11:05AM: The White Sox have officially announced both the signing and Garcia’s $16.5MM salary, with the additional detail that Garcia will receive $5.5MM in each season of the deal.
TODAY, 12:57AM: Garcia receives a $16.5MM guarantee, Heyman reports.
NOVEMBER 30: The White Sox have agreed to re-sign infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia, reports MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link). It’ll be a surprising three-year commitment for MDR Sports Management client.
Garcia, 30, tallied 474 plate appearances with the South Siders in 2021 — the second-highest total of his career — and posted a .267/.335/.376 batting line with five homers, 22 doubles, four triples and six stolen bases (in eight attempts). Dating back to 2017, when Garcia established himself as a fixture on the White Sox’ roster, he’s batted .273/.317/.388 while seeing time at second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots.
Despite a need for an everyday second baseman in Chicago, it seems Garcia’s role won’t change much on his new contract. The Athletic’s James Fegan tweets that Garcia will continue as an oft-used backup around the diamond and, when injury necessitates, a temporary everyday option.
The ChiSox already have Yoan Moncada installed at third base, Tim Anderson at shortstop, Eloy Jimenez in left field and Luis Robert in center. Andrew Vaughn and Gavin Sheets saw some time in the outfield this year but are better suited at first base — where Jose Abreu is locked in — and/or designated hitter. Garcia is a competent backup just about anywhere, with 200-plus innings at every position other than first base, catcher and (of course) pitcher. It still seems likely that Chicago will make an addition at second base, and an upgrade in the outfield is also quite possible.
It’s uncommon, albeit not unprecedented, to see a free-agent bench player of this nature receive a deal of three or more years in length. Ben Zobrist landed four years as a free agent with the Cubs, and the general expectation is that reigning super-utility star du jour Chris Taylor will eclipse Zobrist’s $56MM guarantee. Both Zobrist and Taylor, however, hit the market as above-average hitters with everyday upside; that hasn’t been true of Garcia. The deal is in some ways reminiscent of the Padres’ three-year contract with Jurickson Profar, though Chicago will hope for better results than that deal provided for San Diego in year one.

The guy ended the season with basically a league-average line after a terrible start. Combine that with his versatility, even if the outfield defense isn’t great, and he’s a useful player.

Useful? Yes. Glad to have him back.
Top ten most valuable? Not since 2018 or ’19 when they were bad.
Bench players are important, but when a guy like him gets 130 starts and 600 PA, that means the team is bad. He shouldn’t be one of the best players on a good team.
IjustloveBaseball
The value’s in the versatility, especially a guy who can play up the middle.
Yankee Clipper
I haven’t seen a lot of him, but from what I’ve seen and read Garcia seems like a great player to have on the roster. Versatile, plays key IF positions, and can hit roughly league average. Would’ve loved that type of utility on the Yankees. We had Tyler Wade.
Yoyosoxsox
He is a good player if watch them. We would lost games without him. Very valuable and worth this contact. U need the glue.

This is fine as long as they acquire a full time decent+ 2B, which I’m worried about actually happening.
baseballisfun001
Cheaper Chris Taylor, hopefully for a lot less money.
baseballisfun001
Did they want to lock him up before the teams who missed on Taylor pivoted? Not the same bat quality but defensive versatility is at least comparable.
CluHaywood
Did I miss the entire 2nd half last year when Taylor hit about .130?
maximumvelocity
Versatility is comparable. Talent is not.
Taylor is a significantly better player, and this should not prevent them from targeting him.
chopper2hopper
They both play baseball. They both play multiple positions. Past that, the comparisons stop. Please don’t ever mention chris taylor with leury Garcia ever again. I beg you. Please.
baseballisfun001
Leury 2.1 WAR in 415 AB’s last year, Taylor 2.6 WAR in 507 AB’s. For the likely price difference, its not as far off as you think. Taylor just gets more spotlight having had a prominent role in LA for so long. Value for the Sox is there – plus being the longest tenured guy on the roster and a year younger than Taylor? I’ll take that value.
chopper2hopper
This is the first season in your WAR hero’s career posting a WAR over 2. I guess he’ll get 3 more cracks at it.
And what’s your point about value? Why do white Sox fans care so much about saving Jerry Reinsdorf a buck? They had a laughable payroll and made you wait for 3-4 years while tanking for this very moment and you’re talking about how wonderful it is to keep a guy coming off a (sad) career year because he’s tenured? What in the world has this organization done to its fanbase
Personally, I demand better than leury garcia, regardless of whatever role he fills
maximumvelocity
WAR for utility players is a mirage, because a lot of it depends on whether or not they log the bulk of their time in positions of strength. Taylor had. negative defensive WAR, because he was mainly used as a CF, and he is just a passable player there, and that brought down his average. But his offensive WAR was a full point higher than Garcia’s.
Chris Taylor is a significantly better offensive player, and that is across the board. He posted a 110 OPS+ to Garcia’s 96. And Taylor has had an OPS+ of
110 or higher in four of the last five seasons, and the one season below was 107.
Garcia has a career OPS+ of 81, and only posted one above 100 once in his career, the strike shortened season. He is also injury prone.
The White Sox need someone who can help them offensively at both 2b and RF. While I sincerely hope that isn’t Taylor, fact is, he brings much more to the table at the plate than Garcia, and it’s not really close.
chopper2hopper
Thank you, Max. Amen
Oscar the Grouch
Taylor comparison is funny. Taylor has made an all star team, Garcia might have trouble making an all star filled with MLB players named Leury Garcia. Also when Garcia is playing the outfield he appears to be running around invisible parked cars while trying to track fly balls. White Sox fans defending this as anything but a status quo signing are too easily pleased.
baseball is fun
Not disagreeing with either of you, but we could do worse than Leury. I didn’t expect Reinsdorf to sign Taylor as role-player like Leury, they’ve never run payroll like that (to the dismay of fans, obviously). Seager as a lefty 2B would have fit amazingly well, but it was a pipe dream to expect adding a contract like that. Hopefully there are more advanced moves on the way post-transaction freeze.

