The Padres interviewed Ozzie Guillén last week as part of their ongoing managerial search, report Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter link). Guillén joins Brad Ausmus, Mike Shildt and Luis Rojas as known candidates for the position.
Guillén’s sit-down with San Diego is his first known managerial interview since he was let go by the Marlins nearly a decade ago. The 57-year-old has continued to maintain interest in landing another shot over the years since, however. While he’s been away from the dugout, Guillén has spent time in the broadcast studio, working with ESPN and NBC Sports Chicago.
Of course, Guillén is far better known for his previous playing and managerial runs than for his days as a broadcaster. He played in the majors from 1985-2000, spending the bulk of his career with the White Sox. After hanging up his cleats, he moved into coaching and landed a managerial position rather quickly. Over the 2003-04 offseason, the White Sox tabbed the then-39-year-old to take over the dugout.
Guillén’s time on the bench was almost immediately successful. The Sox posted winning records in each of his first three seasons at the helm, including a 99-win campaign in 2005 that culminated in Chicago’s third World Series title — their first in 88 years. By 2007, the team had taken a step back. They rebounded to win another division title in 2008 but didn’t make the postseason again for the remainder of Guillén’s tenure. He was let go at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
The Marlins signed Guillén not long after, but his time in Miami proved very brief. Despite an ill-fated contention effort the prior winter, Miami stumbled to a 69-93 season in 2012. They dismissed Guillén after just one season, and he hasn’t been on a major league bench since then. (Guillén has managed professionally in Venezuela more recently).
In each of his two previous hiring cycles, Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has tabbed a first-time skipper (Andy Green and Jayce Tingler, respectively). Chairman Peter Seidler has stated that previous managerial experience won’t be a prerequisite for this hiring cycle either, but the Friars’ publicly-known candidates have all managed in the majors before.
Shildt and Rojas were managers elsewhere this past season, while Ausmus managed as recently as 2019. Given how long it has been since he was last in a major league dugout, Guillén would certainly qualify as a more out-of-the-box candidate than the rest of that group. There aren’t many available options with his kind of resume, though, even if his best seasons are by now more than a decade in the past.

‘Lol Mets’ is fast becoming ‘Lol Padres’.
Didn’t they almost have it all?
Francys01
If I was Preller, I would contact John Farrell. He won two championships with the Red Sox in less than six years. He knows how to win and most importantly in October. Nice Resume.
User 4245925809
Farrell makes more sense than Guillen. heck.. Bobby V does for that matter. Guillen is off his rocker. WHY would anyone want him as manager? Are the Pad’s mistakenly interviewing him for some kind of team mascot?
em650r
Guillen would be crazy to see him manage Tatis and Machado oh boy
rememberthecoop
Yes, Guillen has to watch what he says and what he tweets but he is a very good manager strategically and in his handling of the pitching staff.
Fever Pitch Guy
Johnsilver – Never, ever mention Bobby Valentine and the word “manager” together. LOL
damascusj
Because of one out of context video in the dugout? Lol…
PutPeteinthehall
Remember that his sons were tweeting and making trouble in Chicago. Ozzie opened his mouth in Miami. Said some dumb stuff and was fired. Great manager and baseball man that communicated well with the players.
jrwhite21
John seems rather content as a lobsterman from what I’ve heard
Fever Pitch Guy
Yes and the lobsters are content with him as well.
amk1920
Farrell only won with them in 2013
The Mets "Missed WAR"
I can see how this is a joke to some people. It makes more sense than the La Russa signing. I actually like Ozzie Guillen. Sign him. He will be a better influence on Tatis and Machado then anyone else. I thought Washington would but that was before I realized Guillen was in the discussion. He did manage a team to it’s first world championship since 1917.
slimmycito
@metslostwar you would be the exact nerd to stand up for Ozzie Guilllen lol
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
What championships are you talking about? Farrell only won us one in 2013. 2007 was Francona and 2018 was Cora.
ChiSox_Fan
Guillen World Series Championship 2005 White Sox!!
Fever Pitch Guy
Francy – He won just one championship with the Red Sox, and there were some off the field issues that supposedly contributed to his dismissal.
With that said, I think he deserves another chance.

I appreciate that the Padres aren’t afraid to tick off the cancel culture. A loud, opinionated, Latino man, that wins games. That scares a LOT of people in baseball……and on this board. Keep giving your opinions and keep winning baseball games Ozzie. Don’t worry about the modern day book burners trying to cancel all thought-provoking content. Send them to their safe spaces Ozzie!
Skeptical
Don’t rewrite history. Ozzie did not offend the cancel culture and the cancel culture was not behind his firing. He made positive comments about Fidel Castro’s ability to survive which offended many in the right wing Cuban-American community. The pressure from that community and the effect on attendance got him fired.

