Freddie Freeman Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes | March 14, 2022 at 4:56pm CDT

Freddie Freeman’s 12-year run with Atlanta came to a close Monday afternoon, as the Braves acquired slugging first baseman Matt Olson from the Athletics.  With the Yankees pessimistic on their chances of signing Freeman, here’s the latest…

  • The Blue Jays have conveyed serious interest in Freeman, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.  On Friday Morosi suggested Freeman’s signing was imminent and said the Dodgers were making a strong push.
  • The Rays and Jays “have remained aggressive” on Freeman, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter thread) notes that rival clubs perceive the Jays as a threat to utilize some of their available payroll space to make a splash on the offense. He also suggests the Yankees could make sense as a Freeman suitor, but notes that it’s unclear if ownership wants to take on a long-term deal when they’re hoping to work out a long-term extension with Aaron Judge at some point down the line.

Sign with Dodgers already, you don’t want to play in Canada. California taxes are bad but Canadian taxes are worse.

One of Freddie Freeman’s parents is from Canada. He has family there and he chose to play for Canada over USA in the World Baseball Classic. I’m sure he would love to play there. They have a first baseman, though. I doubt Freeman cares about the taxes but if he did he wouldn’t choose California. He would choose Florida. They have no state income tax. I think he will sign with the Dodgers because it makes the most sense. I doubt Tampa Bay forks over enough cash to get it done.

@Steve, I hope he chooses Canada because I would hate to compete against him regularly.

Just learned he has dual citizenship and he played for Team Canada. That said, I thought he was staying in Atlanta so until he signs, I’m thinking there are more teams involved than we know of. If not, the deal would have been done to steal back the back page tomorrow in Atlanta. That said, stop the Rays’ nonsense.

          –
          This again……..

Two large states have no state income tax – Texas and Florida. They both have large state governments including buildings, employees, and equipment that provide services. The money to finance that does not come out of thin air. Both have large property taxes (a friend recently sold his house in Houston to leave Texas because his property taxes were higher than his mortgage), and large sales taxes as well as “fees”.

There is no free lunch (unless you work for the government). You heard it here first.

As a Braves fan this hurts, but signing Olson may be another genius move by AA. After his outfield signings in 2021, it’s hard to disagree with him. I’m all in

most fans wanted him to stay in Atl., just because loyalty to fanbase is appreciated. But picking up Olson (who is really good) might have been the smarter move for improving the team. Assuming they invest the saved $ into winning.

        • Bochys Retirement Fund

Brew88, that’s where I was at after the Olson signing. It’s a hard choice for the optical sake with the fans. But Olson has a the greater longevity and is also an insane defensive 1st baseman.

Also does free up money for the key players in that WS victory.

        • Weasel 2

Olson is the better investment due to age. And it’s not close. The problem is that freeman only costs cash while Olson cost a number of good prospects.

From a WAR perspective the braves did great. But the As are pretty satisfied today too Id think.

        • FredMcGriff for the HOF

@curly. This has been a sad evening for me as well with Freddie leaving. I figured he’d be the next Chipper but it appears money matters more. After looking at the roster with Olson included and assuming Ozuna is the DH I figure this is still a good team that is missing a 1 regular outfielder also assuming Acuna will be ready come opening day. Hopefully they resign Rosario or Soler. I’m not high on Joctober as he doesn’t stay in the best physical shape. I can see them rolling out one of Travis Demeritte /Drew Waters/or Trey Harris. Losing Shea Langeliers is a big blow too. Hopefully AA did the right thing here. I guess there is the extra pick do to losing Freddie with him rejecting the QO….

        • samthebravesfan

It’s okay. The only one they might miss is Langeliers. We’ll see how the pitchers turn out.

