Royals’ Moore On 2022 Outlook, Top Prospects, Mondesi

By Steve Adams | August 4, 2021 at 8:45pm CDT

The 2021 season hasn’t gone as the Royals hoped, but general manager Dayton Moore made clear in a recent appearance on 610 AM’s Fescoe in the Morning Show that he still considers his club to be in a win-now mindset and will aim to put together a contending roster for the 2022 season (full audio link to the 18-minute interview).

Moore acknowledged being “extremely disappointed” with the team’s record this season, particularly given that the front office “all felt [the roster] would compete.” That said, Moore didn’t sound like an executive who was gearing up to make sweeping changes in the offseason. While the Royals will certainly look to add in various places — Moore listed the bullpen, in particular — the organization also expects a great deal of improvement from within.

“When I look at our team, there’s not a ton that you’re going to need to do, at least on paper,” said Moore. “…We expect some of our young starters to continue to evolve and get better. We’re going to hopefully be able to transition a position player or two into this lineup next year. We’re going to get a little bit younger, we’re going to have a little more speed on this team. … We’re going to be disciplined with what we do, but we’re going to rely on young players that are going to come up and be better.”

The Royals have an enviable crop of young starting pitching, as Moore referenced. Each of Brady Singer, Daniel Lynch, Jackson Kowar and Kris Bubic has been ranked as a top-100 prospect at some point in recent years, and all four have gotten their feet wet in the big leagues already. Kansas City also has last summer’s No. 4 overall draft pick, lefty Asa Lacy, working his way through the system. Command has been an issue for Lacy thus far in Class-A Advanced, but he’s also fanned a third of his opponents through 52 frames. Twenty-one-year-old Angel Zerpa breezed through Class-A Advanced, meanwhile, before running into some early struggles in his first Double-A action.

Of course, the mention of “transitioning a position player or two” into the lineup seems like a clear reference to uber-prospect Bobby Witt Jr., the No. 2 overall pick from the 2019 draft who has emerged as one of baseball’s brightest prospects. But Moore is also surely referencing another former first-round pick, first baseman Nick Pratto.

Both Witt and Pratto have laid waste to Double-A and Triple-A pitching alike in 2021. Witt, 21, posted a .295/.369/.570 slash with 16 homers and 14 steals in 61 Double-A games before jumping to Triple-A and hitting .283/.328/.550 through his first 13 games. Pratto delivered similar dominance at the plate in Double-A (.271/.404/.570 in 61 games) before jumping to Triple-A at the same time. Like Witt, he hasn’t missed a beat in Omaha, raking at a .271/.379/.646 clip so far.

It’s always possible that the Royals will call on one or both promising youngsters by season’s end, although Moore spoke of exercising patience with each prospect after the scratched 2020 season and an abbreviated run through the minors so far in ’21. Asked specifically about the duo, Moore simply suggested that both need to “keep doing what they’re doing” and accrue more experience in the top minor league level of the system. That said, Moore also suggested that once players are promoted to Triple-A, “they really have an opportunity to force your hand.”

Perhaps most interestingly g of all from Moore, however, was his surprisingly candid assessment of oft-injured shortstop Adalberto Mondesi. While Moore emphasized that the club feels Mondesi is still a part of its future, he also acknowledged that Mondesi may not be the everyday cornerstone the team once envisioned.

“No, you can’t,” Moore candidly replied when asked if the team could count on Mondesi as an everyday player. “We love Mondy to death. … I think when we put this team together, we look at it like, ’Holy cow, if Mondy’s healthy, and he’s a part of the team, it’s going to be really exciting and really impactful in a lot of different ways: defensively, offensively, speed-wise.’ There’s a lot he can do.