Man, that was bad. I love Ozzie to death but that was unfathomably stupid. And it happened so soon after he was hired. Lo viste.

The guy’s a loud mouth. Whomever hires him – and it will go bad – will have no one to blame but themselves. It will happen.

That word doesn’t mean what it used to for most people these days… just watch the South Park episode. But im pretty sure Ozzie meant what he said and how he said it. How would SoCal handle a lightning rod manager like that? If they win everything should be A-OK I assume. Plus they have Clev coming back along with all the potential in the rotation.

I hope he gets it. Baseball is more fun with Ozzie Guillen.

WtfMate
If anything a guy like Ozzie is what is needed, cancel culture is BS
CNichols
They’re also confirmed to have interviewed Rojas right? I’m pretty sure they’ve already satisfied that requirement, I don’t think that would be the reason here.
I do feel like this is PR in some sense because of you look at all the people they’re confirmed to have actually considered (Guillen, Schildt, Rojas, Ausmus) they’re all former managers. Ozzie gives them a candidate amongst those who actually won a WS. Considering the past failed first time manager hires, I think they’re trying to flood the conversation around the managerial hiring process with candidates who have experience and he helps them do that.
Gothamcityriddler
How can it possibly go wrong? Oh sure Pete Rose can play comedy, love the idea. Love it!
Ahahahahaha!

This “waldfee” guy is very anti-American. I gotta say until I saw this I didnt know I needed Ozzie Guillen back in coaching but now I need this to happen.
CrikesAlready
His pro-Fidel Castro comments are bad. His attitude is probably needed in the clubhouse.
Giants74
What did he say that was pro-Castro? I looked it up. Don’t understand how you get pro-Castro out of that.
SweetHome
Ozzie was quoted by Time magazine saying “I love Fidel Castro” in April 2012. The Marlins suspended him for 5 games after that. I expect that had a role in being fired after only one year, in addition to the losing record.
Giants74
Actually, he said he ‘respects’ Castro because he keeps avoiding assassination attempts. That doesn’t sound like love. Trump was smitten Kim in North Korea. They exchanged ‘love letters’. He got praised for it. Sounds like much to do about nothing.
CalcetinesBlancos
His Fidel comments were hilarious. Those Cubans in Miami need to lighten up.

SDHotDawg

Assdribble_Cabrera
I don’t like milk straight, especially warm milk, and safe spaces are for wusses. I prefer to deal with life’s challenges head on. That’s how we learn to overcome adversity. White Sox fans wouldn’t understand that concept.
SDHotDawg
It’s your ilk that needs “safe spaces.” You never developed any coping skills.
Giants74
@barneyfife Based on your post, you are an ignorant negro. If a person read Das Kapital, they probably read Wealth of Nations. Why guys keep bringing this crap up. Why do guys bother. What need would I have for “coping skills” when I’m pwning a bunch of dim bulbs who probably don’t know Fulgencio Batista from José Bautista lol.
DarkSide830
respectfully, how do you expect to win people to your side when the guy you’re defending is evidently highly unpopular with anyone able to escape his country and your only defense is “read a book”?
Giants74
@darkside It is not about winning people over. It is about being accurate and truthful. You also need to put things into historical context. Ozzie Guillen never said he was a fan of Fidel Castro. Castro wasn’t the first dictator that Cubans have lived under. He overthrow a dictator. Why continue to do something that hasn’t worked.
CalcetinesBlancos
Darkside-
I’m about truth and reason, and I’m under no illusion that any of those irrational nutjobs can be reasoned with because they are incapable of looking at history objectively. Which isn’t exactly uncommon these days, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us have to live in their fantasy world as well.
I also think the idea that US policy towards Cuba in the 21st century should be dictated by those angry people in Miami is both shortsighted and frankly pathetic, as well as counterproductive. It also fails to take into account the many ways the US is responsible for the current Cuban government existing.. Would be nice if our country ever learned a lesson from anything we do, but that doesn’t seem to be our style.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
User 4245925809
I 100% agree. Sounds, from look of user handle this is someone from other side of the country and not familiar at all with south Florida, and Miami in particular which is location of largest Cuban population in the country, which is VERY anti communist and most wishing for the day it’s homeland will be free once again.
Have been over this before here, but during my time in USN, my ship was involved in Mariel and we rescued MANY Cubans escaping and brought them here (Florida). They were extremely grateful, but many wished even then for the day that their country would be free. That was 40y ago.
Shame other cultures don’t assimilate like those brave souls did and have to this one, but I’ll always remember that time with pride.
CalcetinesBlancos
Are you being serious? I think the entire country is aware of how those Cubans in Miami operate, especially anyone that was alive during that Elian Gonzalez telenovela.