        • TinRoof288

I think this is completely stupid by ATL. Nothing against Olson who I think is a great player no doubt. But anyone who believes this is about money is sadly mistaken. This was never about money. The man wanted a 6 year contract and even stated he was willing to take less money for 6 years, but the idiots in Liberty Media refused to do it. AA wanted to do it, Snitker wanted to do it, but not the morons that own the team! Ownership forced AA’s hand and he had to do something he truly did not want to do. Freddie earned the right for the contract he wanted. The man could’ve left after 2014 for more money but stayed in ATL during the lean years of 2015-2017 and this is how you repay him by not giving the man one extra year on his contract? Gimme a break! The guy was more than just what he did on the field. He was the clubhouse leader! The players begged upper management to re-sign him during the WS parade. That should tell everyone all they need to know about the person, player, and teammate Freddie Freeman is! Then , since you don’t want to give him 6 years, you trade away 4 of your top 14 prospects for plan B at 1B and one of those prospects is the #1 catcher prospect in MLB and was your future every day catcher? The Braves lost a fan today in me! I’ll never root for them again, and I hope they lose every game they play! Freddie offered to be as unselfish as he possibly could, just wanted one more year and was never about money! Shame on the Braves’ owners. They can go fly a kite as far as I’m concerned. What happens when you cut the head off the snake? THE BODY DIES! And the Braves just cut the head off the snake in my opinion. Come back and holler at me everyone when mid August rolls around and the Braves are 55-65 and about 15 games out of 1st! I guarantee you every player in that clubhouse for ATL right now is mad beyond belief!

I’m thinking he doesn’t go to the Dodgers. My guess, and it’s just that, is that LA is maybe trying to get him on a short term/high AAV deal like they tried with Harper. That generally has been their MO.

And maybe Freeman is interested in that type of deal, but most guys want more security, and at Freeman’s age, I’d bet he doesn’t want to go to free-agency again in a couple years.

I could be totally wrong about that and LA is willing to go 4, 5, or 6 years. If so, yeah he’s probably a Dodger.

Tab- I hope hope hope hope hope you are correct.

It would be so uninteresting really in the grand scheme. My 1 hope left for free agency is Freeman doesn’t ink with us , well that and Correa gets hosed!

I think baseball takes a small hit overall if he inks with LAD

Id personally rather keep the money more in the family for later with Buehler Urias Belli Muncy Smith and possibly Tre (adopted) coming up

I love Freddy Freeman as well, he’d be a great fit in Toronto or Nyy currently . Also Sf , they got the books wide open and Belt can play corner OF- Surprised haven’t heard any Boston interest, they have some need and wide open payroll 23 and beyond as well….Just not LAD please, let’s continue this positive upward MLB vibe momentum

I’ll never understand why so many fans want to play team CFOs. What are you doing trying to keep track of their money? Aren’t the teams a whole lot better at knowing how much they have to spend now and in the future than any fan will be, like, ever? After the Yanks were knocked out in the WC game, I didn’t watch the playoffs. Started watching again game 2 of the series. Loved what I saw out of Freddie Freeman. Ducky — As a Giants fan, it’s a conundrum that we already have a terrific LH offensive 1b with a great glove or I’d hope SF would be in on Freddie. But since that’s the case, I’m rooting for the Yankees (which I seldom do) or the Rays.

In no way do I want Freddie on the Dodgers.

Duck, as a Braves fan I am saddened by Freeman’s departure, & ecstatic by the addition of Olson. I would like to see Freeman as a Yankee, or a Blue Jay, I don’t want to compete against him. LAD has too many names in their lineup. Freeman could get lost in the mix

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

A top half of; LeMahieu, Judge, Stanton, Donaldson, & Freeman would be a problem for opposing pitching staffs, serious.

Add in Gallo & Higgy’s power, Hicks’ patience, & Kiner-Falefa’s speed, & we will put up our share of runs. While (finally, once again) playing excellent defense. Freeman fits us perfectly. & – for us – I would rather hold onto our prospects for possible catching help &/or a SP for some rotation stability.