hyraxwithaflamethrower
No, because they slept through Thanksgiving weekend and yesterday when a lot of top names that could have helped them signed elsewhere.
CluHaywood
Semien was the only real option ar 2B, and that contract he got was dumb on every level. Good for Marcus. Everyone else you are paying to play out of position. And yes, it absolutely matters if a player is playing out of position.
CluHaywood
I expect absolutely nothing less from this fan base on the internet…
DarkSide830
this site has been full of such manic takes lately. It’s November/December. If there are still glaring holes later in January then you freak out.
mike127
no darkside, if there are glaring holes at the end of july then you freak out—the Braves were under .500 until deep into the first week of August. In that division the Sox can have two glaring holes the entire season (see 2021) and still make the playoffs.
seamaholic 2
I don’t see why surprising. Solid league average player who can play anywhere, and has been getting better as a hitter lately. Those guys matter.

It’s right there in the article. This is a bench player signed to play off the bench. Let’s not panic just yet.
CalcetinesBlancos
Excuse me, but did you watch the Sox in 2021? We should have started to panic a long time ago.
IronBallsMcGinty
Leury has been useful, healthy and versatile plus he’s only 30. All teams need players like this.
pplama
Sox have weaknesses. OBP. 2B, LF and RF defense.. Hitting RHP.
These are also Leury weaknesses.
His skill set is one the Sox should be letting go for better complimentary pieces. Not giving them 3 year deals.
TLR is also oddly enamored with this guy and is guaranteed to misuse him.
It’s another example of an unimaginative, bargain hunting franchise, not doing what it takes to build a WS contender.
1st round exit, if they’re lucky. 3rd in the division by ’23.

MikeS2
The White Sox were third in the league in OBP last year.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
And when would be the time to panic? The top two options who can play 2B are both gone. Taylor is overpriced. Sox don’t have the farm to get K. Marte, so he’d probably cost them Vaughn, or at least Crochet and several other guys. Sox haven’t traded Kimbrel to the Phillies for Segura yet, but they missed out on a potential A. Frazier deal. So, really, they have only one semi-palatable option in Segura left because they took a long nap after their turkey dinners. Sox will still be good enough to win the division, but I was hoping this would be an offseason of going all-in, not making one BP upgrade and re-signing a useful, but not extraordinary, utility player.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
“Sox haven’t traded Kimbrel to the Phillies for Segura yet”
And they won’t. Zero chance the Phillies even consider that deal.
thestatbook123
Why is every White Sox fan convinced that Kimbrel is getting traded?
His $16M is a bad deal, and it still makes zero sense that the White Sox picked up that option.
keysox
Wrong – look at Texas guys now
hyraxwithaflamethrower
BTV actually has the Phillies winning that trade in a moderate overpay. Segura is a useful player, but is expected to provide negative surplus value.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
BTV is an unmitigated joke, FWIW. It blows my mind how many people reference John Bitzer, who truly believes that “value” is linear.
Also, Bitzer has been caught, multiple times, fudging the numbers to force trades to fit his model.
It’s not a serious tool, by any means.
maximumvelocity
Problem is, they have a habit of adding other bench players who they tell us are starters and, then having to throw Leury the security blanket over the bad signing.

Chris Taylor probably next, or Josh Harrison or Galvis. Or some washed up vet they get for Kimbrel.
Overpay for relievers, try to solve other issues on the cheap. It’s the White Sox way.

i can see the resigning of a role player. I question whether three years was necessary.
cwsOverhaul
Doubt they pay retail prices some other clubs are going nuts with the last few days. Not necessarily a bad thing. Suspect they’ll go hard after Ketel Marte and his 3yrs of reasonable level pay….with Vaughn the headliner being given up. Sheets power lefty bat roster needs more can be heir apparent 1B to Abreu anyhow.
DanielDannyDano
Three years? Not so surprising. A super positive influence in the clubhouse, a switch-hitter who capably plays all over the diamond on a moment’s notice, Garcia is the new Chris Taylor, only cheaper. Much cheaper.
chopper2hopper
Just stop commenting. Please. Just stop.

