Brewers To Extend GM Matt Arnold

By Steve Adams | October 27, 2021 at 1:02pm CDT

1:02pm: MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that Arnold is not only staying with the Brewers organization but signing a contract extension (Twitter link). With Stearns signed through at least 2022 and reportedly having an option for the 2023 season, it seems as though the Arnold extension will maintain some continuity for at least the next couple of seasons.

10:36am: Brewers general manager Matt Arnold has withdrawn his name from the Mets’ search for a new president of baseball operations, tweets Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Arnold will remain with the Brewers.

Reports yesterday began connecting the Mets and Arnold, albeit in somewhat conflicting fashion. While the New York Post’s Mike Puma indicated the two sides had been in contact, SNY’s Andy Martino reported that the Brewers had yet to grant permission to interview Arnold. Whatever the case, it seems largely moot at this point, with Arnold now set to remain in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future.

The Mets have been prominently tied to at least six different executives as they search for a new baseball operations leader, but to this point it appears as though they’ve been spurned across the board. The initial trio of Theo Epstein, Brewers president David Stearns and A’s executive vice president Billy Beane somewhat predictably did not bear fruit; all three had good reason to be viewed as long shots at best. Epstein noted last year when stepping down from the Cubs that he wanted to spend time away from a baseball ops role, while both Stearns and Beane were under contract with their current teams. The Brewers had also denied the Mets permission to speak to Stearns a year ago.

Moving past that trio, the Mets have since been tied to Arnold, Giants GM Scott Harris and Dodgers assistant general manager Brandon Gomes, but they’ll need to further broaden their search. Harris, like Arnold, withdrew his name from the mix, whereas Gomes is reportedly set for a promotion within his current organization. The Mets have also been tied Dodgers senior vice president Josh Byrnes — the former GM of the Padres and D-backs — and other candidates figure to emerge as the search wears on for a second consecutive offseason.

Mets baffling decision to publicly come out and say you’re going after these high profile names was a unnecessary pr risk. If you strikeout on them, like they did the fans now will claim they settled.

I’ve said this prior to at least 5 candidates turning down the spot, but Cohen with his outspoken social media posts, has made the Mets job one of the least sought after. Guys that are highly sought after don’t have to settle for a position where they’ll have to answer for owner who can’t shut up.

      What a mess…….

Brian Sabean, his manager Bruce Bochy and fan favorites such as Buck Showalter have simply not adapted to how MLB is being played since around 2010. It’s complicated – support staffs have ballooned as there is great research done on every player teams have in their systems and on their roster, as well as in their system. Furthermore, with video and computers, teams FO’s can keep track of literally every player in in professional baseball, as well as many in college and high school. Maximizing every players skills and fitting them into a role on the ML team is what it’s all about.

I’ve defended Cohen and Alderson. But not getting Arnold is it for me.

NYC sports fans think George Steinbrenner was wonderful, and just want to Yankees and Mets to spend, spend, spend – because they don’t understand baseball and they want a bunch of high-priced bullies to run roughshod over opponents. That hasn’t worked for a long time. Managers, FO people and players got fed up working for George, and left. He finally won when he left the FO people and the manager alone.

FO people, managers and coaches throughout MLB are now quite bright. They have enough pressure on them 24/7/210-plus. Many of those people actually enjoy working in small and medium sized markets where they can enjoy their jobs, their co-workers, and their children can be brought up not to be arrogant, egotistical, enabled, and self-centered.

Cohen got jobbed by Lindor’s agents – only a matter of time before he / they demand a trade (that’s the way the NBA does it – players sign huge long-term contracts then complain that they’re unhappy). NYC is not a great place to work in professional sports. Cohen will get the Steinbrenner treatment until he relents. What the Yankees did to young Luis Rojas was as absurd as what they did to Ronald Torreyes, Gleyber Torres, and Miguel Andújar…….among others. When you treat personnel as chattel they find somewhere else to work and play where they’re treated decently and allowed to flourish.

They can’t demand a trade when no one is trading FOR Lindor. If they try to Cohen should tell them the only way that’s happening is if Lindor agrees to void his contract.

I don’t think people don’t want to work for Cohen. The Mets are just publically announcing targets who don’t want the job. That being said, a quick Google search will tell you that Cohen is far more despicable than the Wilpons. Again, I don’t think this has anything to do with people withdrawing their names, and quite a few team owners are not paradigms of virtue. Cohen fits the bill there. Huge scumbag.

Exactly correct. The LOLMets factor is only because the Mets are making all this public. These are unrealistic hires that should have been kept quiet. Now it will seem like the Mets are settling for someone, when in fact they aren’t. The job is definitely desirable by many, and the Mets will be fine.

I’ll bet Alderson just wanted to “bring in his own guy” and Bud Black worked out. But it makes for interesting conversation.

You automatically get a +1 for the final line.

That said, there are probably some people out there that would prefer the quiet and steady work outside NY. The mid-market teams probably don’t start firing people over every losing season.

And, just as important, a lot of GMs probably take a long-term approach. Even Bloom, for all the RS success this year, still speaks in terms of building the organization. There are a lot of GMs that might see the NYMs as a rebuild, and not as a 2022 WS contender.

If it was me, and Cohen asked me, I’d tell him to blow the place up.for 1-2 years. That might not work for him.

The media attacks Cohen for a variety of reasons. 1, he’s the wealthiest owner. 2. He gets on Twitter and says some things 3. possible political ties

*Probably* most of these stories are about making the Mets look bad, and probably Porter and Callaway were destroyed for the same reasons

If they come out with 6 stories “x executive interviewed for the job” then days later “x executive withdraws his name from consideration” it is probably bogus hit jobs on Cohen

This whole thing is hilarious. Fans of other teams having their say. Meet fans whimpering about a president of baseball operations. This is a product of the media.