“But I think we’re learning that we’re going to have to manage his workload. He may not be a guy that plays more than 100 games a year, best-case scenario. Hopefully he exceeds that expectation, but as somebody who’s responsible for putting together a 26-man roster, we’ve got to look at ways to supplement and perhaps be more balanced, if he’s not a part of it. If he is, that’s great. We’re certainly not going to release him. We’re going to continue to stay with him, obviously. But we’ve got to make sure we put that roster together in ways that protect us. … We can’t, obviously, count on him as an everyday player.”

It’s rare to see a GM speak with such candor about someone who’s long been viewed as a key player. Of course, those comments aren’t any sort of indication that the team plans to move on from Mondesi, nor should we necessarily expect Kansas City to spend significantly on a middle-infield upgrade over the winter. The Royals also have a shortstop-capable infielder in Nicky Lopez, and the aforementioned Witt Jr. has played all of his professional games so far at shortstop, save for eight appearances at the hot corner in 2021. Perhaps the Royals will deem it worthwhile to add a solid utilityman who can deepen the bench and help cover some games at the shortstop position as needed. Based on Moore’s comments, that very role could eventually be one in which Mondesi finds himself — an oft-used but also oft-rested player who can fill in at multiple spots around the diamond.

Mondesi aside, the broader takeaway from Moore’s comments are that while the 2021 season hasn’t gone as hoped, the club remains committed to putting a winner on the field as soon as 2022. That likely points to another offseason of some modest additions in free agency and via trade, as the Royals continue to wait on the emergence of their next core group.

They gotta call up BWJ and Pratto asap and let them develop together down the stretch. Sounds like Mondesi and Santana are on the trade table this winter. Can’t play Witt and Mondesi together anyway.

santana either moves to DH once pratto is up or he’s traded (talking this winter for trade). probably depends on september call ups…we can only expand to 28 and if pratto is one, you need to find consistent at bats for him.

as for mondesi….he could move to dh if we don’t have santana there.

And if you give all of the other GM’s the small salary cap that DM has to work with every year, how many of them would succeed??? I GUARANTEE you that the Yankees, Padres, Astros, Dodgers GM’s would SUCK with the salary limit that Dayton Moore has to work with each year!!!

They had a decent team with a lot of potential, and yes that could have been a .500 roster. Along with the top pitching prospects and in a weak division, they had potential

The AL Central will be recognized as the best division in MLB within the next 2-3 years, and will remain that for at least 2-3 more.

Everyone but the Twins has a good amount of young talent on their ML roster with more to come.

I wrote in the next 2-3 years. Dodgers and Giants will be good, For sure the Padres will have major luxury tax and cap problems even before then…along with disgruntled players.

By the way – keep an eye on the 2nd wild card this year. Reds are closing on the Padres, in spite of the Reds bullpen. If Derek Johnson can get a couple of those guys straightened out, that should get them over the hump. Padres GM and players are darlings of the media and casual fans that don’t watch the games and realize that the Padres cannot play baseball on a winning level……and their road uniforms look like a 4 year-old’s pajamas.

Just because you “wrote” it doesn’t make it true. Nor a sound argument, @sam.

In the AL, you have the East. NY, Bos, & Tor are all well run big market clubs that spend. Tampa Bay will continue to do Tampa Bay stuff. To “predict” this division will somehow become a bastion of weak teams strikes me as hopeful/naive. Hell, even Baltimore has something going on & has been known to spend.

The AL West is a much more up & coming division than is the Central. Oakland is always competitive. Houston seems like they have a few more years. Texas & Seattle are coming on. One day the Angels may address their pitching.

          So.
I write: the AL the Central will continue to provide the weakest champ & no wild card teams for most of the next decade.

Bet mine turns out more accurate.

Their situation is bad because last year they finished 6 games out in a 60 game season and this season they are on pace to finish 10+ games out – and these are their peak seasons. It’s just too tough a division, they have maxed out their $$$ and emptied out their minor league depth. The reality is that they will likely be playing for the puncher’s chance of the Wild Card game for a long time.

