Orioles Option DJ Stewart To Triple-A

By TC Zencka | April 10, 2022 at 5:03pm CDT

The Orioles have optioned DJ Stewart to Triple-A Norfolk, per the Orioles.

Counting the two plate appearances Stewart made before today’s game, Stewart has not appeared in five consecutive seasons for the Orioles. He saw the most action of his career last season, stepping to the plate 318 times with a triple-slash line of .204/.324/.374 with 12 long balls.

More roster moves appear to be on the way for Baltimore. Dean Kremer warmed up in the bullpen, but sat down again after apparently suffering an injury, per Roch Kubatko of MASNsports. He appeared to have injured his left oblique. Stewart’s demotion could be meant to create roster space to add another arm while they await an update on Kremer, though that’s speculative.

The Orioles have a day or so to figure out their next move. With a day off on Monday, the Orioles will likely wait until early Tuesday to make an addition to the roster.

Why is this note able? I don’t follow Orioles so unfamiliar with their players. Was he expected to be a big part of the season ?

Why because everything the Orioles do is notable
He was also a 1st round draft choice for the Orioles awhile ago and he always had some potential as a power hitter and a good eye

He also has had freak injuries and his time in Baltimore might be up
      Who knows

Don’t the Orioles play the Brewers Monday late afternoon?

Yes they do— the Article was wrong on that. Their Home Opener is Monday Afternoon.

The Orioles do not have a day off on Monday, they play the Brewers. It is the Orioles opening day for crying out loud, TC.

Yeah, that’s just bad. Sorry. I’m not one to call people out, but you got a job writing for MLBTR. I took one journalism class 18 years ago. I shouldn’t be able to do your job better than you.

Hopefully Elias and company are starting to call up some of the prospects. Diaz is tearing the cover off the ball in Norfolk, following up a great spring. G-Rod looked awesome in his AAA debut. After that Rays series hopefully they decided they didn’t want a whole season of watching this movie again

Good. I’d prefer if MLB stated rooting out the 3-outcome guys from the game as it is destroying the product on the field. They also complain too much about how they are being impacted in a negative manner by the shift. That tells me that they don’t know how to make adjustments and should not be in the majors.

Hasn’t appeared in 5 consecutive seasons, but got a lot of work last season hmm?

I always liked DJ Stewart, but I have no idea how he was a 1st round pick. He was a running back in high school and projected to be a corner OF’er at best with a power potential bat. He had some speed but was more quick than fast. A raw athlete. He seemed to be putting things together when he finally got a call up. He hit for some power, stole some bases, and had a high OBP in the minors, which is a HUGE rarity for an Orioles player or prospect.

Unfortunately for him he got hit with the crazy injury bug and was buried on the depth chart when he was able to play. He just never got a chance to really get it going. His career with the Orioles is probably at an end. Might be a career AAAA player now.

Whil I can appreciate your thoughts about DJ Stewart, I don’t agree that he never received an opportunity with the Orioles. Considering the Orioles teams and their record for the past seasons he has had plenty of chances to prove himself. The issue with DJ is that the number of possible outfielders in the organization now and their collective potential outweighs any attributes that having DJ Stewart on you roster provides. Maybe a change of scenery will suit him better for his MLB future.

DJ has had opportunities to perform for this team. He was drafted by the Duquette regime so he likely is running low on future opportunities.

For whatever reasons, he may have run out of time with this team. He is a likable
fellow but he needs to hit. This first series w the Rays has been a disaster for the Orioles. They may move to really shake things up.

He won’t have any future opportunities here in Baltimore unless somebody else gets hurt.

What is there to `like` about DJ? Nothing really

I never said he didn’t get his opportunities. I said that he never got a chance to get it going due to injuries and being buried on the depth chart, which you also mention. The Orioles had a slew of “corner OF/INF” guys which in any other teams’ lingo would be a DH, but we also had about five of those at the time.

He got his opportunities, he wasn’t able to seize it. He had a bit more of a chance before Mullins finally had a good season, before Hayes got here, and while Santander was hurt. Mancini was also playing a bit of OF during his tenure.

He’ll be buried here. I agree, some other team weak in OF depth could take a flier, but I think he’s a shuttle player, 5th OFer, AAAA player the rest of his career.

DJ Stewart is a streaky hitter who can flat out hit for a game or two then the next few games could strikeout several times and go hit less. He lacks consistency at the plate. And he isn’t the fleetest of outfielders. But he could catch on to a team maybe in the NL that could use a DH/ Pinch hitter.

Stewart is unathletic. is clumsy resulted in him injuring himself. Even on draft day, he was just a Dh

He played in close to if not 100 games last year and played in half the games of the COVID shortened year. He has had opportunities. Yes he also has had some injuries as well. What I never understood, The Stankees drafted him in 2012 I think in the last round and 3 yrs later the Orioles drafted him in the 1st round. What did they see in those 3 yrs to make his stock rise?? I hate to admit it but I think the Stankees got that one right. There are too many outfielders popping up through that his window of opportunity is probably gone here. Which means its probably gone everywhere.

he was in high school! Lots and lots and just about every pick gets drafted higher after Junior year of College than out of high school
