Another couple of names have been withdrawn from the Mets’ search for a new general manager. Sig Mejdal is now out of the running, per Andy Martino of SNY (via Twitter). Mejdal is an assistant general manager and vice president with the Orioles who came to Baltimore from Houston with Mike Elias. Mejdal’s strength is analytics, and he’ll continue to ply that trade to build towards a better future in Baltimore.
Red Sox assistant GM and vice president Raquel Ferreira pulled her name from the running as well after having discussions with Mets official this past week, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Ferreria’s name has been bandied about as a potential GM candidate around the league after 23 years in Boston.
Given how the last year has gone for Mets’ front office officials, it’s no surprise that Ferreira would pull her name from consideration. The organization’s culture has been repeatedly called into question, as has the autonomy of whoever takes over as GM, given Alderson’s continued presence in the organization.
Frankly, given the short tenures of Alderson’s first two hires as GM, it’s a touch surprising that he’s being given a third crack at this particular egg in the same calendar year. On the other hand, setting up the Mets front office for the future is the exact job that he was hired to do, and as of now, that task is incomplete.

I’m not available either.

You’re also likely too overqualified for the job. (Have a pulse, brain and have once watched a baseball game….doesn’t need to be MLB…can be little league.)
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Wow. Even assistants from the worst team in baseball would rather stay put than get a promotion and go to the Mets. Everyone really is just saying no to the Mets no matter what. I can’t imagine preferring to be an assistant GM in Baltimore over an actual GM for the Mets.
RobM
It is perplexing.
JackStrawb
Perhaps working for a rich crook who paid $1.6 billion in fines, a record for insider trading, and has shown himself to be a complete buffoon, with a year under his belt that Jeff Wilpon would have found embarrassing, is revolting to most people?

I think we are getting to the time where they should consider hiring someone to be the “business administrator” for the organization, and let Sandy be GM.
It’s draining to watch this unfold, like a slow-motion car crash.
JackStrawb
You’re kidding, of course. Alderson told the Wilpons’ lies for a decade, shilled for them, hurt players on their behalf, helped shorten David Wright’s career to squeeze a few more tickets out of him, played players into the ground on their orders…
It’s astonishing that Alderson isn’t universally seen for what he is.

Cohen and Alderson should just hire Matt Klentak or Jeff Bridich and get it over with at this point.
Of course, it’s still not a given that either of them would even take the job and at that point, I’d say Sandy’s son would be the odds-on-favorite to be the next POBO.
stevewpants
Bridich would be interesting, it’s working for another crazy owner but at least Cohen spends more.

Something similar happened in 2000. George “Dubya” Bush hired Dick Cheney to screen running mates, and Cheney ended up with the job.

BTW I am interested in how every name seemingly gets leaked. I’ve never seen this before. I suspect this is fully intentional. Perhaps Cohen has decided to be fully transparent on every one contacted? I don’t agree with the strategy, but it does seem intentional.
Monkey’s Uncle
It’s either intentional, or Cohen has some people working for him who really, really don’t like him, who are trying to make him look bad.
bucsfan0004
We never know everyone who interviewed for most front office jobs, but then again, most positions are filled relatively quickly with people eager to take the position. This is a perfect storm of people wanting to make Cohen look like a dufus, and people genuinely not interested in working for the owner who’s going 2nd guess every transaction with idiot fans on Twitter.

@lord It’s an interesting approach no less and probably strategized and driven by some NYC PR firm. Be the opposite of the tight-lipped Yankees and grab loud headlines. Cohen also has ambitions to build a casino in NYC so he’s decided to wear a big entertainer hat. Given some time to take everyone’s temperature, he’s going to become the Mark Cuban of baseball. And that’s not necessary a bad thing.

What’s substantially worse is that he’s offered the job to two female assistant GMs, one of them from the Yankees (although I don’t recall seeing that on here), and with the lack of female representation at the GM position, coupled with the fact it’s a promotion to GM, one would assume it would be a no-brainer for both sides to take this position.
But literally everyone is saying no. I mean, I saw this once in high school and someone finally had to tell the kid to stop asking girls to the prom – just don’t go. What a terrible, toxic mess this will be when he finally hired someone. That individual will be the laughingstock of the GMs.

If Alderson and his son were not there someone would have taken the job already. No one trusts that they would have the freedom to do what they feel would take to build a winner. So this will continue to go on, at some point Cohen has to realize that what he is doing now isn’t working period.
LordD99
Jay Jaffe at Fangraphs said that is the rumor he and others are hearing. The new GM will be sandwiched between the two Alderson’s, limiting the ability of the incoming GM to make changes.
JackStrawb
@lordd99 That’s unbelievable—though I do believe it. Cohen has been interested in buying the team since 2011. It is shocking to me how many people have withdrawn their names from consideration. The Mets are a high profile team with a ton of money. This seems like a ‘dream job’ for a younger baseball executive looking to cut his or her teeth in a GM / POBO role. What this tells me is that the inner workings of the Mets organization is a complete disaster. Imagine being the #3 guy in Baltimore and turning down an opportunity like this…it screams utter dysfunction in the Mets front office. Their only choices now seem to be ostracized former GMs (Billy Eppler, Jeff Luhnow) who are desperate to work again. What is going inside the Mets organization that makes this such an unappealing position? Inquiring minds want to know. Is Sandy that much of a control freak or is it Cohen who candidates are so turned off by? I never really got the whole LOL Mets thing, but now I’m starting to. What an utter train wreck the Mets have become.
bucsfan0004
Seems more like a ‘last job’ for an up and coming executive.
JackStrawb
@Dorothy_Mantooth My only objection is the idea that the Mets have ‘become’ an utter train wreck. They’ve been one ever since the Wilpons assumed complete ownership 20 years ago. What Cohen has demonstrated is that he’s really just Jeff Wilpon with a better income stream.
vikingbluejay67