Man, you guys are spending a lot of time arguing over the internet. A LOT. None of you win here – everyone loses.

AJ Preller — he must be trying to get let go
solaris602
Let’s be honest – this is likely the last manager Preller will hire in SD, so he’s under the gun to get it right. Guillen is too much of a wildcard. Someone like Showalter makes more sense when your back is to the wall.
sss847
if it doesn’t work out, can they hire Johnny Sanchez doing his Ozzie Guillen impression as manager?
‘show me the f—- blind guys.’
kreckert
Oh lord. That’s not what that team needs. And I don’t like to say it because from first pitch to last he’s a good baseball man. But he’s got no filter whenever there’s a microphone in his face and in today’s game where managing egos is so very important (particularly on that team) a man who can’t even manage his own ego isn’t going to be much of a leader.
solaris602
Amen. Even if we knew Guillen would lead SD to a WS championship next year, the cons STILL outweigh the pros. If Preller doesn’t mind praying before every single pre and post game Guillen presser and all the gray hair he’ll get during the pressers, then by all means hire Guillen.
SDHotDawg
Preller will not put up with a strong manager. This is just for show.
jessaumodesto
Hell yes! Just give the middle finger to everyone!
sox4ever
Yes yes yes a million times. Ozzie would make a hell of a man addition
Shoeless Joe
Amazing that they don’t lock up Bochy or Scoscia, two with significant ties to So Cal.
David C
Preller better make sure that if he hires Guillen, that he makes sure Guillen doesn’t show up to the initial press conference in a Che Guevera t-shirt (Oh, wait, this isn’t Florida; this is California).
BuhnerBuzzCut
I’m on board if he brings on John Rocker as pitching coach.
julyn82001
Ozzie would be the right manager for the Padres. I lived in Chicago when the Sox won their last WS and he was amazing. Very knowledgeable and Players loved Guillén. Granted, he quite often mishandled how to address the press (media nowadays) but other than that he did a wonderful job…
IronBallsMcGinty
He has a big personality and has been a fun addition on White Sox pre and post game shows.
So he’s got that going for him which is nice.
WtfMate
If he can take the media pressure off the team and be the lightning rod like he did in Chicago, could be what the Padres need
Ron Tingley
Perfect fit.
CalcetinesBlancos
Ozzie wasn’t let go by the Marlins over his managing; he angered the anti-Fidel expat nutjob Cuban thought police in Miami lol.
ludafish
Aside from the terrible job he was doing (which you can watch in the Franchise) the Castro stuff didn’t help. Considering I’ve lost friends and family to his regime I have no problem with them getting upset about it. So what’s your excuse for defending it? I can tell you Guillen lost the lockeroom as players didn’t like him and his son is always spouting some nonsense that gets him in trouble. If he told his son to keep it down maybe he could try to get another job .
WtfMate
Do you know what his actual comment was? He said he had respect for Castro’s savvy for avoiding assassination. That is hardly a shining endorsement of Castro.
CalcetinesBlancos
Luda-
What’s my excuse for defending what? Sanity? Because I think sanity is preferable over hysteria.
As for Ozzie and his managing, I agree. The only time I’ve ever wished he was still managing the Sox is in comparison to how bad TLR is.
Aj5258
Other than allowing his kids to be in the dugout and become too involved with the team, he was fine. Hire him with the caveat that he is being hired and his sons need to buy a ticket to be anywhere the team.
VegasSDfan
Passssss.
SDHotDawg
This is just Preller going through the motions, just like he did before he hired Green and Tingler. In the end, he’ll hire another manager who won’t have the track record to stand up to him, but he can say he “tried.” Just like he did at the trade deadline, too.
solaris602
He must have learned that trick from Mark Shapiro

Dorothy_Mantooth
As crazy as he is, Ozzie Guillen would light a fire under the players and get them to perform (or get them shipped out of town). It would be awesome to hear him talk about Hosmer to the press…he’d throw him under the bus every chance he got, Wil Myers too. There are much safer choices for Preller to make, Schlidt being option A, but I’d commend Preller if he hires Guillen as he’d be putting his own neck on the line by doing so. Guillen would either make Preller look like a genius, or Guillen would get him fired. Padres press conferences would be must see TV too. I hadn’t even considered Guillen as a candidate but the more I do, the more I like it.
Rsox
Ozzie would certainly be an interesting choice.
beersy
After the last 2 Managers who had no managing experience, I am good with any of Shildt, Guillen, or the rumoured Showalter or Scioscia. Washington wouldn’t hurt my feelings either. They would all come in and command the clubhouse, which is what I see this team needing. Someone to hold the players accountable and not someone just to coddle and make excuses for them. How a Manager with a voice would interact with Preller would be interesting to see, but if the Padres are serious about contending, that is what they need.
lilojbone
If he gets the job, I am going to miss him with Chuck Garfien and Frank Thomas on the White Sox pre-game and post-game show.
CalcetinesBlancos
They’ll have to have his lounging couch from the set sent to SD.
yamsi1912
A clown manager for a clown organization.
cubfanforever
I can’t speak to the clown organization part, but spot on with the clown manager comment. Get the calliope tuned up if Guillen is hired.
Crunchtime1969
They finished third in their division with 78 wins. They had injuries and a lack of depth to really contend. They were overrated because of a successful abbreviated season the year prior. They will rebound under the right manager. That’s what this is about. Not your nickel and dime pinheaded remarks.

