Cubs Place Nico Hoerner On Injured List, Activate Andrelton Simmons

By Darragh McDonald | May 15, 2022 at 2:40pm CDT

The Cubs announced to reporters, including Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, that shortstop Nico Hoerner has been placed on the injured list with a right ankle sprain retroactive to May 12. Swapping places with Hoerner is shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who will come off the injured list.

It’s surely a frustrating series of events for Hoerner and Cubs’ fans. Any injury is frustrating, of course, but this one was suffered when Hoerner collided with umpire Dan Iassogna during a recent game. Through 29 games on the season, he’s hitting .271/.293/.396, wRC+ of 94. It’s a rarity for his plate appearances to conclude with the ball in the catcher’s mitt behind him, as Hoerner has an incredibly low walk rate of 2%, as well as a very low 14.1% strikeout rate. No timeline has been given for his recovery process.

As for Simmons, he was signed by the Cubs to a one-year contract that will pay him $4MM plus incentives. However, shoulder soreness has kept him on the IL for the entire season until now, meaning he’s yet to play in a game as a Cub. He has always provided elite defense but has rarely provided much with the bat. Last year with the Twins, his batting line was .223/.283/.274. Although that adds up to a meager 56 wRC+, FanGraphs still believed him to be worth o.8 wins above replacement on account of his glovework.

You have a strange definition of “special.” He’s exactly average in every way. Which is totally fine, don’t get me wrong, but that’s kind of the opposite of “special.”

You’re completely wrong. Hoerner is excellent on defense and his bat is something to watch. He rarely makes weak contact. It’s so stupid that people can’t see passed their obvious bias.

        Hoerner looks better than Madrigal.

But you want “special”, that would be Christian Hernandez the Cubs shortstop in say around three more years.

Christian Hernandez will be better than Brennan Davis, better than Seiya Suzuki, well, you get the idea, he will be “special”.

But I am a Nico Hoerner fan, too.

Between weird ads like EveOaklee, and gross fungus riddled toe nail ads, I wonder if I’m on the right site!

@curly. I avoid healthcare as much as possible but if my toenails looked like that I’d be getting them all surgically removed.

Amen dadofdonnydownvote, lately I’ve been getting pics of fine looking young ladies which I prefer over fungus ladden toe nails! Looks like the site removed the ad by EveOaklee, I’ve been seeing that on a lot of threads & wonder how they get those ads on this site?

The Cubs now have their starting double play combo on the IL with Nico Hoerner joining Nick Madrigal. The team’s high whiff rates will also escalate.

Nico will likely be moving over to 2B once he returns. Madrigal appears incapable of remaining in Chicago.

Nah. Too soon for any of that. Hoerner is playing excellent SS, solid BA and low K rate. Madrigal has had a rough six weeks- but hardly enough time to say he’s out of Chicago. The Cubs have plenty of holes, but SS and 2nd aren’t 2 of them.

Because the rebuilding/retooling/reloading Cubs absolutely need to play Andrelton Simmons at SS so Nico Hoerner can replace Nick Madrigal at 2B. LMAO!

Aaron I see your boys tried playing with the big boys this weekend. Johnny Cueto to the rescue.

Shouldn’t an umpire who causes an injury to a player be suspended for 30 days; these guys need to stay out of the way of the play.

“causes an injury” implies some intent. I’m sure the ump didn’t want, or try, to hurt Hoerner.
