Twins Release Matt Shoemaker

By Anthony Franco | August 3, 2021 at 4:32pm CDT

The Twins released right-hander Matt Shoemaker this afternoon, manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters (including Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune). Minnesota had already passed Shoemaker through outright waivers earlier this season, so the move won’t clear up a 40-man roster spot.

Minnesota signed Shoemaker to a one-year, $2MM deal over the winter in hopes of stabilizing the final spot in the rotation. The union didn’t pan out, as the veteran tossed 60 1/3 innings of 8.06 ERA/5.41 SIERA ball before being designated for assignment in early July. It was a nightmarish campaign for Shoemaker, who posted a career-worst 14.1% strikeout rate and served up fifteen home runs in sixteen appearances.

To his credit, Shoemaker has tossed 20 innings of four-run ball since accepting an assignment to Triple-A St. Paul. With the Twins expected to use the final few months of their lost season to take a look at younger, controllable arms, it nevertheless made sense to move on. Shoemaker will now get to explore other opportunities, and he’ll presumably latch on somewhere via minor league deal with a chance to pitch himself back to the big leagues down the stretch.

I just looked him up on Savant.
His raw stuff says he really shouldn’t suck. What’s the deal with The Cobbler, @Halo11?

I ask this as the fan of a team that recently lost their two best staters to Covid & because I mostly associate him with the Angels.

      Merci.

Also: thus far, Heaney hasn’t been very much fun.

He was a good #3 with the Jays and had times where he was a number 1 with the halos. His biggest problem are injuries but the craziest thing is they are freak injuries. He was doing great with the Jays and blew out his ACL while he had a player in a run down. Things like that seem to be what Heald him back

What I am seeing at B-Ref, Savant, & hearing from you is: Good Stuff, doesn’t take the mound enough, though.
          Oui?

          So maybe a couple starts?

As a youngster, I recall my Dad used to take our shoes to a Shoemaker with a shop on 7 St in St. Paul, MN. It was between Arcade and Johnson Pkwy. Maybe it is still equipped and available so Matt can step right in and start it up again??

At least he’s got the shoe business to fall back on. When BalDeli get fired he’ll face too much competition from Subway and Jimmy’s Johns

All he had to do was have a conversation with the team about “the Twins way” instead of discussing that with the media and he would probably be back on the big league roster. At any rate… good riddance.

So the Twins totally screwing up not one but two proven winners in Happ and Shoemaker with their obviously deficient metrics nonsense is the fault of the players?
I’d say the good riddance should be directed toward Falvine. Exactly what have the boy wonders done to improve the team, outside of what was already in the organization when they arrived?

I’m not arguing that the Twins way should be defended at all. Just saying that some stuff should be kept in house. I for one, believe they are too reliant on analytics and it has been proven to not work for them.

That being said it’s quite possible Shoemaker did have that convo with Twins brass and got told to stick it so he went the media route after.

Well if this is the end of the line, he will always have a trade to fall back on.

Well low risk high reward opportunity that did not work out. Seems the story of many 2021 Twins.

This feels like the perfect article to give a special mention to the old San Francisco Giants pitcher, Atlee Hammaker.

My opinion: the Twins were in a need of a cheap starter to begin the season and Shoemaker was available. I think the Twins plans for the rotation included Randy Dobnak & Devin Smeltzer but both placed on 60-day IL with significant injuries.
