Another couple of names have been withdrawn from the Mets’ search for a new general manager. Sig Mejdal is now out of the running, per Andy Martino of SNY (via Twitter). Mejdal is an assistant general manager and vice president with the Orioles who came to Baltimore from Houston with Mike Elias. Mejdal’s strength is analytics, and he’ll continue to ply that trade to build towards a better future in Baltimore.
Red Sox assistant GM and vice president Raquel Ferreira pulled her name from the running as well after having discussions with Mets official this past week, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Ferreria’s name has been bandied about as a potential GM candidate around the league after 23 years in Boston.
Given how the last year has gone for Mets’ front office officials, it’s no surprise that Ferreira would pull her name from consideration. The organization’s culture has been repeatedly called into question, as has the autonomy of whoever takes over as GM, given Alderson’s continued presence in the organization.
Frankly, given the short tenures of Alderson’s first two hires as GM, it’s a touch surprising that he’s being given a third crack at this particular egg in the same calendar year. On the other hand, setting up the Mets front office for the future is the exact job that he was hired to do, and as of now, that task is incomplete.

That’s what we’re seeing with Alderson here. Wouldn’t particularly surprise me if Alderson stalled the search and gave son Bryn the additional year to recuperate his resume after the Rocker fiasco.

We never know everyone who interviewed for most front office jobs, but then again, most positions are filled relatively quickly with people eager to take the position. This is a perfect storm of people wanting to make Cohen look like a dufus, and people genuinely not interested in working for the owner who’s going 2nd guess every transaction with idiot fans on Twitter.

What’s substantially worse is that he’s offered the job to two female assistant GMs, one of them from the Yankees (although I don’t recall seeing that on here), and with the lack of female representation at the GM position, coupled with the fact it’s a promotion to GM, one would assume it would be a no-brainer for both sides to take this position.

Jay Jaffe at Fangraphs said that is the rumor he and others are hearing. The new GM will be sandwiched between the two Alderson’s, limiting the ability of the incoming GM to make changes.

This seems like a ‘dream job’ for a younger baseball executive looking to cut his or her teeth in a GM / POBO role. What this tells me is that the inner workings of the Mets organization is a complete disaster. Imagine being the #3 guy in Baltimore and turning down an opportunity like this…it screams utter dysfunction in the Mets front office. Their only choices now seem to be ostracized former GMs (Billy Eppler, Jeff Luhnow) who are desperate to work again. What is going inside the Mets organization that makes this such an unappealing position? Inquiring minds want to know. Is Sandy that much of a control freak or is it Cohen who candidates are so turned off by? I never really got the whole LOL Mets thing, but now I’m starting to. That’s mere rumor. There’s no way Bloom insisted on a rebuild. The Mets had a 40+ WAR core, room to add payroll, the GOAT heading the rotation, and farm talent to deal. That’s a 90 win team even before any additions, with a very cheap core and a rotation headed by deGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler.
The rebuild story was just a Wilpon lie to cover the hire of a GM in on their plan to sell the team in the next 2 years.

At this time of the year FO’s are working feverishly going over players that are available as FA’s and will be available in trade. Coordination has to be done between multiple departments – including the GM, Scouting people, manager and coaching staff.
The Mets currently have no POBO or manager. Who knows what the makeup of the coaches and scouts will be? So anyone that takes the position at this point is pretty much out of the loop going into the 2022 season.
They should at least talk to Billy Eppler. Ties to NY, wasn’t a terrible GM in Anaheim with tough circumstances there. He made some pretty good deals. Young enough and he is a guy who I think would work well with Alderson, as Eppler had to work with Arte Moreno. Eppler should be given another shot at it.
The Cubbies claimed Wade Miley off of waivers and can trade him for a prospect. Meanwhile, the Mets are (not yet) interviewing the Jeopardy producer facing allegations of sexism.

