Red Sox Sign Dan Altavilla To Two-Year Minors Deal

By Mark Polishuk | March 16, 2022 at 1:37pm CDT

The Red Sox have signed right-hander Dan Altavilla to a two-year minor league contract, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link).  The length of the deal reflects Altavilla’s health status, as he underwent Tommy John surgery last June and will miss at least half of the 2022 season.

Between a season-opening calf injury and then his elbow problems, Altavilla only pitched 1 1/3 innings over two games with the Padres in 2021.  The righty has appeared in each of the last six MLB seasons, though in a somewhat limited capacity (116 total innings) that reflects his inconsistency.  Altavilla has a solid 26.1% strikeout rate over his career, but a 12.1% walk rate and 12.4% home run rate have limited his effectiveness out of the Seattle and San Diego bullpens.

With a fastball that averages 96.7 mph, Altavilla brings plenty of heat, and the Red Sox are betting that they can harness that potential once the right-hander is healthy.  Given the usual 12-15 month rehab period time for Tommy John patients, Altavilla could potentially return for a good portion of the coming season, if his recovery process goes smoothly.  The additional year on the minors contract gives both Altavilla and the Sox some extra security in giving him all the time he needs to get back into form.

They have done this before. Pretty sure they did this with Andrew Miller when 1st got him off the scrap heap from the Marlins. Given out more than AAA standard money to some.. Like Sandy Leon 1 year to sign a AAA deal. Am sure many teams do these kinds of deals, especially with guys like Altavilla, who have upside like he does.

It says on baseball reference, he’s arb eligible till 2024. It just seems weird for an athlete not to bet on himself. Idk, maybe there’s different rules regarding that and how it can benefit both parties.

Someone explain to ownership. We the fans expect the money we pump in to be used to aquire talent to contend with. Also 90% don’t care about prospects we realize they more often then not they don’t pan out….. GO get some players

Apparently someone needs to explain to you that the team ownership and Front Office don’t take directions from the fans. First off there’s no way you could possibly get any sort of consensus opinion from the fan base. Secondly, they’re the ones who know what the hell they’re doing, not the fans. As Bloom said this morning, they have a plan on how they want to build the roster and they’re going to stick with their plan regardless of what any other team does.

Kinda hard on the guy huh? The last thing we should do is trust the MLB ownership or the players. They DO know what they’re doing and it affects who gets to go to the game and those who want to buy team gear, but are unable to afford to because it’s all so ridiculously priced. So, for as far as Ibuititnoonecame’s statement is concerned, with a little insight, one can see what’s happening right in front of our collective eyes- brainwashing and swallowing the red or blue pill. Baseball is overpriced; full of itself; egomaniacal; and littered with entitlement. Try telling your CEO that you want a larger piece of the pie just because of your self-projected potential, and then threaten a strike when your CEO refuses to let you in on something they created. You can bet you’ll be looking at the want ads. I’m a lifelong fan of the game and I’m pissed at the MLB and players for being so unappreciative. The money comes from you and me and from kids who cut lawns and throw newspapers just to buy a jersey with their hero’s name on the back. Lastly, there are extremely talented players who don’t love the game and could care less for its fanbase. That’s what we have built with our complacency. Someone DID explain how baseball works, and that’s the reason for Ibuititnoonecame’s post. He/she is sick of the gouging as are many of us. Take your bullying roadshow on the road and use your supposedly rarified intellect to make a real change like an affordable hot dog, or parking that doesn’t cost $20 or even with a ticket purchase. Baseball is becoming increasingly unpopular because of 162 game season with NFL-level ticket prices and legalized scalping. They’re just talented athletes with high expectations, not surgeons, not truck drivers or anything else that has a harsh reality. Damn! Get real.

Kingken67 – You just proved you have no idea what you are talking about because Bloom is clueless. End of story.

He trashed the Red Sox with his deals. He spends more on his active roster than DD did and what do the Red Sox have from all that spending. Enormous mediocrity.

Simple fan question. Is paying prices that are extremely high to see guys Arroyo and Wacha make sense to you? Rather than Mookie and Benny? If so, jump off the site you don’t belong here.. Go back to twitter.

Maybe you can get some swamp land in Florida. Incredibly gullible fan. WOW. Bloom talks double talk about a mysterious future that is never going to happen! Third year of near CAP spending and no division titles and no rings. If he was doing a Tampa Bay thing and spending $100MM and looking so bad people wouldn’t care but he’s spending double that and the team still lacks talent since they lost Mookie. Not one all-star by Bloom. The only good minor league additions came from failure. Throw him out with the trash because he destroyed a team in it’s prime.

3 great years with DD and Cora screws up Spring Training in 2019 and the Owners flush the toilet and the great players start swirling away. Thank goodness he’s picked up studs like Wacha, Paxton who can’t play, Hill, resigned a failing Barnes, paid $12MM for JBJ rather than $3MM for Renfroe for two years so not just $9MM wasted but $18MM wasted!! The guys brilliant. How about 2021. More brilliance. He overpaid for a floundering E-ROD $8.3MM, wasted $10MM on Richards, over paid Kiki because Cora was his baby sitter when he was a child, made the brilliant Cordero deal, and the Marwin Gonzalez deal, Andriese, Perez and the list goes on and on..

