Cardinals To Hire Skip Schumaker As Bench Coach

By TC Zencka | November 7, 2021 at 10:13am CDT

Nov. 7: Katie Woo of The Athletic tweets that Schumaker’s deal is a one-year contract with options.

Nov. 6: Skip Schumaker is returning to the Cardinals. The former infielder will join new manager Oliver Marmol’s staff as the bench coach, per Rob Rains of stlsportspage.com (via Twitter). The agreement will be finalized this weekend, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Schumaker was thought to be a candidate to take over as manager after Mike Shildt was let go, and while that job ultimately went to Marmol, Schumaker returns to the Midwest anyway to serve as Marmol’s right hand. Schumaker was the Padres’ first base coach last season. He now steps into the role that Marmol himself filled for St. Louis last year.

The scrappy infielder/outfielder was a fan favorite of the Cardinals’ rabid fanbase during his playing days. He spent eight seasons in St. Louis, slashing .288/.345/.377 in 2,687 plate appearances.

The fact he was an incredibly hard worker, scrappy as can be, made himself into an OK 2B after being an OF, a heck of a good guy, and put up some pretty good, albeit not outstanding, numbers made him a fan favorite. He had a hard time cracking the majors and then became one of LaRussa’s boys after proving he was willing to work his tail off to be a big leaguer.

Yep, a hard worker who took nothing for granted. He’s exactly what a team learning how to win as a unit needs. When I would watch him play, I couldn’t help but think “future manager.” For the Padres’ sake, I hope the players reflect on what went wrong in 2021, take some responsibility, and learn from it. If they do that, they will be fine. A team outing or two in spring training might do wonders.

He was also baseball smart and a good baserunner, things that don’t show up in numbers, but if .288/.345/.377 in 2,600 AB in MLB is something to laugh at then I musta missed a memo or something

He actually wasn’t the Padres first base coach this last year, he was the first base coach for them two years ago. The past two was spent as the Padres Associate Manager. Might want to correct that.

Keep bringing in/and or hiring people because they have ties to the Cardinal organization and then question why the last championship was won under someone hired without any ties whatsoever.

lol, being the manager for 15 years (1996-2011) isn’t having any ties to the club, I guess. Your entire point is just blah. Would maybe make sense if the Cardinals were hiring Skip off the street.

As mentioned by another commenter above, he was the Padres’ associate manager this year, which makes this all the more surprising, IMO. I didn’t think him coming on as bench coach was an option; seemed like a lateral move.

I thought, if the Cardinals were to bring him on, they would have to give him the ropes and let Marmol stay on as his right-hand man, and I closed the book on Skip coming to STL once Marmol was promoted. But instead it’s the inverse. I for sure thought Skip would get the job in SD. This makes me ecstatic as a Cardinals fan, tbh.

“One day when Skip Schumaker was a little boy, several prominent Dodgers refused to sign his glove. Orel Hershiser then came along and said, “I’m not famous, but I’m on the Dodgers, and I’ll sign for you.” Schumaker wore Hershiser’s 55 for his most of his career.” (Including as a member of the Dodgers.)