But no regrets; it was good stuff, good people. We were all very idealistic; thought we could solve the world’s problems through rational discourse (lottsa luck with that).. The degree was useful for advanced academia or law school, neither of which was affordable. And several of my department mates went onto religious careers, and were very happy with that.

He does a pretty good job with what he’s got. He’s maintained a very good fanbase playing in that wonderful park. KC’s a different type of franchise than many others, and he responds well.

Bingo @bob… KC is a different ran organization. Especially now with John Sherman over that grimy David Glass.

All Royal fans have heard this all before in 2013 and 2014. Do I need to remind everyone what happened then?

As far as Dayton Moore, the man does what he needs to do with what he has been given. Now that Mr. Glass is finally out of town, things have gotten better. Having John Sherman and his group has been a breath of fresh air then recent years but Sherman has not been given alot with the pandemic like circumstances. When normalcy is back, I would like to see what Sherman’s group does.

Why rush Pratto and Witt Jr now, there is no shot to make the playoffs. Wait for September, then give them their cup of tea. They will get their time next season when there is a good chance that these young pitchers will have that experience they need. The biggest thing the Royals need is that Adam Wainwright type of player that can show these young royal arms how to prepare for their starts and what to do on their off days. That’s the big splash Dayton needs to make this offseason(along with some bullpen help).

Mondesi needs to look into remaking his body like Vlad did. That is his biggest issue. There is working out and then there is working out your body right. Sometimes people don’t understand that.

I appreciate this rare attempt by GMDM at candor – makes you wonder if Sherman said he needed to be more open – cause up to this point, he’s looked like Herbert Hoover.

And much like Hoover’s FBI, the Royals organization has consistently shown itself to be very resistant to change. Over the last 5 years, we’ve watched them resist the shift despite clear evidence it worked.. We’ve seen them pick fights with individuals (Tim Anderson) because they didn’t like how that player enjoyed the game. For years, they stuck to a 5-man rotation with a 3-man back-end, even when they didn’t have 5 or 3 who could cut it. They’ve resigned their aging veterans because they were “their guys” despite those veterans having little to nothing left. They fought transactions and held onto players despite clear evidence it wasn’t the right move – because change is a bad thing. And they staunchly argued their process with no sustained demonstratable success. 16 years, 3 winning seasons, and the worst wins record in baseball.

I am pleased to see some of our draft picks working out. It’s been a while since that was the case. Most of our drafts have resulted in little to nothing – and what did – was traded off. The Lynch – Bubic – Kowar – Singer draft may end up the best in Royals history. I am disappointed that the Royals have since veered from this draft model of taking college level pitchers early and often. By taking college pitchers, the Royals were building a stockpile at the MOST important position on the field – from which – they could be more transactional. But they seem to have back-tracked.. I’m glad Witt Jr. and Pratto are developing – and Lacy was a good pick – but this most recent draft looks to me to be more of the same philosophy from GMDM instead of a transactional approach. It’ll be years before we know if that works out – but I have my doubts.

I watch every Royals game and a lot of our AAA, AA, both A games. I personally think we need to deal Santana (eat his contract), deal Dozier, deal Taylor, deal O’hearn, deal Oliveares, deal Gallager
My thinking here is we need more bats in our line up, may as well bring up the young studs. Melendez could even be trained for another position he is a hot bat! We need batting! which leads to offense!

    Promote
MJ Melendez (C), Bobby Witt Jr (3B), Nick Pratto (1B), Kyle Isbel (OF), Tyler Gentry (OF)

The Royals are set on pitching for a while to come with it’s young staff coming into it’s own.
I do think they need to resign Santana (P), Holland (P), I don’t know the status of these guys but they need ro keep Barlow (P), Zimmer (P), Staumont (P), Brentz (P), Payamps (P), Taypia (P). Get rid of Zuber (P), Davis (P)

Hopefully Asa Lacy gets his command under control and that will give us yet another young arm!
We will have a great team. GO ROYALS!