Yeah, he’s got a great plan. The word is Chaos. He blew up the organization and it’s not clear if that was his charter by ownership or his ineptitude. No sustained winning in the future while Bloom is GM, just sustained losing.

The sooner Bloom is booted the sooner fans can try and get behind a GM who ACTUALLY has a plan instead of suggesting a plan until people call him on it.

If Bloom is so great a GM why hasn’t he been transparent with his plan? How incredibly vague is sustained winning? It’s like a kid in school being asked how his homework is coming along and he answer “Oh it’s going to be great!!” Well, the great hasn’t happened and it’s nearing the end of year 3 and most fans said it’s only fair to give him 3 years even though his first action was the worst in 100 years and then he followed up the disaster by redistributing the payroll to mediocre players with a plan of ridding the team of their star players. Is that his plan? As you see it? Because that’s what’s happening but it sure doesn’t seem planned. It seems like complete ineptitude.

Your right with the complete state of chaos you should be attacking fans who aren’t happy with Bloom’s new mediocrity. You owe the guy who made the original comment for ranting incredibly naive crap to him. Not a word you said is based in fact. It’s all nebulous comments by a GM who is drowning from a lack of experience in big market baseball.

Last point, look around in the division. Toronto actually built a great team in the time Bloom dismantled the Red Sox. TB gets by with smoke and mirrors but it does prove the brains of the organization were left in Tampa! Even Cashman who wastes more money on injury prone stars than anyone in history still has done more since Bloom showed up. Why? Because he added Rizzo. That’s ONE MORE ALL-STAR than Bloom has added.

What’s laughable is you don’t even see Baltimore passing us bye. They rebuilt and now have nearly equal talent with Boston and two years ago they were light years behind us. Our train is standing still and all the others are blowing bye us as we prepare for the fulfillment of the promise of sustained winning. If only that promise didn’t sit on the horizon instead of in front of us as was suggested by Bloom nearly 3 years ago. The man should be fired today!!! Or give him a couple of days so he can watch Toronto trade for Jose Ramirez, the perfect solution for what’s wrong in Boston.

Sounds like smart depth move for 2023 more so than 2022.

I just wonder if he’s going to be needed to be protected come December in Rule V Draft. Slots will be scarce next winter, and he seems like a no-brainer for a team to grab if he’s pitching well later this year.

I mean damn dude, you lost your #3 starter and your starting right fielder and you replaced them with 2 busted starting pitchers, JBJ and this year’s model of Garrett Richards?? Really looking forward to baseball this summer. Can we have the lockout back please??

John Henry hired him to turn us into the Tampa Bay Rays! And By Golly we are becoming the Tampa Bay Rays! How exciting. Bogaerts will be out the door after this season, and Devers will be so unhappy they will need to trade him. Within 2 years the fan base won’t be able to tell you who’s on the team anymore.

Suzuki? Nope, What about re-signing Schwarber? Not a chance! So, Dan Altavilla is what Bloom has in mind as being the missing piece for this team? Ownership has made it clear they do NOT care about winning, they ONLY care about staying in playoff contention long enough to put enough asses in seats!

Give me big names or give me nothing! Too bad, followers of the Expensive Way. You’re not getting Freeman, Story, or Correa. Don’t be fooled by Altavilla signing–all levels must be cultivated at the same time. If you think the FO is sitting on its hands right now and not canvassing all of MLB for trade targets, then you mistake your own mental sloth for theirs.

We are not getting anyone that we have to pay a lot of money to. He picked up JBJ again as to why I have no idea and he gave up a power hitter. He picked up a 42 year old pitcher Rich Hill, a guy who has a 5 something ERA and an injured Paxton. He is not picking up any one big. He reminds me of Dan Duquette, in one everything and bring a day late and a dollar short except with Manny Ramirez.

AL – DID YOU KNOW THAT BLOOM’S 2022 payroll on active players is HIGHER than DD’s during the ENTIRE 2018 season?

Bloom continues to knock up against the cap but his strategy is double the players averaging half the cost. If he doesn’t resign Nate or JD and Sale and Bogey opt out the 6 players making $17MM or more on the 2018 team will all be gone and we’ll have 12 really bad players to replace them all costing $12MM or less!! How scary is that? But don’t worry all this will change when Mayer and Yorke make it through AAA and jump to the MLB and become instant all-stars. Wait, to be fair, that probably won’t happen for at least 3 to 5 years. Wasn’t that Bloom’s original horizon? Three years later we have made no progress on the inevitable sustained winning!!! hahaha

How did he give Wacha the money he gave him for mediocrity and how do you trade for JBJ who cannot hit and that albatross of a contract. Paxton is of no help right now. Mark my words that Baeggarts will leave at the end of the year too. Bloom’s purpose was to get under the luxury tax.
If he had picked up a good reliever last year we would be dusting off the World Series trophy now. Don’t get your hopes high on Correa either, not going to happen. This team overachieved last year and lightning ⚡️ does not strike twice.
