Diamondbacks Promote Seth Beer

By Anthony Franco | September 10, 2021 at 4:54pm CDT

4:54 pm: The team has officially announced Beer’s promotion. Infielder Drew Ellis was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

3:21 pm: The Diamondbacks are planning to select first base prospect Seth Beer to make his major league debut during this weekend’s series against the Mariners, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Arizona already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster after releasing righty Seth Frankoff earlier in the week.

Beer was a first-round pick of the Astros back in 2018. The left-handed hitter had a monstrous three-year run at Clemson leading up to the draft, and he’s continued to mash in pro ball. Beer has hit well at every minor league level over the past couple seasons, with that success continuing after he was traded to Arizona in July 2019 as part of the Zack Greinke blockbuster. (The three other players Arizona acquired — utilityman Josh Rojas and right-handers J.B. Bukauskas and Corbin Martin — have also reached the majors).

After spending last season at the D-Backs’ alternate training site, Beer was assigned to Triple-A Reno this year. Over 435 plate appearances there, the 24-year-old owns a .287/.398/.511 line with sixteen home runs. Those numbers are aided by a hitter-friendly environment, but Beer’s production still checks in twenty-six percentage points above the Triple-A West league average. Coupled with his previous track record of success, there’s little left for Beer to prove against minor league arms.

Despite his draft pedigree, Beer isn’t regarded as an elite prospect due to concerns about his limited defensive value. Baseball America slotted him seventeenth in the Arizona system on their midseason update, praising his offensive acumen while questioning whether Beer could develop into even a serviceable defender at first base. Many expect the National League to adopt the designated hitter in 2022 as part of the next round of collective bargaining negotiations, and few would seemingly stand to benefit more from a potential NL DH than Beer.

The Diamondbacks would have had to add Beer to the 40-man roster this offseason or else risk losing him in the Rule 5 draft. They’ll get an early look at a potential long-term option as they play out the string on a terrible year. Beer could seemingly take some playing time from the struggling Christian Walker, who has hit just .234/.308/.356 in 373 trips to the plate.

I honestly don’t understand why it took so long. He is almost 25 plus for service time it makes no difference whether it was may 1st or September 1st.

So why not call him up earlier when he was performing in AAA and give him more experience at the mlb level so hopefully he can already make some adjustments to be ready to go in 2022?

A .909 OPS in the PCL and Reno is fine, but not something to write home about.

Beer is a DH, because his defence at 1B isn’t great. Hence he is called up for this series against the Mariners so he can get a look and sniff the MLB. Right now he only has a roster spot if they decide to cut Walker or if the DH arrives at the NL. Both Walker and Pavin Smith are better defenders at 1B.

Beer’ll get some AB but probably ends up in Reno again since the season in AAA runs through September and he can get regular reps there. His SO% has gone down this season so that is definitely a good thing.

His 909 OPS is 16th best in all of AAA. I think it’s something to write home about.

That’s fine, but maybe, if you are not familiar with that league, perhaps you can take a look at the 2019 PCL batting leaders too to have a bit more context.

And I actually don’t see what you wrote. If you look on Baseball-reference the league leaders list in OPS don’t reflect your statement.

These are the actual league stats. They have a West Coast and East Coast league. I looked at both costs OPS leaders. For the Beers west coast, he is actually no.11

I can’t believe Beer was only drafted in 2018. It seems like he’s been talked about as a prospect for the last 5+ seasons. I’m glad to see him get his first chance at the major league level. He got lucky when he was traded by Houston as he would still be blocked on that team. Beer has a chance over the next 3+ weeks to prove that he belongs in the majors and if so, it should really help his chances of making the Diamondbacks roster out of spring training next season. I’m not sure why it took Arizona this long to promote him but he needs to take advantage of this opportunity for sure. Hopefully, they play him every night for the rest of the season.

Brendan Rodgers for Colorado was guy for me. I remember rumors of Abreu getting dealt around the same time as Sale, and Brendan Rodgers was only a year away from the Majors back then…that was 2017.

30 HBP??? I’m all for crowding the plate once in awhile, but once you get above 20, that has to be considered cheating of some kind, especially when you’re wearing body armor like Barry Bonds. Hopefully MLB umps won’t stand for that and have him stand back in the box. I completely abide by sabermetrics and algorithms like the next soulless robot on here, but even then he should get on base more often by hits or walks.

The umpires cant tell batters where to stand. If he’s inside the batters box and gets hit, it’s a HBP. Unless he leans into it, then that’s a different story.

In memory of the late Tom T Hall:

I like Beer, he makes me a jolly good fellow
I like Beer, he helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow .
Whiskey’s too rough, Champagne costs too much, Vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I LOVE Beer.
