Dodgers Shut Down Danny Duffy After Injury Setback

By Mark Polishuk | September 11, 2021 at 11:03pm CDT

Left-hander Danny Duffy suffered a setback while throwing a bullpen session on Friday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told The Los Angeles Times’ Mike DiGiovanna (Twitter links) and other reporters.  The setback is related to Duffy’s left elbow, which is a particularly ominous sign considering that a flexor strain has kept Duffy from pitching since July 16.

As a result, the Dodgers have shut Duffy down from throwing.  According to Roberts, “it doesn’t look great” that Duffy will pitch again in 2021: “Outside of any type of miracle, for him to impact us this year, it’s going to be tough.”

Despite Duffy’s injury, the Dodgers still acquired the southpaw from the Royals in a trade on July 29.  The thought at the time was that Duffy would be able to pitch by mid-to-late August, though Duffy’s move to the 60-day injured list on August 9 pushed that timetable back to September 18 (based on Duffy’s initial IL placement when he was still a Royal).

This is Duffy’s second IL trip due to a flexor strain this season, with his first absence lasting close to five weeks.  It was already looking like Duffy might be used as a multi-inning reliever rather than as a starter for Los Angeles, given the lack of time remaining to get Duffy’s arm strength fully ramped up for starting work.  Even if Duffy get healthy enough to resume throwing and the Dodgers did extend their season with a lengthy run into the postseason, it would seem far-fetched that L.A. would devote a postseason roster spot to a pitcher coming off such a long absence.

Since Duffy’s contract is up after the season, it is quite possible his Los Angeles tenure will end without an official pitch thrown in Dodger Blue.  Duffy had control over his trade deadline destiny due to his 10-and-5 rights, and the Southern California native chose to accept a deal to return close to home and chase another World Series ring.  The Dodgers only gave up a player to be named later in exchange for Duffy (the Royals kicked in money to cover the approximate $5.4MM remaining in the lefty’s 2021 salary), so the trade ultimately goes down as something of a missed opportunity, rather than a true misfire on the Dodgers’ part.

These elbow injuries will also very likely have an impact on Duffy’s free agent market, particularly if he has to eventually undergo some kind of procedure to correct his elbow issues.  Between the injuries, Duffy had a 2.51 ERA over 61 innings with the Royals this season, though his advanced metrics weren’t impressive.

Did anybody else buy Danny Duffy and Cole Hamels Dodgers jerseys, or just me?

I’m gutted by this news, so please send me your thoughts, prayers, and condolences. After self-diagnosing myself on the internet and becoming somewhat of an expert, I’m lactose intolerant, vegan, or something weird (maybe the gluten one). I forget which one, since it was a quick quiz, but I CANNOT consume thoughts and prayers without condolences.

Looks like Duffy has a chance still to be a lifetime Royal since he won’t appear in a game with the Dodgers.

So, the Dodgers still have to give something up despite him never throwing one pitch, I wonder what level of prospect they will have to send over.

They traded for him knowing full well he was injured. Even if Dayton Moore and the Royals end up with nothing but a lotto ticket they still made out better than the Dodgers in this deal

I’m curious on how the nuances of PTBNL deals often work out.

Typically the acquiring team submits a list of players for the trading team to choose from. Most PTBNL are lower level minor leaguers or players that are not likely to be protected in rhe rule V draft. I can recall one instance in which the PTBNL was a major leaguer; after the 1995 season the Reds sent Infielder Mark Lewis to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade that sent David Wells to the Reds during the season. Lewis would replace the retiring Lou Whitaker as the Tigers Second Baseman in 1996

Assuming the FO can get a handle on the extent of the injury maybe they bring him back on a specially tailored contract. He was brought up a Dodger fan (he said so). He’d be returning back home. Again only if there is a reasonable likelihood he will be healthy.

Well, this seemed inevitable. The Friedman Fan Club probably still thinks this and the Hamels signing were good moves.

lol what a dumb comment that only a dodger “fan” would make. not every franchise can shell out prospects, even low end unknowns, for guys that will never even throw a pitch

its prolly going to be a few thousand. he was dealt while dealing with a significant injury – usually such trades are conditional on health, and a guy missing most of the time usually sees just cash go back.

I mean they took a shot, and it failed. Generally it’s conditional. And in terms of saying not every team can do it is inaccurate. Especially with so many minor league teams getting cut. I don’t think people realize that dependent upon how many draft picks were signed a good amount of guys are going to be released come seasons end. So teams already have a somewhat clear grasp of that. Can every team do it? Yes the can especially if we’re discussing cash and players that they already view as being out the door.

Every team has prospects. It’s not the Dodgers fault that other teams don’t know what to do with them. They don’t get to draft more than others.

The point being, even if both of them worked out perfectly neither was never going to address the immediate need for starting pitching, and the chance that either of them was going to work out was small. When a team has a deficiency and it isn’t fixed, that hurts.

They weren’t bad. Nothing was really lost except money ( Hamels) and some low-level long-shot prospect (Duffy).

They were no risk moves. Not good or bad. What did it cost them? A 40 man spot for a few days and cash is pretty insignificant.

It cost them not fixing the problem, and before anyone asks they would have been better off trading for a couple of journeyman starters to patch the holes in the rotation.

They traded for a player who is garnering “best deadline acquisition ever?” headlines. Pretty strange to dwell on not adding depth pieces when they got the two best players moved at the deadline. Contrary to what you think, the bullpen is very good. It hasn’t cost them a game in a very long time. Even not having a fully healthy rotation hasn’t hurt them. It’s the offense.

@BlueSkies….You’re the one always railing in lovely hindsight omniscience about the LAD FO. Earlier in the season it was the bullpen, but you’re understandably quiet on that now.

For me, I concluded your judgement was suspect when your criticism of Joe Davis was essentially, “he’s no Vin Scully!”

I never responded as I was a bit dumbfounded at the time. No one can ever replace Vin, he is most likely the best sports announcer in American history. It’s offensive to compare Joe and Vin.

Pardon the tangential rant, but felt it was necessary to point out that BlueSkies is ostensibly Bill Plashke on MLBTR.

Always ranting on how he thinks things should be indignant retrospective arrogance.

Perhaps due to my well-balanced diet, I much prefer that name over AJ Preller.

Autocorrect indicates that Preller is a mistake and Prolly is not. I don’t know what type of diet upon which Autocorrect subsists, but it agrees with me and thus so should you.