I appreciate what Leury did for the 2021 Sox. Not enough to give him 3 years, but whatever. The rate’s not going to be ridiculous.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I don’t mind it, provided it’s not some ridiculous $5.5M/yr or something stupid. Every team needs a swiss army knife player. Not many people play more positions than he does.

Well he was making $3.5 mil.
He deserves a raise!

roccleuzz
LG is just insurance if you can’t trade Kimbrel for a 2nd or sign Taylor. We’re we all expecting the Sox to spend $58 million on Hendriks last year? I think NOT. I still think there is a surprise coming. Will it be Taylor? Will it be Story, will it be a MAJOR TRADE? Hahn will have a deal done right after the lockout. Taylor is a great fit and give the Sox 2 great utility men if necessary. Hahn has something up his sleeve, he always does, keep the faith. Did you expect getting Gravemen to create a shutdown bullpen from the 6th inning on? There one more big surprise coming.
maximumvelocity
What Hahn usually has up his sleeve is going cheap for an aging or never-was player in hopes that they pan out. They never do, which is why they have needed a RF, 2b and DH for pretty much all of his tenure as GM.
They sat out over the Thanksgiving frenzy, and I suspect they will pretty much take the same route this year, with someone like Conforto or Taylor. Good players, but not the type that move the needle and there are signs of regression with both.
This is why the team is always three bats short of being a legit contender. They need to stop throwing money down the drain and sign a legit solution to these problems, as they did with catcher.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I blame Reinsdorf for the past-their-prime signings or trade targets. It’s been the Sox’ MO since well before Hahn.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
Hahn is the one signing these deals, and he’s the one going before the media and making comments in approval to said deals.
Blaming deals you don’t like on Reinsdorf is silly and evidence that many White Sox fans aren’t willing to embrace the truth that Rick Hahn isn’t as good of a GM as they think.
BeeVeeTee
Hahn has been a great general manager since he took over in 2013. Hahn made significant trades to international signings to draft picks to get the White Sox where they are right now. Prove me wrong!
maximumvelocity
Hahn has two winning seasons and no playoff series victories in eight years.
That is not a great record.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
He wasn’t allowed to tear down until after 2016, then spent 2017-2019 rebuilding. I’ll admit that I wish they’d won a playoff series last year or this year, but he had his marching orders before that to make the team competitive without tearing it down. The build of those teams is on Ken Williams and Reinsdorf.
As for Hahn being a great GM, I’d say he’s just solid. Obviously, the Tatis, Jr. trade couldn’t have turned out worse, but nobody knew at the time how great he’d be. That trade was stupid for a whole other reason: namely that they were getting Shields back to help a team whose star was already fading. The Madrigal trade was also really dumb and would have been even if Kimbrel had kept performing. But then, he got good returns for Sale, Eaton, and Q and signed Robert. It’s tempting to be mad at him for the Sox not doing much so far, but he doesn’t set the budget. Overall, I give him a solid B, maybe B+.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
“Hahn is the one signing these deals, and he’s the one going before the media and making comments in approval to said deals.”
That’s one of the dumbest comments I’ve read on here in a while. Most employees have these people called ‘bosses’ who tell them what to do and ‘jobs’ that they’d like to keep by saying the right things about their bosses and the company. Reinsdorf was signing washed up sluggers long before Hahn ever got here, even before Ken Williams. It’s just part of the Sox’ MO, which has decreased significantly since Hahn was given more control after the 2016 season.
soxitis
I hope that surprise is a strong lh bat in right field.
ChiSox_Fan
I have a bad feeling it’s Kris Bryant joining the Sox.
But he is a RH batter. Ugh.
But a Chicago fan favorite (mostly north side).
Also Sox will sign Rodon.
maximumvelocity
I will gladly take Kris Bryant, because he hits RHP just fine, and has never had extreme splits. Better that than conforto, who couldn’t hit LHP last year
hyraxwithaflamethrower
TBH, I wouldn’t mind that. KB is an upgrade and, if the Sox had to, they could move him back to 3B and shift Moncada. I know it’s not Moncada’s best position, but he used to stink at 3B when he first moved. That leaves them with a Vaughn/Sheets platoon in RF. And, of course, should Sheets or Vaughn struggle or get hurt, KB can be an OF. It’s not the ideal scenario, obviously, but it’s better than the gaping hole they have at 2B now.
