears him as a frontline pitcher. At the most, he’s been just another #2 that teams don’t fear, and your own team worries which Syndergaard shows up. We’ve seen many guys like that in MLB history. If he wasn’t in NY, he’d be looked on just like all of those other ones in the past.

Okay, I’ll play devil’s advocate. Say he puts things together, where is the impact, if the same thing happens with the pitchers in the division who are more talented than him? How about the ones that have the same stuff, but are more refined and developed at younger ages?

lmao excuses? Aren’t you the same guy who was using excuses about your bullpen for why the Marlins have been terrible? Essentially, ‘if we were better, we’d be better’? And the same guy who was talking trash all offseason but once the Marlins stumbled, switched your tune to ‘every game they win is just gravy’, in year like 17 of their rebuild?

I understand why you’re obsessed with the Mets considering the Marlins have been unwatchable for almost two decades, but give the hating a rest for once, please. You’re a fan of one of the most embarrassing franchises in sports and yet all you do is trash the Mets.

@Cosmo2 I said the same exact thing about Wheeler and Syndergaard when the Phillies signed Wheeler. The usual suspects laughed at it and called Wheelee a glorified number 3 at best. Their comments did not age well. Wheeler has evolved into an ace, as I said he would. Completely agree that Thor is a number 2 with ace potential.

Whoever gets Thor will be very happy, I think. He just ran out of time this year, but with a normal off-season, he’s going to come back strong.

He is not “quite young”. He is 29 with a long injury history (30 innings in 2017 and zero games in 2020 and none so far this year).

Who knows if he will totally recover from his TJ surgery. While most do, man do not.

Even if he is able to come back, there is no way to know if he will be an effective hurler. Particularly, with the ban on foreign substances.

Even if he comes back, with him being a “middle aged” pitcher (in baseball terms), and with his history of injuries, a legitimate concern is when, not if, he will break down once again. For the Mets it would likely be a 19 million gamble if he returns in 2022.

A good pitcher, never a great pitcher, when healthy. Unreliable. A number 3 (due to unreliability and injury history).

Cosmo greatness is not measured over just one or two seasons. It is over a career. Someone who is 29 , has missed three seasons, and, only pitched more than 200 innings one time, is good. Not great.

And a 5 WAR is very good not great. He is not, as you claimed above, in various posts “great” when he pitches, nor “quite young” (your words). If you keep changing the goalposts you undoubtedly will be accurate at some time.

Very good. Unreliable. Major injury history. Not young.

Would you risk injury and your financial future for an organization that has zero chances at making the playoffs? I would rather keep in shape in my own controlled environment and showcase for clubs in the offseason than put myself at potential hazard in meaningless minor or even major games. Just my take.

@at Dockellis. Just remember though, keepin shape in own controlled work environment is what started this catastrophe in the first place. His own private work outs and weight lifting lead to the shoulder injuries which, in turn, probably lead to more sliders and the injury which required TJS. He cost himself 2 years with his own workouts.

Excellent point. Idk, you’d hope he’s learned to revise his routine to focus more on endurance than strength, but he could very well be like Stanton and stubbornly keep trying to bench and deadlift as much as he can. I just think it would be tragically typical if he suffered a major injury pitching in a meaningless September game trying to hit triple digits or snapping his ACL trying to cover first.

Having watched Syndergaard since he arrived, I’m telling you there is something missing in his mental preparation or approach. I’ve seen enough interviews with him, watched his interactions and seen him make guest appearances on sitcoms to know not all his t’s get crossed or i’s get dotted just right. And I’m not trying to come off as insulting him or judging him, but rather wonder if there isn’t some aspect of autism or Aspbergers Syndrome that affects his decision making.

Obviously, the talent is incredible, but what about the development or adaptation to his additional years and changing (aging) body? He’s never been one that seems to put in the work to better himself (holding runners on, developing a change up, having a plan on his own for specific hitters, etc) and has gone as far as blaming his catcher (Ramos) for his failures.

I coached a player with Aspbergers Syndrome for about 8 years who dominated her sport at every level. Let me tell you, there was zero getting her to think outside her level of comfort or altering what SHE wanted to do, WHEN she wanted to do it. I truly do believe it’s time to move on from Syndergaard before locking in to a long term future with him as his physical skills diminish. I say this because I believe he will be incapable and unwilling to adapt as he ages.

He’s probably offered and accepts the QO; it becomes a kind of pillow contract. If I were him and the Mets I’d try and work out some kind of two year deal. He probably won’t be himself next year anyway; year two he can rebuild his value.

I wouldn’t be too quick to guarantee anything from Lindor. There is one thing a lot of people are not looking at with his struggles this year versus his career.

In the AL Central, for the bulk of his career, the best pitchers in the division were on his own team, while the other teams had various levels of struggling for the most part. In the NL East, the majority of the best pitchers are not on his team as all of his division rivals have good pitchers. It’s not as easy for him playing in the NL East as it was in the AL Central.

They need a mini-housecleaning. I know some of it is injuries, but it feels like they have a team of moving parts. Conforto has to go, if only because Nimmo should be the FT RF, so they can finally get a real CF. And you might not need 3 lefty outfielders.

