White Sox Place Brian Goodwin On 10-Day Injured List

By TC Zencka | September 26, 2021 at 10:58am CDT

The White Sox placed outfielder Brian Goodwin on the 10-day injured list with lower back spasms and recalled righty Matt Foster to take his roster spot, per the team.

Goodwin has played all three outfield positions for the White Sox and served as a valuable fill-in at times. On the whole, Goodwin’s .221/.319/.374 line across 271 plate appearances hardly inspires much confidence heading into the postseason, however. It’s not clear if Goodwin was going to earn a roster spot for the playoffs, but he’s likely out of the running now. Chicago has Billy Hamilton, Adam Engel, and Leury Garcia on the roster capable of backing up the starters in the outfield.

Foster can help keep arms fresh in the final week before the playoffs. With their playoff spot locked, the White Sox can use the next week to align their roster for a first round match-up with the Astros.

What happened to Yermin Mercedes?!?!?!? He had a hot start and had a cold streak, but still batted .271, which is better than Goodwin, Sheets, Garcia, Hamilton, Collins, etc. He can be legit DH and can catch (Collins and Seby are horrid, cant get worse).

Yermin has played in minor in 10 days and shows inactive. I can’t find any news on him. You need Yermin’s bat, he can easily hit .280 average.

Yermin had been hitting .275 with 11 Home Runs at AAA. Eloy, Abreu, Vaughn, and Sheets have made it pointless to bring him back as a DH. I think the next time we see Mercedes in the MLB it will be with a team other than the White Sox

That makes no sense. He is a catcher, he is a better option than bust Collins and Seby, they are both considered horrible catchers based on stats (and im not even talking about the bat). Yermin can back up Grandal. Also, Yermin has better numbers than Sheets, Goodwin, Hamilton, Garcia, Vaughn, etc. Makes no sense to not have him in the line up. I just dont understand White Sox putting bunch of guys who hit under .220 over Yermin.

I’m guessing that if Yermin were even close to as good behind the plate as Collins and Seby, Yermin would definitely be backing up Grandal. The fact that he can’t make it out of AAA as bad as Seby and Collins are offensively tells you all you need to know about Yermin’s abilities as C. Does Yermin even play C in AAA, or is he strictly DH?

He plays catcher in minors. Ive been following this guy for 2 years. He had better numbers than Luis Roberts in minors last year. I dont understand why he is not given a proper chance. Let him catch and see, seby and collins are rated bottom in league in catching. Also, yermin can DH and play 1st.

Yermin was hitting .271 when he was demoted, he was getting back in the groove after the slump but he was demoted over jake lamp, mendick, goodwin, hamilton, sheets, etc…makes no sense. Why is Sheets getting starts when he’s hitting .227 and plays DH and first which Yermin can also do.

I feel Tony doesn’t like Yermin. What a tragedy. Yermin was rookie of the month, a slump is common for rookies and he was hitting good at .271. Such a shame, i feel so bad for him

Yes. He plays catcher, DH, and 1st in minors. I honestly thought he was going to be Grandal’s backup and play DH this year after an amazing minor league performance. He may not be the best catcher but he is definitely better than collins and seby, they both were given plenty of opportunities, not just this year but last also, they are total busts and horrible catchers according to stats and horrible batters.

He’s more of a “catcher” than an actual catcher. At the MLB level he’s a DH only and they have no need for another one of those.

Also, stop quoting only batting average as a measure of who is the best hitter unless you have a time machine to 1982.

Yermin hits better than half the starters.

    Sheets .227
    Goodwin .221
    Collins (total bust) .204
Vaughn (i like him but) .238
    Seby .183
Hernandez .222 (heck ill put Burger at 2nd)

Makes no sense Yermin and Burger are not in lineup. Burger can goto 2b and yermin DH, catch, and even 1st base when Abreu.

Maybe I’m just splitting hairs here, but I wouldn’t say Goodwin’s out of the running for a playoff spot, depending on the severity of the back spasms. He’s eligible to be off the IL just before Game 1.

It might not matter anyway, he might be the odd man out if they decide to go with Hamilton and Sheets as the OF’s or Hamilton and 14 P’s (Leury can handle an OF spot if absolutely necessary) or even if they for whatever reason wanted to carry 3 C’s on the roster.

It boggles my mind why goodwin and hamilton are on team when they are hitting .222. This also includes seby and collins. They are automatic outs, especially in playoffs against stud pitchers they cant hit for anything.

I could see why Hamilton would be on the postseason roster, being a pinch runner and/or late inning defensive replacement. And I could even see a case for Goodwin, he had some very clutch hits that led to wins this year.

I’m not saying that justifies having either on the roster, I’m just saying I can see the argument for having either/both on the roster.