As for re-signing Rodon, yes, please. I wouldn’t go beyond two years with a team option on a third, but when he was healthy, he was arguably the best pitcher in the AL.
msqboxer
Every team needs a multi-position bench player that can fill in and give starters off days. I’m sure the Sox kicked the tires on Taylor and some others and didn’t want to go 4 years and probably twice as much for Taylor. If Garcia hits .260, plays average defense and PH that’s all they need from him. They can still look at 2B options, just don’t chase the market right now.
cyyoung24
I’ve seen this movie before. He’s the starter at 2nd or RF. This team continues to defy all logic.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Not if you consider Reinsdorf’s primary goal is to make money. He’s now built a contending team that’s starting to get some good ticket sales, but going to the playoffs every year for the next 3 is enough. Then he’ll have Hahn put on a sad face and tell the media how he regrets the Sox just couldn’t get over the hump and now have to start a rebuild. Meanwhile, JR has pocketed another half billion and can afford an even nicer headstone when his time comes.
tcav1222
Leury was arguably one of our most valuable players last season…I’m okay with this move. Always could use a solid utility man on your team in case of injuries. Hahn needs to make an impactful move tho to get us to compete for a WS, it’s time to go all in.
maximumvelocity
The fact that a guy like Leury Garcia is a valuable player speaks to the failure of the team to actually address issues with starting talent.
tcav1222
Sox have tons of starting talent? I’m sure every team in the MLB would love a guy like Leury Garcia, he’s not a starter but he has value. I take it your a Cubs fan trolling ??
hyraxwithaflamethrower
The truth is somewhere between you two. Garcia would be valuable to most teams because every team needs a good utility player. That said, he’s more valuable to the Sox than he ought to be because they’ve failed to get Semien, Baez, or Taylor or a proven RF. They have enough in-house options at RF that I can live with that idea, but there’s no excuse for not having upgraded 2B. I know Sox fans, myself included, didn’t really want Baez because of the streakiness and K’s, but he’s still a much, much better player than Leury.
tcav1222
I would have loved Baez for 2B don’t care about his strikeouts, or low OBP, he would have been a defensive wizard for us at 2B and hit 7th in this lineup. Definitely would have been a massive upgrade at 2B and make me forgot about how terrible the madrigal trade was. Best FA option out there for 2B would be probably Taylor or Story for the Sox.
ChiSox_Fan
No, Baez has an attitude issue.
Classicfinder
Relax. This is a depth signing for someone you know. It should not preclude them from whatever their plan is on other signings. The years don’t matter and if that extra year lowered the yearly average, then it is probably a good move.
chopper2hopper
Again, why do people care so much about the cost of the contract or what the yearly average is? Stop playing fantasy GM or fantasy owner and hold them accountable when they sign mediocre players (leury, Eaton last year, trading for mazara, etc, etc, etc)) relative to what is or was available to them during a time of contention (semien). This franchise has a lot of people fooled into thinking they cannot afford top tier players, or that certain top tier players aren’t worth it. The point of it all is to get better and win. Leury garcia does not make you any better than you were yesterday.
All of this to say: Prioritize finding the guy he fills in for in a pinch (because apparently he does so well with that) and stop fooling Sox fans into thinking it’s a treat to lock in a mediocre-at-best player long term.
ChiSox_Fan
Why do you care so much that others care?!
Get lost!
chopper2hopper
I care because I like the team and want them to get better. Worrying about what Jerry reinsdorf pays leury garcia doesn’t make them any better, not do I find the fun in it. I’m all ears if you’d care to explain that one to me, that is until I get lost.
ChiSox_Fan
Sox are already committed to $175mil or so for 2022.
A big signing (or two) will put them over $200mil.
CluHaywood
I don’t understand how you don’t understand that you can’t just throw money at every player and have them all come here. 1) it is completely unrealistic in a competitive market. 2) This isn’t The Show. Guys don’t automatically just say yes. 3) most of the contracts issued so far have been ludicrously stupid and gross overpayment for guys in their decline or straight up in their twilight years. 4) All Star teams on paper and winning the off season mean precisely jacks***. Please see Padres for the past 2 years, or Yankees for the past decade+
chopper2hopper
I’m in agreement with you. You can’t just throw money at every player and expect them all to sign here. But one would be nice for a change.