        • BlueSkies_LA

The real difference between what I am saying and you are saying is I admit to not knowing what I can’t know, so I move onto what I do know. In this case, it’s that the Dodgers understand their finances way better than any fan possibly could, and that the Dodgers would be a better team with Freeman than without him. My comment wasn’t meant to be a fashion statement, or deep, merely accurate.

20 SB & caught 5 times too. He can add something to our offense. Especially if we can bat him out of the 9th spot. He has grown on me as I have looked into him.

This too: in 193 AB’s Higgy hit 10 jacks. Gary had 23…but in nearly 200 more ABs. 20+ home runs might be within his range.

        • BlueSkies_LA

Just what Id do if I was them, also think its bad for baseball in a small regard opposed to what it could be.. It would be a lot more exciting seeing him lead a buncha youngsters in Toronto Imo

If we can’t have those provisions to post on here there isn’t going to be many posts made

Full disclaimer- It bothers me so many outsiders think we are just a sign superstar free agent team. Despite having developed Kershaw Urias Buehler Maeda Ryu Kenley Bellinger Taylor Muncy Lux Turner Seager Will Smith etc etc etc ……….

Id rather just pay more of them later than ink Freddy today, and that’s painful to say because FF is awesome but it just adds fuel to this dumb narrative that somehow exists today

I love the internal makings of this team, and with some of the cleanest ledgers we have had in years coming up soon we have a chance to really keep the band together for awhile. That’s special to me, that’s next level shizz

Ducky,. Yeah, its not terrible. I did reflect on something you mentioned – the A-hole factor with JD. I think that dude might light a spark in that clubhouse and hold dudes accountable where Booner might be failing. Like a Sgt. Maj. – commands more respect with the troops than the butter bars, ya know?

Plus, from what I read he’s super direct – like to a fault – and it causes tension, but those same guys want to play with him again, so it’s not detrimental.

Man, Freeman and either Murphy or Contreras too? Uh, wow. That’s a pretty good offseason, bro. I’d be pretty happy. Then we just make our annual deadline grab for pitching and go.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

After OCS I was a butter bar. So: yes. I know *exactly* what you mean. Heh.
No Gardy, no CC…yeah we could use some edge. Apparently Kiner-Falefa plays with a chip on his shoulder too. I absolutely respect the collected exterior. But we didn’t seem like a fiery or focused team last year.

The Twins plyers sure seem to have liked playing alongside him.

So just lay a starting pitcher aside til this summer? I can see that. & – straight up – “just” Rizzo & Contreras would comprise a fairly significant makeover. I am leaning that way as the day goes on.

Murphy is a guy the A’s’ll want to build around. Contreras will cost more in salary, but is listed at just 14 mil on BBTV. With the Cubs signing Gomes, I see him as much easier to get. & Rizzo + Contreras will be less in AAV than Freeman. Shorter commitments too. Which matters to Cash.

        • Yankee Clipper

Truth: So here’s my breakdown. Worst case, if Cash addresses catcher we walk away with JD, Contreras, Rizzo, & IKF. That’s pretty doable man. As a whole Cash addressed every single weakness but 1 (CF). So, all in all, not optimal, but a success nonetheless. And to your last point about commitments – yeah that will certainly matter.

And, my apologies for the butter bars bro – you would never strike me as *that guy*in communicating with you. I assume you worked your way up through the ranks then? You were not the prototypical college-to-OCS kid, right?

        • BlueSkies_LA

@cap. Where I’m disagreeing with you here is with the idea that if the Dodgers sign Freeman that they wouldn’t be able to afford to hang onto the others you mentioned. You don’t know that to be true. I believe the Dodgers can afford pretty much whom ever they want, and the only real restriction is self-imposed, and where they’ve set those limits we have no idea. I prefer not to guess.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

          Yup.
& we do still have Hicks. But my most optimistic hope for him is to play ~ 100 regular season games & be healthy for the playoffs. Now, you know I’m optimistic to a fault. & that’s the best even I can hope for.