bucsfan0004
When did Ng turn down the Mets job? Get your facts straight
Orel Saxhiser
She interviewed for the GM job in 2018 but was not a finalist. The Mets ultimately hired Brodie Van Wagenen because he was the only candidate who claimed he could win now. They also passed on Chaim Bloom.
cleonswoboda
they also had a shot at Kim Ng before they brought in Alderson in 2010.
JackStrawb
That’s mere rumor. There’s no way Bloom insisted on a rebuild. The Mets had a 40+ WAR core, room to add payroll, the GOAT heading the rotation, and farm talent to deal. That’s a 90 win team even before any additions, with a very cheap core and a rotation headed by deGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler.
The rebuild story was just a Wilpon lie to cover the hire of a GM in on their plan to sell the team in the next 2 years.
Cosmo2
Ng wasn’t offered the job. She should have been, but she never turned anything down.

What’s really bad is this…….
At this time of the year FO’s are working feverishly going over players that are available as FA’s and will be available in trade. Coordination has to be done between multiple departments – including the GM, Scouting people, manager and coaching staff.
The Mets currently have no POBO or manager. Who knows what the makeup of the coaches and scouts will be? So anyone that takes the position at this point is pretty much out of the loop going into the 2022 season.
Redstitch108* 2
They should at least talk to Billy Eppler. Ties to NY, wasn’t a terrible GM in Anaheim with tough circumstances there. He made some pretty good deals. Young enough and he is a guy who I think would work well with Alderson, as Eppler had to work with Arte Moreno. Eppler should be given another shot at it.

The Cubbies claimed Wade Miley off of waivers and can trade him for a prospect. Meanwhile, the Mets are (not yet) interviewing the Jeopardy producer facing allegations of sexism.

You know, there are valid reasons why these people don’t want the job: moving to NYC a couple of years after moving from Houston to Baltimore. 23 years in Boston, then moving to NYC. Thick sets of roots and family ties involved. Switching coasts? Family ties? And of course a fanbase that shrieks like feeding hyenas all the time.
IF someone wanted to deal with those factors, Alderson and Cohen would have minimal impact in the course of “saving” the franchise. The next Frank Cashen is out there; they just need to find him.

The Mets need to take a different direction. They have to make the Mets the most desirable team to play for. Cohen needs to buy a new team plane and fill it with every luxury item available. Build the best clubhouse and best workout facility ever seen in MLB. Put his players up in the best hotels while on the road, serve the best food, provide the best transportation to/from the hotel to the stadium. Give them the best medical benefits possible (it they are allowed to do more than what MLB provides). If you make all of the job perks the absolute best, the best players will come. They obviously are not going to get there via player development and sharp GM moves as no one wants to work for them in the front office, so make it a “can’t say no” destination for the players. That’s their only hope at turning this around.