I hear the Cubs offering Heuer, Madrigal, and Contreras for Kimbrel.
Makes sense to me.

Sox will have Oscar Colas to play RF soon!
Why would they sign some other aging veteran to play RF and hold Colas back?!!
chopper2hopper
Oscar colas has never seen a major league pitch nor has he seen a professional pitch in over a year. He is not an option to help a team with World Series aspirations win in the present. I sincerely hope he has a bright future but I’m more concerned about not getting wrecked in the first round again.
ChiSox_Fan

HBan22
Don’t know why so many seem to be hating on this deal. As long as the AAV isn’t too high and he’s not the starting 2B, this is a fine move. He’s a very solid utility player.
jhomeslice
The reason people are hating the deal is because they have so far done nothing to address ANY of their obvious needs, and fans are sick of waiting for them to do something to address them, while all the good free agents go to other teams!
David Barista
The White Sox need to do better at second base than Leury Garcia… love this player as a bench piece, but the team needs to fill the hole they created by trading Madrigal… I expect Sheets or Vaughn to get traded
CluHaywood
Vaughn legit looks like he could play OF. I expect to see Rodon signed, and Vaughn Sheets Platooned in RF. I just don’t have faith they will make an impact signing.
David Barista
Vaughn looked solid in LF, and while I think he has the arm for RF his range at that position is questionable… Both he and Sheets are still developing at MLB level and need playing time… Just seems like it’s time to consolidate some assets
ChiSox_Fan
Vaughn doesn’t need range in the OF.
Robert can cover entire OF by himself!!
ChiSox_Fan
Jake Burger can also play 2B.
He and Romy can fight it out for 2B job!!
David Barista
Is Jake Burger the Dan Uggla of second baseman?
maximumvelocity
Jake Burger has played five games his entire career at 2B, and has a fielding percentage of 895.
No, he cannot play second base. He”s barely passable at third base.
David Barista
LOL…. was Uggla passable? I thought he had an awful reputation in the field and just slugged bombs? Even Andrew Vaughn played a few innings at 2B last year, but I sure hope and don’t expect the Sox would ever plug a guy like Vaughn or Burger in at 2B
BeeVeeTee
A team like the Yankees is over the luxury tax threshold and looking to make a few moves. Don’t be surprised if the White Sox and Yankees make a move involving Anderson and Sheets for Torres and Gallo. The Yankees get a short stop they can control for three years without breaking the bank before they bring up Volpe in a few years while moving on from Torres and Gallo. The Yankees have a crowded outfield with Hicks coming back while Sheets can get a shot to play first base at a low salary. Vaughn is the White Sox’s future first baseman once Abreu calls it quits or just plays a full time DH. The White Sox replace Anderson to play short stop with Torres until Yolbert Sanchez is ready in a year or two while getting that much needed power bat in right field and glove with Gallo for a year until the Cespedes is ready.
Meanwhile the Phillies are in need of a closer and looking to move either Gregorius or Segura. Gregorius is on his walk year while Segura has a club option for 2023. A move like this frees up money for the Phillies to sign someone else to play the outfield and give one of their young prospects a shot in the infield.
Its just analysis on moving players to freeing space in the forty man roster along with these teams staying under the luxury tax threshold.
msqboxer
You typed a lot of words for something that will NEVER happen. Tim Anderson isn’t going anywhere! He is basically the face of this franchise and why on gods earth would I want Torres and Gallo?
BeeVeeTee
Wrong! Abreu is the face of the franchise! Jiminez and Robert are the faces of the White Sox’s future. Its plain and simple. Abreu plays hurt while Anderson misses games due to “injuries”.
BeeVeeTee
Lets not forget Anderson sat out most of the last month when the White Sox needed him to play to get home field advantage! Anderson missed 40 games this past season. We can argue that Moncada carried the White Sox’s offense in the beginning of the season with Jimenez having surgery and Robert missing time.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I’d want Gallo if the price was right. Great defense, gets on base, lots of power. Lot of K’s, too, but you live with those to get the rest of it. This isn’t the right price, though.
ChiSoxCity
Hahahahaha….
BeeVeeTee
HAHAHHA to my analysis or Anderson being the face of the franchise over Abreu. People tend to forget that the White Sox gave out a contract to Anderson like the one they did with Sale.
tcav1222
Trade anderson lmao! He’s going to get another big deal from the Sox he’s not going anywhere he’s the new face of the Sox once Abreu is gone… I got a trade for you how about Leury to the Yankees for gerrit cole ? Sounds fair and logical.
BeeVeeTee
tcav1222, you really must not follow the White Sox to believe Anderson is going to be the next face of the White Sox if or when Abreu retires! There is more hype around Jimenez and Robert than there is with Anderson with being the future of the White Sox. Rick Hahn brought in Robert’s former teammate, Yolbert Sanchez, who plays short stop along with other Cuban players to be on the White Sox in the future. There is not doubt Anderson is a good baseball player but he is being overhyped by the media, not a really good lead off man, takes off too much time due to injuries while playing his position where he sat out this past season when the White Sox needed him in the last month of the season to get home field advantage and he is a little cocky!
msqboxer
But yet you suggest an Anderson to the Yankees trade because he’s overhyped? The overhyped is Torres and Gallo not Anderson. If Anderson was a free agent right now he’d be getting $200M.
Yankee Clipper
Actually BVT, I read more than one article which posited a potential Anderson-to-the-Yankees trade scenario as a possibility, so you may not be that far off. The logic was in fact that that Yankees get their SS while ChiSox continue their build around young talent and can explore potential FA signings if they choose to as well.