Still wouldn’t mind some rotation stability, but that was way down on my list of priorities.

Oh, no. Look, I achieved the rank of captain. But I was absolutely a fresh out of college, whipped through OCS, 24 year old, know it all/complete dumb butter bar kid. No other way to put it. The Corps knows it is mostly inevitable & just hope you can get through it well enough.

Actually, I think they are pretty close, maybe slightly lower in Toronto.

In CA he can look forward to paying 13.3% in state taxes on top of his 37% federal taxes for just a hair over half his income accounted for.

In Toronto he’d have 33% in federal taxes plus whatever the provincial tax rate is 13% for a total of 46%.

I’m doing basic google searches for the Canada stuff, but all in all the tax rates don’t look like enough to swing a decision either way.

Be nice if you folks in the good ole USA would actually take the time to research something before making comments about something you know nothing about. Top Fed tax rate is in Canada is 3% less then USA. Ontario top tax rate is 13 % – Cali top tax rate is 13%. Anyone making more then 590k per year would pay less tax in Ontario vs California.

One must consider that the Braves current lineup would only feature one LH bat (Olson) with Albies as a switch. They could sign Rosario as another LH hitter who could start while Acuna is out, then platoon with Ozuna/Duvall. So why wouldn’t the Braves leave the offer on the table, sign Freddie as another big LH in the lineup and he and Olson take occasional days off from the field. Olson can play OF as well.. Wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. Then sign a 4th OF (or don’t as you have Heredia), sign Grienke and be done.

Signing Freeman checks a lot of boxes for Arte:

NO! Freddie got sick of waiting on the Braves to give him a 6 year contract. It was never about money! Why can’t everyone see that? He wanted to stay in ATL. The DA owners wouldn’t give him 6 years! He earned that right to get that! The man is a future HOFer probably and the best 1B in MLB, and he weathered quite a few lean years in 2015-2017 in ATL when he could’ve left for more money and the Braves Owners pi$$ed on him. It was blatantly obvious that AA had nothing to do with it. He wanted them to give Freddie the 6 years as did Snitker and obviously so did his teammates! Shame on the Braves! They’ve lost a fan in me, and I hope they go 0-162!

You’re letting emotion cloud your judgment. Teams just aren’t going to spend a lot of money on a guy like Freeman, with the result of having 2 guys that are limited to 1B/DH. Most teams aren’t going to go with a dedicated DH, and that’s virtually what you get with Olson/Freeman. The flexibility of having guys be able to play other positions besides DH is valuable. That money is better spent elsewhere.

Rays actually have a ton of flexibility in their budget and would likely offer a lower AAV but would definitely give him the years. Plus Florida is a tax haven. I don’t think it is likely but at the same time I wouldn’t say it’s totally ridiculous either. The fact they are still aggressive means he is listening to something they have to say.

Who knows the in’s and out’s at this point. Olson is on the Braves. 12 years is a long time but in this day and age guys don’t stick around. I said in another post, he was clearly angry about not getting a deal done prior to the 2021 season. I get on the ownership side with COVID and all about revenue and all that. I think back on Chipper like 94/95 ish when he said he would restructure to keep other players “ Andruw Jones”. In the end Chipper wanted to be a Brave and even said he left money on the table to do so.

Hey, Braves made a 5 year offer, he should have taken it. I don’t know if he’s going to get more… from the Dodgers or whomever. Olson’s shelve life is longer, 2 years younger… Not batting average, but power #’s are excellent for Olson… Even the draft picks are ok to trade… GM Alex is Savvy enough to overcome it…

The tax benefits to Florida would be appealing. The Rays are not a joke of a team at this point- they could potentially contend. They don’t have the illustrious cache of the Dodgers or the Yankees or Atlanta, but they’re not a joke, either. Would they really dig that deep and pay one guy $27-33M a season? They could argue that the tax situation in Florida is such that $200M in California is like $175M in Florida and they’d be willing to meet him at the pre-tax equivalent to get him to his goal money if Atlanta or the Dodgers had ponied up to his demands…. at this point Freeman may just be going after as much money as possible for his final career contract and be irritated with himself for the tens of millions he gave up to sign that initial eight year extension with Atlanta and he wants his money, one way or another…so if Tampa offered him a deal that got him to that point financially, he might just take the money…. Unless the Dodgers topped it in line with his tax burden in California…

All this goes ditto for Toronto or even the Yankees…. pay him whatever he expected to make playing and living in Atlanta on a $200M deal in accordance with your state/country’s tax burden and I think Freddie will sign with you.

