Phillies Designate Enyel De Los Santos

By Mark Polishuk | September 12, 2021 at 10:41am CDT

The Phillies announced that right-hander Enyel De Los Santos has been designated for assignment.  The move creates roster space for catcher Andrew Knapp’s activation off the COVID-related injury list, and catcher Rafael Marchan has also been optioned to Triple-A.

De Los Santos has been shuttled up and down between the Phillies’ roster and Triple-A Lehigh Valley multiple times this season, with the righty posting a 6.75 ERA and a strong 30.7% strikeout rate over 28 innings out of Philadelphia’s bullpen.  While his strikeout totals have increased by leaps and bounds this season at both the MLB and minor league levels, home runs have continued to plague De Los Santos in the big leagues.  Since the start of the 2019 season, De Los Santos has allowed 11 homers in only 39 innings pitched for the Phils.

This marks the second time in as many seasons that the Phillies have designated De Los Santos, and he was able to clear waivers last year before being outrighted off the 40-man roster.  De Los Santos is only 25 years old, so another team might be interested in taking a late-season flier to bring him into their organization, particularly with his improved strikeout numbers.  De Los Santos whiffed 66 of 184 batters faced in Triple-A and the majors this season, good for a very impressive 35.9% strikeout rate.

I remember when some Padres fans were livid he was traded for Freddy Galvis. Just shows some prospects are just suspects. I was happy to get Freddy at the time.

Well maybe Padres can claim him and fix him. Worth a shot.

IIRC the issue people had was with trading any prospect at all (even one who was probably overrated like Enyel de los Santos) for a one year rental when the Padres were in the middle of a rebuild. Someday some rebuilding team is going to trade a C-level prospect for a one year rental, you are going to scream about how prospects are just suspects and then that rental will leave after one year and that prospect will go on to become a perennial All Star. Padres fans breathe a collective sigh of relief that it didn’t happen THIS time.

Enyel would be an interesting project for the Pirates.

I’m too lazy to look but is it possible he gave up a run in every one of his appearances?

He stinks. He can’t keep the ball in the yard. Gives up too many HRs

The thing about Phillies bullpen castaways, is that they aren’t always terrible. They’re just terrible for the Phillies. It’s interesting how pitchers just come here to fall apart. Some make it out. Hopefully De Los Santos gets his groove back, but man he looked bad.

Knapp has had a bad year this year. Not sure if he’s an upgrade over Marchan.

I’m thinking they let Knapp go after the season since he’s arb eligible, Marchan definitely seems like the better option.

Are you kidding Marchan is 10x better than Knappy as Gabe called him.Knapp is a typical Philly farmhand he daady played with someone in the organization and they drafted him because he is part of the Family.Stop this family crap and get some players that can play and have heart not someone whose daddy was a roomate with someone in the organization in the minors.

It’s amazing how loyal the Phillies are to Knapp. Marchan looks like a more promising hitter — especially if JT is going to spend more time at 1st base in years to come.

Marchan batted under .200 in the minors this year. Great glove but no bat.

The offense has been so bad team-wide outside of Harper. Need to cleam house.

Hoskins and Segura have been pretty good. We can dream on Vierling. And Wheeler can hit. Otherwise……

Hoskins injury was huge. Segura had an amazing first half, but really cooled off. Stoll one of the best we got thiugj.

So true. Do they have a team rule that the batters ahead of Harper must not be on base when he goes to bat? How many of his HRs have been with no one on? It’s like working a walk is a finable offense to this team.

It’s staggering how few opportunities he had to hit with runners on. It’s insane that a team with a legit MVP canidate, and a starter who will receive some CY Young votes, is such a mess. It’s because the stars are unbelievably good, but everyone surrounding them is unbelievably awful. The offense failed them this year. Pitching woes are there, but when it mattered, no one hit except Harper.

I’m with you on that. They are going to waste Harper’s best years by surrounding him with average to below average players. He might get so frustrated that a few years from now on, he pushes for a trade. And I wouldn’t blame him. Him and Wheeler seem to be the only gamers out there.

Yup. They were for awhile, but they like to tease. They’ll win a few more for some false hope, but they’ll get swept by the Pirates or something. Team is painful to watch. They either over perform or under perform. They’re never just decent.

No surprises at all, especially when the manager seems like a real life Captain Dunsel on four out of every five nights.

You do realize that Captain “Dunsel” Kirk got the last laugh over Richard Daystrom and the M5 computer, right? Girardi, however, is no James T. Kirk.

Every time Enyel was called in from the pen it felt like the game was lost already. And Andrew Knapp may be a good guy in the clubhouse but he sure sucks as a player. The Phillies are a mediocre team and looks like they will be that way for years to come.

This team flat out stinks I said all along cannot win with heartless players and a mgr who can’t handle a pitching staff let alone a bad pitching staff.Realmuto signing was a huge mistake we will have to live with for awhile.Time to rebuild Bryce will be screaming to get out at the end of the season and request a trade.Wheeler will bring some nice pieces and
maybe we can get a bag of balls for our BIG DUMMY Nola he needs to go.Rhys Hopkins should be traded and will bring some decent young players since he is coming off a good season.A new Manager and some good young players ready for the Bigs and in a few years we will be a winning team again.