BeeVeeTee
msqboxer, Anderson is overhyped since he won the batting title in 2019 after missing a significant amount of games and sat out the last few games to win it. Self centered player who is about himself with missing crucial games in the last month of this past season which was one of the reasons that cost the White Sox home field advantage. Anderson’s defense is below mediocre since that was one of his flaws once the White Sox drafted. Anderson hurts himself while playing defense. Also, Anderson led the MLB in errors for short stops in 2019 when missed a lot of games
Anderson started to hit once the White Sox signed Yolbert Sanchez in 2019. Sanchez is from Cuba, plays short stop and is a former teammate with Robert on Cuba’ national team. Robert is locked up for long term unlike Anderson. Think about this one and get back to me!
BeeVeeTee
Yankee Clipper, most people that comment on here don’t understand luxury tax to the teams’ needs or future assets along with high market teams helping each other get under the luxury tax threshold. Logic is not a common theme on this platform! Just people not realizing the things mentioned above are huge factors with teams!
BeeVeeTee
msqboxer, Anderson is overhyped and anyone that believes he is the face of the White Sox does not know what he or she is speaking about when it comes to the White Sox franchise. Yes, Anderson is good but the delusional White Sox fans’ overhype him as the future when damn well us White Sox fans that know how the franchise operates does not think that all. Anderson is a movable piece just like Sale with a team friendly contract. Hahn is building the team around Jimenez, Robert, Vaughn and Moncada for the next three years. Sanchez will be a part of it along with other Cuban players. People tend to forget the White Sox are very high on their Cuban players.
David Barista
What games did Anderson sit out to win the batting title? I remember him having a 4 hit game in the final week of the season in 2019. I don’t agree that Anderson is selfish and him resting final month cost the team home field. I think the WS acquired Yolbert Sanchez as a possible 2B option, but the guy doesn’t seem to be hitting enough for a promotion
BeeVeeTee
Did you look at Yolbert Sanchez’s numbers this past season in A and AA ball to make that assumption? Sanchez had a .306 average for the year and batted .343 in AA. That’s pretty darn good for his full season playing in the minor leagues and facing developing pitchers in AA.
msqboxer
Apparently you don’t know the White Sox very well. Anderson’s contract covers the next 3 years for a total of $36M, which fits right into your statement of Hahn and the next 3 years. Yolbert Sanchez is a prospect that appears to be making his way to the bigs, thus the reason why he spent half of his time at 2B down in Arizona this fall.
BeeVeeTee
Actually, the White Sox have the contracts of Jimenez, Robert and Moncada starting to kick in with big raises from this year into the nexy few years while Giolito has two years of arbitration left before he hits free agency, while Keuchel’s clause for pitching over 160 innings this year for the White Sox to pick up his $20 million for 2023 is a big concern. I am pretty sure I know the White Sox players contracts better than you.
BeeVeeTee
MSQBOXER, you have a low iq with baseball and contracts. I suggest you stop before you look dumb as Dogbone. The White Sox are just below the luxury tax threshold and their payroll is only going to get higher every year from 2022 and beyond with the commitments to Moncada, Jimenez and Robert while keeping some of their pitchers around.
tcav1222
He is arguably one of the best hitters on the team, how dare you say I don’t watch my sox.. huge fan I’ve stuck around watching them even when they were bad for 10+ years… if anderson hit the market right now he would get $200M+ how is he an overhyped lead off man when he’s hit roughly .310-.320 last 2-3 years??? dude is only getting better, he’s scratching the surface of being in his prime right now. Don’t give me that BS about he doesn’t take walks.. blah, blah, blah, doesn’t matter when you’re consistently hitting over .300. I get Robert might be the best player on the team, but your take is so bad…first player people will recognize and mention when Abreu is gone, is Tim Anderson. Overhyped lmao
tcav1222
Beevee you keep mentioning about TA numbers in 2019 that doesn’t reflect on what kind of player he is today, quit living in the past that was 3 years ago… you’re clown.
msqboxer
BeeVeeTee, Right now CWS are projected at about $170M for 2022 with arb deals, $138M 2023 with the need to account for Giolito, Cease and Kopech arb cases and $117M in 2024 with Giolito, Cease, Kopech, Crochet and Vaughn arb cases. The rest of the core is signed. Even if you gave them all $10M (which won’t happen) you’ll be under the luxury tax every year. Nice thing about IQ is, you can increase it by doing the research.
BeeVeeTee
tcav2122, just watch and see the White Sox move Anderson. Anderson missed a huge chunk of games in the last month of this past season due to some “injury”. Guess what, Anderson choose to sit out those games when the Sox were trying to win home field advantage in the playoffs. This was not a decision made by La Russa or Hahn or Williams but Anderson to take himself out of the line up a bunch if times in the last month.
Anderson is going to make $9.5 million this upcoming season then make $12 million next season on a club option and $14 million club option in 2023. This is a very friendly team contract, especially for a team like the Yankees or Phillies, especially the Yankees. This is the same type of contract given to Sale and Quintana which the Sox traded away for Moncada, Kopech, Jimenez and Cease.
At the same time, people say Anderson is only getting better but forget to mention the batters around him are making him better. The White Sox adding guys like Moncada, Jimenez, Robert and Grandal to the line up since 2019 have been beneficial to Anderson to seeing pitches which is why his statistics gotten better since 2019. Prior to that Anderson played in 153 games in 2018 and batted .240, but only missed 9 games in 2018 unlike the 38 games he missed in both the 2019 and 2021 seasons.