Theo Epstein: wants to open mlb team.
Bill Beane: Didn’t go to any other team that talked to him.
David Stearns: couldn’t even talk to the Mets.
No one knows about what happened with Scott Harris or Matt Arnold. This is hype created by the media.
If there’s a reason people don’t want the job the media should go look in the mirror. They’re already killing Saleh and Douglas. What? Saleh has had six games. They LOVED the hire now they smugly sit back and act like they actually understand.

A FO exec that has worked for at least 10 years to get in line for a Executive position, can blow all that work up by accepting a no-win position. Once they fail they’re tainted, and owners will look for the new hot shots instead….or….as is now being done……promote from within.

Would like to say you’re wrong, but…….

Then again, the reason the Mets organization is a disaster goes back to the fact that few people of worth wanted to work for the Wilbon’s. So there aren’t quality people in the organization to promote. I’m not sure that’s Sandy’s fault. Ultimately one works for the person that signs their paycheck.

Let’s not forget Cohen was involved in the Wilpon regime. Then there’s whatever baggage Cohen himself brings to the table, which includes an apparent lack of understanding on how to build a baseball team. Did you see today’s stuff on who some of Cohen’s advisors are during the POBO search? Not exactly baseball people. He needs to keep those two worlds separate.

Think about it. Considering the market and the owner’s wealth, candidates should be flocking to apply for this position. Why aren’t they?

Jeff Luhnow is the best qualified, most logical candidate for the Mets Pres of Baseball ops.
He paid his dues, served his suspension like Alex Cora (Red Sox) and AJ Hinch(Tigers)

Yes he is coming off a suspension, but otherwise he would not be available.
    “Win/Win” situation.
Luhnow gets back into MLB on a mission to prove himself and build a perennial contender with the Mets.
Mets get to “supervise” and hold him on a shorter leash than any other successful, experienced POB.

    Get it Done!

Luhnow names architect of cheating scandal who is still employed by Astros.
(That person, allegedly, threw Luhnow under the bus)

      Thousands of Astros emails exist.
Many emails state “Do not Tell Jeff Luhnow”.

Luhnow was directly tied to scandal. He knew fully about it and approved of it.

MLB couldn’t punish the players. They failed to punish the owner Crane because the owners won’t punish each other. They can punish Luhnow and do so forever since he was running the team that cheated over multiple years.

Luhnow has only made his situation worse since the suspension by his media comments. He can join John Coppolella on the never-to-return list. He’s toast.

Did you see the AJ Hinch interview HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON the feild you can hear the freaking BANGING of a TRASH CAN. Also, Alex Cora, and Carlos Beltran knew what was going on on the field. They needed a scapegoat. AJ Hinch, got a Job, Alex Cora, got a job, Carlos Beltran will get a job. Why not Jeff. Also, he has the right to sue the Astro’s because that is a breach of contract. Also, many other teams where and are still stealing signs. So why hasn’t Luhnow a guy who built the Astro’s up form losing 101 games in one season. To developing, trading, and signing players not get a look.

Its jus mind boggling yet i know why. He is a Mexican and all of the GM’S with the exception of Kim Ng are white. This man has win SIX WORLD SERIES FREAKING RINGS and has done it not only with the Cards, but the Astros. Yes people might not like dealing with him because he makes the best trades for his ballclub PERIOD. Why this man is being blackballed and why no offense all of you stupid Mets fans want a Dinosaur in Brian Sabean because oh he is a big and sexy name. Is insane. I don’t want Sabean his time is done. Also, this Mets team is far away. The Braves made the WS, without Acuna, and Skorka they ant’s going anywhere. I DON’T WANT BRIAN SABEAN HE FAT*SS Chris Christie STOP TRYING TO PUT YOUR POLITCS INTO THIS SEARCH AND TELL THAT BOZO OF COHEN PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE AND HIRE JEFF LHUNOW.

Luhnow is suing the Astros for $22MM and as such he and his attorney are tossing a bunch of garbage out there. Once he decided to sue the Astros, he basically knew he had no chance of returning to MLB. He now has less than no chance.

I know Mets fans think their team is being unfairly picked on, but what’s happening here indicates a significant issue.

They’ve been searching for a PoBO for the last year.

They’ve been turned down multiple times going back to last year. Not just by the big brand names, but by rising-star GMs who have refused promotions. Multiple times! This has happened to no other teams.

They were forced into taking Porter last year, who was never mentioned for GM positions because his issues were known. We didn’t know them, but the rest of baseball did. The Mets ignored the whispers.

Worse, they are leaking names on all the candidates, ensuring that whomever they pick will appear to be the 7th, 8th, 9th candidate.

Stop saying Cohen is a great businessman. He’s a hedge fund operator.

The Mets dysfunction is as bad as ever.

Maybe a Mike and the Mad Dog reunion in the Mets front office? Mikey as POBO and Doggie as GM. Jerome from Manhattan could be Russo’s assistant. He’s a master at trading scrubs for superstars. The retiring Steve Somers can handle PR. He’s pretty at schmoozing S-P-O-R-T-S.

Sabean said he would consider the job. That doesn’t mean he’d accept it once all the cards are on the table. For one thing, the Mets would have to agree to Sabean’s terms. For another, Sabean would have to evaluate the pros and cons of working for this particular organization. Just a guess that it won’t happen.
