Mets Activate Brandon Nimmo From Injured List

By Anthony Franco | September 17, 2021 at 5:02pm CDT

The Mets announced they’ve reinstated center fielder Brandon Nimmo from the 10-day injured list before this evening’s game against the Phillies. Reliever Jake Reed was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

Nimmo returns after missing just under two weeks with a right hamstring strain. At the time he went down, the club was still above .500 and within three and a half games of the division-leading Braves. They’ve gone just 3-7 in the ten games since, falling five and a half back of Atlanta and five games behind the Cardinals in the Wild Card race. Their playoff odds, in FanGraphs’ estimation, have dipped from 10.2% to 1.9% in the process, as it’s probably too late for Nimmo to make a meaningful contribution in a postseason push.

The team’s disappointing season hasn’t been the fault of Nimmo, who has continued to excel when healthy. Always one of the game’s best at drawing walks and reaching base, the left-handed hitter owns a .302/.420/.415 line with five home runs over 320 plate appearances. Nimmo doesn’t hit for much power, but he’s one of just five hitters with 300+ plate appearances and an on-base percentage north of .400 (Juan Soto, Bryce Harper, Yasmani Grandal and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being the others).

In an additional roster move, the Mets activated righty Jordan Yamamoto from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Syracuse. Doing so required opening space on the 40-man roster, so New York recalled minor league lefty Thomas Szapucki and placed him on the major league 60-day IL. Szapucki, who is out for the year after undergoing ulnar nerve transposition surgery in mid-July, will receive big league pay and service time for the season’s final few weeks.

Haha. This didn’t age well. Still two games left though. One of the only reasons the Phillies are still alive is because they handled the division pretty well, owning the best-indivision record. The Mets actually played the Phillies pretty close this year though. Series record is currently 9-8 Phillies with just two games left.

If the Mets miss the playoffs by 2-3 games…. The other teams should be embarrassed

DeGrom is a great pitcher, but he can’t stay healthy. Acura is a more significant asset and the Braves have a solid lead in the division without him. The Mets simply are not that good, with or without their ace, and the NL East is just a mediocre division at best. Reality is right in front of you, all you have to do is accept it.

It’s funny how people think that acuna and Degrom were the two only injures fo each team

The Cards-Pads series this weekend may weigh in heavily going forward. I am just stating the obvious but it is an interesting series.

Likely won’t make too much of a difference, who knows. But the Dodgers, Gigantes and Brewers look overpowering.

@dodger1958 I agree, but as recently as 2 seasons ago the Nats got hot at the right time and beat times clearly better than them to win the World Series. A Wild Card team can do that. Unlikely? Yes of course. But it happens.

…and in a corresponding move the Mets have placed Brandon Nimmo back on the IL merely on the assumption that he’s headed back there anyway.

Is Nimmo an elite player, clearly no. Is he a valuable piece to a team that needs to get guys on base to score runs, absolutely. A table setter, to use an antiquated term. Can the rest of the Mets drive in runs, No. Conforto has been terrible Dom Smith can’t do it, and Pete Alonso swings for the fences so much that he forgets it’s not the pitcher from the Home Run Derby on the mound. McNeil who used to being some spark has only recently had some “stir the drink” moments to liven thinfs uo

Things….. can correct from a phone, sorry. The Mets do not deserve to be in the playoffs. No playoff team should ever go 4 for 32 with runners in scoring position for 3 games against a team they need to catch, like they did against the Cardinals. Again, 4 for 32 with runners in scoring position. Nuff Said.

Nimmo will never be healthy enough to be an every day long term option for any team in any capacity. The dude can get on base but what good is it when you’re constantly looking for a soft place to land?

At this point, the Mets should consider cutting an underperforming bullpen arm and let Yamamoto have the last few weeks. Not like he’d be any worse than Familia.

I don’t believe in this team, owner, manager, management and I’m sick of being the team everyone laughs at and makes fun of. The Mets are constantly doing everything wrong, when does it end ? I’m also sick of this fake Mets fan on this site, honestly stop commenting you look like such a clown and at this point everyone think you’re a troll because all you have is bad takes and excuses. Steve Cohen can have all the money in the world but does it matter if he can’t spend it right ? If you haven’t checked it out yet go to Reddit and look at the thread of all the LOL METS stuff over the years, this team is such a joke every year but us mets fans always pour our heart into the team, rant over.