But your point is very well taken. The last thing you want in the playoffs are easy outs in the lineup, and since the Sox lineup has been so feast and famine all year, it makes that point all that much more important.

Using Hamilton in playoffs to pinch hit against stud pitching? Or to pinch run in game tying or game winning situations? Or as a defensive substitute for far inferior Jimenez/Vaughn? Hamilton has lots of value to a playoff team… just not as a starting player or pinch hitter

Yermin came late to a game. Yermin totally disobeyed and disrespected the game and his manager by swinging at a 3-0 pitch when up 11 runs. Yermin said he didn’t care and that’s “what Yermin does.”

    This is old news.

Tony LaRussa is the manager of the White Sox. Yermin Mercedes will never, ever play again for a Tony LaRussa team. Tony LaRussa is trying to win a championship not let players do what they want.

I would put Mercedes DH. No one is more qualified. My line up.

          1) Tim SS
          2) Yoan 3b
          3) Luis CF
          4) Abreu 1B
          5) Eloy LF
          6) Grandal Catcher
          7) Yermin DH
          8) Vaughn RF
          9) Burger 2b (Burger plays 3rd and can play 2b, Cesar hits .221, that won’t work. Burger hit .263 as a new rookie, he has potential). After Madrigal trade they should move Burger to 2b. Or Moncada can move to 2b and Burger 3b).

Now that’s a deadly line up. No .220 hitters.

You seem to have a strange attachment to Mercedes. It was fun while it lasted but you gotta move on. The bigger concern for this team is the inconsistent offense. I’m a life long Sox fan and want them to do well in the playoffs but hitting every other day will not get you very far. They’ve had a nice season and I hope they can find a way to turn it on but it’s hard to be even cautiously optimistic.

I am attached because he hit .271 with power when he was called up. Why discard a player when he was hitting .271 as a rookie? Who knows what his potential can be, He has the 3rd highest batting average on the team after Tim and Luis. That’s why I don’t understand the demotion and his disappearance. As a Sox fan I don’t understand why his bat is not in the lineup.

How about before he was sent down when he announced he wanted to be in the Home Run Derby. He’s a head case who will never again play for the Sox.

The problem is like what the Red Sox went through for years with Manny Ramirez, you can handle “Manny being Manny” when he’s hitting .320+ with 35+ Home Runs and driving in 120+ runs per season and even that got old and reached a boiling point. Manny was a borderline Hall of Famer. Yermin was a 28 year old career minor leaguer who had one good month at the ML level and thought he was a superstar. Maybe he gets away with that if Rick Renteria was still the Manager but not with Tony LaRussa. LaRussa has managed superstars and wouldn’t put up with it from them, let alone a AAAA player.

I think Yermin will get a chance somewhere to show whether or not he was a flash in the pan but i don’t think it’ll be with the White Sox

The Yerminator cut his own throat. Yes, he was a joy to watch when he was doing well. Then he was publicly talking about feeling he deserves to be in the HR contest at the All Star Game. That was the beginning of the end for him. He was a 28 year old rookie. If he was so good, he would have been up on a big league club long before then. Let’s remember, he was not solely with the Chisox organization. So then, he couldn’t hit anything and the Sox demote him. And what is the first thing he does? He quits baseball and disappears. Yeah, that is the kind of guy I want on my team. As far as I am concerned….good riddance. Now the Yerminator is publicly talking about going to Japan and playing. I say bon voyage…and good luck with your attitude overseas.

Go watch him in Japan or back in the Mexican league. He will NEVER be on a major league roster ever again. He ruined it for himself. I don’t care if you think he should be given another chance. Face it, the White Sox are toast. Sub .500 team since the AS break. The starting pitching has been suspect at best for months now. The offense has zero plate discipline and can’t score runs against half-way decent pitching. Sure, Luis Robert has been hot lately. But no playoff pitcher worth his salt will throw Robert a strike, which means his slugging will plummet. I give them a 12% shot to advance against Houston in the playoffs, and it pains me to say that. It really is a shame how a team with this much talent on paper can be so mediocre and suspect. Defies all logic.

On top of that they traded Madrigal such makes no sense. He hardly strikes out, plate discipline, and was hitting above .300. We would’ve had an amazing infield for years.

The biggest problem with white sox is the bottom 3-4 batters are hitting around .220. Hence i dont understand yermin demotion and madrigal trade (he wouldve been solid next year).

Trading Madrigal makes perfect sense when you’re trying to win a WS… he won’t be playing till next year…the issue with that trade is replacing him with a better than average option at 2B for 2021… Hernandez doesn’t seem to be that guy, and I don’t see any free agent or minor league options for next season… Madrigal will be greatly missed until the White Sox can fill that position on the roster with quality