The problem is Steve Cohen. Quite a few people here have mentioned that since Cohen purchased the Mets on November 6, 2020, exactly one year ago today. It’s as if these candidates are staying clear to avoid being around when the other shoe drops. I’ve always believed Cohen was the wrong choice to own the Mets and have followed his ownership from that perspective. Of course, I could be totally off base, though nothing that has happened so far has given me cause to change my mind. We’ll see what happens.
Samuel
@ Cey Hey;
I’ve read your posts and responded to you some. You are older and have a business background.
I have always had a saying about organizations…..
Things work the way the people in charge want them to work. If they don’t want it to work that way, they’d change it.
Cohen is a fan and he’s running that team. I had hopes for him and Alderson. Lindor’s agents walked all over Cohen. Now that they have the guaranteed contract the next step is for them to take the stand that Lindor can’t play in that chaos and he wants to be traded. Only a matter of time. That’s the way the NBA guys have done it for decades. It’s going to take deGrom and / or Alonso to demand out before the light goes on….and possibly for the Commissioner to step in.
Orel Saxhiser
@Samuel. I don’t have a business background. It started out that way in college but I soon dropped out and later returned with a different major. In no way do I have a business mind. Just ask my wife.
Something just doesn’t seem right with the Mets. The possibility of deGrom opting out in a year looms large. Otherwise, I think the Lindor contract is at least as bad as what Van Wagenen did in trading for his untradeable former client Cano. There was no reason to do it so soon. Especially for a position player who doesn’t possess an elite bat.
Question: Given all that has happened, what do you feel Linder might command in this free-agent market?
Samuel
“Question: Given all that has happened, what do you feel Linder might command in this free-agent market?”
L O L
I have no thought or cares about it. As I responded to you on the Correa story, I agree with what teams such as the Rays, Brewers, A’s, Guardians and others do. It takes all the players on a roster to win in today’s MLB. Spread the money around. Large long-term contracts for select players are almost always an albatrosses – most sooner than later. The players salary goes up as his production goes down. Stops them from acquiring other players. Brewers gave Yellich a fat contract. They had Avisaíl García for 2 years, got decent run production out of him for a fraction of the cost. Now they’ll go out and find another Avisaíl García.
I spent some time in business working with auditors. You’d be surprised how often what looked so good when a decision was made turned out so poorly…..but by that time everyone was gaga over the latest decision and the projected future rewards.
As an investment players are like cars, not stock in companies. Even quality players are going to deteriorate, but there are times they’ll be indispensable. Stock in quality companies however can grow for decades and get better and better.
As for Lindor – he’s a very good SS. Cleveland trained him and handled his career on the field and his contract perfectly.
J.H.
Pretty embarrassing. I will say, though, wouldn’t being able to change said culture be a motivator for Ferreira? We always hear that lack of diversity in administrations is partly responsible for issues like the Mets but then when given a chance to positively influence that culture, it gets turned down?
I guess I’m just saying I doubt that’s why she withdrew her name. More likely, a female GM would be under much more of a microscope than a male GM (case in point: why is Alderson STILL in charge of anything here?), so why accept a position like this that will inevitably end in failure? Wait for something better. While I’m at it, that goes for male, female, plants, animals, inanimate objects…. Just stay away from this mess. We all know this is going to end with Alderson still running things.
Redsox04 2
I’m pretty sure George Costanza is available, the Yankees did fire him and he’s had nothing else since then!!!!

The whole public rejection thing is suss to me. So much of it, that it seems like it’s some sort of message from the wider industry. No idea why. Front offices worried about the possible inflationary effect of new ownership maybe. Whatever it is, makes for an interesting thing to follow.

The best comment in this thread was that somebody in the Mets organization is leaking like a sieve. Look how buttoned-up the Padres manager search was until Bob Melvin came out of nowhere.
Now as to why the leaks are happening, anybody’s guess is as good as anybody else’s guess. For all people outside the Mets organization know, Cohen could be doing the leaks himself, out of some kind of “transparency” death wish. As another commenter said, he hangs out on Twitter with, well, the usual kind of people you get on Twitter.
Sooner or later somebody will take the job. It’s not the strongest division and if deGrom can stop getting hurt, the Mets have as much of a chance as any other team.
Samuel
The people the Padres were considering for manager were noted here constantly…..and those were leaks.
Cosmo2
Mets have terrible with this for years. Not just leaks, but leaks that end up pushing the LOL narrative.
JackStrawb
DeGrom was worth 5 WAR even with the injuries. The Mets were a 77 win team that lost 12 wins to free agency and already have a $190m payroll. They don’t have as much of a chance as the Tigers, never mind ‘any other team.’

At what point does it stop being news that another person either refused an interview or taken their name out of consideration
Amazins
The only thing worse than this dragging out, in humiliating fashion, would be for them to panic and hire the next person that says yes. You’d think Steve would be able to have a conversation/dinner with any notable baseball person he’d like to, just to get ideas on candidates. Talk to Ron Darling, Chipper Jones, Sandy Koufax, the potential names of baseball lifers / advisors are endless. He’s not qualified to pick the next guy, so he’s gotta go to work. Sandy is an impediment, not part of the solution.
JackStrawb
@Amazins Consider, too, that there are headhunters who will vet every reasonable candidate, and retired executives who can be paid to create a round table of advisors. That’s the direction Cohen should be taken. Alderson should be allowed nowhere near this, and Cohen has created nothing but problems for himself by filling the Mets board with nothing but cronies.
This process should be simple to set right for anyone with experience in business. The road to success here is obvious. You don’t just consult your buddies or failures on the matter.
Orel Saxhiser
The negativity surrounding the situation lies with the Mets. It would help if they put out an official statement about the process and their timeline for making the hires. Even if it was total BS. Gotta control the message in this age of information overload. Yet another hire the Mets need to make.
LarryJ4
Lmfao. Spit out my drink seeing more names reject the Mets! Alderson is the problem there. Cohen too but nothing anyone can do about an owner wanting in on discussions. Alderson wants input to and it’s scaring everyone away to have 2 boneheads whispering in each ear what to do. They want puppets and aren’t going to find any unless the person they hire is as desperate as they are!
Rsox
Honestly it seems the only way the Mets may get anywhere is to stay away from active GM’s/AGM’s and either look for some one who’s been out of the game for a minute (Jeffery Luhnow, Michael Hill, Dan Jennings) or go completely outside the box and try to pluck a low level executive somewhere and hope something sticks

Alderson is shockingly inept. He fluked into the 2015 WS thanks to his fourth choice suddenly becoming available at the trade deadline, helped by a startling amount of luck.