I’m still trying to trade Bob Melvin , and Sean Manaea to the Padres for to start with CJ Abrams , and other suitable to the A’s
MLB Top 100 Commenter
The Padres will not part with CJ Abrams, a future all-star, unless they get a severely injured and overpaid pitcher in return. You should know better.
julyn82001
A’s Bob Melvin is going no where. Sean Manaea is a possibility to be traded as he would be a free agent in 2023. Oakland would likely want more than CJ Abrams to complete a trade like that…
Dorothy_Mantooth
CJ Abrams would be more than enough to get Manaea; Oakland would actually have to throw in another player to get Abrams; just not their manager…

Didn’t see this coming but I like the idea.Guillen will not let Preller tell him what to do.So that said Ozzie is most likely would not take this job unless he is really desperate.
msqboxer
Interesting…never thought of Guillen, but it makes really good sense if you want/need or are looking for the following.
1) A manager that understands Latin players.
2) A manager that can humble big egos.
3) A manager that helps take the heat off the players when they are not playing well.
4) Less sabermetrics
5) A constant good sound bite.
BigB
Ozzie would be a fantastic choice. If they could put a filter on him.
LordD99
No. The rest of baseball fandom does not want a filter on Ozzie. Just the opposite. They want him hired as a manager and a corresponding reality series that follows him around also launched.
snoopy369
Lol… Ozzie is definitely what they don’t need.
And correction to the article: Ozzie wasn’t let go by the White Sox. He was traded to the Marlins!

I’d love to see the Sox fire TLR and bring back Ozzie, but it will never happen, especially as long as Kenny Williams is on the White Sox payroll…
terrymesmer
> He was let go at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
> Miami stumbled to a 69-93 season in 2012. They dismissed Guillén after just one season
An astonishing misrepresentation of what happened.
Orel Saxhiser
Astonishing is an understatement. The Marlins finished 67-95 in 2021, are bringing Mattingly back for a seventh season, and are considered by many to have a bright future. As for Guillen’s 69-93 stumble in 2012, the Marlins were 72-90 in 2011 and 62-100 in 2013. The only winning record they’ve had since was 31-29 during 2020’s short season.
I’m not saying Mattingly should be fired, just that’s it unfair t for Ozzie to be depicted as a failed Marlins manager when he barely got a chance. He quickly guided the White Sox to a huge turnaround and wasn’t the blame for faulty roster construction later on. If I’m the Padres, I’m looking at how Ozzie righted the ship with the White Sox, not how things went south later on. He got the most out of his talented early teams in short order, which is what the Padres are looking for.
waterdog311
Please hire this guy. I would love to see the implosion and would tune in regularly just to watch the spiraling toxic nature ferment into must see tv.
SDHotDawg
The fireworks might be fun, but Preller will turn the players against him.
Orel Saxhiser
Luis Rojas might end up being Gabe Kapler 2.0. Two seasons of growing pains in the NL East followed by success someplace else. The Padres would be an excellent situation for him.
NativeAmerican
Great interview but bad fit!!
The Saber-toothed Superfife
The Tigers should call AJ or visaversa.
MafiaBass
Guillen’s personaility might be a great fit for Machado and Tatis. Or it could be a disaster. Either way, it would be noteworthy.
SportsFan0000
Going to the Padres would be Guillen “coming full circle”
since he was originally signed by the Padres and
traded away like so many other Padres prospects
who became stars with other franchises.
I doubt Preller signs Guillen.
Preller likes to micromanage and to hire guys he can control.
Guillen is like a “wild horse” with no filter on his mouth.
At times, it seems that Guillen’s brain is not connected to his mouth.
If hired, Guillen would be the shiny new object and worth a few laughs in the press
until Guillen says something really stupid to embarrass the franchise and ownership..
I doubt Guillen would last more than 1 year, 2 tops..
.
Only reason Preller hires Guillen is to keep Ownership and fan heat off himself and his own job,
SDHotDawg
No manager will be successful without being given authority that matches his accountability and responsibility. And, most importantly, a GM that has his back with the players.
In other words, no manager Preller hires.