Anderson is very replaceable even if means adding Gleybar Torres with a trade with the Yankees while the White Sox wait on Yolbert Sanchez develop one more year and the Yankees wait on Volpe to develop with Anderson at the short stop position for three years at $36 million. By the way, Yolbert Sanchez can play both SS and 2B while considered a very good fielder.
BeeVeeTee
MSQBOXER, you are wrong again about the payroll.
spotrac.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/payroll/
dazedatnoon
Anderson is huge in the community. That’s why I have a TA12 jersey. Before you all was fans….
msqboxer
BeeVee my evaluation was using Sportrac and it is 100% correct.
BeeVeeTee
dazedatnoon, most of the White Sox players and their wives or significant others do a lot around the Chicago land area. Tim Anderson is the face with trying to get baseball back in urban communities throughout Chicago but Kenny Williams has been behind this for over ten years. This is nothing new if you have been following the White Sox for years. Tim Anderson is great for the team At the national and international levels, players like Robert, Moncada and Jimenez are the new faces of the White Sox.
tcav1222
You are just speaking a bunch of nonsense man, why in the hell would the white Sox who is currently a contender in the American League trade one of their best players at this time that has 3 years of control??? This isn’t mlb the show bro. Where are your sources that you can even back all this information… you claim that Sanchez will be up next year ??? Dude he’s like 3 years away. They traded away sale yeah on a team friendly contract when they weren’t even being competitive… do you listen to the junk that your coming up with? It’s asinine.
tcav1222
BVT I will be waiting for this trade to happen since you’re most certain it will go down! lol 0.0000% this will happen.
BeeVeeTee
MSQBOXER, if you used spotrac than you would see the White Sox are $15 million under the Luxury Tax Threshold, however, the White Sox need to fill in other positions and that amount will not help. The lock out is upon us and once negotiations stop it then we shall see what happens. Odds are the White Sox, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers and Red Sox will be making trades once both the owners and players union figure out the economic mess some teams are in right now. Tim Anderson’s contract is controllable for a team looking to upgrade at short stop without breaking the bank. Hahn is the type of general manager to make a move like that since he is main focus is buildng around Jimenez, Moncada and Robert from next few years.
BeeVeeTee
TCAV2122, Sánchez is 24 years old and his ETA is 2023. Currently, Sanchez is not on the 40 man roster where will start 2022 in AA then be promoted to AAA in month or so. Sanchez was outstanding in his full season in the minor leagues. Again, the White Sox bringing in Sánchez after bringing his former Cuban teammate is a sure sign that he is going to be on the team. Sanchez can play short stop.
Meanwhile Anderson is good then started to get better when other players joined the White Sox. Moncada’s emergence at the plate is a huge factor to Anderson’s success from 2019 to now. The numbers don’t lie when Moncada gets the pitches for the hitters in front and behind him get pitches to hit since he is hard at bat for opposing pitchers. Moncada was third in OBP in the American League and ninth overall in baseball in 2021. Example for the importance of OBP is how Marcus Semien benefited with getting a huge deal in free agent year while batting around Guerrero in Toronto.
The White Sox could have been a dangerous offensive team in 2021 if injuries did not occur in the season to Jimenez, Robert and Madigral. Leury stepped up big time. Moncada helped a lot with drawing walks and guys behind him getting hits. Meanwhile the one thing about Anderson people don’t mention how he sat out games in the last month when the White Sox had a legit chance to get home field. There were games when he was in the line up in the last month then he decided to sit out right before the game.
Anderson is guaranteed $9.5 million in 2022. Thats a huge factor for him if he wants to his $12 million picked up in 2023, which he better stay healthy and not miss over 30 games like he did in 2019 and 2022.
Franco22
Why did the Sox draft 4 shortstops this year. They are tired of the tired legs theory TA promotes. The very best shortstops played more than 120 games in a year. While TA may have improved defensively he wasn’t around to make any errors. So his season was a wash. TA and his agent are watching what SS’s are getting this year in free agency. TA didn’t play because he is shaping his defensive stats for a huge contract at next signing. He’s an outfielder. At SS he at times is late to the bag and hot dog’s the double play relay by flipping the ball over to first late standing flat footed on the bag instead of routinely crossing the bag with more momentum to get a speedy runner. TA’s change the game BS. Trade him while you can get a team to buy his BS for some heart and soul for the position.
Franco22
BeeVee , Good post, but TA only played 120 games in 2021, he missed 42 games. No major league shortstop should have that stat. JP Crawford played 160 games that’s heart and durability for the position.
Franco22
BeeVee, you obviously can see through the hot dog TA change the game BS. The core of the Sox poor defensive play in the infield is TA. He hides the problem by sitting out games. Only 120 games in 2021 for an MLB SS, total Horse poop.
Franco22
tcav1222 , You are talking about a guy TA who called an opposing white player the N word. I haven’t forgotten that. Then a week later says he is the new Jackie Robinson, Who’s the clown with the circus act.
tcav1222
No he did not lol lemme see a reliable source that said he did, and he never said anything about being the new Jackie Robinson. He’s black and proud of it nothing wrong with that, go crawl in your racist hole you came from and return in 4 years when you can vote for your beloved trump.
Franco22
tcav1222, Here is the New York post source sparky.

