Jerry Remy Passes Away

By Mark Polishuk | October 31, 2021 at 9:54am CDT

Longtime Red Sox broadcaster and former player Jerry Remy passed away yesterday at age 68, as first reported by WCVB-TV Boston.  Remy had been battling lung cancer for over a decade, and in August stepped away from his announcing duties for further treatment.  Even during his most recent health issues, Remy made it to Fenway Park to throw out the first pitch prior to this year’s AL wild card game, a 6-2 Red Sox victory over the Yankees.

Remy has been the voice of Red Sox games on NESN since 1988, becoming a beloved figure in New England (in fact, fans even voted Remy as the ceremonial president of Red Sox Nation back in 2007).  In addition to his broadcasting work, Remy has also authored several books on baseball, as well as five children’s books starring Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster as the main character.

A native of Fall River, Massachusetts, Remy broke into baseball as a player, spending his first three seasons with the Angels before the Red Sox acquired him in a December 1977 trade.  Now playing for his local team, Remy reached the AL All-Star team in 1978, and went on to play seven seasons in Boston, becoming a fan favorite that extended into his work in the NESN booth.  Remy played 1154 games during his 10 years in the big leagues, with knee injuries hampering his ability to stay on the field in the last half of his career.

We at MLBTR pass our condolences onto Remy’s family, loved ones, and many fans around the baseball world.

He and Orsillo were the best tandem duo I ever heard calling a game. He’ll be missed by true fans everywhere, it’s just a shame there wasn’t one last WS for him this year.

Red Sox Nation will miss him, but at least his suffering is over and he once again feels like his prime.

Fun Remy story – a friend of mine played for the 77 Angels and on a day off some of the younger players would hit the beach, do young guy beach things and occasionally accept challenges from other guys for a game of frisbee football. My friend, a pitcher, says he could throw a frisbee about a hundred yards on a line and Remy was more than lightening fast, so they’d team up to crush anyone/everyone basically, leaving the opponents completely befuddled. The kicker being that none of the opponents clued in that they were playing against Angels and the Angel players never let on…

Remy was a fine second baseman for the Angels and Red Sox before he hurt his knee.I thought that he had a chance to really become one of the very best before then,
I attended my only game at Fenway in 1981 and saw him jogging alone along the outfield track well before the game started.I felt bad for him because this was after his injury and I think that it really affected his ability, especially running ability. All those years of practicing and in one moment a very good player’s career can become mediocre.
Rest In Peace Jerry Remy.I am sure that you made Red Sox fans proud.

There was one where the broadcast team had a Boston-raised Hollywood actor in the booth. The man looked to be in his late-30’s / early 40’s. He had recently gotten married and introduced his 22-23 year-old wife. In response to a polite question about how things were working out, the actor respond with: “She still has that new wife smell”.

For 1-1/2 – 2 innings after the couple left, Remy was unable to finish a sentence. He kept trying, but would burst into laughter and lean away from the microphone. Often Orsillo would start laughing as well

I never heard anything like that, and loved Remy for it. He was simply human with an honest sense of humor, as opposed to the fake pal-buddy-buddy phoney ribbing that goes on by sports announcers on telecasts.

The politically correct Red Sox broadcasts after Orsillo was forced out were bad – Remy had to tone it down. When he wasn’t on it was like they say about shopping malls – you can be in one in the outskirts of Boston, Ann Arbor, Dallas or San Bernadino…..they’re all the same.

Idea for NESN if you’re reading/listening. Please put together a DVD or download DVD filled with his funny moments over the years. Have all profits go to Cancer research, to The Jimmy Fund or to another charity of the family’s choosing. it will sell out in a heartbeat. A download option is not even too late for this holiday season,. Charge a reasonable premium given the times while remembering the funds will go to charity. I myself would buy multiple copies to give as gifts.

He could slap the ball all around the diamond and was outstanding with the glove. And I didn’t get too many chances to hear him as a broadcaster but I thoroughly enjoyed Jerry when I did, his enthusiasm was contagious and he didn’t talk down to his audience. What was interesting about Kiner was how little he talked about himself or hitting. One of the greatest home run hitters ever. Every so often he’d get down to brass tacks on Kiner’s Korner and you got a taste of his knowledge. Definitely not a dumb jock.

Rest In Peace, Rem-Dawg. No matter how good or bad the Red Sox were in a given season, Jerry Remy made it must watch tv. He was one of the most knowledgeable analysts in all of baseball. He had his chance to become a national broadcaster a few times but he turned it down, wanting to stay close to home and close to his family. He was a true Red Sox and Boston legend. He fought his illness with everything he had. He was on the field 3 weeks ago, throwing out the first pitch of the ALCS while being that sick; that sums up all you need to know about him and his passion for the game and for the Red Sox organization.

I know he doesn’t qualify under Red Sox rules to have his number retired, but I really hope they build a statue or memorial of him outside of Fenway. He certainly deserves it. My condolences to the Remy family, Don Orsillo, The Eck, Tom Caren, Jim Rice, Tim Wakefield and all the others at NESN who had the pleasure working alongside of Jerry for all those years. A very sad day in Red Sox Nation for sure. RIP my friend.

Remy was vocally against “Wally” until he saw Wally bringing smiles to kids faces one day during a pre-game event at Fenway. Several times each year — even this year- he would say on the air that he was wrong about Wally. That’s a real man.

If there was a blowout on the field he had great stories. One night with the game out of hand, he and Eck talked about late night visits to “Daisy Buchanan’s” and “Studio 54” after games. He loved having the players from the “Legends Box” as in game guests.

Doesn’t matter that the team had Brunch (a great second baseman), the trade turned out to be a steal because Aase couldn’t stay healthy. if he had, the trade would have been great for both teams. Aase had talent coming up with Bob Stanley and Mike Paxton (who was part of the trade for Eckersley).

As a life long Sox fan living in Maryland, Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo were my portal to the team. They were THE best play by play partnership for baseball that I’ve ever seen – they would occasionally root for the home team but were more than fair when giving due to other teams. I’ll never forget Remy falling head over heels doing air guitar and, of course, HERE COMES THE PIZZA! I saw that moment live, as it happened, and it was amazing, It’s the best broadcasting moment of all time TO ME because of how pure it was – both of them giggling like children. It was wonderful, it was fun, it was everything that baseball should be. And Remy embodied that. You will be missed, RemDawg. <3

Don Zimmer, two other Famous Red Sox players, and Jerry Remy were sitting at a table in a restaurant having dinner in Boston. I was a young kid, holding a ball, waiting patiently. I was a shy kid. but also raised with manners.
They saw me, but turned away and kept talking… except Jerry Remy who looked at me, smiled, and waved me over.
He signed the ball, and then passed it around making the other 3 sign it, too..

Jerry Remy was NEVER to big for a fan, especially a kid.

    REST IN PEACE REMDAWG!