The Mets need to take a different direction. They have to make the Mets the most desirable team to play for. Cohen needs to buy a new team plane and fill it with every luxury item available. Build the best clubhouse and best workout facility ever seen in MLB. Put his players up in the best hotels while on the road, serve the best food, provide the best transportation to/from the hotel to the stadium. Give them the best medical benefits possible (it they are allowed to do more than what MLB provides). If you make all of the job perks the absolute best, the best players will come. They obviously are not going to get there via player development and sharp GM moves as no one wants to work for them in the front office, so make it a “can’t say no” destination for the players. That’s their only hope at turning this around.
I told the Mets no twice and now I have to block them. Try Vince McMahon. He knows how to slash payroll and mistreat employees.

The problem is Steve Cohen. Quite a few people here have mentioned that since Cohen purchased the Mets on November 6, 2020, exactly one year ago today. I’ve always believed Cohen was the wrong choice to own the Mets and have followed his ownership from that perspective. Of course, I could be totally off base, though nothing that has happened so far has given me cause to change my mind. We’ll see what happens.

Cohen is a fan and he’s running that team. I had hopes for him and Alderson. Lindor’s agents walked all over Cohen. Now that they have the guaranteed contract the next step is for them to take the stand that Lindor can’t play in that chaos and he wants to be traded. Only a matter of time. That’s the way the NBA guys have done it for decades. It’s going to take deGrom and / or Alonso to demand out before the light goes on….and possibly for the Commissioner to step in.

Something just doesn’t seem right with the Mets. The possibility of deGrom opting out in a year looms large. I have no thought or cares about it. As I responded to you on the Correa story, I agree with what teams such as the Rays, Brewers, A’s, Guardians and others do. It takes all the players on a roster to win in today’s MLB. Spread the money around. Large long-term contracts for select players are almost always an albatrosses – most sooner than later. The players salary goes up as his production goes down. Stops them from acquiring other players. Brewers gave Yellich a fat contract. They had Avisaíl García for 2 years, got decent run production out of him for a fraction of the cost. Now they’ll go out and find another Avisaíl García.
I spent some time in business working with auditors. You’d be surprised how often what looked so good when a decision was made turned out so poorly…..but by that time everyone was gaga over the latest decision and the projected future rewards.
As an investment players are like cars, not stock in companies. Even quality players are going to deteriorate, but there are times they’ll be indispensable. Stock in quality companies however can grow for decades and get better and better.
As for Lindor – he’s a very good SS. Cleveland trained him and handled his career on the field and his contract perfectly.
Pretty embarrassing. I will say, though, wouldn’t being able to change said culture be a motivator for Ferreira? We always hear that lack of diversity in administrations is partly responsible for issues like the Mets but then when given a chance to positively influence that culture, it gets turned down?

More likely, a female GM would be under much more of a microscope than a male GM (case in point: why is Alderson STILL in charge of anything here?), so why accept a position like this that will inevitably end in failure? DeGrom was worth 5 WAR even with the injuries. The Mets were a 77 win team that lost 12 wins to free agency and already have a $190m payroll. They don’t have as much of a chance as the Tigers, never mind ‘any other team.’

The only thing worse than this dragging out, in humiliating fashion, would be for them to panic and hire the next person that says yes. You’d think Steve would be able to have a conversation/dinner with any notable baseball person he’d like to, just to get ideas on candidates. Talk to Ron Darling, Chipper Jones, Sandy Koufax, the potential names of baseball lifers / advisors are endless. He’s not qualified to pick the next guy, so he’s gotta go to work. Sandy is an impediment, not part of the solution.
@Amazins Consider, too, that there are headhunters who will vet every reasonable candidate, and retired executives who can be paid to create a round table of advisors. That’s the direction Cohen should be taken. Alderson should be allowed nowhere near this, and Cohen has created nothing but problems for himself by filling the Mets board with nothing but cronies.
This process should be simple to set right for anyone with experience in business. The road to success here is obvious. You don’t just consult your buddies or failures on the matter.
The negativity surrounding the situation lies with the Mets. It would help if they put out an official statement about the process and their timeline for making the hires. Even if it was total BS. Gotta control the message in this age of information overload. Yet another hire the Mets need to make.