So what if it’s not over yet? What if AA scooped Olson to prevent his asking price from going up if Freddie signed Else first? Sounds crazy but it’s possible. You could put Olson @ 1B, LF, or DH depending on the day. Keeping Freddie & Olson would help balance the lefty vs. righty aspect of the lineup. There’s also a possibility of signing Freddie & trading Olson to one of his original suitors. All snowballs in hell here but here’s to hope…

This is not his agent’s fault. Freddie has been steadfast in looking for 6 years at top money ($30M+ per year). He was given some very fair offers but he turned them down. He’s now in a spot that he’s probably only going to get 5 years guaranteed…not his agent’s fault at all.

It is his fault. Freeman should have had a deal by now, even if it wasn’t with the Braves.
Olsen was probably about to be traded elsewhere, so AA had to choices, trade for Olsen or risk missing out on Freeman and Olsen.
His agent should have been aggressively trying to find him a deal, sounds like he was waiting for the Braves to bid against themselves, and played chicken with the wrong GM.

Freddie’ didn’t want to leave. Not for a year’s worth of salary, after his kid has grown up in Atlanta and they have so many friends .there. His agency misread the market and forced Alex to make a pre-emptive strike. If the Dodgers got to Olson first, then Freeman’s people would have held Alex ho$tage.

Let’s face it, if Freddie wanted to stay, he would have.. With what he’s made, and what they were offering, Atlanta would have paid over 300 million in his career. Charlie’s grandkids would be fine with that. I believe the agents were going for top dollar but Alex acted quickly and now they have no leverage with either TOR or LAD.

Let’s see how this works out for the Freeman family — unless he calls Alex himself and says he’ll stay for 4yrs/120 million as 1B/DH. Alex will say yes, because they need lefty bats.

I could only read about half of the comments.

I’m a huge jays fan… and Freeman makes no sense, yet here the Jays are this late in the rumor game.

If Freeman were to sign with the Jays there would have to be a slew of moves (or one huge one) giving the man a place to play. guerrero is heavy negative dWAR if he plays 3b this year and is becoming gold glove caliber at 1b.

So… what? He DH’s with Guerrero and some others swapped through the season? The Jays were in 300MM territory with Seager before he signed… this is clearly a front office that means freaking business.

Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro (AA was just a sugar rush) have taken so much heat from the casual (read: idiotic) jays fan and i think they have turned toronto into a damn powerhouse NYY is jealous of, luxury tax bois. I want to give them utmost props for committing when they said they would and making this jays fan who not long ago was still shaking his head at the BJ Ryan deal feel like he’s watching a world series team spare no expense.

We don’t even have room for Freddie. Bow to the new kings of baseball management.

    Now to sign Jose Ramirez.

I figured this would happen. Always had doubts the Braves wanted to go in the 6/180 neighborhood. And while the Dodgers have absolutely spent under Friedman, they’ve avoided those long-term deals that pays players high salaries towards their mid-to-late 30’s (save for Mookie). I mean, they’ve let Grienke, Machado, Scherzer, and Seager all walk under Friedman and didn’t put a bid out on Harper when he was a free agent, so I always wondered if they’d actually give Freddie whatever he wants. Now, if he took a Bauer-type deal, sure. They’d do that.

Just funny how all of a sudden, here come all these other teams just when it seemed the Dodgers were the only landing spot. AA called the bluff.