And is Almora still with the team? And as a follow-up question, why? Has he always been a poor backup to Pillar, who himself was a #4 OF?

        @mlbnyyfan

I think the Mets should resign Stroman, Loup, Pillar and Villar. Let everyone else walk.

Mets need to sign healthy arms, get their pitching depth ready in the minors, and then look hard and long at their hitters going forward.

McNeil – real deal or flash?
Smith – was 2020 a fluke against mediocre pitching for 60 games?
Davis – Is he an every day player?
Lindor – production has tailed off for two+ seasons now.
Conforto – the potential has been there in flashes all along. When does he put it together for good?
Nimmo – when he’s on the field he is a table setter. Is he ever going to play enough to make a difference?

Or was the firing of Chili Davis one of the worst moves in recent history? Honestly, every single hitter he mentored has been in a tailspin while adhering to ‘the binder’ and relying on data and saber metrics. Pete has been the only hitter capable of beating shifts.

        Off season moves:
        1 get rid of Rojas
2 bring back Chili. Keep the other two around if you want, but Davis had the players producing.
3 banish the current training staff and get restraining orders to keep them away from our players
4 sign enough pitching to make Stroman our #3 again. I think Walker has just run out of gas and hopefully he rebounds next year for 30 healthy starts as our 4. Megill looks like a solid #5 IF he avoids TJS.

…I think deGrom being hurt is going to be more common than not simply due to age, mph and sliders.

Bottom line, we need three more Stromans and some kind of new hitting philosophy against starting pitching and with men on base.

With a minimum 10 day IL stay required with about 30 games left, he has once again handcuffed his team when they could really use him.

He has been useless to the Mets since his goal was to be the hardest thrower in baseball instead of making his goal 32 starts. I truly do hope they move on from him and let some other team guarantee him 4 years/80 million.

Thank you both for clarifying that he had been vaccinated. I’ll rescind that aspect of my post. But I’ll still stand behind the rest of it. I also wonder if maybe, just maybe there are other factors involved.

Just how stupid was it for Syndergaard to announce that he wouldn’t be throwing any sliders? Hello, McFly, maybe keep other teams from knowing that? Maybe was also reluctant to pitch out of the bullpen? I’m sure I’m his mind, he is a starter only. His coming back and pitching out of the ‘pen had zero benefit to HIM and only additional risk of injury or setting back his recovery. All these factors would result in a smaller contract next year.

He will refuse the Mets QO, take the off season to work out and prolong his recovery, then hold showcases in the spring before his agent locks him into a 5 year deal. As a Mets fan, I hope we pass.

Lol come on man. It’s just a cold, 99.7% can survive this one. Just put some dirt on it and play ball.

The severity of this “covid” is overblown and it’s hilariously sad that people are this scared of something they can survive and they actually thought by getting vaccinated, they will not get the coof ever again. Oh wait, they still can, b-but their chances of surviving the coof is better than the unvaxxed.

This is truly a clown world we live in and we’re getting the entertainment from the vaccinated Covidiots lol.

Thanks for the endless laughter! And with that, HONK HONK!!!

LOL! I’m a do-as-I-please kind of guy who virtually never considers health risks. But there is no reason to not get the shot. I’m also a RW-C, and I think these governors ranting against the vaccine are complete idiots. The Biden admin is inept that we have a wide-open election in 2022, ripe for an overwhelmingly RW victory.

But these guys have to shut up about Covid. No one in the middle agrees with them.

That said, I am curious, and non-judgemental about why you wouldn’t get the shot?

People die it’s a fact of life but for the vast majority of people they won’t. It is a 0.175 chance of death. How we have responded to COVID is unheard of for any other disease many of which are far deadlier.

No more like a 1.5% chance of death and that does not include many who have/will suffer permanent injuries or medical conditions.

Well, my aunt just passed away this last weekend after contracting COVID, so it’s not “just a cold” to me.

Feel like a one year deal back with the Mets makes sense. If the QO is still a thing, he definitely receives and accepts it.

Man… Any of you old guys out there remember the character from the L’il Abner comic strip named Joe Btfsplk? Gotta wonder if he was re-incarnated into Syndergaard…

I came for the comedy and I am not let down! A thread about a guy who may get to pitch about 10-20 innings turned into the Marlins Fan again boasting about Mets misfortune because his team is awful and in last place AGAIN. They NEVER won a division title in their existence and until they spend money on actual position talent, they will never do so. They are the best argument for contraction I have ever seen! Loser franchise. Oh, wait, there is also the two idiots claiming not getting vaccinated is being a “wuss”? You are a sheep if you trust a vaccine that is proven to be ineffective!!!! Every athlete that has tested positive has been vaccinated!!! Why get an experimental vaccine that does not work? Oh my god, this site is plagued with idiots.

Maybe you haven’t been paying attention. Marlins are on the rise. Two years from now they’ll be a contender.

Noah might not want to take a one year contract. He should hold out for lesser upfront and multiyears. Say 4 years at $60m. He might get that.