tcav1222, here is the SI article, wants to change the game by calling opposing white pitchers the N word.

Peart of the game
This could be a decent move if the AAV isn’t that high.

3/16 is what they are saying.

Pay a portion of Kimbrel’s contract and flip him for a prospect to add in a package to acquire Ketel Marte.
mike127
daze—if you are getting Ketel Marte the White Sox are adding probably multiple prospects or major league ready talent with Kimbrel……I am hoping that you meant to say “with” not “for”. Vaughn and Kimbrel is probably not enough to get Marte unless the Sox are paying a significant portion of that Kimbrel money.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Diamondbacks have no use for Kimbrel and no desire to part with Marte.
So assuming you mean trade Kimbrel to a third team for a prospect, and then use that prospect as part of package to Dbacks, well good luck getting much for Kimbrel unless you pay a good chunk of his salary.
dazedatnoon
Philly or Mets can get Kimbrel and give up prospect, Sox use that to put a package together for Marte.
GarryHarris
My second correct prediction
MLB Top 100 Commenter
It would have been fun if for a month MLBTR could have had the number of correct free agent predictions next to poster’s names.
kwolf68
No power, no speed, average hitter, forgets to cover 2B, signed to 3 years so LaRussa can have his favorite toy back.
"Not" Rick Hahn
You’re welcome!
Franco22
kwolf68, grow up and learn baseball, you are not a HOF manager. Just a misguided child !
"Not" Rick Hahn
I did it again sox fans! Sing my praises across the land!
Sideline Redwine
No offense to Leury Garcia, but let’s not mention him in the same breath as Ben Zobrist. No comparison.
dbogs2000
Fine. A good plug in piece when you need it. Better than Danny Mendick. You need more talent. You traded Madrigal and are stuck with Kimbrell, who never performed. Lets get something tangible for what we have and move forward or your just another one and done team come play offs. You need more to make it over the edge.
Franco22
It’s tough to have great stats when you are asked to be a pro ball player playing 5 different positions. So people need to get off the stats soap box. Leury is worth more to the Sox than TA who missed 42 games. TA won’t move to the outfield to help the team because he feels he’s too important for that. His legs and mind, and heart are too weak for a leadership role. Leury is just the opposite, strong heart, mind, and legs to say put me in coach I can play there if you need me. Tony has got it right. The young people on this blog don’t have what Leury has, they buy into the TA BS and avoid work. Glad the Sox kept him, they will repeat and be there again. TA is not the face of the Sox, Leury is the quiet soul of the blue collar southsiders who win by working not by creating a self supporting false media hype. Durable shortstops play more than 120 games, TA isn’t one of them.
msqboxer
Apparently TA must have kicked your dog or something. He missed games due to injury and the Sox having the luxury of resting him until he was 100%. If your assessment is games played as being a leader than I guess Tatis and Lindor are just as bad as TA in your eyes since they played 130 games.
maximumvelocity
Right.
Let’s just trade TA and put Garcia at SS, and see how things go then. And then bring back Yolmer for 2b. He has lots of heart too.
Time to get in the 21st century. Heart doesn’t win baseball games.
Franco22
maximumvelocity, correct trade TA for a real MLB SS that want’s to play more than 120 games.
Franco22
msqboxer, TA is no role model or leader. I haven’t forgotten the bat flip scandal where he called the opposing white pitcher from KC the N word, then had the nerve to say he was the new Jackie Robinson the following week. If you or I did that we would be out of baseball, he got away with it with never apologizing acting as if everybody owed him something. He harbors hate now quietly because his next free agent contract could be over 250 million. Then you will hear his BS. Guys like TA are cowardly politicians , all hype, all talk, along with the other arrogant SS you mention. It is not a credible club of SS’s anymore. The Sox have had more credible SS’s in their history of MLB
Spare Tire Dixon
Obviously the top free agents are fun to discuss, but I think Rosario and Kyle Seager would be good fits for Chicago. Lefty bats to balance out the lineup a bit. Moncada to 2B?
Franco22
Unfortunately the lockout changes everything now .
Spare Tire Dixon
Josh Harrison was sitting right there.
Spare Tire Dixon
Should the White Sox explore a trade for Cavan Biggio? He would give them a LH bat and an option for 2B or RF.
